a? THE BEARER Volume XXV 1968 Lexington High School Lexington, Alabama Foreword This is the 25th year of Bearer publication. To this observance of our Silver Anniversary we add a touch of celebration. The Crest on the cover of this 1968 Bearer is a symbol of 25 years of Bearer achievement. 5 “ALMA MATER’ n 11 On our city’s western border Reared against the sky Proudly stands our Alma Mater As the years roll by. 1 “Forward ever” be our watchword; Conquer and prevail. Sports involve most of the students either as specta- tors or participants. In competition our teams dis- play hard work while trying to reach auspicious goals. In P. E. each person is given a chance to show individual initiative by working toward the goal of physical fitness, which is so important to Americans today. mini • lrJiui tnmirs sunivi -iui jrs auo School spirit is further exemplified by the colorful display of the band, which also provides a dramatic and emotional impact on its listeners. The Annual Staff has worked untiringly to produce this 25th volume of the Bearer. We hope you will find enjoyment among the pages of this Silver Anniversary edition. Administration Our principal, Mr. O. W. White, has a multi- plicity of duties, but he is somewhat unique because he finds time to do little things which might appear to some as insignificant. How- ever, it is a mark of his character to be a per- sonal friend to each student, as well as having a personal interest in the appearance of our campus. Behind the scenes of everyday school life, these three people keep our school running. Mr. White, Mrs. Williams, and Mr. McMeans are caught in the daily chore of accounting for school funds. Vice-Principal, Raymond McMeans, or coach as students affectionately call him, serves as assistant to Mr. White and arranges class schedules. He also serves as Head Football Coach and helps instruct boy's P. E. The school secretary, Mrs. Alma Williams, is respected and loved by both students and faculty. Always willing to assist with a ready smile, Mrs. Williams is one of the finest points of Lexington. ALVIS, BARBARA B.S.; Vocational Home Economics Sponsor: GSO, FHA BAILEY, WILLIE MAE B. S. , M. GRADUATION AND FAREWELLS As graduation draws near and farewells are said, We think back over the good times we've had. We remember times when we discouragingly said, We'll never pull through these days of dread. But looking back over good times and sad, We realize that school wasn’t so bad. It's now time to bid our friends adieu And hope our friendships we can renew. Now we leave this ole school And face a life that is so new. Our goals are set and on we march With a place for LHS in our hearts. Boys are given an opportunity to help restore anti- quated automobiles by doing motor work, brake work, and general body work. This provides an ex- cellent chance for some to even learn to repair their own automobiles. Mr. Hankins is caught in one of his rare moments in the shop assisting Lawton with the tiller. The L Club is the school organization for recognition of boys who receive a school letter for participation in one of the major sports. While the major work of this club is to im- prove athletics and promote school spirit, one of the special projects this year was the promotion of the faculty-student basketball garpe. Outstanding Bandsman 1967 DWIGHT TAYS The sounds of music that came from the 1967-68 band were indeed better than ever before, as the band scored an excellent rating at State Contest. Sporting new uni- forms and equipment the band marched at football games, performed precision drills, and marched in parades to the tunes of Down Town, Bill Bailey, and many others. Under the direction of Harold Cooper, this organization has grown in size and in relation to the music they play. Selling candy, tickets and Stanley products, the band earned enough money for a trip to Memphis to march in the Cotton Carnival parade, but to their disappoint- ment this parade was postponed. Outstanding Bandsman 1968 LINDA HAYES A rummage sale, auction and spaghetti sup per were among the many activities of this organization. The annual band banquet was a success, as band members and their dates had enter- tainment and a delicious meal prepared by the mothers. NHS Provides Honor Roll Grades Eight Through Twelve As time draws closer the tension rises. I wonder if I made it? , is the question in the minds of many Juniors and Seniors. It's induction time for the National Honor Society. The theme for the induction was Great Americans . It centered around four great Americans, portraying their characteristics of leadership, character, service, and scholarship. A tea in the library for new members and their parents followed the induction service. A Christmas party and a spring picnic were among the recreational activities of the club. This year for the first time the NHS furnished an honor roll for grades Eight through Twelve.
