Mr. Tom Cline gave students opportunities to do things when they wouldn ' t be able to otherwise. Almost every week the members had planned some kind of outing. The highlights of the year were two ski trips to McCall, Idaho, but the members also went bicycling, canoeing, and on various campouts. In the spring they held a major trip. The Outing Club was unique among clubs at L.C. in that it had no officers, as the members believed that none were necessary. Outing Club members consist only of juniors and seniors. In the land of Merlweather and William (M W) there lived ninety zealous maidens who cheered thirty-nine faithful knights to victory every Friday on the field of AIbi in the fall of 1971. Halfway through these games, while the brave heroes rested, the fair maidens carried lighted torches on the field to entertain the spectators. The damsels honored their M W knights by throwing a ball called The Goal Post Gallop . At Christmas the maidens gave gifts to the people at Eastern State Hospital. During the winter they cheered their basketball champions in the Coliseum and at every court where they played. As the new year began these fair ladies were busy preparing for the great show, the Imatuer Amatuer Hour , presented to all of Meriweather and William. In the spring of 1972. the maidens practiced for their host spot in the Grand Lilac Parade. Later they traveled to a Dude Ranch and rode on great s teeds. Baseball and track allured the damsels to cheer for their brave warriors. At the end of May. the ladies had a great party where their new leaders were announced, accepted new members into the zealous group and the oldest members bid farewell to venture from the land of Meriweather and William. Anyone interested in promoting Lewis and Clark spirit can join Tigerettes. Members made signs, had secret pals with the football team and an annual banquet was planned to honor the track and football teams. Tigerettes also put on the Basketball Bounce, under the direction of its two advisors. Miss Martin and Miss Berend. Not all projects had to do with the school however. Sledding and slumber parties and spring picnics added fun to the club, and caroling provided money for the Christmas Fund. Front row: Debbie Day. Laura Wintersteen. Sharon Ward. Darlene Aman. Adelante s membership of 30 rushed around the halls of LC this year selling Mrs. Leiand ' s Pollywogs. The money earned from this project was used to have a banquet in the spring at the Copa de Oro. In Adelante we have done everything possible to inform the members about the Spanish culture by means of talks, slides and guest speakers, expressed Mr. Wesley Read, club advisor. Spokane ' s Inter-High Student Senate (S.I.S.S.) evolved this year into the single most important and widely publicized community forum for high school students in this city. S.I.S.S, was actively involved in the controversy over School District 81 ' s married students policy, and was instrumental in liberalizing the policy, which excluded married students from extracurricular activities. The senate became involved with Expo ' 74 after Mr. King Cole made a presentation for the fair. S.I.S.S. members probed Mr. Cole for over an hour, and then decided to bring in speakers against Expo. In short, they decided to act as a sort of watchdog over Expo ' s progress. Lewis and Clark was deeply involved in the senate. Dave Stanton worked on a major rewrite of the constitution. Fred Parady served as spring semester President, while Kathee Coe was fall semester Secretary. These were the only two offices the senate has so you can see L.C. was a major influence. In a single year. S.I.S.S.changed from a narrow, school-oriented organization to a council dealing with community projects. If present interest continues, high school students will finally have a voice in Spokane. Toastmasters Evergreen Junior Toastmasters was formed to help develop poise and skill in public speaking. Along this line, the Toasties held their annual mock trial at the Spokane County Courthouse. The trial was an imitation of a real one, only using false evidence and facts. There was a prosecuting attorney and the defendant was a teacher who was put on trial for high misdemeanors. During the course of the year the Toasties sponsored a liars contest and had two house parties. Fall semester officers were John Loeffler, president; Scott Smith, vice-president; Joe Thayer, secretary; George Anderson, treasurer; Kerlin Nogle, sgt.-at- arms. Front row: Mr. Milton, Tom Kundig. At misdeason the varsity was in second place, only two losses out of first, even though the team went through various shakeups in lineup from week to week. In varsity tournament competition, Fred Parady and Dave Stanton took fourth place at the University of Idaho tournament. In junior varsity tournaments, Charles Karavitis, Robynn Sleep and Tim Wedlake teamed up to take third place in Richland. After Tim moved up to varsity Charlie and Robynn again teamed up to take third at Gonzaga. In all competition up to midseason, the team had posted a fine 61-30 win-loss record. In individual events, Bill Graham and Mary Malloy took second and third, respectively, at Richland in Expository speaking. Mary Malloy, Fred Parady and Robynn Sleep frequently attained first-speaker rankings. This year ' s resolution was Resolved: That the jury system in the United States should be significantly changed. With a nucleus of junior debaters, the team is looking forward to next year. Front row: Robynn Sleep, Laura Wintersteen, Mary Malloy, Lois Berg. Back row: Mrs. Keigley. Greg Snyder. Charles Bowers. For example, at one meeting last fall Mr. Ron Miller, head of the history department, came and spoke about the problems in the Middle East. Mr. Miller had traveled extensively throughout the area. The club was planning to concentrate on new topics as they came up in the news for the spring semester. The fall semester president was Bill Heylman. and Dale Pattison served in that capacity for the spring semester. Front row: Mrs Wright. Robynn Sleep, Bill Heylman. Jean Kirihara. To become eligible to be in the club, a person must have his name submitted by a club member. The applicant then must speak before the club ' s officers, who judge and criticize his speaking abilities. Senate annually holds a mock trial, complete with judge and jury, a party at Christmas, and a picnic in the spring. Papyrus The school ' s oldest club. Papyrus, is a writing club. Its purpose is to create a better understanding between the writer and what he writes. This is done as a group at the club ' s frequent meetings. At these meetings the members read aloud their own works, and the others offered criticism and advice on how the person could improve his styles or skills or compliments on the talent that he had shown. The main function of Papyrus is to get together and have fun with writing, explained A.F. Rice, the club ' s spring semester president.
