Graduation time for the class of 1944 finds many of our classmates already taking part in a war to establish for this country and the world the su- premacy of American ideas and ideals .... It will be the responsi- bility of the boys and girls of today, who are the citizens of tomorrow, to work to maintain this democratic world for which they are now fighting .... Since the success of a democracy is dependent upon the education of each individual within it, our four years of high school training are vital in preparing us to take an intelligent part in our govern- ment, and in developing in us an appreciation of life in our free nation .... We have tried there- fore, to summarize and evaluate, through the pages of our year book, the contribution which Lewiston High School has made toward preparing to prosecute the war and to preserve the peace that will follow. John Kelley Editor-in-Chief To our class adviser, Mr. Ralph Gilbert, we wish to express appreciation for his constant interest and helpful quid- arice throughout our four years in high school. f fi Ll' l UMW ' iw t l wa K :va -,- ,,,.,, Q. g, .M ,ss .,., ,,,-., , ,. ,nf ff' J ff ill - W TABLE CCNTENTS Section Gne Administration Faculty Classes - Students - Section Two Forensics Publications A Clubs Dramatics Features s Section Three I Athletics Music A Advertisements M. LANGUAGES The study of languages helps us to develop a sympathetic compre- hension ot foreign peoples, and to absorb something of their culture. This knowledge tends to discourage international hatreds and suspicions and to replace them with universal peace and understanding. HISTORY History shows us the attempts which have been made to solve the political, economic, social, and cultural problems of the past, how trying to solve them has brought about the con- ditions which exist today, and how this knowledge can help us to meet the unknown problems which lie before us. HOME ECONOMICS Since the home is acknowledged as the foundation ot democracy, the high school fittingly otters future homemakers the opportunity to study the domestic arts and sciences. ln these days also it gives youth vital in- formation about nu- trition and conser- vation. MATHEMATICS Mathematics lays the foundation tor ad- vanced training to develop those tech- nic al skills which have become all important in War time and will remain important in securing and main- taining the peace. SCIENCE The study of biol- ogy, physics, and chemistry has shown us the relation of science to our every- day lives, and has given us a vision of what applied science may do tor the world of tomorrow. No field of study has helped more in enabling our armed forces to carry the war to our ene- mies. MANUAL ARTS To supply our country's need tor trained tradesrnen, particularly acute in these trying times, courses in manual arts offer boys an oppor- tunity to explore vari- ous types ot work, and to learn the basic skills for the trade ot their choice. COMMERCIAL The commercial courses train boys and girls in clerical skills, preparing them tor essential war jobs and tor positions in the normal business and industrial lite ot our nation. 1 ,A www MM.
