The duties of lst Division are many and varied, but all involving traditional skills of seamanship. Mooring, anchoring, replenishing, manning the 5 in. guns, standing Watch at the helm or as Boatswain Mate of the Watch-all this knowledge must be acquired by the man who wants to succeed in a deck division. lst Division claims some of the saltiest sailors on the ship, and this is as it should be. There is nothing that typifies the Navy more than the Boatswain Mate and the tools of his trade.
