The halls are cold and dark. So are the classrooms (when unoccupied) and the thermo- stats are set at 65° during the winter days. Coats, jackets, sweaters, layers of clothing are worn for additional warmth. Paper is recycled — memos from the office are later cut into notepads by teachers. Tests are printed on front and back. Lunch boxes and bags are the usual, not the exception. Car pools are common, as one person one car is no longer the “in” thing, and more students turn to the traditional old yellow bus to get to school. Sound like something from the Dark Ages? No way! This year, through the concerted efforts of the administration, faculty, and student body, LHS has cut corners. The ef- forts and results have not been negative, however, but positive. Cooperation by all at LHS to conserve energy and funds has enabled us to pave the way for the future. More computers, science equip- ment, a new building, tennis court, and even a much-need- ed sewer system have been made possible because we all cut corners — on necessi- ties as well as on luxuries. This combined effort at cutting gave the BEARER staff its theme for this year- book. We began to “toss around” the idea — and were amazed at all the “cuts” in- volved in everyday school life. We cut away from the old and begin the new school year. We cut up daily through spirit shown at sports events, in friendly gatherings, or in class when things get dull. We cut down on personal expenses by watching the movie on TV instead of at the theater; by taking a part- time job because parents’ jobs have been cut back or cut out. Sometimes this results in cutting grades, cutting phone calls short, or cutting it close in get- ting to school on time. Practices are cut short so all teams can have the opportunity to practice in the same building. There’s always red tape to cut through in the office. We have short cuts we take in studying for exams, getting homework, or in getting to the other side of campus. Some get cut from the sports teams, while others cut a piece of the action and cut down the nets. Some students are a cut above the rest, as others cut through the crowd to make their mark. We cut time in Band, cut deep in Ag., cut out in Home Ec., cut film in Annual Staff, cut the lawn after school, cut in at dances, cut paper in elementary classes and in the office, cut off unnecessary lights and heat, cut out field trips, cut around memo- ries. We look for costs cutters at the supermarket, get cut down by friend and foe. We even have to cut off locks when combina- tions are forgotten or jammed. And the cut goes on ... and on ...
