Black, Editorial and Business Advise Walter C. Zollars, Jr., Art Adviser Clarence E. Miller, Photography Adviser The ' Trail of the Tiger is an appropriate theme for this year ' s annual. As we look into the past, we are most impressed with countless events in Lewis and Clcfrk ' s history Which are the milestones that mark the Trail of the Tiger. These milestones range from recognition for high academic accomplishments by Lewis and Clark students, faculty, and the school in general to great athletic achievements by various teams and individuals. But above and beyond these signal honors, we find the Trail of the Tiger clearly marked by the high standards, great spirit, and fine traditions of our school. Although Lewis and Clark has, this year, a much smaller student body and a new administration, the student body has accepted the challenge of maintaining Lewis and Clark ' s excellent image. As your new principal, I wish to compliment you in general, and the Class of 1966 in particular, for meeting, as you have, the changes of this past year. I feel that the Seniors, especially, sensed a need for extraordinary effort on their part to keep alive the Tiger spirit, and they have provided much of the leadership to ac- complish just that. To the Class of 1966 I say — may your spirit always be representative of the true Tiger spirit by supporting that which is best in whatever endeavor you undertake. William E. L. Donner Courtesy Donon Studio Principal William E. L. Donner Mr. William E. L. Donner, Lewis and Clark ' s fourth principal, is an L.C. graduate. He attended Eastern Washington State College and Whitworth and did his graduate work at the University of Washington. Following college Mr. Donner fought with the Fifth Marine Division at Iwo Jima in World War II. During the years 1946 to 1950 he was a mathematics teacher here at L.C, but was called away to the Korean War in 1950. Upon his return in 1952 Mr. Donner again taught mathematics at Lewis and Clark until 1957 when he was appointed vice principal under Mr. A. L. Parker. Last August Mr. Donner was appointed principal following the retirement of Mr. Parker. terminated, I may. perhaps, be excused a look backward. The more than forty years of my identification with the educational community have brought me rich rewards in friendships and in service to the youth of the city. I am deeply grateful to the many wonderful students coming from all economic elements of our society who have not only sustained my faith in the great public school system of America, but who have, for so many years, given me such treasured respect and affection. To all of these and to my many devoted colleagues of long years standing, my deepest thanks for every smile, word, and deed which have contributed to making my stay in Spokane so memorable. Louis S. It is a pity that time goes by so quickly. When I look back now, I realize how many prejudices I had. My thinking has changed in many ways but only in favor of America. I am most impressed with your friendliness and the interest you showed in my country and its problems. We in Europe hear so many things about you, but no newspaper article ever mentioned that the outstanding trait of an American is friendliness. Your friendliness was everywhere— at church, in your community life, in the homes where I have spent wonderful hours, and above all, at L.C. Do you realize how lucky you are to go to such a great school? The first letters I wrote to my family and friends back in Germany dealt mainly with this unbelievably pleasant and friendly atmosphere at school. Here school life is really fun. Now I know what real school spirit is. You have demonstrated it at the football and basketball games, and the pep cons which fascinated me most of all the school activities. The motto of A.F.S. is: Walk together, talk together Oh, ye people of the earth. Then and only then shall ye Have peace on earth. Thank you, each of you great kids and the whole faculty at L.C. for letting me contribute to this aim. iJoCT MR Linda Mart ACKERMAN Ferris Pre Science Club; Choir SC C Diane Maurine ADAMS Grant Math Club Treat.; Usherettes; G.F. Sullivan New Head Coach George M. Sullivan did a fine job and his varsity gridders put forth a strong effort in the tough City League competition this year. The Tigers tied for fourth place with NC even though the footballers shut out the Indians twice, 33-0 and 20-0. LC also defeated a fired-up Ferris Saxon team at the beginning of the season, 24-12. The Bengals made a tough effort and came close to victory against City League champions Gonzaga Prep. Twice against second-place Shadle Park, the Tiger gridders made a strong showing. These four games were the best and toughest of the season, the Tigers losing by very narrow margins in all. Many outstanding individuals played for LC this year. Along with Team Captain Bruce Bledsoe and Inspirational Award winner Gerald Moore, there were many offensive standouts. Among the graduating seniors were quarterbacks Craig Austin and Greg Beaman. Craig did a complete job of quarterbacking the club until an injury late in the season. Greg did a fine job filling in for Austin. At end, seniors Bob Coon, Mike McRae, and Dick Speer were the quarterbacks ' chief targets. Bern Cummins, Gene Baldwin, Scott Neilson and Brian Breen did an