o4 0 0 0 o 0 standing in the morning haze; Reflecting upon its multitude of glories; Anticipating new faces, hopes, tomorrows, Merging all these together to form . . . jennie adams, managing editor tamara phillipp, art duiiald g. black, editorial and business adviser barbara b. fellows, art adviser clarence e. miller, photography adviser I the twenty -fifth annual lewis and dark tiger lewis and dark high school Spokane, Washington presents not merely a building but a road of learning traveled by the curious . . . where old landmarks fall to be replaced by the sign of progress . . . not just a school but the heart of a territory crisscrossed by solitary lanes . . . . . . by meandering boulevards lined with memories of past glories . . . and someday by a freeway ushering in the future a mingling of today and yesterday forming a highway to tomorrow 8 a road clearly marked . . . Since the theme for this year ' s Tiger is Route 67, I would like to point cut that from its very beginning as the Lewis and Clark Trail, this route has been clearly marked with dignity, honor and the spirit of a Bengal Tiger by thousands of Lewis and Clark graduates. As you Seniors complete this phase of your journey, I wish to compliment you for helping to brooden and more positively identify this route. From this junction you have now reached there are many routes leading out across the horizon. If you follow those which are marked by the same qualities as Route 67, you will surely arrive at worthwhile destinations. As you leave the portals of Lewis and Clark to select your route, I would like to wish each of you a happy, safe and successful journey. William E. L. How could I hope to answer the complicated questions put forward by doctors, solicitors, chemists, or even the man on the street? Seventeen had always seemed an old age —but I began to realize how young, in the ways of the world, I really was. Now seven months later I no longer have doubts or nervous fears. I no longer wonder why a professional man or woman was not sent in my place to tell the people of Australia about America ' s system of manufacturing, eco- nomic structure and complicated foreign affairs. All of these factors are, of course, an intricate part of a nation, but these people were just like me. Although they were interested in hearing all I knew about these matters, they were mainly concerned with the people— the plain, ordi- nary citizens, you and me. I have gained so much during my year ' s stay in Aus- tralia that i feel I will always be indebted to the country and her easy-going people. The greeting, How ya going, mate? carries for me a personal meaning of friendship, one that lies far beneath the surface of the four words. I only hope that in return I have shown the people with whom I hove come in contact that all American teen- agers do not grow beards and carry protest signs. It will not be long now before I return home. I am often asked if I will not be glad to get bock. How can a person say that he never yearns to see a familiar face? Of course he does; it ' s only human. Yet while I am here I will alwavs hove the ticket to get back, but once I am home it may be a long time before I return. But one day I wi ll go back-to a land where the hopping kangaroos are few and far between, but where those intervals are filled with opportunities and people willing to lend a helping hand. After a slow start, the Lewis and Clark Tiger football team come back in the lost half of their season to take second place in the City League with a win-loss record of 6 and 3. As one of the smallest teams in the city, the Tigers won their last five games including o 27-21 thumping of a Gonzogo Prep team which was roted as second in the state going into that gome. What the LC gridders lacked in size they made up for in speed. The fastest team in the city was made of such bocks as John Minnix, Ray Bell, Ron White, Bob Minnix, Jon Soger and Bill Etter. Of six Tigers who mode All-City Teams, three were juniors. Quarterback, Bill Etter; halfback. Bob Minnix; and guard, Jim Pearson next year will provide the backbone for what will probably be one of the best football teams to be seen at LC for several years. Terry Covender, Tom Stewart and Ray Bell were second team All-City selections. The Tigers were second in the league in team offense and third in team defense to prove that they were both a team and a set of stars. Some of the Tiger gridders were Linemen— Joe McCormack, Ron Sheperd, Mike Saod, Mike Clarke, Skip Buchanan, Pat Saad, Tom Ferris, Art Valiquette, Jim Nichols, Bruce Johnson, Art Ashe, Mike Adams, and Bob Leslie. Some of the outstanding backs were Ron White, John Borkley, Jerry Dyer, Jon Soger, the two Minnix brothers, and Mike Keilty. If next year ' s Tiger team will ploy with as much de- termination and strength as their immediate predeces- sors, look for them to win the city championship next year and possibly even go for an undefeated season. Coach George Sullivan Despite the efforts of Shadle Park defenders, L.C. quarterback BILL ETTER drives toward the goal line in on attempt to pick up needed yards. ELL i22) pours it on in a game with Unhindered by the attempts of Pirate blockers. Tiger tackle TERRY CAVENDER 55) stops Rogers fullback Jerry Hite as end Art Ashe moves in to help. Jim Nichols Joe McCormack Mike Adams Terry Cavender Skip Buchanan senior Although they were overshadowed by some fine juniors, the seniors were a vital part of this year ' s Tiger grid team. Only three of the upper classmen (tackle Tom Stewart, cen- ter Terry Cavender, and back Ray Bell) were mentioned on All-City lists, but L.C. fans know that with- out them and players like Skip Bu- chanan, Art Valiquette, and Ron White LC ' s offense would not have Mike Saad Ron White Tom Ferris gridders been nearly as potent, and without such scrappers as Tom Ferris, John Minnix, Art Ashe, and Joe McCor- mack the Tiger defense would have been missing part of its backbone. Providing the team with spirit and morale, as well as their ability, this year ' s seniors were the type of play- ers essential to any successful team, whether it be in sports or any other field. Placing first in their division in the Spokane City League and going on to take first in their division in state-v ide competition, the Lewis and Clork