As it was landing, the single passenger, Circus Agent Linda Devine anticipated her talent search with grave doubts. Goes to Meet Public Officials At the airport she took a cab driven by Dwyla Seehorn to the city hall, where A.P. Foreign Correspondent Don Kendrick sat in the front office discussing Harry Carter's butterfly business with Butterfly Catcher Don Ayer and Jan Stevenson, tax reduction adviser to the Democrats. g Upon inquiry she was told that perhaps Karen Spaeth, dirt collector, Marie McArdle, garbage collector, or Cathy Geddis, federal mediator of the city hall hall proctors, could help her. At the same time these three were in the inner office discussing a new referendum bill with Ed McDowell, the local guillotine op- erator, Dick Larson, liquor inspector, formerly from Idaho, Bob Pierson, street cleaner, and Nita Pohl, federal treasurer. Linda was told that Protection Racketeers Al Andrews and Jack Kulp or Magician Howard Reynolds could probably help her as they should know of some pretty good acts. Rey- nolds, they said, was currently featured at the Rainbow-on-the-Amazon with his cute little assistant, Jeanne Smith, as the team of The Magnificent Reynoldo, World's Greatest Magi- cian, and Jeannie the Magic Maid. Then she learned that for animals, she ought to consult Jungle Explorers: Joyce Litch, Barbara Poston, Vivian Poston, and Barbara Knudson. Meets Prominent Citizens While making calls upon these prominent local citizens, Linda learned of several resi- dents who were connected with show business. They included Beverly Clepper and Polly Be-ll, circus contortionists, Laura Herrington, bur- lesque queen, Kathrine Kirkham, torch singer, and Hat Freeman Wrestler, John Peterson. She made plans to interview these artists with the hope that they would fit into her show. Since her talent hunt seemed to be pro- gressing better than she had hoped, Linda de- cided to make a sight-seeing tour of the vil- lage. She had gone but a few steps when she met an old friend, Dick Rush, a traveling sales- man for the Tigerville Lolypop company. When he learned of her business in Tigerville, Dick offered to assist in the talent search, and of- fered to escort her on her sight-seeing tour. See Old Friends Their first stop was the office of the manu- facturers of Gunny-Sack Hermit suits, designed exclusively for the Tigerville factory by Nick McPhee, the town's most eligible bachelor. The two were advised by the receptionist, Margie Gard, that the board of directors, including such leading citizens as Gordon Vails, Launce Macomber, and Bud Miller, were interviewing applicants for the position as head of the de- partment where the seams in tight levis are let out. First in the waiting line was Don Marx. The trio, anxious to chat with their old friends, hired Don and extended to Dick and Linda an invitation to dine with them at Dick Henriksen's famous night club, the Jungle Bungle. They insisted on making it that evening be- cause featured an the program wasthe Frankie Laine of the Amazon, Crooner Doug, Nash. After making a date for that night, Linda and Dick continued on their way. As they strolled down the palm-lined ave- nue, they came first to the used car lot of Mad Madeline Graybill. Their old friend was busy selling a shiny '29 Model A to an enthusi- astic native, Bob Williams, who had just dis- covered a uranium mine. Not wanting to bother her, they went on and came to the mechanic shop of Georgia Bryan, where she, her sister, Lillian, and Beverly Spencer operated a flour- ishing hot rod parts business. A Enter Super Market ln the next block was the village market place, where the native street venders gath- ered. The biggest stand of all was owned by Helen Van Tyne, who sold match sticks to all of Tigerville. Dina Salagianis operated a flours ishing popcorn stand, and near her, Roger Estes displayed his paintings as a front for his work as a bookie. Kenneth Hicks operated a fabulous super market. Deciding to take a look around, our heroine and her escort entered the super market and came upon Don Rafferty busily sweeping the aisles. A little grim man with a carnation in his buttonhole stood in a corner in front of the Grape-Nuts Flakes stand. Realizing he was the floorwalker, they went to greet him. Only then did they recognize him as Charles Fischer. He suggested that they visit the demonstration on the second floor. Watch Demonstration It sounded interesting, so they proceeded to watch Delores Griffith illustrate the good points of the reducing pill she had invented. Modeling as the before was none other than Tom Hill, the after 'Bones Garvin. Linda hired Tom to stand in for the circus Fat Lady, then purchased a bottle of the magi- cal pills iust in case she ever got his lunch by mistake. Then she and Dick went back into the street, where Joyce McCormic, with the aid of Jim Morris and the hindrance of Ensley Rofinot, was sweeping the refuse from the street under the rug of Lois Hengen's tobacco auctioneering stand. The sun was sinking into the sea, and our friends realized that time was running short, so they hastened toward the night club. They hailed Dwyla's cab. Then as they drove toward the Jungle Bungle, a large group engaged in an argument on the high school football field attracted Linda's attention. Breaks Up Fight Look, Dick, she said, isn't that Donna Hooper and Dawnn Swan coaching? Hoping to straighten out the trouble, Dick iumped out of the cab and hurried to the center of the field. When he appeared, the coaches forgot their differences, to inform him that, of his old class- mates, Lois Vallance and Pat Gation were teaching chemistry and mathematics in the school, Tom Powers, they said, was directing the Music department, Neil Cochran had iust come from the States to teach ballet, Judi Ashley was coach of the champion swimming team, and Leta Herrington had charge of the nursery. Oh, my gosh, said Dick suddenly, it's almost time to meet Launce. Let's get going! Arrive at Club They arrived at the club a few minutes later, and were met byyJean Stroh, maitre D', who led them to the table occupied by Launce, Gordon, and Bud. Adele Grover, waiter, sug- gested to them the special Tiger steak being offered that evening in honor of Doug's ap- pearance, by Chef Jean Sage. As soon as they gave their order, Cigarette Girl Marianne Mercer approached. Behind 'her was a very glamorously bedecked creature, whom they recognized as Marline Berlat. She informed them that she was president of a lonely hearts club, and had promised to meet here Oil Ty- coon Bill' Henderson. When, after dinner, danc- ing, and finishing the business of the talent search, he had still not arrived, they drove Marline and Linda home.
