Most travel was done by buggy or wagon, There weren't enough cars for dashing or dragging. 2 5 With corn bread and molasses as our daily fare, Meals were quite easy to prepare. Today's food comes in prepackaged supplies, But the main course seems to be hamburgers and french fries. 8 Our lessons of the 3 R's were learned quite soon, There was no need to calculate a landing on the moon. The curriculum today is varied you see, From reading circles to Photography. Human nature never changes and that is a joy, A girl is still a girl and a boy is still a boy. Overall it was a week with many remem- brances to cherish, and one I will never forget. Girls’ State held at Huntingdon College proved to be an extremely hectic and fulfilling week of activity. Along with numerous speeches by such influential politicians as Jere Beasley, Bill Baxley, and Joe McCorquodale, there was a dinner honoring women in government with speakers Melba Till Allen, Agnest Baggett, and Juanita McDaniel, a coke party given by Dr. Jackson of Huntingdon with entertainment by the FFA Spring Band Winners, a tour of the archives build- ing, a talent night with each girl participating, a coffee held at the Governor’s Mansion, a tour of the State Capitol, an address by Governor Wallace, and finally graduation with a reception following. 18 Jeff Davis by Girl and Boy Siaters Jeff Hanson Governor Wallace addressed the entire group on Thursday. As is customary, the boys were divided into cities for compe- titive purposes. Jeff Hanson earned the title Most Physically Fit in his city. Everyone agreed that this was a great opportu- nity to learn about life, and all the boys reported that the food was fabulous, and it provided a chance to become acquainted with a number of new friends. Boys’ State was held on the campus of Jacksonville State University this year, and LHS had three representatives, Joey Joiner, Jeff Davis, and Jeff Hanson. Joey served on the News- paper Staff and reports that the experience was invaluable to him in his work on the Bear Beat. The group observed the Legislature in action, and then were given a chance to par- ticipate in the Legislative process. They were divided into two panics, the Federalists, and the Nationalists. Jeff Davis served in the Senate, and Jeff Hanson in the House. “CK v ■N y-' tl Joey Joiner Teresa Butler Earns Homecoming Crown Homecoming festivities began earlier this year, as home- coming was held in September. The floats were especially colorful and many of them had bicentennial themes. The winning float designed by the Seniors depicted Paul Revere’s ride. As is customary, contestants for queen were chosen from grades 9-12, and the campaign was by penny vote. The results are kept secret until halftime when the Queen is crowned. Teresa’s achievement was the second consecutive year her class had earned the homecoming title. The game was very pleasing to hometown fans, as the Bears emerged victorious. The Bears started off fast, but had some execution problems. Terry Alexander - Middle Guard The defense played an outstanding game, led by Ricky Bryan with 23 tackles. The team still had a few bugs to work out, and lost 20-0. LHS Pigs- kin Paraders were now back home to get on the winning track. Their victim in the Homecoming bout was Waynes- boro. The Bears won in a 49-12 romp. With a victory under their belts, the Bears now travelled to unbeaten Hat- ton. The LHS group kept within strik- ing distance the first half, and trailed by only 8 pts. But Hatton lit the score- board the 2nd half. The final score was Hatton 30 - LHS 8. Coach Brannon gives Rickey defensive instruc- tions. Ronald pulls a Wildcat out of the action. Mighty Golden Bears rush on for homecoming win. 25 Head Coach Toner looks on from sideline. Determined to turn things around, the next gridiron battle would take place on Clements’ home field. This proved to be the most exciting game of the season, culminating in a winning field goal from the toe of Terry Alexander in triple over- time. The final reading was 23-20. LHS now had a home game against T. M. Rogers. The Bears displayed superb defense limiting the Pirates to minus 11 yds. rushing. The offense was also on track as the Bears won 19-0. Ronald Shelion - Defensive Halfback Bears Joli Tim Hammond - Safety Rickey Phillips - Defensive End Springer turns up field against Brooks. Jeff Davis bulls his way for a first down against Clements. 