EFF lli ,Dedication With great pleasure the 1959 LEXICON staff dedicates this twenty- first edition to one who has justly earned the respect of everyone at Lexington Senior High School. For the ideals you represent, for your contributions to athletics, and for your unselfish interest in the student life at our school, we proudly honor you .... COACH V. G. A Each year the L1-:x1coN staff, on behalf of the student body, welcomes this oppor- tunity to acknowledge the unceasing work of two well-known men in our school system. Mr. L. E. Andrews has administered his duties as superintendent of the city efficiently for twenty-two years. His job includes nearly every phase of activity in each of Lexing- ton's schools. The ability to make wise decisions is one of his attributes which has accounted for the smooth operation of these schools. However, in spite of the number of his responsibilities, he is never too busy to be friendly to any student. This year was Mr. Andrews' first in his office in the new administration building. This brings him closer to Lexington Senior High School, and we are always glad to have him visit this side of the campus. As principal for twelve years Mr. C. E. Wike has earned the love and respect of all former and present students of Lexington Senior High School. Through his efforts each new school year is more successful than the last. His thoughtful study of the needs of our school and its students has brought about constant improvements in every part of the high school program. The school is run democratically with the students participating to a great degree. His concern for and willingness to talk with the individual student has endeared him to us all. Also, we would like to thank the members of the faculty of Lexington Senior High for their dedication to the development of each student into a happy and useful member of society. 7 gui 3' L. x I Y,TA 1, Mrs. Dugan Aycock English Mrs. L. NCI N Z oolba . .JMJQM 106 As the 1958 football season opened for Lexington High School, many new faces composed the starting lineup. The loss from the 1957 championship team was tre- mendous. The chief worry of the coaches was the lack of size and experience in the line. The entire starting line from '57 graduated, but in the backfield it was a different story. Coach Bowen's boys were loaded with talent. The 1958 starting backfield was probably the finest in the state. As the season progressed so did the Jackets. The line gained experience and the backfield lived up to all expectations. As the season closed, we had a 7-3 record, with losses to highly rated Salis- bury, Albemarle, and conference champions, Asheboro. With a few more breaks, all three of the losses could have been victories. The spirit and determination of the 1958 football squad was wonder- ful. They never let up, but fought all the way. Nineteen hundred and fifty eight was the last year Lexington High School's athletic teams will par- ticipate in AA competition. In 1959 the Jackets will be in the new AAAA conference. The loss from the 1958 track team was great with jumper Bill Lopp and 880 runner Charles Hamilton both graduated. However, the 1958 season gave experience to many new faces. David Lopp, a superb dash man, should be in good shape. Junior Webster, a sophomore dash man, will return. Robin Deese, the miler, returns also. Raymond Smith, Jimmy Thompson, and a host of others will be valuable point-gainers. The success of a track team depends chiefly upon the desire of each boy to win. Perfect con- dition is required of each boy if he expects to be a winner. To achieve this condition, hard work and practice are required by the boys and the coach. Coach Bowen does a wonderful job train- ing these boys and deserves much credit for his diligence. We are very sure the 1959 edition of the track team will bring many medals to Lexington Senior High School. 120 Seated are Bill Zackary and Ricky Hooker. Donnie Hedrick, a sophomore who won the North Carolina Junior Crown last sum- mer, should be the number one man, senior Eddie Gray, a three year letterman who hits the ball well, is returning also, sophomore lettermen Bill Zackary and Ricky Hooker, and three year letter- man Craig Redwine should give the team support. To fill the other vacancy, there are several freshman potentials. Guy Smith, a little boy who can really hit the ball Well, should give the re- turning lettermen plenty of competition. Victor Frietag could also land a spot on the team. The experienbe of the '59 squad should prove beneficial in their hopes of winning the champion- ship for the second year in a row. 121 fi S' L B'11 Hilton, Ben Johnson, Bob Griifith, Ken Lambeth, and Pictured, left to right, are Captain Fred opp, 1 Eddie Lanier. The losses of such stars as Sara Nan Beck and Theresa Rimer may be felt considerably. Jerry Ann Beck, Kathy Phillips, Ginger White, and Margaret Berry will be returning to net more victories and possibly a championship. As we write these final words, we want to thank everyone who gave unceasingly of their time and efforts to complete the 1959 LExIcoN. First we would like to thank Miss Charlotte Matthews, advisor of the Literary Staff, and Miss Janie Manning, advisor of the Business Staff, for their patient guidance and valuable suggestions. We are grateful to Mr. Wike, Mrs. Padgett, and all the members of the faculty for their consideration and willing co-operation. We wish to express our appreciation also to each individual on both the Literary and Business staffs. Without the long hours of hard work spent by these students, this twenty-first edition of the LEXICON would not have been possible. The Senior Class Editor, Becky Lou Everhart, along with James Young, Class Editor, and his assistants, Kitty Bernhardt and Sister Burke, are responsible for a wonderful class section. Becky Shillinglaw, Club Editor, and her assistant, Rhonda Morgan, successfully accomplished the difficult task of producing their section. Sports Editor, Craig Redwine, and Joe Gann, his assistant, did an excellent job on a section which requires much time and patience. Sherry Clodfelter, as Feature Editor, did a fine job of presenting two of the most festive events of our school. Mildred Davis was our capable typist. The ability of our photographer, Tommy Dickerson, was a great asset to the staff. The Business Staff this year spent a great amount of time and energy in soliciting advertisements. We would like to thank Fred Lopp, Martha Greer, Kenneth Lambeth, Gloria Dunn, Martha Yount, and Gerald Briggs for their efforts towards making this a most successful year. Mary Hunt is due much credit for her efficient work as bookkeeper. To Mr. Joe Phelps and Edwards 8: Broughton Company of Raleigh, we express our gratitude for their interest and valuable help in publishing this annual. School Pictures, Incorporated, is responsible for the excellent pictures in the class section, and Jakie Koonts of The Dispatch and Mr. Bill Choate provided many of the group pictures used. Finally, our most hearty thanks goes out to each student who so will- ingly assisted in the production of this book. It is only with the interest and support of the students that a staff can produce a successful annual. Sincerely, BARBARA AND Do'r'rn: Editor and Business Manager ,,,.Wv,.-ww M.