excellent job in blocking and pass protection against tough defensive lines. Our defensive unit, being the highlight of the year, was led by Brian Breen and Bruce Bledsoe defensive captains , Bern Cummins, Gene Baldwin, Tom Sneva, Mark Hussein, and Skip Buchanan. The LC backfield placed first in pass defense against opposing teams this year. Returning next year will be lettermen Ray Bell, Art Ashe, John and Bob Minnix, Tom Stewart, Art Valiquette, and Bill Etter. They should have a good season next year, having shown moments of superb talent this year. n Bern Cummins Bern Cummins leads the blocking as Art Ashe carries for LC against Gonzaga. L. (Squintyi Hunter f Former Principal A. L. Parker Principal William E. L. Donner Hunter Field House Dedication Lewis and Clark ' s impressive new addition was officially dedicated on April 14, as the E. L. Squintyi Hunter Field House. The entire student body attended the ceremonies at which various dignitaries praised Coach Hunter ' s achieve- ments. Among the honored guests were Mr. Jack Friel, com- missioner of the Big Sky Conference; Mr. William W. Taylor, principal of Shadle Park High School; Mr. Lyle A. Maskell, former LC football coach,- Mr. Byron L. Swanson, Board of Education member who made the dedication, and Mr. Abra- ham Lincoln Parker, former LC principal. In the 39 years Squinty Hunter coached at Lewis and Clark, the team won 21 City Championships, made 21 trips to sta ' e, and took three state championships. The appreciation of the Lewis and Clark students was expressed by Principal William E. L. Donner who said, He Squintyi was one of the few who could inspire a team by his mere presence. Lyle A. Maskell, left, and Jack Friel hold Mr. Hunter ' s por- trait, which hangs in the entrance to the Hunter Field House, while Squinty looks on. 136 CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country Tigers, built around the outstanding talent of Larry Marker, were spurred on by a host of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. Captain and Inspirational Award Winner, Larry Marker, was a top man both in city and state competition. Marker performed well in helping the team to victory, and went on to earn third place in state competition. In a post-season invitational meet in Seattle, February 12, Larry finished third out of 200 top state runners. Coach Arthur Frey believes that Larry Marker has developed into one of the best runners Lewis and Clark has seen. In a ten-team city league the Tigers finished third in B-League and fourth in A competition, with a record of four wins and three losses. Victories came against Gonzaga, North Central, West Valley and Central Valley. The biggest win came in a meet with West Valley. The Tigers took a sweep, winning all five ribbons. The runners placed third in two invitational tournaments: the In- land Empire A.A.U. and the Moses Lake Invitational. Prospects for next year show great potential for Lewis and Clark victory. Phil Burkwist set new records in winning in both Freshmen, All-City and A.A.U. competition. Returning lettermen include Gail Anderson, Phil and Tom Burkwist, Dick McAuliffe, Bari New- ton and Mike Travis. Senior lettermen are Larry Marker and Pete Talbot. The manager was Don Mukai. Coach Arthur Frey BASKETBALL With the combination of individual inspiration and outstanding coaching, the Lewis and Clark Tigers became the Spokane City Champions, and placed seventh in state competition, with a 20-3 record. In a strong league, the Tigers lost only to West Valley in two contests, 60-55 and 72-66. However, for the City Title against WV, the Tigers won 58-53. Lewis and Clark ' s only other loss was to Richland, 73-71, in overtime play during the finals of the State AA Regional Tournament. Many outstanding players built an almost unbeatable team. Jay Bond was the center of team victory. He earned a position on the All-City First Team and went on to be selected to the All-Regional and All-State First Teams. Bond walked away Inspirational Award Winner, Tom Sneva ; with to P honors this ieoson and numerous records. Jay ' s Team Captain George Cain records include: Tied most points in a Coliseum game, 39; most points in a career, 935, and most field goals in a game, 17. Tom Sneva, Inspirational Award Winner, and George Cain, Team Captain and All-Regional Second Team, showed great talent. Gene Baldwin, All-Regional Second Team, helped win vital games. Junior Bill Maxey, also on the All-Regional Sec- ond Team, should prove to be an excellent ball handler again next season. Other players who helped earn the City Title were Mike Al- ward, Mike McRae, Bob Greene, Marq Koslowsky, Barry Briggs, Bill Lund, Greg Beaman, and juniors John Minnix, Mike Peck, and Dick Lopes. With speed and agility the Tigers should do well next year. STARTING Inspirational Award Winner Tom Sneva showed excellent ball handling and determination at his position of guard. Great passing and pivot man Gene Baldwin made the All-Regional Second Team. Team Captain George Cain earned a second team All-Regional position. He was successful under the boards and showed consistency in scoring. Bill Maxey, All-Regional Second Team, made many steals as a Junior. B-Squad maplemen took second in the B-League. Row ll Chris Aiken, Mike Adams, Ron Honda, Doug Iverson, Jerry Snevo, John