26 Wildcats in Homecoming Victory Trying to make in 3-in-a row the Mighty Team attempted to spoil Lor- etto's homecoming, but lost a heart- breaker in very cold windy weather 6- 0. LHS was now to take the field against the eventual State Champs Town Creek. The Golden Bears fought hard, but were plainly beaten by a better club 16-32. Randy Hum - Defensive Halfback Rickey Bryan - Middle Linebacker The final home game was against W. Limestone. The Seniors savored a 33-3 victory. Wilson was now the last game via postponement due to the rain. The Weather cooperated no better this time as rain drenched everything. Nevertheless, the Bears left the swamped gridiron winners for the last time during the 75 sea- son with a 34-0 triumph. This gave the Golden Bears a 5-5 breakeven season. Brent lets fly with TD pass against Clements. Alex smothered by host of Brooks defenders. Under the guidance of Coach J. T. Weeks, the batsmen from Lexington were ready to embark upon a season that was to lead them to the State Playoffs. Jeff legs out an infield hit. CATCHER: Ricky Bryan PITCHERS: Brent Smith, Butch Danley, Ricky Putman. David Tate, Keith McGuire. 44 for Fourth Consecutive Year The Bears had their usual slow start trying to give everyone a chance to play and narrow down the starting lineups. The LHS sluggers lost a double header to Hatton, losing by one run in each game. The Golden Bears then split a pair with Brooks to get into the win column. Now it was Lexington’s turn to sweep as they took two from Colbert County while Ricky Putman came within one out of a no hitter. Stiff competition came next in the person of Mars Hill. The Bears battled to a 5-1 loss with Ricky Bryan accounting for the only score with a home run. The LHS bats were now running hot as they entered the sectional playoffs. In due course the Bears did away with LCHS, and was ready for Brooks. The Lions, however, were not ready for the free wheeling sticks the Golden Bears commanded. After falling behind for nine runs during the first two innings, Lexington rallied back for a 23-11 romp. The sluggers put together its best played game to win the championship against Hatton to the tune of 6-1. 45 INFIELD: Doug C. Jones, Tim Hammond, Terry Oliver. Mickey Thompson. Golden Bears Make Second The next victim in line was Tanner. The potent bats of Lexington were stiffled for the first two innings as they fell behind by five runs. The bottom of the order started things off in the third, while Terry Oliver has the homerun blow that put the Bears in the lead to stay. The Golden glovesmen from Lexington then defeated Tanner on their home field for a birth in the state play- offs. We then won a tune up game with Brooks allowing everyone to get in on the action. The Golden Bears would now do battle with Cherokee in the state, on Lexington’s home field. The bears were now undefeated in tournament play, but their luck was to change almost as bad as the weather. The rain came down and the temperature dropped, but the game went on. The batsmen’s clubs were as cool as the weather and could muster only one run. The Indians got two early runs, one unearned, and made them stick as Lexington’s season ended in a 2-1 defeat. 46 OUTFIELD: Jerry Smith, Kenneth Shelton, Butch Danley, Jeff Brannon. Jeff Davis. Kenneth Nafe. Appearance in State Playoffs Coach Weeks dishes out Instructions and observes the results. Tim gets taken on a high hard one. Bryan raps one. vnpt’rii' m Doug brings home the only score against Cher- okee. Ricky fires a fast one. Mickey charges a high bouncing grounder. This was one of the most profitable seasons at Lexington. Besides going to state, the Golden Bears banged out 13 home runs. Ricky Bryan (5), Terry Oli- ver (4), Ricky Putman (2), Jeff Brannon (1), and Jerry Smith (1). Freshman Ricky Putman did an excellent job taking up the slack at pitching when Ronald Shelton was injured in an acci- dent. Also Doug Jones, Ronald Shel- ton, Jeff Brannon, Terry Oliver, Ricky Bryan, and Tim Hammond were cho- sen to play in the first annual East- West Lauderdale County All Star game. Ricky Bryan, Terry Oliver, and Tim Hammond were then selected as East- West All Stars, and played in the game at Sheffield. Coach Weeks was selected to coach the Lauderdale County All Stan, and assist in the East-West All Star game. In his fourth season as head baseball mentor Coach Weeks collected his fourth sectional championship, his second area championship, and it was his second appearance in the state playoffs, as he guided his team to a commendable 9-5 season. A special thanks goes to Mr. Vernon Porter for allowing us to use his home so many times this year. We are deeply indebted to Jason Hammond for designing our Bicentennial cover. This being the year of our Nation’s 200th birthday, our staff strived to create a patriotic edition. We hope we have succeeded in this endeavor, and while doing so have created an interesting year- book. We would also like to thank Mrs. Betty Johnson, our Advisor, for all the time she has put into seeing that deadlines were met and that our book was completed on time. We sincerely hope we have accurately recorded the facts and events of the year and that this can in some way bring back some of the memories of the 75-76 year. 182 Bear Boosters ruyy t c rxJ 4-esis esu jz-eL i s a y )Tn -y£zr rrC J y a, fae s- A y- C -U yL,tZj (Z m y 6c 0 d a ; Jr v I (fWr t s- Ci CL p.
