Through the media of pictures we have tried to sum up life at Lewiston High. We have attempted to give you your class, a very wonderful class, in yearbook form, in order that the memories you have shared with your fellow students may he preserved. It has been a pleasure to put out this yearbook in 1948, when such great strides have been taken to place Lewiston High School at the head of the schools of the State. We wish to thank especially, Miss Madeline Butler for her wise counsel and her kindly words for making this work such a pleasure. We also wish to thank Miss Margaret La- Montagne, Miss Muriel Dumont, and their staffs, for the work they contributed toward the success of this issue. If the contents of these pages will, in years to come, recall to you the memories of pleasant high school days, close friendships, and all that goes into making Lewiston High your Alma Mater in heart as well as in name, this Folio will have achieved its purpose. Claudette Gauvreau, Editor-in-Chief DEDHCATHUN . . . To Miss Mildred Lane, a sympa- thetic guide, thorough teacher and generous friend, whose service to us as class adviser has been of im- measurable benefit: We, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty-Eight, sincerely dedicate the Folio. It was placed there this year in memory of all Lewiston High School graduates who, during World War II, gave their lives for their country. It is a small but lasting tribute to those fifty-three alumni, who fought and died in order that they might preserve for us the ideals of democracy that this school has taught. - We should like to dedicate this page also to the memory of Vivian Moody, one of our classmates, who died during the summer of 1945. 'lFHlE BAND The band, under the direction of its new bandmaster, Mr. Dennis Kieley, made great advances during the 1947-48 season. Through his encouragement, the person' nel increased to seventy members, new instruments were purchased, new concert music stands were bought, and the uniforms were improved. Under Mr. Kieley's guidance a Band Boosteris Club, consisting of parents and friends, was organized in order to raise money for the benefit of the band. During the year the band made several public appearances, the most notable be- ing at the Inauguration Ceremonies of Mayor Gagne, and at the Annual Spring Con- cert on March 31. This latter event was proclaimed the most successful band concert in the history of our school band. Other highlights of the year were: attendance at the Festival Concert at South Portland, the Westerii Maine Festival at Brunswick, and the New England Festival held at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. It is with deep regret that Lewiston High School accepts the resignation of Mr. Kieley, but we are all most grateful to him for the excellent worlc that he did while here, and for the generous encouragement and guidance that he gave the members of our school band. x Q f 1 Firxt row! The first of the year's program included the preparation and participation in the Bowdoin Interscholastic Debating Forum, held December 6. The question under debate was that of federal funds for further regional developments similar to the TVA. John Gledhill and Myron Bell were our representatives. Next on the agenda was the Bates League question: that of compulsory arbi- tration of labor disputes in all basic industries. In preparation for this practice tour- naments were held, in which 23 students participated at Lewiston, and at South Portland. For the Bates League, underclassmen comprised the varsity team: John Gled- hill, Murray Bolduc, Myron Bell, and Roscoe Fales, with Richard Breault serving as manager. Don Ashton was assistant manager and Richard Goldman was alternate. The same teams represented the school in the National Forensic League Tournament held at Portland on April 17. Lewiston won both its debates in the preliminaries of the Bates League. The affirmative team defeated Edward Little negative team 2-1. The Cony High affirma- tive team was defeated by our negative team 3-0 with Myron Bell judged best speak- er. Thus, LHS was .eligible to enter the semi-finals. First row: Gledhill, M. LeClair, R. Bolduc, M. Bell. Second row: B. Hoffmann, L. Davis, M, Maguire, G. Shapiro, D. Ashton, R. Brcault. CCON'lF1ES'lF SPEAKING The Student Legislature, the first speaking event of the year, was held in Augusta at the State House on November 22 when john Gledhill was chosen chair- man of his committee. Richard Goldman, Jack Dion, Roscoe Fales, and Marjorie LeClair also participated. The first of a series of American Legion contests took place on March 3. Those participating delivered original orations based on the Constitution, and also spoke extemporaneously on one section of the Constitution. Medals were awarded to Myron Bell and Harmon Butler, who placed first and second respectively. Others partici- pating were Charles Steele, Roscoe Fales, Leona Davis, and Donald Ashton. On March 20 the National Forensic League New England Tournament was held in which Lewiston won three first prizes and two seconds from the six