TAYLOR Secretary Substitute Z . A We, the students of Lexington Senior High, are deeply indebted to the mem- bers of the faculty in many ways for many things. Were it not-for the help of our teachers, many of the things at school which we take for granted would not be possible. Each of us enjoys our clubs, school paper, and annual, class parties, and so many other extras which would not be possible but for the help and guidance of our teachers. Few of us appreciate fully the many lhoursi of un- rewarded service given by these people. For their help to the entire student body, we are deeply grateful, but we appreciate even more the many ways our teachers have helped each of us individually. The kind words spoken each day, the patience displayed, the friendship offered, and the willingness to keep teaching- even when it seemed we would never learn-will linger in our memories long after graduation. With these memories will remain the feelings of mutual respect and friendship between the faculty and students of our school. . Jw Vit ,J 1 0. pd. It's impossible to please everyone concerning everything, but We tried to put together a LEXICON of which you can be proud. We want to say thank you to the literary staif-Ginger, Carol, Betty, Johnny, Tony, Suzanne, Jackie, Bethy, Kay, Linda, and Joe- and to the business staif-Charlye, Diane, Keith, David, Dawn, Tricia, Jimmy, Michael Dobbin. To Johnny Myers, who took many of our pictures, we want to say an especially big thank you. While we're saying thank you there are two people whom we cannot omit. To .our advisors, Miss Charlotte Matthews and Miss Janie Manning, go our most sincere appreciation. Had it not been for their hard work, guidance, and tremendous patience, we could not have prepared this annual. We can't, of course, ever tell you of all the experiences behind this annual, but let it suffice to say that the hours of .work and some anxiety are overshadowed by the enjoyment we received. So we give to you your LEXICON and hope that it will bring your much joy and many appy memories. MARIE and DICK 14 y e f. 1. , , .1 i ,:. W w K I V i i W M I, 1 59 - , , w N 1961-1962 was a year of 'crisis and change for the world. The Berlin situation set the whole world on pins and needles, and the possi- bility of military conflict recalled many memories of World War II activities. The cost of living rose' slightlyg the World population was increased by forty-eight million babies, including another heir to the British throne, and as life pro- ceeded on earth, man continued his probes of outer space. But at Lexington Senior High School activities continued much A asithey had in previous years. Life was iilled with ball games, clubs, dances at the Y, class activities, the Junior-Senior, exams, and of . course a certain amount of study- mg. In this your LEXICON we hope to present toyou a pictorial story of 1961-1962 at Lexington Senior High. With the coming of over four hundred freshmen, classes were filled, and the enrollment exceeded one thousand students. As the days passed, students and teachers settled down to schoolwork, and school once again became a routine. Of course, days were brighter when football games began. Days were filled with pep rallies, practices for players, and for Juniors, working at Football games. School organizations such as The Student Council were very active with events such as College Day, Lexington had its first Youth Day. The day was filled with assemblies, discussion groups, and meetings at the Y. To students and parents this proved to be a very profitable experi- ence. Pinnings were held for various organizations as was the traditional Honor Society Tapping. The final touch for fall was Homecoming. EXCHANGE PROGRAM We are proud that Lexington is an active member of the American Field Service. Each year a student from a foreign country stays with the family of a Senior High School student. This year Lexington is fortunate in having two exchange students-Ann Soren- sen from Denmark, and Tony Ratia from Finland. Each summer L. S. H. S. sends one of its students abroad. Last summer Pat Hankins spent her summer in Carlsburg, Germany. 19 :Y X uf .Lia-.-.uez.. . ,, is YW- Y' Q. Vu H f 5 . , ' -J., 4. ' -f , , f, . N ' . I .I I I. l.2 1 .Im ,, I, . , .III Winter came to Lexington Senior High School, and with it came many additional activities. Clubs became very activex with various projects for members most elaborate of which was the annual Tri-Hi-Y Coronation. At Christmas time many clubs carried out service projects which were fun for members and helpful to needy - people. With winter also came the fervent wishes that it would snow Iten feet deep, that Christmas vacation would last forever, that College Board did not exist, an that exams were never given. For the boys there were winter sports. Many people enjoyed attending the basketball games where both spirit and tension were high as the Yellow Jackets met formidable opponents. Wrest- ling also gained the attention of many students. Among the classes plans were beginning to . take shape. For the Juniors it was the tremendous task of -planning a Junior-Senior, and for Seniors much time had to be spent on the' Senior trip and the Senior Class Play. The dull, dreary days of winter passed, and one sunny day a faint warm breeze -.- was felt. For students it was a sure sign . that winter was fleeing fast. I I i r .v-' d . - .. Among other activities for which the Tri-Hi-Y is noted are the decorating of the Queen's iloat, monthly supper meetings, and attending church services together once a month. As nature gained new life, students became more active, for they knew that when spring came summer could not be far behind. Outdoor sports once again became popular. Baseball practice began in the early spring, and games were soon being played in the afternoon following school. Track meets also had their place in the sports, for Lexington athletes as they had in past years. Anticipation rose as members of the Lexhipep staff waited for the Senior Edition which was to be the last in a year's series of papers. Of course, excitement reached a feverish pitch as members - of the Lexicon stay' waited to see how the Lexicon on which they had worked so long would look. When the annuals arrived, they were presented at the traditional Lexicon assembly. ' Underclassmen looked forward- to class partiesg and for Juniors, the great hour finally arrived when class rings were received. The people who were happiest because spring had arrived were Seniors. They looked forward to the Junior-Senior, 'Senior Assembly, and the highest hour, Graduation. Graduation did come, and with it came gifts, memories, and for some a few tears. . Exam days were passed, and summer had arrived. School was outg vacation begang and another year at L.S.H.S. came to a close.
