In March 1776, Robert Mossis,VPenn- sylvania's member of the Marine Committee of the Continental Con- gress, stated that a Maryland armed brig now is Philadelphia and urged the members to consider buying immediately and send her,toVfight. Her name was changed to LEXING- TON and she was immediately turned over to Wharton and Humphrey, Phil- adelphia Ship Builders, for fitting out. LEXINGTON ,measured 86 feet between perpendiculars and 24 feet, 6 inches in breadth. She was armed with fourteen 4-pounders, two 6- pounders, and twelve swivels. She had a complement of 84 men. Captain John Barry was appointed to her command. She captured 18 British vessels before being captured herself off U-Shant, France in 1777. The Second LEXINGTON, 'sloop-of- war, was built by the New York Navy Yard, having been authorized -by Act of Congress, approved,3,March .1825. She was launched 9 March 1826 and completed at a cost of S1l2,l28, She wasclassed as an 1,8-gun ,sloop-of-war and had alength of 127 feet, breadth, 33 feet, 9 inches, tonnage, 691, .and a complement of 190, officersand men. Sheywaslarmed with twenty-four medium 24-pounders when first com- missioned. On May 19, 1827, she was .sent to the Mediterranean where she cruised for three years. During the War with Mexico C1846- l848J LEXINGTON, under the com- mand of Lieutenant Theodorus ,Bai- ley, operated along the coast of Cali- fornia transporting troops for the U.S. Army and assisting in the blockade of Mexican ships in California ports. She sailed again from New York on June 18, 1853 under the command of Lieutenant John J. Glasson. After joining Commodore Matthew C. Per- ryis famous expedition to Japan, LEXINGTON remained in Far East- ern waters for two years and then returned to New York City where she was decomissioned February 26, 1855 and subsequently disposed of by sale. USS LEXINGTON - 1826 ' The third LEXINGTON was built as a side-wheel steamer at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1860, for freight and passenger service between that city and New Orleans, Louisiana. She was purchased for the War Department by Commodore John Rodgers at Cincin- nati, Ohio, for 320,666.66 during June 1861. She was converted to a gunboat by raising perpendicular oak bulwarks around her sides for defense against musketry, dropping the boilers into holds and placing the steam pipes as low as possible. LEXINGTON had an overall length of 177 feet, 7 inches, tonnage, 448, and a maximum speed of 7 knots. She was armed with four 8-inch smooth- bores and two 32-pounders of 43 cen- terweight. The gunboat joined the Western Flo- tilla at Cairo, Illinois, August 12, 1861. She was decommissioned in Mound City, Illinois July 2, 1865. USS LEXINGTON 1860 1325 5 naw- , The fourth LEXINGTON was an air- craft carrier built by the Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation of Quincy, Massachusetts. Originally assigned the name CONSTITUTION, the name was changed to LEXINGTON December 10, 1917. Originally designed as a battle cruiser, her keel was laid January 8, 1921, but work was suspended because of the limita- tions of naval armament as stated in the Washington Treaty. On July 1, 1922 Congress authorized conversion of LEXINGTON to an aircraft car- rier. She was launched October 3, 1925 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Theodore Douglas Robinson, wife of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In the spring of every year during the 30's, LEXINGTON participated in Fleet exercises which lasted two weeks. In July 1937, LEXINGTON aircraft participated in the futile search for Amelia Earhart following her disap- pearance during a trans-Pacific flight. LEXINGTON had an overall length of 888 feetg extreme beam, 106 feet, mean draft, 24 feet, lk inchesg full load displacement of 41,000 tons, trial speed 34.24 knots, total complement, 2121 officers and men. She was armed with eight 8-inch .55 caliber breech- loading rifles, twelve 5-inch .25 cali- ber anti-aircraft guns and four 6- pounder saluting guns. She was com- missioned December 14, 1927 at Quincy, Massachusetts. Her keel was laid July 15, 1941. Assigned the name CABOT, the Secretary of the Navy approved the name LEXINGTON on June 16, 1942 in response to a request from shipyard workers at Bethlehem Steel, Fore River Yard. Ten thousand people turned out to see the new LEXINGTON slide down the ways in September 19425 she was built and launched 14 months, fully one year ahead of schedule. The carrier was commissioned five months later in South Boston Navy Yard, 1943. Dur- ing that spring, Air Group 16 came aboard while she operated in Chesa- peake Bay. In fact, the LEXINGTON flight deck handles everything from sophisticated A-6 to the tireless T-28 and she often does from six in the morning to midnight without a break in stride. The next few I pages portray only a few of the myriad squadrons that come to qualify onboard this venerable ship. We do our job extraordinarily well considering the LADY is approaching her 30th birthday, she's the world's oldest aircraft carrier and she is manned by only a portion of her intended crew. For the 1400 offi- cers and men this job of carrier qualifications has become a familiar routine that is accomplished with uncommon pride and determination that reflects our youth 7 116 , y gf g, kfff VT-4 un- 118 Y fa ti 'Z If V 21 V x, ' lf y V al. gf 1 I E i i I 5 1 5 E El V 119 ,fa ,955 w ,...,e1,i.4Zn,1-ff-wr Mr, ,V ,..g.4,...,,,,R. ,,4,,,,k ' ,.,,,L,.,J,.. l,,,,k,,-., 1 A .T,,,.
