I if ffi. olio 1958 Annual of Lew1ston H1gh School foreword VVe, the class of 1958, undoubtedly more than our predecessors, are venturing into an era of scientific prophecy. As witnesses to the incessant struggle for supremacy among the peoples of the world, we are able to realize that mere equality among men no longer seems to be our major goal. Foolishly we place our hopes for hu- man advancement only in material inventions. But never has there been, or never will there be a more beneficial guide for human behavior than a universal prayer. The cap we receive on our day of graduation sym- bolizes the mental and physical achievements of these past four years. But the starting point of our progress we have found to be in the humble recitation each day of The Morning Prayer. As our school tower reaches toward heaven, seem- ingly in search of knowledge of the future, we, too, seek to know what it will hold for us. But with faith in God's wisdom, like that with which we have been inspired at Lewiston High School, we can face the challenges of the future, bravely and unafraid. Terry S. Boulct. eg Club The purpose of the Key Club is to develop leadership in outstanding sophomore, junior, and senior boys by having them serve our school, community, state, and our nation. At the New England Convention in April, 1957, the Lewiston High School Key Club was named the best in New England. At the National Conven- tion in July, 1957, the Lewiston High School Key Club was named second best in the nation. Some projects of the Key Club included a Halloween Dance and Cure-Vandalism Campaign, Teachers Appreciation Day, an Orphans' Christmas Party, a Needy Basket Project, and they have given much to charitable drives. The Key Club was run very capably during the past year by president Lawrence Brown. Members must have completed three semesters of French with an average of 80 in all subjects and an average of 90 in French. The society meets twice a month and is under the capable supervision of Miss Laurianna Boucher. Members study and make reports on the different phases of the civilization of France and become acquainted with the country. They do research work in French thus becoming more familiar with the language and acquiring better speaking ability. Butler Club, was inaugurated into Lewiston High School in 1954. Its members, juniors and seniors having at least an 80 average, meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Its aims are To leam about the opportunities in teaching, to cultivate the qualities essential to a good teacher, to study the lives of great teachers, and to foster the development of student leadership? Each member of the club is given the opportunity to achieve these aims through active participation in the club's practice teaching program and in its services to the school and to the community. The Lewiston High School club has the distinction of having organized the first state-wide FTC Convention, which was held in Lewiston in 1957. This con- vention is to be taken over by a different FTC club each year. Oflicers this year were VVendy Hideout, president, Vicki YVaite, vice-president, Diane Robichaud, secretary, and Constance Small, treasurer. The object of the Forum is to enlighten its members on world affairs. Some of the programs during the year included instructions on the parliamentary procedure. Officers are elected twice a year. For the first semester, Brian Hodgkin served as president, Mickael Moskovis as vice-president, and Linda Steele as secretary. The second semester elections were held, and john Griffin became president, Douglas Tremblay, vice-president, and Joyce Tyler, secretary. Hodgkins, M. oscovis. 9 J mr ' Science Club The Science Club offers a great opportunity to those students interested in science to increase their knowledge of this subject through discussions, demonstrations, and trips. Among the most notable discussions were those on the Electron Gun, Astronomy, the component parts of the atom, atmospheric pressure, tropisms, and prehistoric animals. The club witnessed demonstrations of an electric fur- nace, Teka's wonderful coil, and the forces of gravity. Each year the Science Club sends representatives to the Regional Science Fair. This year the president, Edward Bailey, won first place among the entries in the Held of physics, and Jack Griffin, one of the leading members, took second place in the Held of biology. The Radio Club now wishes to buy a Ham receiver. Club members have the opportunity to obtain help in learning the basic theory required to receive an amateur license. Morse code practice sessions are held also. Meetings are held in the electricity room or at the home of a member. Murphy. ebating The first event of the year for the active debaters was the Bates League discus- sion tourney on December 6, 1956. Iack Griffin won the first place award in competition with eighty