Our structure has changed with the transfer of the eighth grade to Lylburn Downing and with the start of additions at the high school. We have gained a new principal and new members of the faculty. The composition and leadership of the student body has changed. New rules, methods, traditions, and programs have been begun and we feel that advancement has been the pervading spirit of this year. Nevertheless, our basic ideals and aims remain the same. Our new programs and institutions still strive to establish a balanced experience of scholastic, athletic, and social activities. We have relied upon the wisdom and experience gained in the past. Our leadership strives to build the same spirit and unity which we have long shown. Wisdom and basic ideals have provided the foundation for our advancement. We believe that much has been accomplished and will continue to be accomplished through our reliance on the valuable things of the past and our endeavor to improve through fresh, new ideas. 3 Dedication To one who, through her continuous work and enthusiasm, has provided a balanced combination of new ideas and methods with wisdom and experience, who, with her interest in her subject and in her stu- dents, has given her students a desire to excel; To another who, with her boundless enthusiasm, has added an invaluable spark and spirit to the school, who, with her concern for the students, has shown them the joys of learning; We, the Class of 1967, dedicate our Crystal to MRS. LUCILLE WEAVER and MRS. JUANITA PRICE. 4 Mrs. Weaver is highly entertained by her students ' translation. Mrs. Price finds way to cool off hot class. Mrs. Price grades theses. We have broadened our programs and maintained a wide curriculum. Our faculty forms a valuable source for guidance and inspiration through both the new and the old. 7 New Administration Brings Changes The retention of many customs and tradi- tions, the instigation of numerous progressive practices, and the preparation and planning to meet the future needs of our school have been the keynotes of the year, 1966-1967, at Lexington High School. Under the leadership of Mr. Frank Thompson, our new principal, this year has been one of labor, accomplishment, and dreams for the future. Frank L. Thompson A.B. William and Mary College M. Ed. Some of us entered Lexington High School in 1962, while others of us have joined the class more recently. We have retained traditional class spirit as we have incorporated new ideas. We began our eighth grade year by electing Scotty Barns president and Delores Bayne secretary-treasurer. Dick Shell served us on the Honor Court. Our Homecoming Representative was Delores Bayne. Various members of our class held club offices and participated in J.V. cheerleading and athletics. We became more active as a class during our freshman year. Zeke Ellington and Rita Claytor served as our class officers, while Mike Leary and Mary McKenna were members of the Honor Court. We elected Rita Claytor as Freshman Homecoming Princess. Members of our class increased their participation in school activities and advanced to varsity teams. Our sophomore year saw us emerge as leaders in student body life. Zeke Ellington was elected secretary-treasurer of the student body. Our class president was Monty Brothers, and Lee Wright was secretary-treasurer. We elected Bobby Pickral to the Honor Court. Rita Claytor again served as Homecoming Princess. For the first time, members of our class were varsity cheerleaders, and we again contributed much to both varsity and junior varsity athletics. In 1965, we were joined by juniors from Lylburn Downing High School. Bobby Pickral was elected vice president of the student body. Mike Leary and Lee Wright were our class officers, and Zeke Ellington, Mary McKenna and Jane Donald served on the Honor Court. Nancy Brown was our junior Homecoming Princess. Members of our class became leaders on the yearbook and newspaper staffs. Moreover, some of us gained membership in the National Honor Society and the Chemistry-Physics Honor Society. We decorated for our first dance, the Christmas Dance, in white and silver and counted it a big success. Chateau de Chambord was the theme of our enchanting prom. Our class played a prom- inent role in athletics and student organizations. At the end of our junior year, Zeke E llington and Jimmy Littlepage were our Boy ' s State Representatives, and Lee Wright and Susan Wise attended Girls ' State. Our senior year marked the culmination of our years of work and growth. Jimmy Littlepage led us as student body president. Zeke Ellington, chairman of the Honor Court, was assisted by seniors Monty Brothers and Joyce Snyder in leading the judicial system of our student government. Our class officers, Richard Brownley and Louise Gentry, ably led us in sponsoring our Homecoming Dance. Nancy Brown was elected Homecoming Queen and Jane Donald was chosen Maid of Honor. Diane Borgus was our Senior Representative. In October, members of our class received Letters of Nat- ional Merit recognition. Karen Dean and Zeke Ellington received Letters of Commendation, and Mary Catherine Slusser, Louise Gentry, Carol