The ruins of an almost forgotten 20th century civilization had been discovered and were in the process of being uncovered. The remains proved to be disappointing, how- ever. No record was found that would have proved to be of any cultural value. There were only the remains of a large brick building and a long flat stone with the strange inscription, LEXINGTON SCHOOL. The only thing of interest was a record kept faithfully by that ancient and learned scholar, Richard M. Irvin. This record was an ac- count of the development of the careers of the class graduating in 1957. Scholars translated the record as follows: Bruce Appleby became a great professor of English at a famous girls college. He often wrote letters to famous band leaders to express his opinions on their arrangements. Shirley Corwin became a great woman athlete. In the 1960 Olympics, she copped the title of the girl with the most freckles. Ed Davison, who comes from a long line of fighters, accomplished the impossible in a fifteen-round battle at Madison Square Garden. l-le defeated Rocky Marciano who gave him a hard fight in spite of his snow-white hair. Jack Harbaugh grew a long beard and became a hermit. He lived in a cave in the hills of Kentucky and made his living by making moonshine and selling it to Joel Smaltz. Margaret Irwin took up teaching as her profession. After her education was completed, she was offered a posi- tion at Vassar, but she turned it down in favor of teaching the third grade here at Lexington. Bill Ball raced motorcycles for a few years after his graduation, but later switched to automobiles. I-le was the first man to win at Indianapolis driving a kiddie car. Paul Cocanour became a famous explorer andmountain climber. One day, while he was climbing mount Ever- est for the seventh time, he captured a mermaid and brought it back to civilization. Sandra Boylan declared in her senior year that she hated men. She married one week after graduation and had six children, all of which were boys. Bill Crowl became President of the United States but was assinated at his inaugration by a mysterious figure in a black robe. Jack Ridgeway wrote short stories and poems, but none ever sold and he was reduced to selling pop bottles for a living. Judy Meckes did not cut her hair for twenty years. She finally married a barber who succumbed to temptation and who gave her a crew-cut. David Balph spent many years playing with third-rate bands in nite clubs. He finally got a band of his ovnm, though, and thereby became a fourth- rate band leader. Marjorie Shaffer and Mary Weaver became a famous comedy team. They have been compared to Mutt and J eff. Beth Hassig, being short of Statute, developed a stretching machine to gain height. She soon reached six feet, but was caught in a rainstorm and shrunk. Ronnie Armstrong's love for basketball won him a position with the Harlem Globetrottcrs. He never got to play much, though, so he formed his own team known as the Satellite Runners. Dan Tuttle began as a farmer, but later became president of a large dairy. When last heard of, he was trying to fill the holes in Swiss cheese with ice cream. Alberta Gleisinger remained an old maid throughout her life. She made her living by operating a home for stray cats and dogs. Saundra l-lershner directed her talents toward the field of modeling. She established a chain of clothing stores catering to tall women. Mary Kay Gore, being fond of orchards and its workers, became world's champion apple-picker in 1966. Betty Huvler and Susie Neal established themselves as proprietors of one of the country's largest junk yards. Bill Brown's ability to get along with the girls helped him to achieve success as a matinee idol. He starred in many pictures in which he was the only male. Beverly Kilgore and Arlene Larimore formed a team of sheep-shearers. They toured the country demonstrating their ability at state fairs. H Eugene Downs and Dave McCammon became singing bartenders at the famous Latin Quarter in New York. Tom Volz and Newt Young became great mathematicians. They enlarged upon Einstien's theory of relativity and were instrumental in preventing the third world war. Gene Purdy became a strong man in a circus Sideshow. In his spare time, he took a correspondence course in agriculture. Sandra Swigart became a recluse and wrote many books on such deep subjects as psychology and philosophy. Mary Williams, because of her literary ability, wrote campaign speeches for local politicians. Jim McLaughin, while mimicing Elvis Presely's guitar-playing one day, discovered the lost chord. Jennie Flick joined a circus and taught orphan monkeys good manners. Jennie always did have a soft spot in her heart for orphans. Dick Lewis took a fancy to classical music and became a famous violinist. Janet Walker, because of her cheerleading ability, became the first girl cheerleader at Annapolis. Emma Jo McDonough returned to Lexington several years after her graduation to teach the basketball players how to dance. Good for eo-ordination--so she said. Millie Noblet applied what she had learned in home economics and sold her home-made candy and chewing gum locally. Local dentists got rich overnight making false teeth for Lexington residents. Duke King became a great tree-surgeon but died of a broken heart when someone filed the teeth off his prun- ning saw. 25 Senior Play The Birds and The Boys CAST ' Adam Martin, an architect ........ 6 Cricket Martin, his wife . . Sandra Swigart STORY Cricket Martin, standing at the living room window beside her new husband, points toward the valley below. What lovely old buildings! Is it a monastery? T'hat's Youthville. lt's rather like Boys Town. You know -- where they put the best in the worst. From that moment Cricket's enthusiastic and perhaps too sympathetic heart is drawn toward the boys in the valley. At the same time two of the boys have been drawn toward the Mar- tins -- Tex, trying to identify an unfamiliar bird, and Eyes, trying to find something he can steal. Both accomplish their objcctivesg both learn to know Cricket, and Cricket learns from the girls next door, Debbie and her little sis- ter, of the local feeling against 'Youthville and of the attempt to drive it from the town. The play is of real people in a real world, grappling with our country's most disturbing problem, And yet it is a light-hearted play, with its moral never quite showing while it sets forth its belief in our youth and with a gay and courageous humor. 26 - 5 an : MS?
