Courtesy of Dorian Studio Principal William E.L. Donner The beautiful color photograph on the opposite page is a reproduction of our newly approved school crest. The idea was initiated by last year’s senior class, but the big job of developing and completing it was achieved by the hardworking committees of the ASB. Anyone who has been associated with Lewis and Clark for any period of time is quick to realize we are endowed with a rich heritage of traditions and spirit. The goal of the ASB committees was to portray by symbols and a motto the most significant aspects of this heritage, and to this end they succeeded very well. The figures of the explorers Lewis and Clark” represent not only the challenge of the future of their era, but that of our own as well. The selection of the Latin words “Fides (Faith), “Noscentia” (Knowledge), and Virtus (Virtue) for the school motto was an excellent choice. The left-hand section of the shield shows the front portion of the building; this symbolizes the academic traditions of the school. The bottom portion of the shield is taken from the architectural design seen above each entrance to the school. The figure at the right represents activities and is a replica of the figure above the Hunter Fieldhouse. Occupying the place of prominence at the top of the shield is the tiger. This, of course, represents the “tiger spirit” which typifies all our endeavors. The “tiger spirit” has certainly been prevalent this year. Though ours is now the smallest school in the city, we still retain a place of prominence in both activities and academic fields. I feel this year’s senior class has especially made this so, and to them I wish to extend my appreciation for their contributions. I hope each member of the Class of 1968 will be able to meet the challenges of the future in a manner that is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Lewis and Clark High School. William E. L. Mr. Edward Clark Exchange Teacher from Australia The old man over the road tells you, you look like his grandson. You know the appearance of his grandson and feel this to be rather unflattering. To him, his grandson is the greatest; you have received his greatest compliment. The individual coming to your community from outside, and feeling immediately at home, pays you his highest compliment. Countries, like people, receive a stream of agreement from their friends and disapproval from their opponents. The constant question is, “What do you really think of our students, schools, policies, ideas, way of life? While realizing that there is no average Australian or American student or attitude, I will attempt to give some honest answers, rather than the polite replies one would expect of a guest. Your students may choose a wide range of subjects for short periods, while ours have fewer choices and retain them for longer periods, varying emphasis on breadth and depth. Our students must overcome state-wide examinations covering several years work to achieve their major goals, while yours are assessed, step by step, within the school-uniformity of coverage and assessment, compared to varioation and individuality. Our students, like yours, vary from responsible and industrious to those who feel that the world owes them a living. The majority of ours leave high school at the end of the tenth grade. Those remaining are aiming at university or advanced college. Trade courses, advanced college courses, and university courses are specialized, with students expected to “round out” their own education. The present trend is to a more balanced approach with later specialization. You believe your country to be the strongest, richest, and best. Don’t tell others. They know the former two to be true and are prejudiced on the latter. Expect unfavorable international comment. Being number one as a nation brings immediate and usually unjustified criticism of anything but instant and complete success. We thank you for the part you play as a nation and add the special personal thanks to you as a school and community for your ready acceptance, warm hospitality and genuine interest, as we have made our temporary home in Spokane.
