PIERRE MADELEINE GIGUERE ASSISTANT EDITOR ASSISTANT EDITOR JOSEPH MAHAN To our friend and adviser, MR. JOSEPH MAHAN, whose patience, tolerance. and understanding have been a molding force in our lives, we respectfully dedicate the 1943 Folio. We hear a lot about our freedoms these days, - hear a lot and think about them a great deal more too. Some- how or other, the threat of danger has made us more alive to those things in life which really county that something they call freedom has become more than a subject for posters and speeches, W an atmosphere essential to our every action. This has been the prevailing idea of our days in school - and this is the theme of our Folio. OVQLUOV' Like other pleasant things, our high school life must come to a close. It is hoped, however, that these pages will help keep alive the happy experiences of the past four years, preserving in memory those things which, in time, will become even more dear. To Mr. Rossiter Drake, our faculty adviser, to every member of the edi- torial staff, and to Superintendent Alden Woodworth, who contributed much in the preparation of this volume, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude. Clement Hiebert, Editor-in-Chief FACULTY STUDENTS FEATURES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISING 8 OVVL go YQGCZL These things shall be, - a loftier race Than ever the world hath known shall rise With flame of freedom in the souls And light of knowledge in their eyes. FACU LTY LINXYOUD j. KELLEY, Prinripzzl To the members of the vlass of 1943, I extend congratulations and best wishes. The unparalleled turmoil of today's world has already deprived you of many of your youthful privileges and forced you, too early in life, to bear your share of adult burdens. But thankful we are, that nothing can entirely crush your youthful ambition, courage, and hope. These will sustain you in grasping and solving the problems which will fall on your shoulders. May the reward of youth, at present faced with such tremen- dous tasks, be to live to enjoy the fulfillment of our dream of a world liv- ing at peace with a full realization and recognition of the brotherhood of man. In addition to the toll of life taken on the bloodstained battle fronts are those heroic soldiers without uniform who die unheralded on the home front in an effort to keep the armed forces well equipped. Raymond Guay, the first of our number to die, serving in this capacity, exemplifies the sense of patriotic l duty which encouraged his unselfish desire to aid his coun- try in time of great peril. The Booster was awarded second place in the annual Columbia Univer- sity Press Association Contest. This award, which is a better rating than usual, signifies that it is an above-average high school paper. During the course of the year The Booster carried as features personal interviews granted to the editors by Robert St. john, National Broadcast- ing Company war correspondent, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, first lady of the land, joseph E. Grew, former ambassador to japan, and Colonel Carlos Romulo, personal aide to General Douglas MacArthur and last man to escape Bataan. The various events and activities of the school calendar such as the scrap drive, senior play, winter carnival, senior minstrel, bond drive, etc., were competently covered and written by the news editors, Parker Hoy and Clement Hiebert, and their staff, while the social editor, Cecilia But- ler, kept us informed on all the social functions. Eugene Zelch, the sports editor, covered events in the athletic world. Well-written, clear-cut editorials by the editor-in-chief and her assist- ants, Ruth Libbey and Lois Brean, adorned our second page, followed by the different columns bearing such descriptive titles as Hi-School Shopper, Club Chatter, Hear Ye, In the Service, Brief Biographies, just Browsing, Susie Student Says, and Sports Review. Entertaining cartoons by Harry Larchian and excellent photographs by Eugene St. Pierre were included in all editions. Publications from other schools were available to the staff for inspection and comparison through the exchange editor, Catherine MacPhee. The make-up of the paper was in the able hands of John Kelley. The class wishes to extend its most sincere thanks to Mr. Rossiter Drake, who by his competent direction made this success possible and to Mr. Alfred Lessard, who is. responsible for the printing of the publication. i1'i23lE2i?-22 A 1 H Aiiiiiiwiffv, 1 Kmff-1S:H,.2 Uvxzr' h B er . The staff was divided into twelve teams, under the leadership of the following captains: Cecilia Butler, Laurianne Longchamps, Warren Sup- ovitz, Antionette Liarakos, joseph Conley, Alice Petroulis, Marion Mc- Kenney, Helen Cholewa, Catherine MacPhee, Mignonne LaRocque, Vir- ginia Ford, and Helen Beaumont. The staff captains were under the dir- ect supervision of the business manager, Ronaldo J. Roux. Miss Mariette Corriveau served as staff typist. Miss Beatrice Byrnes acted as faculty adviser. J The Debating Club has enjoyed an active year under the able guidance of Miss Nelliemae Lange. The programs at the bi-monthly meetings were highlighted this year by two extemporaneous speaking contests. Miss jean Snowe was the winner of oneg and Miss Mary Alice Colder, the other. Other educational programs were organized by the vice-president who act- ed as program chairman. In their lighter moments the club members enjoyed a supper hike to Thorncrag. Members of the Ueliating Club participated in two practice tourna- ments. The first was held at Lewiston, March 6, with four schools com- peting. Fourteen Lewiston deliaters participated, winning ten out of tw elx e debates. Only the Bates Freshmen had a better record. On April 3, eight Lewiston High students competing with seven other schools in a tourna- ment