Annals of The Class of 1957 The great day has finally come! After six years of squabbling and two years of mere co-existence in the an- nex Cnow torn down to provide space for the new addition and parking lotl, we are ready to enter high school. We're no longer Linntowners or ln- towners, Northwarders or Southward- ers, we are very grown-up freshmen- the class of 1957. Jim Riley is our president. We hold class meetings once a month to decide upon various issues. There are scholastic changes also. Some of us take the business or general course, others, the academic. What gruesome stories we have been hearing about certain hardhearted teachers. One teacher is reputed to eat her pupils alive, another is known to be deadly accurate with chalk era- sers. Algebra, English, and Latin prove to be the most difficult subjects- By spring we are somewhat settled, having taken part in various intra- murals and activities. The spring formal is a success. A very small minority of our class attends it. School ends for the summer. lt is fall again-we are Sopho- mores. Construction has started on the new section of the building. Dis- tracting clangs and bangs can be heard alm6st any time of the day. Our classes this year vary greatly. We probe more deeply into everything from Latin to bookkeeping. We even read Shakespeare and quote lines from his plays. Barb Beck is our president. Since our foresighted president is thinking of next year's Junior-Senior Banquet, the class meetings are de- voted to plans for fund raising. Sev- eral boys play varsity football. Joe Fenton letters. in the sport. We begin learning the animal families in bi- ology. Basketball season begins, sev- en fellows play junior-varsity. The annual Christmas Dance is held- After Christmas vacation we again buckle down, preparing for those awful se- mester tests. Spring arrives wet and soggy. Many of us play intramural softball. The class ring manufacturer comes. We choose our style, colors, and sizes. The last day of school we take a class trip to Rolling Green. Everyone has fun on the rides and in the swimming pool. One boy almost loses his brother's large size swim- ming trunks while diving. We return to school Cas Juniors in the fall of l955 to find the old place has had quite a face-lifting job. The addition is completed, and the old part has been repainted from ceiling to floor. The new lockers are quite i. ii i ,sei M H.. L52 '-c' wif? Hire the Handicapped Contest Winners Humph'reys, Ayers. the thing. Everyone enjoys slamming everyone else's locker. Our bruised fingers and chipped nails show the results. Alan Gardner is our presi- dent. We plan several dime dances and bake sales. School moves swiftly on with everyone bearing down on their subjects. Football season closes with a three win, six defeat record- The annual school fair is held with the theme Disneyland Basketball sea- son opens. Strange smells permeate the halls-the source, Mrs. Person's chemistry class. Christmas vacation comes with the Mistletoe Ball. Every'- one has a fine time. School takes in. Dick Humphreys wins the local prize in the Hire the Handicapped Essay Contest. Gale Ayers takes both the local and district awards in the poster division of the contest. Fifty-one of us leave with Mr. Ague for a four-day tour of Washington, Richmond, and Williamsburg, Va. We return and get ready for the Junior-Senior Prom. CThe first time the Juniors give the Junior-Senior Prom Seniors a dance instead of a party.i The theme, A Night on a Mississippi Show Boat, is carried out very well with fancy chandeliers, drapes, and even a Casino table. A king and queen are chosen from the Senior Class. The days grow warmer and longer. The fellows are playing base- ball, the girls, softball. The Spring Formal is very successful. Franny Parker reigns as May Day Queen. Joe Fenton is elected president of our class T' it . ll . ig! -Ae We iii.?ie-jg J if :ff 1 ill 1' --I., Ta .. my .T F wir' L. .L WA, Y . '-r,- . School dismisses for the summer. lt is just three shorts months later -September 5, l956. We enter the school as Seniors, the most influential and respected class in the school. To most of us this is the first day of school, for the football players, how- ever, school began a week earlier at football camp. We get our schedule cards and report to classes. Petie Banghart again makes his appear- ance. Mr. Abbot, a new teacher, is quite confused by Petie's irregular class attendance. Things finally set- tle down. Varsity Football A huddle-signals-formation-hup one, two, three-eleven fighting bodies surging forward over the last white line-touchdown. The Lewisburg Green and White team this year, for the first time, attended a pre-season football camp, the purpose being to put the team in the best possible condition in a short time. During this camping experience, there kindled in the personnel of the squad a spirit and sportsmenlike conduct that burned brightly throughout the season- Returning from camp the Dragons faced eight strong opposing teams and achieved an average 3-4-l record- A highlight of the season was the Milton game. Although the Green and White lost, it was here they showed their greatest strength, particularly on the defensive. Mr. Sember was head coach, and line coach was Mr. Himmelreich. They were responsible for publicizing all games, announcing scores in chapel, and holding pep rallies for all home games. During football season they sold tags urging the Dragons to beat their opponents. All money ,made from these tags, plus the pro- ceeds from their dance, went toward the purchase of a megaphone. At the last home basketball game two Jay Vee cheerleaders moved up to replace Frances Parker, lost to the squad by graduation. First Row-Bingaman, Parker Blair. During the first halt of the season the team dropped from the league race by losing some very close games to traditional rivals. The hoopmen caught tire in the second half, clipping down all rivals until they were on top of the Susquehanna League. Highlights of the season were two victories over Mifflinburg, keeping the Little Brown Jug in our possession. John Selsam was high scorer during the season. Junior Varsity Basketball The Jay Vee squad got off to ci bad start, losing many of their games by a very slight margin. The games provided many thrills for spectators, since often the outcome was in doubt until the final whistle. The second halt of the season found the boys showing decided improvement. Denny Lucas led the team in points scored, and Bob Kifolo posted the best record in rebounds. EV V W W N i I M N . Interscholastic wrestling, in its second year at Lewisburg High Varsity School, took its place as one of the most popular varsity sports. Although the team still showed inexperience when they lost to . an old rival, Mifflinburg, they garnered several impressive Wrestllng . victories. Bob Brouse and Bob Degling had very good records. With only two lost to the squad by graduation, prospects for the coming year are bright. First Row-Showalter, Bilger, Reish, Parker, Haas, Clarke. Second Row-Mr. Dohmann, Marvin, Keefer, Kieft, Powell, Benfer, Miller. , The lack of height was the deciding factor in most of the Junlor games played by the junior high team. However, the team was . composed of a group of well co-ordinated boys who by the time Hlgh they are eligible for the varsity squad should develop into a capable group of players. Mr. Dohmann was the coach. Basketball 65 N l l l Q f A,-' - - 5 l 1 2 ' rf r STA. v - 1- L-4.: -, -.- Z.. Z J . . ff, M . M - 2 T .