divisions. Those winning first honors were Ruane Butler, Marjorie Leclair, and John Gledhill. Second honors went to Murray Bolduc and Ruane Butler. The Washington Medal Contest was open to all students in school. Ruane But- ler was the winner of the girls' contest and Murray Bolduc the boys'. Charlotte Gel- inas, who came in second, received the medal, since Miss Butler had won it last year. John Gledhill and Karl Berlcelman tied for second place in the boys' contest. In the western division of the state-wide Spear Contest, Murray Bolduc placed first of eleven boys and Ruane Butler second of eleven girls, which made the former speaker eligible for the Spear Contest finals, with Miss Butler as alternate. The University of Maine Speaking Contest was held April 30. Ruane Butler received first place in serious reading in the preliminaries and fourth in the finals. Others taking part were Marjorie Leclair, Myron Bell, and Roscoe Fales. First row! C. Fales, M. Giroux, D. Goldman, C. Gauvreau, B. Hill, R. Provost. Second ww: N. SENIOR PLAY Dear Ruth, the Senior Play of the class of 1948, proved to be a hit with young and old alike from lights, places, actionn to the final curtain. The play's quick pace and smooth production can be attributed to the capable direction of Miss Eleanor McCue. It is an episode never to be forgotten by all who participated in it. Props com- mittees bustling back and forth, the stage committee planning the decoration and ar- ranging the furniture, a special group at work making artificial Howers, and the actors dramatically running over their lines for the last time. The play revolves around the family of judge Wilkiiis, his wife and two daugh- ters. Miriani, of high school age, corresponds with a soldier overseas and signs her sister Ruthis name to the letters. Wlien the soldier returns, expecting to find Ruth waiting for him, complication upon complication arises, and the laughs are hearty and numerous. The cast included: Beverly Hill, Irenee Girardin, Margaret Giroux, jack Dion, Claudette Gauvreau, Richard Goldman, Rita Provost, jack Desjardins, Constance Fales, and Noel Poulin. The entire production was conducted on a work and play basis. A busy and happy atmosphere prevailed and before anyone knew exactly how it all happened, the Senior Play joined our list of memories. The activities of the past year were numerous including functions of both a social and service nature. The first meeting of the year was in the form of a get- acquainted dance. Later in the year a sleigh ride was sponsored by the group, and also a Hobo Hop for the benefit of the World Youth Fund. The club also cele- brated an athletic month and a religious month. During the latter, visits were made to several local churches of different denominations, and a brief study was made of the major faiths, as a background for greater religious tolerance. The principal spealcers at meetings during the year included: Father John Bowers of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Michael Buccigross, and Frank Cooper. KEY CLUB The Kiwanis Key Club made up of twenty-one male students of Lewiston High School has been serving the school this past year as a service organization. The of- ficers who directed the club this year were Kenneth Foisy, president, James Park, secretary, and Stanley Norbert, treasurer. Principal Linwood Kelley served as adviser. The members have acquainted themselves with the purpose and function of the large organization by occasionally attending the regular Kiwanis luncheon meetings. Membership to the club is limited and admittance is subject to the vote of Jun- ior Kiwanians. The young men are chosen on the basis of leadership, personality, and character. if + if KCHORAL GROUP Under the able direction of Mr. Alexis Cote, the choral group has been doing splendid work for the four years of its existence. This year one-hfth credit was granted to the students for this work. Previous to this the group was regarded as an extra-curricular activity. Approximately 175 students gave up one study period every Wednesday and one afternoon or evening a week in order to study the fundamentals of music, as well as to learn many choral selections. This year an operetta consisting of 12 members in the cast and two mixed chor- uses, one of forty voices and the other of twenty voices, was presented in April. As a climax to the year's program of study the entire group was heard at graduation exercises. PUBMICATJIUNS .ang -Q 9 ddoooov f. fx a V S -.B aff' Y ,594 A - A .X 1. vf' Q f -- I 1 ' - Nw. We are grateful that we had the opportunity to share in the thrill and excitement of those glowing autumn days, and witness the display of true sportsmanship which won this team state-wide acclaim. The class of 1948 offers its congratulations and thanks to you who earned this honor for us, and who thus have contributed to the list of memories that will linger long with every one of us graduates. ASSISTANT CCUAKCHIES Mr. Shapiro Mr. Buckley Mr. Dickson paw CHAMPS 31947 FOOTBALL SEASUN The Fall of 1947 witnessed perhaps one of the best football