K. J Ar s Debate, Speech Show Excellence In 1979, the name Lewisville was never men- tioned on the Dallas speech and debate circuit. Now, five years later, Lewisville has built a name for itself because of the achievements of the LHS speech and debate teams. These teams began with only a handful of students, but in the last four years, the activity has grown to include numerous varsity and novice debaters and speakers. Debate Coach Sally Squibb-Tate said that it has been a neat learning ex- perience for me to watch the program grow and develop into a successful, visible representation of LHS in the competitive world. Debate is a form of organized argumentation in which the debater must take a stand on an issue of current national or international significance. Each spring, a national committee selects the debate topic for the following school year, giving the debaters time to do ex- tensive research during the summer. In recent years, the topics have included foreign trade, education, consumer goods and arms sales. This year's topic is RESOLVED: that the United States should establish uniform rules governing the pro- cedure of all criminal courts in the nation. The Lewisville speech team has also grown rapidly within the past few years. Terri Illchen and Suzanne Prichard prepare a speech for their public speaking class. The class prepares students for speaking in front of large groups of people. Students participate in Original Oratory, consisting of a 10 minute memorized persuasive speech and Ex- temporous Speaking, in which the speaker has 30 minutes to prepare a seven minute memorized speech. In the spring, the speech and debate teams often at- tend the Texas Forensic Association State Tourna- ment as well as UIL State. At these tournaments, the speakers put all the knowledge of the previous year into one all-out effort. The speech and debate teams also participate in the Mock Trail competition. Each year, the Dallas Bar Foundation sends a court case to all the high schools in Texas. Each school must research the case and choose witnesses and lawyers in order to prepare for competi- tion. Novice debater Tammy West, participating in Mock Trial this year for the first time said, Mock Trial is very interesting because it teaches us how a real court trial works. It's a lot of hard work, but it's also fun. In fact, everyone who has ever participated in speech and debate can attest to its value as a fun and educational ex- perience. Debaters deal in thought and language, and as author Lawrence Durell once wrote, It is language that creates national character. - Jessica Goldstein. lf Debate 193
