Dear Students: When you receive your copy of the LEXICON, it always means that the school year is almost over. Iram sure that the LEXICON staff has again pro- vided -you with an attractive record of your many interesting activities and achievements of the school year. I hope that this year has been a profitable and enjoyable one for all of you. Within the next few weeks about a hundred and fifty of you who are seniors will be gradu- ating. We are going to miss you a great deal, although we are proud of the progress that you have made and congratulate you upon your many honors and achievements while you'have been in high school. After you have graduated, you are still an important part of your high school- both in what you have contributed to the school while you have been here, and in the way you will represent it in the years to come. The underclassmen are already thinking about and making plans for next year. Your most im- portant job now is that of completing your edu- cation. In order to get the most out of life, you must develop your talents and abilities to the fullest extent of which you are capable. You will find that the harder you work in school- in the classroom, in athletics, music, and other worth-while activities-the more enjoyable it will be. I hope that all of you will have a good sum- mer vacation and another successful year in school next year. Sincerely yours, C. E. WIKE, Principal. Dear Students: I am delighted to have the opportunity of writing a message to you through the medium of your high school annual. The first thing I want to say is-I am proud of the LEXICON. This publication has a glorious history. It began in 1939, and it is my privilege to have copies of each year's edition since that time. I prize this collection very highly. There is pne point which I desire to especially emphasize in this letter to you. It is a matter which confronts the Seniors particularly at this time, but all of you will face it within the next three years. Here it is-If at all possible cou- tinue your education after high school. Not enough of the fine boys and girls who graduate from our high schools are continuing their edu- cation beyond high school Let me give you some facts: A survey of the 1955 high school graduates in North Carolina shows that 26 per cent entered senior collegesg 4.91 per cent enrolled in junior collegesg 6.15 per cent went to business and trade schools, and nurses training. In other words, approximately 37 per cent continued their formal education. Adding to this 37 per cent the 6.5 per cent who entered military service we get a total of 43.44 per cent. There is left, therefore, 56.56 per cent who evidently ended their formal education with graduation from high school. All professions are experiencing a great shortage of qualified personnel and less than one-half of the high school graduates are preparing them- selves for these jobs. This is a bad situation. I am convinced that one thing and only one thing will decide this question for you-Determination. Best wishes always, Sincerely yours, L. E. ANDREWS, Superintendent. n,,,,. l