Newman, and Richard Brownley were designated as Semi-finalist. Mary Catherine Slusser, Louise Gentry, and Richard Brownley participated in Klassroom Kwiz , with Carol Newman serving as alternate. Gay Nicely and Diane Brown were Lexington representatives in Local Christmas parades. Senior privileges were expanded to include leaving classes early for lunch, having senior study halls, and entering the auditorium last for assemblies. As seniors, we assumed leadership in innumerable clubs and sports. As we leave Lexington High School to enter different ways of life, we remember the happy experiences and valuable relationships we have enjoyed. In future years, we will profit from the knowledge which we have acquired here. We, the Class of 1967, sincerely hope that we have contributed as much to our school as we have gained from it. Several new clubs have been formed, and these contribute their energies in working with the host of already active clubs. This com- bination of new clubs with the old ones has produced a fine extra-curricular program. 67 Executive Council Proposes New Amendments First Row: Clark Graff, Richard Brownley, Bucky Joyce, Row: Jimmy Littlepage, Louise Gentry, Andrea Turner, Stuart Morgan, Paul Coleman, Phillip Clayton. Second Susan Lewis, Chris Moorhead, Mr. Lindsay. Mr. Lindsay advises Executive Council. Serving to communicate ideas between students and faculty and to promote coordination and understanding, the Executive Council furnishes leadership and guidance. As the governmental body, the Council is composed of stu- dent body and class officers. The Executive Council meets every two weeks and discusses problems which have appeared in the school life and operation. This year the Executive Council sponsored dress-up days, special assemblies, and voted upon new amendments to the constitution. Mr. Lindsay served as faculty advisor, and Jimmy Littlepage presided over the meetings. 68 Honor Court Upholds School Standards To see that honor is upheld at Lexington High School is the basic aim of the Honor Court. This year the Honor Court has particularly stressed the value of personal honesty and the necessity of the concern of all students. Mr. Keen provided the faculty guidance, and elected class representatives constituted student leadership. Sev- eral assemblies were conducted with guest speakers from college honor councils. Honor Court Officers: Mary Susan Dobyns, Mary Ellen Sorrells, Zeke Ellington, and Monty Brothers. ■ ; First Row Sitting: Mr. Keen, Monty Brothers, Zeke Ellington, Mary Susan Dobyns, Mary Ellen Sorrells. On the basis of test scores, 14, 000 National Merit Semifinalists are selected and Letters of Commen- dation are awarded to those students just below the cut-off point. National Merit Honors are given in order to identify students of unusual intellectual attainment and promise and to help as many as possible attend the college of their choice. Six seniors from Lexington High School were recognized this year. Karen Dean and Zeke Ellington received Letters of Commendation. Carol Newman, Mary Catherine Slusser, Louise Gentry, and Richard Brownley were named Semi- finalists. After further tests, the four Semi-finalists were declared Finalists. Every week, hundreds of advertisements for qualified computer programmers go unanswered. The problem is, there just aren’t enough qualified computer program mers to go around. It’s an awful waste. Chances are, most high school graduates already have the brains for the job. And if they used their brains to get the training, they could be earning very good salaries. If you have the brains, and the initia- tive to use them, contact ECPI for a free aptitude test. Then you can get the training. It won’t be easy, and it won ' t be cheap. But it will be thorough. So thor- ough, it can turn you into a qualified programmer in 12 weeks. (Or 35 weeks if you go just nights or Saturdays.) So if you want to be able to answer those ads for computer programmers, start by answering this one. Areas of study were therange of subject offerings, methods of instruction, registration procedures, ability grouping, scheduling, teacher performance. Various students participated in this study and positive steps were taken to improve conditions and curriculum of the school. Mr. Thompson headed the committee. Mr. Thompson guides activities of the student Evaluation committee. Evaluation Committee: Left to right: First Row: Teresa Muperspaw, Joyce Snyder, Gloria Armstrong, Dana Clark, Sandra Merchant. Second Row: Sally Womeldorf, Loraine Levitch, Janet Pickett, Zeke Ellington, Karen Dean. Third Row: Harold Plott, Bobby Craft, Phil Clayton, Chip Miller, David Garnett. Fourth Row: Richard Brownley, Linwood Smothers. 139 In this changing world, there is a tendency to reject everything that is old for everything that is new. However, there is great value in incorporating new, progressive ideas and methods into a system based on tradition, wisdom, and experience. We believe that Lexington High School and its supporting community have done well in attempting to sort out the best of the new and of the old and in combining them effectively. fY)a .