teams in the athletic history of Lewiston High School. With such outstanding athletes as Ken Foisy, Dave Harkins, Paul Cote, Fred Lebel, Jim Parks, Jim Bernard, and Ralph Precopio, the Blue Devils romped over their first five opponents scoring 165 points while holding the opposition scoreless. On one sunny Saturday afternoon in aOctober Portland's powerful team came to Lewiston. The game was rough, the players worked hard, but our better team emerged the victor. The Devils scored first, but the visitors came back and scored in the second period and found Lewiston with but a one-point advantage at half- time. A safety in the third period gave Portland a temporary one-point lead as Ken Foisy raced round the end and over the goal in the last period to win the game and also clinch the mythical state title. The season, however, was not yet over. After a game with Cony had been can- celled because of the critical forest fire threat, an aggressive squad came up to Maine from Quincy, Massachusetts. In a rugged battle at Garcelon Field, the Bay Staters were first to tally after a scoreless first half, and took a 6 to 0 lead. Again it was Ken Foisy who saved the day. With the ever-present help of his team mates, Foisy crashed over from the one-foot line on fourth down to put Lewiston back in the game. On the next play, Foisy successfully converted for the extra point and the Devils won the game by this slim margin. The Armistice Day game found an injured Devil aggregation subduing Ed- ward Little 21 to 6 in a slow game. The win completed an undefeated and untied season, the first in several years, and Lewiston was acclaimed State Champions of the 1947 Schoolboy Football Season. We would like to pause here to extend praise to the assistant coaches and to Coach Mose Nanigian above all for his outstanding coaching and congratulate him on being named Maine's Number One high school football coach of the year! When Ken Foisy and Jim Bernard were lost to the squad, the basketball hopes took a decided slump. Well coached by Mr. Dickson, the team improved rapidly as the season progressed, and showed bright prospects for next year. The first two games of the season were won defeating Livermore Falls 52-Z8 and Farmington 49-29. With the exception of these games, and two wins over Brunswick, the team lost its games. Perhaps the best game of the season was their loss to Chev- erus 29-35 in which the Blue Devils nearly upset the team that later went on to win the State Championship. In the Twin City series, Edward Little captured both games but not without the usual hard fight. The first game saw E. L. winning 43-37. In the second, Lewiston put a scare into the tournament hopes of the Eddies by leading all the way until the final two minutes of the game. The Red Ghosts caught fire and pulled out vic- torious 43-31. Ronnie Lagueux, co-captain, and Ray Sirois were the spark-plugs of the club, with Jim Cosgrove, co-captain, and Dave Anderson having their bright moments. The only senior on the squad was Jim Cosgrove, so the season ahead looks good for the Dickson-coached boys. , , 5 X21-. 1. uf x Q A Q 1 1 fi- ,gf S , Vg I ' K, ,A4,':-., SL A , + '. Practices were held every Tuesday for the Freshmen and Sophomores and every Friday for Juniors and Seniors. Practice games took up the schedule for the first half of the yearg later the tournament games were held. These were very exciting with the Juniors and Seniors ending in a tie, as they were unable to hold a play-off. Students in classes other than those participating in games handled the refereeing. The season came to a successful close at the end of April. RIDING Something new was added to girls' sports this year -horseback riding. The art of riding was taught to all those who wanted to learn. A point show was held in Westbrook in the fall and weekly rides were enjoyed at a local stable. Trail riding was the greatest attraction to the girls. Classes were held in the fall and spring. I' MODERN DANCING Under the direction of Miss Doryce Arndt, Modern Dancing was brought back this year to the list of girls' sports at Lewiston High. A club was formed with Doris McGraw serving as president. Weekly meetings were held at the Armory. The purpose of the club was to attain grace and poise, and membership was open to girls of all four classes. BOWLING Girls' sports would never be complete without bowling. A league was formed this year, and bowling parties were held weekly at a local bowling alley. This activity was open to the girls in all four classes, but there were only two Seniors who joined. Scores were kept at all sessions and at theend of the season the two highest teams played off for the championship. Doris Bisaillon was captain of the winning team which included: Lorraine Laliberte, Lorraine Pauze, and Doris Bouchard. 