The paper includes school news, editorials, literary and sports articles, a gossip column, and jokes. Each year the staff publishes nine editions, including the extra-large Christmas and Senior editions. These editions are made possible through the subscriptions of the students and the advertisements of the merchants. Mrs. Hedrickls room is a busy place each day. Each mem- ber of the staff takes his part and attempts to meet that early deadline. After the finisned products are finally distributed to the students, the staff can say that it was well worth the late hours and hard work that they spent to have one of the very best school papers as the result. fn md gun. The Lexington Senior High Glee Club has really made our school proud. This year the Clee Club con- sists of sixty-one voices, which are selected from talented students from all four grades. The Glee Club is really two separate Clee Clubs: the Mixed Chorus and the Girls' Chorus. Both are guided under the capable leadership of Mrs. E. E. Witherspoon. Throughout the year, the Clee Club gives several assembly programs, among which is the most inspiring Thanksgiving Assembly. They also participate in the traditional candlelight service at Christmas. Each spring during the city-wide music festival, the Clee Club is on hand to lead the other Clee Clubs in music selections. The baccalaureate service and the commencement service would not be complete without the music of the Clee Club. After much hard work, Mrs. Witherspoon, each year, enters the Clee Club in the district contest at High Point and the state-wide music festival at Greensboro. Glee Club 4 A 'nf 'if' Mus. E. E. XVITHI-IRSPOON at Director Radio programs and occasional appearances be- fore civic clubs are only a few things that the Clee Club has to cram into their busy schedule. Training and experience gained in the Glee Club has been very beneficial to each member. Some of the members participate in the Community Choral Society. The club is made up of students taking the Diversified Occupations course. This course offers the student who wants to work and still attend high school a wide selection of jobs from which to choose. These students are taking ad- vantage of this opportunity to prepare them- selves for the future during their high school years because most of them do not plan to attend college. The D. 0. Priceg Head Coach, Pre-snell Mullg Backfield Coach, Carroll Boweng Assistant Junior Varsity Coach. Jack Williamsg and Junior Varsity Coach, Bob Bowers. Separating the men from the boys-that's quite a job considering both the quantity and quality of boys who turn out for football each year. This year Coach Mullis job was even more difiicult because of the large number of veteran linemen and the group of inexperienced backfieldmen who turned out for practices. Under the leadership of the two co-captains. Bill Lopp and Craven Young. the Yellow Jackets showed their undefeatable spirit time and again during the 1957 season. The Jacket line, boasting some of the most capable personel in the state, rendered many of its opponents helpless. Having only one starter back, the backfield at the beginning of the season was weak. but through hard work the young backs made steady progress. When the final quarter was over. the Yellow Jackets had a 6-1 conference record and a 8-4 over-all mark. The LEXICON Sports Staff wishes to congratulate Coach Mull, Coach Price, and Coach Bowen for a iob well done, and predicts that the 1958 Yellow Jacket squad will go undefeated. Joe Owens pulled the Jackets through for live victories of the seven on the mound, against two losses. Bobby Fine also did some service on the mound. With eight lettermen returning, the 1958 team should be loaded with talent. Owens and McCinn will share duty on the mound with Mike Higgins behind the plate. South- paw Fred Bell: will probably hold down first with Craven Young on second. Joe Yarbrough at shortstop and Harry Thoma- son on third complete the Jackets' infield. Gene Sink, a superb outfielder, completes the list of returning lettermen, but Bob Leonard may contribute his talents to the infield. Parks Easter, Coach The 1957 netmen really proved to be the cinderella team of the conference, losing only to Elkin, which always has a fine team. The tennis team made quite a record. Captain Fred Lopp was backed by Conference Singleis Champion Sam Hayes, the only member of the team who graduated. Steve Murdock, a juniorg Bobby Griffith, a sophomore, and freshmen Bill Hilton, David Lopp, and Kenneth Lambeth will return for the 1958 season. The netmen are looking with enthusiasm toward the 1958 season. The team lost only one letterman from last year's squad. Moyer Smith, Johnny Walser, Bill Daughety, Jimmy Burke, Roby Deese, and Leonard Prevette graduated. These boys will be missed, but there are still a lot of good, earnest boys in school. Charles Hamilton, an excellent 880 runner, will be back. Bill Lopp, a high jumper, will also return. Robin Deese, fol- lowing in his brotherls footsteps, will run the mile. These cindermen are looking with keen enthusiasm toward the spring and are hoping to win the champion- ship, but this can only be done by hard work. Every member of the track team must be in perfect physical condition, or he may lose that one-tenth of a second that can mean the difference between first and second place.