other contestants. He discussed the American foreign- aid problem. On December 7, Lewiston was well represented at the Bowdoin Forum by ivlary LeBlanc and Iack Griffin in the Senior division, and Helen O,Connor and james Boyd in the novice division. Both novice debaters placed first in their respective panels as they argued the question of the testing of nuclear weapons. The next three activities were practice tournaments on the American foreign- aid question in Winslow, january 4g Lewiston, February 8, and South Portland, February 22. At the University of Maine tournament on February 14-15 our teams were very successful. Helen O,Connor and Iames Boyd received certifi- cates of achievement for winning three out of four novice debates. Other win- ning colleagues were Patricia Madigan and Stephen Score fnovice divisioni, jack Griffin and Richard Levesque, and Mary LeBlanc and Rosalyn Cohen fsen- ior divisionj. Other events during the season were Student Congresses at Portland and Laconia, N. H. which are run in a way similar to the Congress of the United States. At the Portland Congress, Lewiston was again honored by having Helen O'Connor nominated for best speaker in the House of Representatives, Mary LeBlanc served as chairman of one of the committees. In the foremost activity of the year, the Bates League Debates, our squad used the experience gained throughout the year to prove their mettle. Only two teams, comprised of the four best debaters in school, compete in this Hnal con- test of the season. On March 28, Helen O,Connor and Richard Levesque de- feated the Portland negative team - Mary LeBlanc and jack Grifiin defeated Cheverus' affirmative team. Helen and jack were chosen as best speakers in their respective preliminary debates. Contest Speaking The contest speakers, under the direction of Miss Nellie Mae Lange, started their busy year with the Voice of Democracy contest, which was won by Richard Levesque. Bates College held an oral interpretation clinic on Ianuary 10. Taking part in technique demonstrations from Lewiston was Patricia Beliveau. On February 20, Mary LeBlanc won the American Legion contest. This con- sisted of original oratory and extemporaneous speaking on the Constitution of the United States. On March 20, Mary LeBlanc won the next round of the Legion contest, receiving the county trophy and district plaque. Mary then placed second in the state contest, winning 850. The annual YVashington Medal Contest was held March 27. Placing first in the girls' division was Celine Dumont, and in the boys' division, Richard Levesque. These two students represented Lewiston High in the VVestem Maine Spear Contest on Apdl 9. 'Basketball Ceam Coach Crowley's basketball squad proved to be a formidable foe to many top- rated teams this year. VVith a lack of height and a comparatively untried squad, the Blue Devils performed very well, proving that the spirit is the factor which counts. The record of 5 wins and 13 losses does not do justice to the team as the Blue Devils lost several games by a very small margin. Seniors who paced the way for the team this year are Bob Lahey, Larry Brown and Dan Murray. Outstanding underclassmen who showed fine ball-handling and shooting are Phil Chase, Michael Cox, Roland Nadeau, and Lionel Roderigue. The hoopsters received a boost after mid-year exams when two sophomores, john Doyle and Paul Fortin, joined the squad. Cross Countrg Ceam Last fall, for the first time in the history of Lewiston High School, Coach Nat Crowley organized and coached a cross country track team. The team had only one meet and was defeated by Phillips High School. The team Worked out in the area of woods around Martel Baseball Field. In years to come, it is the hope of all that this newly formed sport will be continued. Crack The new track coach at L.II.S. was Mr. Robert Provencher, a graduate of the University of Maine. The coach and his team enjoyed a successful season, even though they had to practice at the Bates Athletic Field, when it was available, because of the lack of facilities at the school. The Girls, Athletic Association ranks high on the extra-curricular activity list for girls. Any girl may become a member by simply paying a small amount for dues. This year the girls have taken part in basketball, softball, volleyball, and tennis. The Varsity basketball team, the Junior-Varsity, and the Sophomore teams did an outstanding job this year. The girls are chosen for the teams the previous year. A great deal of credit should be awarded to these girls for the time they spent practicing and the sportsmanship they have displayed throu hout the year. Those taking part in the sports are awarded numerals, letters, pentimts, and pins. Each year a senior is given a white sweater for the greatest amount of points ac- cumulated through the four years, and a trophy is given to the girl elected as Miss G.A.A.
