In sultry heat coaches Harold and Carroll Bowen and V. G. Price, Jr., issued equipment to the largest number of boys ever to report for football practice in the history of Lexington High School. Equipment had to be especially ordered for the new pros- pects. With a willing and hard working look in each boyis eyes, these prospects scrimmaged, never letting a ninety-five degree thermometer and three practices a day daunt them. Introduction of the T formation to the Jackets meant vigorous work. Harder than many of the years of training in L.H.S. football. With the spirit, love of the sport, and patient coaching, a team began to take its shape. From green', but ffnever-say-die', material, the coaches picked eleven boys as the first squad ever to play in Phillpott stadium. Game time loomed nearer'-the first team had to have reserve strength. Thirty-three trying boys were the coaches' answer. These boys made the seasonis Hrst out-of-town trip-the first victory, which made it some easier to taste defeat the following week end at the opening of Phillpott stadium. Diligent, hard-working boys as these made enthusiastic gridiron history for 1953. Pictured above, the football coaches work out plays for 553 season. Lzffl lo righl: Line-Coach V. G. Being of sound body, excellent health, and questionable mind, we declare this to be our last will and testament to be executed in the following order: ARTICLE I. To The Faculty ITEM I. To Mr. Wike, our favorite principal, we leave a pair of roller skates so that he can whiz from room to room and be heard a mile away. ITEM II. To Mrs. Hedrick we leave a new class of seniors who aren't rowdy at class meetings. True, we should have set a better example for underclassmen, but we were just very full of life and very proud of being seniors. We hope you will overlook the fun we had fsometimes at your expensel, and think of us with fond memories as time goes by. ITEM III. To Miss jean Brooks Webster we leave a smile to be worn on all occassions and note to her studentsAshe isn't half as fierce as she pretends to be. ITEM IV. To Mr. Clark we leave more students who sign up for the L'crip,' sociology course they've heard about, but find at the end of the year that they have matured more in that class than probably any other. ITEM V. To Miss Gilliam we leave wide awake French students who don't cringe when she comes to their name on her little white cards. ITEM VI. To Miss Ring we leave a LEx1coN staff that will turn out as good an annual in the future as it has in the past. ITEM VII. To Mrs. Lewis we leave a junior genius who can think of some miraculous money-making deal to finance the junior-Senior now that selling has been black-balled. ITEM VIII. To the faculty in general we leave more appreciative students who attend classes, not through force, but because they realize the importance and benefits of education. ARTICLE II. To The Classes ITEM I. To the in-coming seniors we leave the privilege of being able to gripe like mad when they discover how uncomfortable those front row gym seats really are. ITEM II. To the new juniors we leave the important feeling of taking a part in school activities. Along with the chance to be voted into clubs comes the fun of preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom, the biggest event in the school year for upperclassmen. ITEM III. To the sophomores we leave the thought that in just one short year they will be upperclassmen. Next year many extracurricular activities will be open for all sophomores. Along with football and sports for the boys, the girls will have a chance to serve as waitresses for the junior-Senior along with many other opportunities. ITEM IV. To the freshmen we leave the sensation felt during the complete first year of Senior High School plus a little advice. Set a goal and then strive to reach , it during your next four years. It takes much hard work and a great deal of faith, but when you look back and see the gap you have bridged, you'll realize it was worth any effort. ARTICLE III. To The Individuals ITEM I. Mary Ruth Pless leaves her attractive looks and snappy clothes to Tillie Beck. ITEM II. QI. R. Fowler hands down his best-all-around title to Bobby Pope. ' ITEM III. Although Elaine Medlin worked very hard at baton and dancing to prove her talent, she's willing to share honors with brother Tony. ITEM IV. Dan Everhart couldn't find anyone who was willing to take his Frankenstein act, so it goes with him. ITEM V. Nancy Alley, always overflowing with person- ality agreed to share a part of it with Patty Sue Taylor, who has plenty of her own. ITEM VI. Ed Covington wills his title of best looking boy to Eddie Cathell. ITEM VII. Phyllis Bost leaves her witty personality and comical ways to jane Nave. ITEM VIII. Carlyle Craven and Gene Wall leave their straight A reports and intellectual character to Curtis Williams and Mary Mel Farris. ITEM IX. Bill Lee and Alice Bruton leave their terrific athletic abilities to joe Sink and Morning Delane Bruton. ITEM X. Bill Hamm thinks that Levon Weaver is very capable of holding his most dependable title. ITEM XI. Bobby Coon Miller leaves his fine sports- manship to Bob Timberlake while Gladys Hemphill leaves hers to Edna Haynes. 'fCoon also leaves the it,' that was left to him by Tommy Snider that had its beginning seven years ago with Dirty Everhart to Tommy Bird-Dog Sink. ITEM XII. Helen Thomason is certain that Jody Foster is' one of the most reliable juniors. ITEM XIII. Gary Myers and Patricia Fry begueath their cute looks to jimmy Osborne and janet mith. ITEM XIV. In most opinions, it would be hard to find anyone as capable or versatile as Robert Hedrick, so we'll wait till next year to see who will fill the bill. ITEM XV. Betty Block leaves her title of friendliest to little sister Diane, making the third person to retain honor in the family. ITEM XVI. Bub Shirley takes his 'fbig brother attitude and fun loving ways with him, for none could carry them half as well as Bub. ITEM XVII. Rochelle Thomason leaves the test tube she has been associated with for the past several years in Miss Matthews' chemistry lab until another person comes along to fill it. ITEM XVIII. From all of the graduating seniors to all who remain in this senior high school building, we leave our love and the great attachment that we have felt for our school, our schoolmates, and our teachers. To the members of our staff, this book is a constant reminder of hours spent in planning, toiling, hoping and rejoicing. So many things are included in the production of the LEXICON- minute details-without which the book could never be a c'whole g thergfore, it is with sincerest gratitude that we give this page and thanks to each individual who had any part in making the 1954 LEXICON a dream come true. Especially to our advisor, Miss Betty ,Io Ring, who so willingly and patiently gave of her time, energy, and advice, we say, thank youf' We are deeply grateful also to Mr. Wike and Mrs. Harold F rady. Their gracious co-operation was indispens- able. The help of the entire faculty was a monument to patience, and very much appreciated. Much praise is due to Gloria Griffith, Caroline Swain, Snooky Money, Evelyn Holmes and Edna Haynes, our literary staff. Our very efiicient typists were Jimmy Lippard and Hazel Owen. Commendation also to Bobby Miller and Robert Fitz- gerald for the sports section, and to Alice Bruton, senior editor, Jeanette Williams, art editor, Gwendolyn Pullen, bookkeeper, and especially to Levon Weaver and Frazier Smith, photographers. Without the strong support of our advertisers and our business staff, the LEXICON could never have gone to press. Thank you, to Eddie Cathell, R. Fowler, Levon Weaver, Gladys Hemphill, and Homer Shipwash. Mr. Wm. Oliver Smith of Edwards and Broughton. made himself invaluable to the staff with much needed and useful helps. Thanks to him and also to Mr. T. A Redmon who did exceptional photography with individuals and groups.
