5 ' - I QODSBDI?d aQS0S!?0SOa3 S0 Our identity is expressed by our actions, our motions, which reflect our moods. . determination, victory . 9 When our moods become a part of our actions, we are no longer reflecting warped images of ourselves . . . 11 Only when we discover our individuality can we understand our existence . . . ... in a world where the smallest and most insignificant become as beautiful as anything else when we look at it closely. 15 This time, like all times, is a good one if we but know what to do with it. Emerson 16 Desiderata O placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; thev too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for alwavs there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you. no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whate er you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. W ith all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happv. Found in Baltimore. Old Saint Paul ' s Church. Dated 1692 17 22 23 24 Elizabeth M. Reid IN MEMORY OF RAM JOHNSTONE The Class of 1974 will always remember Pam in their thoughts and memories, not only as a student, but as a friend who shared her life with us. For the life of our emotions and our rela- tionships is intermittent. When vou lo e someone you do not love them all the time in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. W ' c ha e so little faith in the ebb and flou- of life, of love, of relationships. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, duration, continuity: when the onl continuity possible in life, is in UTowxh, in fluidity, in freedom, in the sense that the dancers are free, barely touching as they pass, but partners in the same pattern. Ti-DECA and DECA Associates are clubs associated with the Lewis and Clark Distributi ' e Education classes. In the class the students study areas such as salesmanship, advertising and display, types of business organizations, business math, and others. They further their classroom knowledge with actual on-the-job training at their place of employment. Through these clubs the students are able to meet with students from throughout the state as well as those in our own area. They attend two state conferences during the year and culminate the year ' s activities with an annual employer - employee banquet. Often the advisor must make decisions, hard decisions involving questions of taste and propriety. The function of a yearbook is to record the e ents and highlights of a school year. When a student reads his yearbook it is essential that he feel that it is a meaningful ciironicle of his school life. Events happen in and around a school that are seen by some to be controversial. This is the nature of life, and the school, being a mirror of life, is not immune to divergent points of view. What a bland world it would be without controversy. A campus event, seen by some as nothing more than the Age of Aquarius ' answer to golfish-swallowing, and seen by others as an indicator of moral malaise, became prime time news. Streaking became a household word. To not include this phenomenon in at least a tangential way would weaken the validity of this publication. To permit streaking in a public place would have been as offensive to me as it would be to the general public and the majority of my students. The photograph, taken in a private place, is only a pale representation of the public act of streaking. No running through public places, an illegal act infringing on the rights of others, happened. Reasonable precautions were taken to safeguard the rights of others. The only wish the yearbook staff had was to symbolically record a faddish event of the school year. As an advisor, I decided that with a reasonable amount of good taste this photograph could be tactfullv presented. Some mav object to its inclusion, but others may object as strongly to the inclusion of other activities, either sponsored or unspoiisored by the school. I, as a teacher and as a private individual, am critical of several activities, but ncver-the-less they do appear because to leave them out would seriously weaken the efficacy of this yearbook. I onlv request that the readers of this yearbook accord me the same privilege I accord them. Richard F. Brown Yearbook Advisor 166 Courtesy of Burclictts C.
