The Tigers won the Clarkston Invitational Banana Belt meet at Clarkston, and they also won the Invitational Spring Track meet at W.S.C. Lewis and Clark won also the annual Central Valley Relays and at this event the high hurdle shuttle relay team made up of Dever Gregg, Buzz Bailey, Merle Haffner and Bob Harder set a new meet record. C 39 ' j On May 14 at the Spokane District Meet, North Central cut the Tigers out with 46 ' 2 points to L C. ' $ 39 ' 2 but L. C. ' s trocksters came back to be the leading squad from the Spokane district at the State Meet at Pullman with a record of 15Vi points. The freshman track squad finished the season with second place in the frosh city league. On May 19 the frosh took fourth place in the City Freshman Meet by beating Libby and Gonzago with 16!6 points. The frosh results were: L. C. 47, followed by Gonzago and Libby N. C. 52 ' 2 followed by L. C. 31, and Libby The Tiger cross-country squad missed the city title by a hair after an otherwise good season. After beating Gonzaga and Rogers, they lost the championship to North Central by dropping their final meet to the Indians, 27 to 28. Roy Donder— Pitcher for the B squad, he showed his ability when he pitched three con- secutive shutout games in the ' 48 season. Chuck Coleman- Here ' s the player who held down third base for the varsity team during ' 48. Gunnard Johnson— Gunnard played right field in ' 48 for the varsity team. Jerry Cameron— This returning letterman played first base for the varsity team and was the leading batter of the city league in ' 48 with an average of .400. He went out for the 880 and mile and also ran the mile at the state meet. Neil Cochran— Went out for the 880 and also ran the 880 at the state meet. Merle Haffner— This man represented Lewis and Clark in both the high and low hurdles. Don Runner-This track man is looked upon to be one of the top L. C. 440 men in the ' 49 season. This was the first time since 1943 that a team has gone through a season undefeated in the Spokane high school leagues. With this record the Tigers left all competition far behind as Rogers, North Central, and Gonzaga all tied for second place with a record of four wins and four losses and West Valley toiled the league without winning a game. He distinguished himself by his de- pendable performance and provided back-board strength for the second squad. Jerry Cameron- This speedy guard rounded out the powerful starting line-up and showed exceptionally smooth floor work. Kim Jack— This lanky forward scored well for L.C. and added back-board strength to the Bengal five. Kim ' s unorthodox but accurate lay-ins and hook shots proved a nightmare to opposing play. Dick Ager— This capable senior gave speed to the second team. Dick ' s fine one-honded pushers and driving lay-ins scored more than once. Bill was the outstanding ball hawk in the city. His dead eye, one-handed push shot also brought in points galore. Bill Mather (Captain)— This four-year letterman was a high scorer for L.C. as well as a tower of strength on defense. A cool veteran. Bill was always best when the pressure was on. Hartley Mouse Kruger— This 6 foot 7 inch center provided top back-board strength for L.C. Possessor of a stylish hook shot and a tip-in artist, he was a high scorer on the top five.
