' X al ' il V' u f ,e Zflzraugh the years VVith trembling knees and chattering teeth, we, insignificant little freshmen entered the vast portals of L. H. S., way back in 743. QLong time, eh ?j Those dreadful tales QD that were drilled into our innocent minds by the upperclassmen were soon proven false as we became more acquainted with the faculty members. With our class came the new principal, Mr. QDing-Dongj Bell, lVliss Gertrude Morrison, and Mr. Farrar fsigh! sigh!j. It wasn't too long until we found our Way around L. H. S., under the capable guidance of Thurston Thistlewaite, that product of Miss Sieg's imagination. In late November we elected Clovis Baker as president of our class. At mid-term we chose Alice Rice and Bob Knox to the Executive Committee along with Carolyn Black and Jimmy lVIurray as representatives on the Honor Court. On becoming Freshmen, the girls of our group adopted the sophisticated habit of using lipstick. It was only Tangee, Natural! During the term We lost Mary Stuart Brugh and Jack Edgren Chow about that, Anna FJ, but their empty desks were soon occupied by Bessie Bocock and Dick Anderson. You can ask Wiggles about that one. lVhen we became Sophomores, we felt that we were very worldly and sophisticated. We started the year right off by electing Doot Agnor, president, Bessie Bocock and Bob Knox to the Executive Committee. We can't leave out Annette Iannuzzi Cbeginning of her political careerj, and Jimmy Murray, our representatives on the Honor Court. All the girls of our class that year had crushes Cand you couldn't blame themj on the seniors and some Cfewj even managed to date them. Also, with the addition of lVIerl Reese and Jean lVIarshall, lovelight could be seen dancing in the eyes of some of us. In the spring, our class was honored by Ruth Anne and Clovis, having leads in the Mikado September rolled around again and Whadda' ya' know! ! We were Juniors. Changes were taking place rapidly with Miss Clement, Mrs. Hill, and Mr. Lynch coming and Miss Dunlap, Miss Sieg, and lVIr. Farrar going. While speaking of leaving, we all said good-bye to Bessie, didn't we Guy? V Well, once more election time came along and we elected Doot president of our class. Janie and Snap Bean were our delegates to the Executive Committee. Annette Cagainj and Roland represented us on the Honor Court. BREWBAKEILI. . . . . . . ..... . . . .Coach During the first season after Coach Pete Brewbakefs return from the Navy, the Lexington High School rlet Hurricane fought to a two-Way tie for third place in the district by scoring 175 points to its opponent's 89, and winning seven, tying one and losing two games. L. H. S. put a fast, heavy team on the field, and, in most cases, a. winning team. Before the first game, the boys elected Charlie Conner and james lXfIays as co-captains, and they were able leaders throughout the season. Lexington's first game was with Martinsville on the L. H. S. field. It had rained for two days and the game was played in deep, slippery mud, but that did not prevent Coach Brewbaker's boys from defeating the favored Martinsville eleven by a score of seven to six. Lexingtorfs second game was a hard-won zo to I2 victory against V. S. D. B. in Staunton. Although the V. S. D. B. team was game and offered a constant threat to the L. H. S. eleven, they were not able to muster strength enough to down the determined Hurricane. l32l X 5 0 Then Lexington met the first of its two defeats when it fell 39 to o before a large, pounding Covington squad on the V. M. I. field. The Hurricane fought back gamely the whole time, but the stream of fresh Covington replacements proved too much and the Lexington team suffered its worst defeat of the season. Next. the L. H. S. squad traveled to Winchester and there bowed I9 to 6 to a strong Handley High team. Though having outplayed their opponents the second half, the L. H. .S. boys were unable to overtake the Judges and the Scarlet Hurricane suffered its second and last defeat. The Hurricane bounced back from the defeated list when it invaded Staunton and smashed a hopeful Lee High squad I4 to 0. This victory started the Hurricane on its long row of wins. The next week., the Lexington team, playing the part of a lion, allowed an unsuspecting Front Royal squad to come into its lair, and then mauled it 26 to 6. In the first half only Front Royal scored, but in the second half the slow-starting L. H. S. squad came back fighting and streaked through the bewildered visiting team four times for scores. Lexington then crushed its traditional rival, Harrisonburg, for the first time in five years at its Home- coming game on the Washington and Lee field, by a score of I9 to o. The Harrisonburg team couldn't seem to operate well, but the Lexington team moved right along and scored easily three times. Then Lexington battled to a o-o tie with Waynesboro, with whom Lexington tied for third place in the district, at lfVaynesboro, in its first and only night game of the season. The fray was thick and fast with both teams, especially Lexington, threatening each other's goal, but neither could penetrate its opponents defense when near pay dirt. ' The Scarlet Hurricane ended its regular season with a bang when it massacred a weak Clifton Forge team by a score of 44 to 7 on the Washington and Lee field.. L. H. S. demonstrated superiority in this contest from the first whistle when a cleverly executed reverse netted a score on the opening kick-off. Five plays later, the Hurricane scored again, and the first string left tl1e field. From then on, the second and third strings played al- most entirely, and showed well all the way through. Lexington's last game was a 39 to o post-season victory over a favored Bedford High School eleven. The Bedford squad, champions of District IV, went on the field confident, but their hopes were scuttled when L. H. S. unleased a fast and deceptive running attack and murderous passing attack. This was the best game the L. H. S . team played all season and it was a Hnale for the IQ46 season. Wearing the football uniform of L. H. S. for the last time were Co-Captains James Nfays and Charlie Conner, Eddie Mays, Guy Agnor, Earl Agnor, Charlie Agnor, I. P. Mason, Bobby Poston, Bob Mitchell, Richard Ayers, Clovis Baker, and Jimmy Murray. THESCHEDULE Lexington ....... 