1 'ki' JRHDIINCI CLUB First row: M. Murphy, D. McGraw, N. Goldstein, C. HOCKEY Under the able tutelage of Mr. Gerald Cailler, the LHS hockey team of 1947-48 completed the season with a record of five victories, five defeats, two ties and a forfeit. Losing to only two high school teams, St. Dom's and Gardiner, Lewiston dropped two games to Bridgton Academy and forfeited a game to Morse High, when it was found that two ineligihles were in the lineup. Victories were compiled over Coburn Classical twice, Kents Hill, Morse, and the LHS alumni. The two ties were registered with Kents Hill and Gardiner. WINTXER SPURTS The Winter Sports team led by Mr. John Aliberti, newcomer to the Lewiston High faculty, compiled a fairly successful record during its 1947-48 season. In the first meet, the winter edition of the Blue Devils placed second in competition with the Bowdoin and Bates J.V.'s. In our annual Carnival, which was presided over by Queen Claire Lebel, the team finished fourth in a field of seven. The biggest improvement shown was in the State Meet at Gould where the Devils finished fifth in a field of the State's top eleven teams. Lost to the team this year through graduation will be Edward Brush- wein, Stuart Danforth, Daniel O'Neil, Everett Fournier, James Campbell and James Bernard. First row: R. Royer, Sacco. R. Labbe, D. Miclon, Mr. Aliberti. v 1 TRACK Lewiston's track season actually opened on March 22 when a meet with some thirty New England schoolboy teams was held at the Bowdoin Cage. It was a small Devil squad that made the trip with but one week of practice behind them. Paul Cote placed third in the 40 yard dash and in the broad jump while Ken Foisy grabbed a fourth in the shot put, thus giving Lewiston a tie for sixth place with New- ton and Cambridge Latin. While several trackmen, members of the senior class were on the Washington trip, the Devils dropped a triangular meet with the Bow- doin Frosh and Deering High. Lagueux was the top scorer for the LHS squad. 7 Ir wasn't until May sixth that the Lewiston track team was able to get rolling, and then really started off in high gear by downing the Bates Freshmen 66 to 42. The speedy running of Fred Lebel and Cote was missed in the dashes, but the Devils made up for it in the other events. It was jim Bernard who starred as he took firsts in the javelin and low hurdles, a tie for first in the high jump, and second in the discus, broad jump, and high hurdles. Foisy took first in the shot put and discus and a third in the 100 yard dash. Ron Lagueux won the 440 and 220 yard runs and placed second in the 100. Dom Gagne and Omer Miclon took firsts in the mile and broad jump, respectively. Bernard, Foisy, and Lagueux's combined total of 47 points was enough to keep the Bobkittens in their cage. As this is being written, the State meet of june 5th looms questionable as far as Lewiston is concerned. Seniors Cote, Bernard, and Foisy will probably be missing due to important college exams, and from here, the meet looks to hold little interest for Devil followers. If the necessary arrangements can be made, the Blue-and-White track squad would be the team to beat for the state title. First row: D. Lonergan, T. Case, T, Hatgis, R. Hunter, R. Breen, R. Ritker. The Devil Nine got off to a fast start by chalking up two league wins before being downed by a powerful Rum- ford club, but came back to shellack Brunswick to hold their second berth. The first game of the season found the LHS pastimers rallying late to defeat St. Dominics by a 6-5 count. Ron Lagueux went the eight-inning distance giving up eight hits to the scrappy Doms. Morse High of Bath was the next victim as the Devils downed the Shipbuilders 7-2 on the six hit pitching of Paul Clifford who went seven frames. Lagueux set down the losers with no hits in the remaining two stanzas to keep Lew- iston's record clean. It was up at Rumford on May fourth that the Nanigian- tutored aggregation met the test, and failed to pass. The present league-leading Panthers of Rumford toppled the Devil nine by a 15-5 score. The winners col- lected nine hits off Ron Lagueux in the flrst four innings, two hits off Dick Main- ente in one and one-third innings, and another five hits off Clifford who finished out the game. Back in the win column, Clifford tossed a three-hit shutout against Bruns- wick at the Bates field in a 14-0 lopsided rout by the better-hitting LHS nine. The overall picture looks as if the Devils are going to have a good season, sweep the City Series, and take a positive second place in the Andy Valley League. It will be possible for Lewiston to tie for first place if they can beat out the Panthers in the return match, and with a little luck, might possibly find themselves on top at the end of the season. The Senior Class of 1948, renowned for its learning, its intellectual charm, and its scholarly attainments, gives and bequeaths to the Junior Class its record, as an incentive for higher achievement next year. 2. Be it known also that the said Senior Class gives and bequeaths to its successors the seats and desks of Room 109, with the hope that they may occupy them with as great dignity and reverence as the past Senior Class has been wont to do. 3. In due consideration of the Class of 1949, we bequeath to them a State Champion- ship football team, renowned for itsability to win. 4. We generously donate the College Entrance Examinations to the future Senior Class, in hopes that they will find them as simple as the Class of 1948 thought they would be. 5. To those students taking Problems of Democracy, we bequeath the task of writing the United States Constitution. 