COIICGTTS. CREWMAN OF the Admiral,s barge stands stiffly with boat hook at salute. Admiral uses barge for official calls. On June 28, 1956, Rear Admiral VVilliam L. Erdmann, Commander of Carrier Division One, and the officers and men who make up his staff came aboard the Lex for the second time, this time to stay all throughout the Far East deployment. Nineteen officers and 53 enlisted men make up the staff for an organization that commands two other carriers beside the Lex. Most of the enlisted men fill administrative billets because of the immense amount of paper work connected with the job. X2 CARDIV ONE band rehearses on hangar deck, much to pleasure of men working there. Band played several THE FLAG FLIES HIGH By way of proving exactly how much paperwork is involved, the men in the Flag Office had a cake baked to celebrate the one millionth sheet of mimeograph paper that they had run off over a period of a month and a half. Early in the cruise Admiral Erdmann assumed command of Task Force 77 5 at various times it included such other carriers as the WASP, ESSEX, YORKTOWN, and BON HOMME RICHARD. COLD LOOK on leader's face is directed to trombone man who just hit a clinker. IN FLAG plot, main headquarters for the staff's strategic planning for operations, two Commanders view overall situation.
