He is an ardent tan of the New York Yankees. He shows genuine interest in and devotion to his work as a school administrator, and, above all, he is a devoted husband and father. From beginning to end, this year was an extra special year filled with memories that will linger in the heart of each student for the years to come. To the seniors it has been a year of endings and new beginnings. Senior privi- leges, class rings, the last high school prom, the works of Shakespeare and Chaucer, and graduation-these mean that high school days are-over. Juniors will remember presenting their class play, de- corating for their first prom, sweating U. S. History tests, and taking National Merit Scholarship tests as outstanding moments in their Junior year. The Sophomores sold magazines, dissected frogs, worms, and starfish while learning the elements of biology, and worked on research papers as they began to feel that they were indeed a vital part of Lexington High School. Meet Bat Mastersonf' MQMENTS REMEMBER The Freshman class members ioined the chorus, band, and various clubs, ardently observed the rules of Rat Day, as they worked hard to become worthy members of the student body. The teachers helped us to attain new and greater goals as we worked together to make Lexington High School an asset to our community, our state, and our nation. Dependability, initiative, co-operativeness, a magnetic personality -all the good qualities of a leader were con- sidered when homeroom officers and Student Council representatives were elected in September. On September 8 each pupil at L.H.S. became a member of one of the thirteen clubs provided by the school for students' education and enioyment. A chocolate covered popsicle, please. IN YEARS V131 3 .101 0.4 liz' COME The well-coached basketball and baseball teams made us very proud of their sense of fair play and their athletic ability. An active Beta Club presented two assemblies and spon- sored several worthwhile proiects during the year. State Fair holidays, Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving and Christmas added to the holiday excitement around the school and increased student extra-curricular activities im- mensely. Unexpected fire drills, dreaded piano recitals, class plays, interesting assemblies, plans for the Junior-Senior Prom, practicing for the Spring Concert, school elections, Student Council activities, the issuing of report cards, and last- minute rushes to meet deadlines by the Wildcat and The Cat's Paw staffs made 1959-1960 a happy, busy school year. She is a graduate of Lexington High School, Class of 1940. Her genu- ine interest in the students and their careers has through the years endeared her to hundreds of Lex- ington young people. To have been delegates to the 1959 Palmetto Girls' State was an honor Roberta Lindler and Carolyn Sease can not easily forget. Under the sponsorship of the American Legion Auxil- iary, Girls' State teaches its delegates the responsi- bility of being good citizens. BEVERLY CARTER CI-IOSEN MISS FOOTBALL OF '59 Highlighting the excitement and anticipation of the Langley-Bath-Clearwater vs. Lexington football game on October 16 was the crowning of Lexington High's Miss Football of l959. The activities began shortly before kick-off time, when each senior football player escorted his at- tractive sponsor onto the field. At the half, as the bond formed a large heart and played Let Me Call You Sweetheart, the sponsors entered the formation and stood in anxious suspense. Time drew nearer to the exciting moment when Carolyn Sease was named runner-up. Then, after an instant of hushed expectation, Beverly Carter was proclaimed Miss Football of 1959. Team captain for the game, Reuben Shackelford, placed the crown of gold sequins upon Beverly's head. The team was seriously hurt by the loss of two key players for most of the season because of iniuries. Thad Bruner was injured in the first game and was out for the remainder of the season. Bob Looney was hurt while practicing for the second game of the season, and missed the next five games. The rest of the team carried on very well and' Lexington fans will long remember the substitute quarterbacking of Floyd Corley, the running of Norris Wingard, Willard Bickley, and Billy Efird, the kicking of David Anderson, the time line play of Jimmy Compton, and the rest of the team's great support which gave the Wild- cats another winning season. W. lngram is to be commended for completing his twenty-fifth year as football coach at Lexington High School. In this time he has never had.a losing season, and his teams have brought him 'I77 victories. There were only 44 losses, and 8 ties. His excellent coaching has molded many top-notch teams which have made Lexington known for its athletic record. Jimmy Compton, a senior and star tackle for the Wild- cats, was chosen as a member of South Carolina's team for the Shrine Bowl game in Charlotte, North Carolina, on December 5. Jimmy will be ranked among the outstanding graduates of the Class of 1960 not only for his athletic performance but also for his high scholastic standing and good character. He was further honored this year by being chosen on the Rev. E. P. Bell's first team All-State. At the close of the 1958-59 basketball season with a team that had a 12-7 record, it was anticipated that the 1959-60 team at Lexington High School could top this mark, because veterans Jimmy Compton, Thad Bruner and Bob Looney would return. The 1959-60 team, however, was not able to reach its potential because unexpected factors hampered the team from the beginning, Four of the first six players were plagued with iniuries or operations. Although the team closed the regular season with a 4-12 record, the spirit and determination of its members remained undaunted. GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM DISPLAYS PLENTY OF SCRAP The T959-60 edition of the girls' basketball team gave the fans plenty of thrills both at home and away. Playing a schedule of sixteen games against teams largely in the Columbia area, a hotbed of South Carolina basketball, the girls held their own and posted an 8-8 record in regular season play. The team will lose two excellent players, Beverly Carter and Eleanor Drafts, through graduation, but with at least one season's experience behind several of this year's team, Lexington fans can look forward to another representative team in T960-61. Ingram, turned in a fine performance, closing the season with an 8-3 record. The performance of the 1959 team was a continuation of the many good records that the Wildcats have turned in since baseball became a regular part of the athletic program. During 1959, the Wildcats outscored their op- ponents by a total of 81 to 27, scoring 17 runs in one game, 13 in another, and 12 in each of two more. The hopes of the 1960 baseball team are bright due to the large number of experienced starters returning from the 1959 team. Regardless of the outcome of the 1960 season, spectacular or other- wise, it is certain that Lexingtonians will be proud of the fine spirit and good sportsmanship displayed by members of the team.
