It is intended to form for the classmates of 1937 a chapter from their own lives. For the alumni, we hope that it will bring them in closer touch with us and keep them still boys and girls at heart. Pyitnessesi Siyflfll-' DICK SMITH SYD SMITH VIRGINIA CCUPER ' NED BURKS -22420 tif' Aura iTHECRYSTAL'- -1'9'3'7l ZAR Twenty Years After T IS the year 1957 and the class of ,37 is just gathering for its first reunion inside the now ivy-covered walls of L. H. S. We are immediately attracted across the halls by that Hollywood box-office attraction, Bev Read, as ever surrounded by a mob of admiring fems. Quietly watching him is one with a modest but very busy jaw, Hubert Beatty, president of a chewing-gum factory doing a booming business. There is one individual who is quite at home, Jimmy Cook, now a rising prof in his dear old high school. He seems to be busily discussing the latest fads in education with Carl Varner, president of Bridgewater College, and with Bobby Latture, head of an educational institution for Women, the physical ed. director of which is Elenora Faison, who excels in teaching people how to keep from catching cold. Various and sundry unions are well represented. T he happiest seems to be smiling Ben Young lVIorris, head of the Soda Jerkers' Association. Syd Smith is in charge of the A-B-C Union. Ahal In addition, Masoii Deaver is a huge success as president of a national radio concern. One of his announcers is Henry Kirkpatrick, who supplies, in addition to static, the latest reports on that powerful Central American dictator, Howard Brooke. To lessen the tension, we remember that Ned Burks has superseded Jack Benny, and Dick Smith is a second Ted Husing. ' Fred Berry is busily explaining about his latest crop of alfalfa to John Swink, who is an old married man now, taking his milk, by the way, from N uckols and lVIurray Dairy. Sue Dunlap is also married and has a cheery home with singing birds as a result of the persuasive sales talk of Charlie-boy Olsen, successful agent for the Contented Canary Cage Company. Nettie Agnor has got herself hitched, too, and Mfargaret Mt1r1'ay seems happy with her professichial football player. A tinkling piano in the next apartment -Cyes, the same old piano but the cover is raggedj attracts our attention and we find Lucy Lee lVIorrison, accompanist for Majoi' Bowes, playing hilary Virginia lVIcCoy's latest composition for GOLD DLGGERS OF ' 57. lVIyra lVIcCormick, eHicient head librarian at the public library in Kalamazoo, is carrying on a literary conversation with Sabie Couper, whose cartoons in Esquire are a veritable -if 21 Bc. SHI, i THE CRYSTAL: 21' 9 - 3 - 7-.I- ' '1-K5 national institution! lncluded in this group is lliiriam Olsen, who writes columns in the paper on correct manners. She seems to be engrossed with accounts of 'KPose Fletcher's experiences teaching les frmzcais enfants to jmrlcr anglais, in France. Speaking of France reminded us of Casey Willianis, an imposing diplomat there. Ma1'ietta Hart spends all her weekends, and time in between, in Covington, but at the moment, she is fascinated by Bob Lemmon, standing in a chair on the stage, the millionth Charles Atlas quack. John VVeathers has turned into a gigolo Cin his spare time he gigs alonej, and Geraldine Troutman is still looking for ten-acre fields. . It does our heart good to get together again to talk over old times and we resolve to do it again. VVe were so sorry to miss Pete Brugh, the state cop, but unfortunately he was busy keeping his eye on Bill lVIackey, whose reckless abandon in manipulating his trucks is reported to be positively astounding. lllatt holds the door open for us. He looks not a day older than he used to. He is still wearing that old hat with great style. Coach T THE beginning of the season Coach VVoodson was faced with the problem of teaching about twenty-Hve light and, for the most part, inexperienced boys the fundamentals and finer points of the game. Then he had to put eleven men on the field who could stand up against heavier teams. The starting eleven averaged only about one hundred and thirty-six or seven pounds. The team opened the season with an impressive I 5-7 victory over Central of Low Moor. The following week a strong Covington team pounded out a 2 5-O victory, which was the only bad defeat of the season. The team lost a heart-brealcer to Staunton, 6-O, and then dropped another game by the same score to a bigger Bedford team. In both of -5:4 zs 120 Qin, 'i.THECRYSTAI.- N1'9'3'7l 41-sg these games close scoring attempts were missed. The Radford game was canceled due to the condition of the held at Radford. The next week brought a victory over Hot Springs, 7-6. Yardage was made almost at will, but the eleven couldn't get the points for a larger score. An inspired Lexington team fought off a bigger and heavily favored Clifton Forge team for nearly four Whole quarters, but weakened in the last five minutes to lose I4-O. Lexington won by forfeit from Buena Vista, who was forced to cancel the remainder of its schedule. The players drew praise for their style of play which showed that good coaching had been absorbed, and they gained the reputation of being fighters. STARTING LINE-UP SM1'r1'1, R. ...... .,..... 'El 39 ll'- Xnr X iiTHECRYSTAL: 21-9-3.711 Z X 'I-V5 The cflssembly O WE have assembly today ? School is saturated with the question, for it looks eagerly forward to that half hour period on various mornings when all eleven score or so of us fill the auditorium. The first of a number of interesting outside speakers was Dr. Henry W. Duboise, a Presbyterian minister from South Carolina, with a delightful dialect. On October second he discussed the four things a man must do from a poem by Van Dyke: Think without confurioyz, CZBCIVZJU' Love his fellow men, si1zce1'ely,' Act from honest motifves, purely,- Trust in God and Plea-ven, securely. The eighth of Octobe1', lldr. Thompson, by giving amazing statistics on fatalities and injuries resulting from automobile wrecks, startled us into a realization of the necessity for safer driving. Optirnistically, he concluded: And I hope you'1l live a long time. Mr. Forest Fletcher talked of his trip to the Olympic Games last summer: what really happened to a certain member of the women's team who refused to keep training 5 details on the Way