held at Bangor High School wcrn five decisions cut of eight: one de- bate Was won by default. -, . rize Qjbea ing Once again, the Lewiston speakers have defended their excellent record, and have emerged victorious from several events in prize speaking. The contest, which is held annually at the University of Maine, took place as usual, and four of our students came home with medals. Our only first-place winner was Clement Hiebert, who gained his laurels in .group discussion. Gordon Hiebert was awarded third honors in the same event. Other winners were Jean Snowe, who received second place in original ora- tory, and Cecilia Butler, who came in third in interpretative reading. Don4 na Golder also participated, entering the humorous reading division. Former triumphs were repeated when Lewiston came out on top in the National Forensic League Tournament, held at the high school. This victory was due to the splendid showing made by the following: Clement Hiebert, a double winner, who captured first place both in extemporaneous speaking and oratorical declamationg Jean Snowe, first in original oratoryg Cecilia Butler, second in dramatic and humorous readings, Gordon Hie- bert, third in oratorical declamationg and Mary Alice Golder, third in ex- temporaneous speaking. The debating section of the tournament was upheld by Lois Brean and Mary Alice Golder on the affirmative, and Emil Hahnel and Gordon Hie- bert on the negative. P sorsify Qehafing The 1942-43 varsity debaters achieved the best forensic record in re- cent LHS debating history. The Hiebert brothers, Gordon and Clement, represented us in the Bow- doin League December 12. Gordon received first place in his division while Clement was winning second place in his. The losing margin was very small for Lewiston ee but 1-3 of IUZ3 behind the cup winners, that is, 2 points out of 600. The proposition debated upon was: Resolved, That this house favors the principle of drafting men and women to meet not only military but also industrial and occupational wartime requirements. Gladys Friedler has acted as manager for the varsity team. In winning the Bates Tournament, April 16 and 17, Cecilia Butler. Clement Hiebert, Cordon Hiebert, and jean Snowe did not lose one judge's vote throughout the competition. All the LHS debaters were so excellent that each was named best speaker in one of the four preliminary debates. lean Snowe and Clement Hiebert won honorable mention as individual speakers in the finals. This is the second year in a row that Lewiston High has won the Bates Championship for the state of Maine. The question this year was: Resolved, That a world federal government should be estab- lished. This was the second time in four years that a Shanahan-coached eleven has won the title. The Devil gridmen opened the season by downing South Portland 12-0. We next entertained our twin city rivals from across the river and a 37-0 rout was the result. VVilton Academy, Vllaterville, Rumford, Cony, and Bangor all fell before the powerful Devil machine, with VVaterville giv- ing the strongest opposition. VVe traveled over to Auburn on Armistice Day and emerged with a 7-6 victory to complete the season. In these eight games, the Lewiston offense ran up a total of 190 points while our power- ful defense held the opposition to 26. The backfield of Gazoo Berube, Chick Leahey, Norm Parent, Paul County, and Roland Chalifoux was well balanced. Speed from Berube and Leahey, power from Parent and County, and the blocking of Chalifoux was outstanding. ' The line, with big Tom Lonergan at center, Roland Roy and Louis Barbalias as guards, Roland Levesque and Louis Palman at the tackle positions, and Bill Paradis and Art Vliilding on the ends, was feared by all opposition. A team is only as strong as its reserves and the follow- ing boys also won their letters: Roy Stevens, Michael Higgins, Stanley Hodson, Robert Maliar, Peter Moskovis, Romeo Mikalonis, Edward Con- ley, Roland Bellegarde, Fernand Ouellette, Roger Levesque, Lionel jacques, and Manager Roland Roberts. These, however, were the first tvyo games of the season against Deering and Cheverus respectively, and the Devils came back later on to whip both of them. The Shanahan hoopmen rang up double victories over Edward Little, Rumford, South Portland, Morse, and defeated Portland in their only meeting. A Captain Arnold W'ilson was the team's highest scorer and worked well with Bob County at the forward positions. VVilson also dropped more points through the hoop during the season than any man on the Edward Little team. The defense men were Chick Leahey, Slim Somerville, and Pete Moskovis and along with Roger Tardiff at center held the opposition in check while dropping in their share of baskets. For reserves Coach Shanahan had George Stone, Leonard VVilson, Cus- ter Brimigion, jerry Begert, Romeo Isabel, and Thomas Meneally. The only men lost by graduation are Leahey, Stone, and Arnold VVilson. Roland Roberts was the manager. Transportation difficulties made it impossible to hold a state tourna- ment this season, but the Blue Devils have every reason to be proud of their record and had, at the very least, a strong claim for the state title. , fa I L I I I I B.-XSKIi'I'BAl,I, R HU JR I 7 ewistun ewistrm ewistcmn ewislcm cvvistcm ewiston Ln-wistml Lewiston Lewistmm I I, I I .ewistun evviston .ewiston .ewist 1 un Alumni Deering fqIlt'Yk'I'Ll5 Iiclwzlrd Littlv Rlllnfurrl I'or'tIuncl Clwverus Rumford South Portlamc Horse- Iidwarcl Little' Horse' South IIOVIIZIIIKI gireslnman Ugusleffvaff The freshman basketball team under the supervision of Mr. john Buckley completed a season in which some great prospects were developed. Many of these boys will be playing with the varsity next season. Pinkey Crowley was the captain and is about the most promising of the group.