Emery, Dujly Hutsell. Row It Bob Winnix, Bob Leslie, Pal Sood, Tom Ekins, Bill Etter, Ted Haynes, Gale Allen. WRESTLING CITY CHAMPIONS nix i f H J Liwir p in L Co-Captain Tim Fitzpatrick Co-Captain Bruce Bledsoe Tri-District 3rd-place Winner Jon Mackenzie The Tiger Grapplers, coached by Mr. Max F. Schoening, won their first City Championship title with a 7-1 record this season losing only to Central Valley in an upset. Preseason picks showed the Tigers ' chances for the City Title slim, built only around big ifs. Because of the lack of individual strength, the Tigers were ranked as underdogs below the previous year ' s powers: Shadle Park, North Central and West Valley. How- ever, through a great team effort and Tiger spirit, the grapplers went all the way. After months of preseason training, the Tigers tore up Mead in their first expected victory 28-12. Shadle Park and North Central came next and the Tigers were underdogs in both contests. The battles were uphill fights all the way, but the Tigers pulled through with a 26-18 victory over Shadle Park and a 22-19 victory over the Indians Then the Tigers massacred the University Titans 45-3. Spirits were high as a Lewis and Clark championship was becoming a possibility. The next Tiger victim was West Valley, 25-20. The wrestlers relaxed and succumbed to a 21-19 defeat at the hands of Central Valley. Following the defeat, spirits again arose with the 25-20 win over Ferris and the final victory over Rogers, 27-14, thus cinching the title. Pot Fitzpatrick at 120 pounds; Bob Devine, 127 pounds,- Tim Fitzpatrick, 133 pounds; Jon Mackenzie, 138 pounds, and Chris Kopczynski, 154 pounds, were sure winners in league action. Upper weight divisions also showed talent. Robin Van Allen ' s drive in the unlimited weight class clinched many important victories. Bruce Bledsoe helped the team keep rolling and showed great improvement throughout the season. Jon Mackenzie won third place in the Tri-District matches, while Bob Devine and Tim Fitzpatrick took third in the Sub- District. Bruce Bledsoe, Jim Weinstock, and Robin Van Allen also placed in the Sub-District. Coach Max F. Schoening receives the City League Trophy from Principal William E. L. Donner. TRACK Coach Arthur Frey LC tracksters started off a good season with wins over Mead and Gon- zaga Prep. The Team ' s chief strength was in the distance races, Larry Marker and Phil Burkwist starring in the two-mile, Tom Burkwist leading the milers, and Gordy Veium in the 880. John Minnix led the team in the 100-yard dash, the 220, and the broad jump. Robin Van Allen was the Tiger ' s best shot-putter. The swift 880 and mile relay teams were led by Jim Nichols, Don Brown, Geoy Haya- shi, Ron Sims, John Minnix, Ron White, and Jim Long. Bari Newton and Gordy Veium were the team ' s top hurdlers. The Tiger nine took full advantage of its quick and efficient infield along with a good pitching staff and dependable barters. The pitching staff was headed by veterans Greg Bogus and Mike Randall. Bogus also played right field when not on the mound. Juniors Bob Gix and Bob Haagenson, who also saw action on the mound, will be promising returnees for next year. Mike Randall Bill Copley and Bill Lund were the only seniors in the infield, but returning next year will be: Tom Gilbert at first base, Greg Bever, a promising second baseman and Dusty Hutsell, a sophomore third baseman. George Cain had an excellent season at the catcher ' s position. Completing the line-up for the Tiger nine are the fielders who lacked experience early in the season, but learned their positions well. They should be valuable next year. Haagenson and Mark Hussein traded back and forth during the season for left field. Bill Maxey, also one of the team ' s most dependable batters, played center field. The right field position was a contest all season between Jim Nimnicht and Tom Stewart. Of course, no team can be complete without a coach. Pete Weitz was as good and as colorful as any the city league has seen. Coach Weitz has had many championship teams at Lewis and Clark and can be expected to continue his outstanding record. r 4 Coach Peter B. GYMNASTICS In a relatively new sport, the Lewis and Clark gymnasts did well in a first-year league sport. Mike Berg, member of the Spokane Ski Racing Association, placed third and second for a combined effort of second place in the expert class of the Giant Slalom races at Mount Spokane this year. Mike will be racing in class A next year and plans to race in Canada later this year. Outstanding Senior Athletes Mike Berg Linda Wolcott showed much success in swimming feats last summer. During the summer of 1965 she won the Junior National 400 meter indi- vidual medley race in Miles City, Montan a. Another outstanding accomplishment for Linda was achieved when she placed thirteenth out of hundreds of girls in the Canadian Olympic trials. « Senior golfer Jay Delaney has participated in numerous tournaments. His most outstanding feat is a second place in the Washington State Junior Men ' s Tournament, where he shot a 74-76-150. In a Spokane regional tournament consisting of 50 golfers from the eastern side of the state, Jay tied for second. Jay also has done well in school golf. Leading the team as first man, he was one of the medalists in the All-City Tournament last spring.
