WATTS, Jr., set a precedent by being the tirst Marine Fighter Squadron flying F8U-2 Crusaders to deploy on a carrier for a Westpac cruise. The mission ot the VMF-323 Deathrattlers is to provide support of the Fleet Marine Forces and Naval Forces by the destruction of airborne enemy aircraft and missiles, and attack of surface targets.
