The first atomic bomb was drop- ped, and we struck Lewiston Public School. ln September 1945, thirty-two smiling faces plus a few bashful ones entered Miss Medha ugh's first grade room. Of these thirty-two, sixteen are in the graduating class. They are Richard Groski, Anthony Speltz, Dale Mulholland, Eloise Simon, Thomas Conway, Rachel Nienow, Earl Lade- wig, Donna Henry, Patricia Kessler, Donna Mae Meyer, Suzanne Selvig, James Milde, John Litcher, John Konkel, John Felsch, and Eugene Thesing. Our biggest accomplish- ment in the first grade was acting out The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Upon reaching the second grade we were joined by Donald Barnewitz and we were sorry to lose Earl Ladewig. In this grade we had our first music class and first spelling lessons. One of our happiest memories from this grade was our Christmas party. The next stage in our educational career was the third grade. For the first time in our lives, our great class was separated. Half of us spent our year sharing the second grade room. During our third grade year, we were joined by Dorothy Pollema and Ronald Erdmann. In our fourth year, we were aga in united into one happy class under the guidance of i fMrs. Brungardt, one of our favorite teachers. It was during this year that Ronald Erd- mahn bade us farewell and Earl Ladewig rejoined us, along with Mary Kessler, Krys- tyna Staron and Nancy Stever. We spent many enjoyable hours listening to Mrs. Brun- gardt read us stories. The biggest memory of the year was the surprise birthday party we gave in Mrs, Brungardt's honor. Our most memorable classmate was Krystyna Sta- ron. She came to us with her family as a displaced person from Poland. Fifth grade was our year of terror. For instance, John Litcher hurried out the door one day and in the process knocked out one ofthe lower panes, which was never re- placed. This devilish class was quick to take advantage of the broken window, using it as a means of entering the room when the door was locked. No one joined us or left us this year. In the sixth grade we developed our artistic talents, drawing many pictures and posters under the able direction of Miss Engh. We also enjoyed seeing who could reach the top of the spelling chart. Don Gilsdorf and Shirley Golish joined us this year and John Roth left us. The next step on our ladder of school progress was the seventh grade. We really , ' '-:- , . Y .M 4 thought we were big now because we were in high school. However, we didn't ac- complish much during this year. During this year Bill Burns, Daniel Cordes, Beverly Lanz, Bill McCasland, Marguerite Renk, Sandra Senrick, Mary Siebenaler and Diana Wanek joined us. John Roth rejoined us and Ronald Konkel left us. The eighth grade was not much different from the seventh. However, Arlene Ziemer, Berneice Scholoegel, and Roger Rupprecht joined our clan. Susie Selvig left us. Upon reaching our freshman year, things really started to pop. Our grade grew in one big jump as we were joined by Vivian Clark, Geraldine Curry, Elrene Dahlke, Frances Duane, Carolyn Erbe, Doris Erdmann, Jean Erickson, Rita Erpelding, Phyllis Essmann, David Kleinbach, Evelyn Kramer, Shirley Vail, Bruce Volkman, Daryl Laiky, Harriet Larson, Mildred Matthees, Donald Matzke, Lawrence Matzke, Ralph Oldham, William Prigge, Gerald Rinn, and Murvin Thomas. Our first big class project was building the bonfire for Homecoming. We also received our greatest humiliation by being initiated by the sophomores. When we reached the tenth grade we promptly initiated the freshmen, forcing the boys to wear shorts and make-up while the girls wore a combination of Overalls, lamp- shades, men's long underwear, and washed, unset hair. Donna Duellman, Wayne Erd- mann, Ronald Erdmann, Nancy Holman, and Marilyn Koffel joined us. Lawrence Matzke and Gerald Rinn left. However, we welcomed Susie Selvig back again. The junior year brought many new things. Severalofour boys played on our cham- pionship football and basketball teams. ln the fall of the year, we presented our class play, A Date With Judy. Many of us took an active part in it. From shortly after Christmas until the nineteenth of May, we spent hours working on our Prom, which was held at The Oaks at Minnesota City. A Hawaiian theme was carried out. The Prom consisted of a banquet and a dance. During this year, Betty Schultz, Betty Bar- ber, and Bernadine Kanz left us. At last we have reached our final step in our high school career, our senior year Doris Meyer joined us last fall and helped us as we planned for our cla ss trip to New York and carried on many money raising projects. As we complete our high school education, we leave with the confidence that the years we have spent in Lewiston High School will afford us many hours of pleasant memories. lifkkn 'U Q 'W--...ima if-it fl--Y Ng! They were tied with Stewartville and St. Charles. The seniors contributed two players to the team--Fred Crossfield and Dean Selvig. The team was under the su- pervision of Coach Pete Polus, who did a wonderful job, A game that will long be remembered is the tourna- ment game against Lake City. Here the Cards played their most remarkable game of the season to beat Lake City in a thrilling upset by a score of 59 to 56. Although their effort was not quite enough for a cham pionship trophy, they did a wonderful job and added one more trophy to the LHS trophy case. The queen's attendants were Marilyn Prigge and Carol Wadewitz. Also in the queen's court is Eldon Bartsch. The victorious homecoming football game was climaxed by a dance in the gymnasium to the music of Jerry Gilbertson. iff f . fi, if 41-'iff 'hm The picture below, Garden of Friendship , was the theme for our prom held on May 21 in the school gym nasium. We danced to the music of Curt Peterson be- neath a canopy of stars. Under the guidance of Mr. Wantock, it was a very successful prom.