6. Be it known also that the Junior Class will inherit the ability to pass American History Examinations, Shorthand 60's, and the Standard Examinations of John Milton's Minor Works. 8. The Senior Editors of The Folion and The Booster bequeath their writing talent to the new members of the yearbook and newspaper staffs. 9. The Senior Play cast and committees bestow upon their benefactors the ability to present as successful a dramatic production as Dear Ruth. 10. Be it known also that we bequeath our personalities, those witty conversations and airs of savoir faire that have carried us so successfully through four years at Lewiston High School. The members of the Class of 1948 will and bequeath to the undergraduates of the school the wonderful traditions which they have learned to understand and revere during their high school years. The ,Class of 1948 likewise bequeaths to the Principal and to the members of the faculty, a report of the rising vote of thanks as a mark of appreciation and indebtedness for all they have labored and done for the aforesaid mentioned. In testimony whereof, We hereunto set our hand and seal, and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament, this eighteenth day of June in the year of Our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-Eight. Proprietor: Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, it's foggy all the time in here. What can I do for you, sir? Customer: Oh no, it can't be, but it isl Don Ashton, you old buzzard, how are you? D: Why, Babe Cosgrove, it's been so long, I didn't recognize you at first. It's great to see you. How's the gang? I hear you are quite the family man now. B: The life of a politician suits me fine, and my six children are pure devils, but you should see the family of Bev Hill and Gloria Nuzzo. They are the two most active members of the Married Women's Society of America now. D: Docs Gloria still have that blitz-buggy of hers? B: Yes, she, Chubby -lalbert fremember him?l, and Gilbert Lane had a three-car smash up a few weeks ago. D: That's to be expected, I suppose. Tell me more, what else do you know? B: Do you remember how Mildred Keene always wanted to be a dentist? Well, she repairs all the bridge work in her swanky office in Lewiston's newest skyscraper. Thatys the one Jack Desjardins and ,lean Paul Dulac designed and built. Our classmates surely made good. Tell me, have you heard about any others of them? D: Yes, I have. I read the other day that Nancy Reade was appointed head brain surgeon at johns Hopkins. I can remember when she was my sixth period mail man. June Berman is in Chicago now-she won the contest for Miss Great Lakes of 1958, you know. B: Speaking of beauties, I saw somewhere that Claire Lebelis latest motion picture was a wonder. She and Jack Dion really hit Hollywood hard. D: Broadway got it, too. Remember the stars in our Senior Play? They tell me Claudette Gauvreau and Dick Goldman are colossal in Bob Murphy's musical Up Here Mabel. B: I imagine it's tops, but Dick is a physicist on the side. He and Louis Olehowski are working on a machine that will give every home lights at night without electricity. D: Our class produced a multitude of scientists. I hear that jim Bernard is president of the Atomic Research Committee at M.I.T. B: Remember Paul Cote? A severe old chap now, he's the champion story teller of the North American radio network. D: Yes, but Pam Weber is running him a close second somewhere, I'l1 bet, B: Have a cigarette? This is a package of that new brand Ed Brushwein is manufacturing. D: Thanks, I will. By the way, whatever became of john OINeil? B: Oh, he took over where Fred Astaire left off, and went over twice as big. Of course, Astaire never had a partner like Connie Roussin. Say, what are you doing tonight? D: Nothing important. What would you like to do? B: Ralph Precopio is touring America this year and heis in New York now. I could call the Bouffard Airlines, Inc., and I know George would Hy us over in that new jet job Noel Poulin designed for him. Carolyn Simpson is his chief pilot, and with another classmate, Bev Hoffmann, as a hostess - what more could you ask for? D: That sounds terrific, and tomorrow I'll do the honors. We can eat at the New York branch of Norm Labbe's Restaurants, Inc. Then we could see the Notre Dame- Army game and, of course, cheer on Dave Harkins' Irish. In the evening we can go to the Waldorf and listen to the best music in town - Norm Winslow's Numerous Wonders. His vocalist is Charlotte Malo, now. Did you know she studied at the Juilliard School, where Pauline Tardiff's the new dean? B: It's a deal, Don. Ir will be grand to see so many of our classmates again. just think of it - they are becoming famous all over the country. We should certainly thank LHS for turning out such ci successful group.
