Ten-minute break means freedom from the old grind It’s five minutes before the bell is to ring dismissing first period. Students sit and ponder on what all they can do once they are free from the work chambers. One student asks another the time. Since most students have their watch set right with the bell, the other student answers, ‘‘One minute, 13 seconds.” So they grab up their books and make some last min- ute adjustments. RRIINNGG. The bell that rings sixteen times daily and dismisses students from their classes gave students a break from the old grind of class work. Students accustomed themselves to certain routines at the be- ginning of each semester. “At the begin- ning of school five minutes seemed like two, but as time goes by I get more ac- customed to the classes I have and can make it there and still have time to social- ize, said Stacy Barnett. For many people the five minutes of time served as a mini-study hall. Home- work was quickly completed and students busily crammed for exams and talked about upcoming tests. The ten-minute break between fourth and fifth periods was used by most stu- dents as sort of a social break. Some students rounded up friends to loiter over the latest gossip while others met their someone special to have private conver- sations. Well, it’s ten minutes before the bell is to ring — students seem to-anticipate freedom from “the old grind” until tomor- row morning at 8:00. RRIINNGG. Class dismissed! V® Cutting it Close You’re just about to jump into a mountain of chocolate ten feet deep, and suddenly, you hear a strange, terrible noise. Is it a siren? No. The phone ringing? Oh no, it’s the alarm clock! The mound of chocolate fades away and you open your eyes, only to have them stabbed by harsh daggers of bright light. “Okay,” you say to yourself, “why am I awake?” And then reality hits you slowly, but forcefully — you are supposed to go to school to- day! “Better get up quick,” you say to yourself, or the maternal unit is going to be on my case.” Quick? Not hardly, but you do manage to peel yourself out of the warm, shel- tering folds of the covers. “Shower. That’s what I need, a shower.” Making your way to the bathroom, you find that the floor is jumping up and stumping your toes and the door to the bathroom isn’t open after all. So begins the early morning rou- tine of reluctantly getting ready for the dreaded school day. Sound fa- miliar? After being awakened, Kenny Killen re- alizes that he has only 25 minutes to be at school. 12 Lateness