things are being run in Germany, and a fascinating personal interview With Count Felix von Lucknor, the most romantic figure of the W01'ld Wa1'. November tenth M1'. R. N. Latture explained clearly to us in one short period the objectives, principles, and policies of socialism, communism, and fascism. In closing he pointed out the many advantages of our kind of democracy. Following this, on the twenty-fourth, Dr. litlurray, who annually brings bird lore of real interest to the students, explained how bird songs are recorded, and played records from his valuable collection. Early in December, Dr. Cole, lecturer from Australia, gave the student body a vivid picture of his native land, Which, it is to be feared, many of us think of as a vast wasteland full of cannibals and kangaroos. Just before the Christmas holidays the boys' civics class presented an assembly in the form of a ''man-in-the-street'' radio broadcast, a realistic atmosphere being produced by the electrically wired microphone. At intervals a representative for the sponsor, the CRYSTAL store, advertised with great gusto. Between February nineteenth and March ninth, there were five more outstanding assemblies: first, a heated debate between Washiiigtorl and Lee and University of Vir- ginia on maximum hours and minimum wages being controlled by Congress 5 second, lVI1'. Williani Hinton's encouragement upon the subject of Work, third, an inspiring talk by Dr. McKee, a missionary to the Belgian Congo fwe came away eager to depart at once for service in Africaj 5 fourth, a dramatization of three scenes from Silas lllarner by the Sophomore English Class, and last, a talk on the town water supply by lVIr. Hugh Rice. These half hours have, and certainly will continue, to bring us a wealth of entertain- ment and a broader understanding of the world today. -ai 40 is ANI! Boykin, prepared, and yesterday opened to the public, an exhibit which is drawing many spectators from the town, as well as an enthusiastic student body. The theme about which the exhibition is built is progress and growth, and this idea has been rather cleverly developed through the medium of an amusement park or fair, complete With all its gadgets for enlightening the mind and enlivening the spirits. Tickets are sold in the form of ballots, to be Cast in the contest to elect the most popular book. The gaiety of the county fair is emphasized by the red ribbon streamers given out at the gate. The rooms are hung with many-colored pennants and balloons. On the Hrst table is a display of small dolls in various poses studiously perusing books of Mother Goose Rhymes. On the adjoining table an airplane from Charles A. Lind- bergh's We has made a forced landing by the ferris wheel. Characters from Little Womerz, Understood Betsy, Laughing Lad, and other widely read novels fill the seats of the wheel. For those who yearn to know all the answers, an Information Booth has been erected, backed by sturdy encyclopedias and dictionaries. The next representation traces transportation through its many stages from walking to travel by air. Miniature sandals, the rickshaw, carriage, Wagon, canoe, steamboat, and airplane a1'e arranged to show the development the world has made in methods of conveyance. Among the large, beautifully bound volumes the Library has recently acquired are Scott's Quentin Dur- ward and Ivanhoe, Charles Read's The Cloister and the Pfearth, MH1'gRl'Ct Mitchell's Gone With the Plfinzl, and Hervy Allen's Anthony Adverse. The merry-go-round fea- tures The Dual of Queens, The Iiouse of Exile, So Red the Rose and other Well-known books. Dolls, cleverly costumed to depict the principal characters, stand in little compart- ments on the revolving wheel with a tinkling music box hidden underneath. A colonial estate illustrates progress in building the home, and books about foreign lands compose the international group. Finally, a scientific display presents specimens of rock, books of biological experiment, medical progress, and other intriguing features, climaxed with the electrical exhibit by the physics department, which fascinated visitors. In every respect, this praiseworthy effort of the Library Staff promises to be a success for it has been enthusiasticall ' endorsed by the high school students and the com- , 5 munity. Spring holiday! And luck would have it that I was in Lexington, the night of April 2, when a variety show U-Name-It was in progress at Lexington High School. There was Elenora Faison with all the mannerisms of one, a venerable history teacher, telling experience after experience of former days 5 and Bob Lemmon, lumbering in to teach geometry to dumb-owls and Hat-heads, boasting lustily because he has taught thirteen years without the bug catching him. In civics class, Fred Berry sat mildly by enduring a variety of current events-everything from Hollywood to Wixicllell -when suddenly Henry Taylor appears to suggest a little project that will be good practice for the boys. In assembly, an announcement was made by the athletic head, who truer than fiction still closed his eyes and pulled his ear. flncidentally, we understand his chair fell over backwards with him yesterday! D Stuart Faison portrayed the part of this professor, Louise Bradley's foreign words and dainty gestures indicated clearly that the person on the spot was none other than the French teacher. A study hall under a very energetic soul with a twangy pronunciation, played by Mary lVIorrison, was interrupted by a fast-talking librarian CElla Banks Weathersl, and a teacher who continually complained of the coolness of the commercial classroom. This icicle was Edythe Alphin, of the business class. Ann Read's s ectacle liftin and continual et out a clean sheet of paper was P g g 1 of course, our English teacher. Edith lVIcKemy could never have been better, her nervous gesticulations and regular pencil workouts indicated beyond doubt our Latin teacher. Ned Burks, delightful school wit, was the master of ceremonies, and the acts consisted of magic, dancing, and some grammar grade performers. Elsie Donald, Pete Agnor, Mary Desha and Dick Smith were the actors in a skit from Oihello. Altogether, the entire show was splendid. fW1TH AIIOLOGIES 'ro JEAN VINSON, '39.J +E-l 47159 NH 'i.'TTHE CRYSTAL: N1- 9 - 3 - 7 L 41 tm Jokes turned a little pale.