7-Nfartinsville. Lexington .... .. zo-V. S. D. B... Lexington . . o-Covington. . . M anager Although the Scarlet Hurricane basketeers appeared inexperienced in early season games, they soon became a smooth-functioning, fast-ball-handling quintet, under the able tutoring of Coach Brewbaker. Seven returning lettermen formed the basis of the team. ' Opening the season against Spottswood on December Io, only two weeks after football season ended, the Hurricane rang up a convincing 34-13 victory. However, five straight games were to be lost before another could be won. Two of these de- feats came at the hands of a taller and more experienced Glass High team of Lynch- burg, by scores of 62-18 and 49-26. After the Christmas vacation, L. H. S. lost a close 28-21 game to Winchester in the first league game. Three nights later, the Staunton Leemen edged the boys in red and white in a thriller 41-37. Waynesboro completed the list of successive losses by taking a 3 5-24 victory. The afternoons of hard work began to tell. Clifton Forge became Lexington's first league victim, 38-23. Covingtonls highly regarded quintet was next, L. H. S. l34l taking a 29-27 victory in the best game of the year. The next night, the Scarlet Hurricane held Jefferson High of Roanoke to a 38-3 I score. Following examinations, Lexington won a second victory over Clifton Forge by a score of 33-19. Traveling to Bedford, the locals next defeated the Otters 30-22. Then the Hurricane traveled to VVinchester and gained sweet revenge by copping a 36-32 victory. Staunton evened Lexington's league record by taking a hard-fought battle, 47-41. Coach BreWbaker's lads have improved with each game, as comparative scores indicate, and the remainder of the season should prove highly successful. Scoring thus far has been led by Doot Agnor and Bill Bean. S C O R E S Lexington Spottsvvood. . Lexington Lynchburg. . . Lexington Lynchburg. . . Lexington Wincliester. . . Lexington Staunton ..... S. are certain of this. We've had a grand group of girls out for practice this year and it's easy to see that there's swell material for winning teams of the future in this group. Now for a little info' about the first six games of this season. We had a practice l36l ,Mai 21 , fa-6624 flfiy Wi Vfcpol at i nguoi game with Southern Seminary which we won. This game, the first of the season, didn't count, but it showed us a lot of things that We had to improve on. Our first real game was with Natural Bridge and was a victory for us with a score of 21-13. Coming back after the Christmas holidays we played Natural Bridge once again. YVe were less fortunate, and the game turned out to be a tie with a score of 18-18. Next we traveled to Waynesboro With high spirits and great determination to beat our first big rival. This game also turned out to be a tie, 23-23. Our first downfall came when we played Clifton Forge with a score of 25-I8 in their favor. It was in this game that Sissy', was injured and because of this was unable to play any more ball this season. Again we were defeated by Covington 29-23. The girls came back with re- newed pep after the first half, but were unable to make up for the number of points they were behind in the first half. Once more we played Clifton Forge and again We were defeated 30-26. The Mountaineers caused our first downfall and We hoped it would be our last. This time we traveled to Bedford and got back in the groove. The game was a victory with a score of 29-26. The two teams were given a very nice party after the game. . Even though all the games were not in our favor it's the sport We play for and the fun, nevertheless, it does help us to win. S C O R F. This year the Library Club, consisting of thirty members, has been exceptionally busy carrying out many and varied activities. During November We had as our Book Week topic Books Are Bridges and presented an exhibit of models of the different types of bridges found in Rockbridge County. Each model was made by a member of the Club. In addition, under the direction of Mrs. Boykin, we presented a pantomime of book characters in assembly and gave prizes to the two students naming the most characters. In December, Mrs. Boykin began teaching the French Classes and since then the Club has had to take full, charge of the Library. At times, it has been hard goingi' but it has been a splendid experience for us and has surely taught us how to assume responsibility, and, above all, the necessity for absolute accuracy in everything we do. At Christmas, the Club had attractive bulletin board displays depicting both spiritual and festive Christmas scenes. We're not being conceited, but we did receive many compliments. Also our Christmas party was a huge success. At this time, we're beginning inventory, and among our many activities to come during the spring term is that of mending books.