cross-country squad had one of its finest seasons ever. Coached by Mr. Arthur Frey, the Tiger harriers set all-time records for the lowest scores ever in the All-City meet with 26; and in the Amateur Athletic Union meet, 37. (The lowest score wins in a cross-country race.) The harrier team featured such fine runners as seniors Fritz Gibbs, Bari Newton, John Skadan, Gordy Veium, and Tom Burkwist, who set a new record of 9:53 on West Valley ' s difficult course. That effort topped the previous best time set by Rick Riley last year. Bill Maxey, and what their coach called a perfect atti- tude towards the game, the Lewis and Clark Tiger basketball team finished in third place in Division II of the City League. Considering their handicaps, the LC maplemen really had a great season. The Tigers had guards and forwards but really no one big man for a center. Many of the starters and most of the relief men were juniors, making the Tigers one of the youngest teams in the city this year. Coach Robert L. Scott had nothing but praise for his team, As far as desire to win, and attitude are concerned, I hove never worked with a better bunch of kids. If, with experi- ence, their ability catches up to their desire, we could and should be right there knocking on the door again next year. Even though the team was junior-laden it will miss its seniors next year: Bill Maxey, team captain and inspirational award winner,- Dick Lopes, John Minnix and Mike Peck, all two- year veterans; Ron Honda, Art Ashe and Jerry Sneva. Among returning players to next year ' s squad will be Bill Etter, Bob Minnix and Dusty Hutsell, three men who started most of this season and gained a great deal of experience. Also coming back will be Tom Ekins and Gale Allen, the two most promising players for that pivot-man spot next year, and Bob Leslie, Julius Williams and Jim Ivory, who all played during lost season and show great promise for next year. Captain and Inspirational Award Winner Bill Maxey Coach Bob Scott 18: outstanding BILL MAXEY, at six-foot, one-inch, was a second team all-city choice. Bill led his team in scoring, averaging more than 16 points per gome in his second year of DUSTY HUTSELL, a five-foot, ten-inch junior guard played on the storting team most of the year. Dusty, who is very quick and a good rebounder, should be an excellent player next year. 182 basketball players BOB MINNIX, a speedy five-foot, ten-inch junior guard proved to be a vital part of the Tiger five, dazzling opponents on offense and stealing the ball frequently on defense. BILL ETTER, a six-foot, one-inch, 175-pound junior, av- eraged 10.6 points per game. Bill, one of the most consistent players all year, has a great outside shot and should be o standout next year. JERRY SNEVA, came off the bench in mid-season to become a tremendous asset to his team. At five-foot, eleven-inches, 160 pounds, Jerry is an excellent boll- handler and an effective rebounder. 183 b- squad basketball With a good season the LC B-squad team gained knowledge and experience for future Varsity seasons. Tiger matmen came on strong to finish fourth in the City League this year. Under new coach, Bill Denholm, the grapplers lost their first three matches, but showing fine determination, came back to win five straight enroute to a 5-3 league record and a 7-5 overall mark. The team consisted of many fine individual wrestlers. Jim Weinstock, Bob Devine, Pot Fitzpatrick, and Mike Reilly all ended the season with very fine records. In addition, this year ' s team possessed outstanding spirit and a fine attitude which they proved in their fine comeback. Prospects for next year look good with such scrappers as Jim Pearson, Terry Fitzpatrick, Jim Kacalek, Tom and Pat McRae returning. Rick Moras, on outstanding freshman prospect, who was ineligible tor varsity competition this year will also be back. A com- bination of talented veterans and spirited new- comers, the Bengals used their strong hitting and outstanding defense to full advantage, in an at- tempt to make up for the absence of a veteran pitcher. An infield consisting of Tom Gilbert at first. Bill Maxey at second, Don Lowry at shortstop and Dusty Hutsell at third was one of the best infields not only defensively, but offensively as well. The outfield was marked by unusual speed, as Bruce Johnson, Bob Minnix, Jim Nimnicht, and Jim Pearson patrolled the Bengal Pastures. The pitching chores were handled by Greg Clarke, Bob Hoogenson and Randy Heinz, who, despite lack of experience, did a fine job. Jerry Dyer and Mike Clarke handled the catching chores. Prospects for next year ' s team look good, as there will be many lettermen returning. Juniors Hutsell and Lowry will be back to anchor down the infield and the whole outfield, with the exception of Nimnicht, will be back. The Tigers should be strong in the pitching department, as Juniors Heinz and Clarke will still be around, along with Sophomore Mike Clarke, who will handle the catching. The Tiger trackmen opened their season with a predicted win of the Jack Mooberry reloys, beating second place Ferris by almost 10 points. The Tigers were very strong in almost all of the running events with the best set of relay teams to be seen at LC in several years. John Minnix was the number-one man on the sprints. He was bocked-up by Art Ashe and sophomore Jim Greene. The quarter-mile and the mile relay team was composed of such fine runners as Jim Nichols, Rick Pansie, Jim Allers, Geoy Hayashi, and Ray Bell. In the half-mile the Tigers boasted runners suc;h as Fritz Gibbs, John Skodan and Gordy Veium. In the long distances. Coach Art Frey had the city ' s best one-two punch (one and two mile runs) in Tom and Phil Burkwist. Along with the Burkwist brothers were such fine dis- tance aces as Sonny Anderson, Jim Williams, Foul Fenske and Tom Porter. Doing a commendable job in the hurdle events was veteran Bari Newton along with first year men, Jim Ivory, Bill Etter and Ken Suemori. In the field events LC was not quite as good although there were plenty of stars. Long-jumpers included: Minnix, Ivory, Lloyd Joseph and Ashe. High-jumping was led by Bell, Joseph, Julius Williams and Ashe. The pole vault and the shot put were the two weakest events for the Tigers this year. However, with experience and desire next year should be better.
