he Silver Anniversary Lexicon ht of ygarsf eiy . 1:0 the w . All mustt ligenot difficult for Umecaidefw Conflues Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. Thoreau Tim - e lS tlze greatest of i 0UCltor.5- Bacon The LEXICON became the official publication of Lexington High School in 1939. It was taken from the Spotlight, a small yearbook which had been published previously, and put into perma- nent and lasting form. The name LEXICON was chosen in a school contest to name the annual. The first volume, which contained all of sixty-six pages, was dedicated to the Seniors-to-be of Lexington High School. The junior and senior classes of 1939 were privileged to have individual pictures While the other classes were portrayed in stilted group pictures. The book was small and pictures of the organizations were few and far between, but the first frugal attempt was Well re- warded as the LEXICON became the annual publication of Lexington High School. Through the years the annual has depicted many outstanding events and changes in Lexing- ton High School. In 1940 the football team proved itself by becoming the State Champions. In 1943 the LEXICON told the story of the school at war by dedicating that particular edition to those former Lexington High School students who were somewhere on the battlefields, fighting and dying to preserve our liberty and to keep Old Glory waving. In 1948, Mr. C. E. Wike came to us and in 1955, one of Lexington Senior High School's own teachers, Miss Betty Jo Ring, was crowned Miss North Carolina. In 1954 both students and faculty moved to the new and modern Lexington Senior High School building on Penry Street. By 1960, the school was large enough to advance to 4-A competition in athletics. We must give credit to Bobbie Green, the editor, and Margaret Ward, the business manager of the 1939 edition. It was only through their tireless efforts that the LEXICON grew and survived the first troubled years of existence. No one knew whether the edition would ultimately material- ize. They had to experiment, and their results are highly commendable. The book came out on time and the students were greatly pleased with this early success. The years went by, and gradually the LExxcoN became, with new methods, suggestions, and improvements, one of the Iinest high school annuals in North Carolina. The year 1963 comes, and we celebrate the publishing of that first LEXICON. At times success seemed remote, but with each succeeding publication date the reputation of the book increased. Today, we proudly present the LEXICON in its twenty-fifth year of publication.
