Years after graduating from high school, I was feeling very remi- iw! GE' niscent when Memory appeared before me and waved her magic wand. of Immediately, I was carried away into Old Father Time's library. Brows- pflg ing among the volumes, I came to an interesting looking set of books. As I passed before them a guide approached and said, Each year as E53 Old Father Time's clock ticked away 'the last days of May, a book was If- pushed upon a shelf in his library, until there was a set composed of four -F K volumes. The title was History of Class of '29, Lexington High School. A gl-3 I was in that class, I said as I drew forth the first book entitled ai eg, Freshmen. There were nine chapters in it. Looking at 'the title of each SEQ, 'VJ chapter, I read, September 100 Freshmen Enter' -High School. October, 'F A Adjustment to Surroundings, and on until I saw that there was a chapter 'am giving in detail the history of each month, from September to May. G25 , As my time was limited, I glanced hungrily at the contents ,of the Sophomore and Junior years. All of this was very interesting andrinvit- Ogg: ing, but what looked particularly interesting iwas the chapter entitled Junior-Senior Banquet. 2 I 2. ' , s., , . , XY ' ,I was about to turn away with a sigh of regretwhen a small diary 2 dropped from between the leaves of the Senior volume. Picking it up, the if ur guide gave me permission to read it, and it was like this: . - ' ' Iliff' . MAY, 1926- M , u ' 4 E E Dear Diary, in September about 100 noisy freshmen entered high 59' school, and it is as some authority on high school and colleges '-has said: mg I Every class has what is known as its freshmen year. Since we are any- thing but timorous, we admit that we were forced to undergo 'that embar- QD rassing experience. . Our class was divided into three sections, with Misses Mitchell, Miller, ,E and Mr. John Hunt as hom,e room teachers. We at once entered into the 'ff if high school life. Cabell Philpott made us very proud by winning his let- Qi 17 ter in football. Many boys showed interest in football, and gave much 5 rf' promise for good material. p i QE! Q, MAY, 1927- ' Somebody has said, To every action there is an equal reaction, and in a contrary direction. All the sophomores feel that this is true. From the year,of oppression, we passed into a year of anarchy. For nine months ws we laughed at and conducted a campaign of welcome for the freshmen. M ' ls, -! A Page Thirty-threeq -iff? Several girls in our class were attendants to the May Queen. MAY, 1928- A Dear Diary, another reaction set in at the beginning of our Junior year. We elected Ernest Staples, presidentg Betty-Russell, vice-president, and Ferdinand Watson, secretary and treasurer. After this we began a year of work. We furnished two members on the debating team, Gilmer Cross and Ernest Staples. We produced as stars on the football team, Qabell Philpott, Gilmer Cross, Woodrow Shoaf, Ernest Staples and Ferdinand Watson. Willie Veigh Leonard and Fannie Porter Cowles won medals for declamations. Probably the next important event of this year was the J unior-Senior entertainment. Under the leadership of xMiss Zealy, Miss Williams and Miss Ormand, weiplanned our entertainment, which we felt surpassed anything ever given before. ' MAY, 1929- This year we feel rather old. We are the honored seniors, and as a class we feel that we have fought a fight valiantly. Our students continue to rank high in scholarship and athletics. We are putting out an annual this year and we feel a wee bit proud. We feel sorry to know that our high school days are almost over, but we can't stay here forever. It is only a few more weeks before we dash for our last 8:35 class and sleep through the last afternoon class., So dear diary, good-bye. Probably when I am old and gray-haired, I will read you and THE SPOTLIGHT and muse over our good time in L. H. S. What will Miss Walker say if I can't read it? This horrid Latin has given me the headache. I cast my book aside lazily. Gradually, before I had thought anything was happening, I began to sense peculiar visions. In K. Shockley's Theatre on 48th Street, I found myself. A thunder- ing musical success, Skit Skat, by Mary McCarn was being presented with Pauline Lopp and Charlie Parks as stars. Girls by the carload charmed me with their dancing. I was startled when I recognized Lib Peebles and Laura Mae Young as leaders in the chorus. Between acts Wannamaker stages a Fashion Show. Miss America of 1934 and Miss North Carolina of 1935 are the models. They were none other than Winni- fred Ebelein and Zoe Richey. Leaving the theatre I hailed a taxi. The driver chews his gum fero- ciously-Woodrow Shoaf ! He gives me a copy of the Lexington Dispatch dated June 10, 1935. The glaring headlines read Leroy Meacham elected mayorg Walter Misenheimer, sheriff of county. Hastily I turn pages. On the editorial page I .note that William Hardister is editor and owner. Other items of interest are: Judge Irving Leonard, of the 18th Judicial District, is holding court this weekg James Anderson, a prominent civil engineer of Asheville, has been assigned the task of planning the Smoky Mountain Parkg Hubert Evans has accepted a responsible position with the Duke Power Company in Charlotte, and Bruce Craft has been ap- pointed a pilot of the United States Air Mail Service. The advertisements interest me almost as much as the news items. A full page is given to Liston Beck's chain of garages operating in fifteen cities of North Caro- linag Hal Hedrick, proprietor of Lexington Drug Company, is advertising a Rexall saleg Marvin Ijames is advertising his dairy products from a thoroughly up-to-date sanitary dairy. One unusual advertisement at- tracted my attention-that Marion Chetty had for sale at reduced prices a surplus stock of peanuts and popcorn. I read with interest a testimonial that Edna Whisenant had sent in for N ever Bald Hair Tonic. She tells her story of how she has lost so much hair and then this tonic revived her hair to its former state of health. Clayton Curry is the efficient superintendent of ,the gtg? Smithsonian Institute. I am very startled at hearing music made by the gag Salvation Army Trio, composed of Loyce Wagoner, Hubert Evans and ,in Homer Evans. 9 As I go from the hotel I meet Virginia McCrary coming out with all her former charm and dignity.
