He was succeeded in the fall of '16 by Helen Hart, who was able to gain for jg. the class a prominent place in school affairs. NVith the help of many live Ri' wires in the class a party was held in the school cafeteria, which proved l completely successful in bringing the class together. john Cadigan, who QV had been prominent all through high school as class yell leader, became president during'the Sophomore year and continued in that office until Il? the spring of 1919, when Ray Dean was elected to steer the class, now 3 Senior B's. He captained the IQI8 football team and was a player on 'IJQN the 1919 one which defeated North Central 6-0. The name of Burdette Q4 Fischer, who kicked the two goals in that memorable game, will long be remembered in Lewis and Clark. Earl Tilton's star playing was a fea ture of that game, as was also the work of Ed Smith, the biggest little ffl player on the team. In the fall of 1919 Ray Dean again headed the 'fi' class, everything for the success of the class. FIT MAGNUS GEMITUS Ed Smith Paul Sauder.: THE evening of September 23, IQ4.2, we were casually .3?c,g'ar strolling down the Boulevard de Lewis and Clark, which had grown to be Spokane's richest boulevard. In the heart of the business district at 69th avenue, we perceived a large ily-'iii-1' black book, lying in the center of the street. On the outside were the initials, H. M. H. YVe at once remembered the name of our principal at high school, H. M. Hart, and the happy days we had spent at Lewis and Clark before our graduation with the Class of january. 1920. On opening the book, we found it to be made up of ciippirgs taken from the different newspapers of Spokane. Reading through them, we observed: june 16, 1939- William Joseph Shaw, the artist. has returned from his extended tour abroad, with his model, Maxine Cohn. lt is rumored that they are soon to be married. June, 19.19-Earl Tilton, bartender at Donald QDintyJ Moore's saloon, was killed in a tight with the world's champion cheese eater Lowell Stanley. Al Kuhlman, Stanley's trainer, received injuries which have affected his head. The fight arose over the discussion of whether Th- Ima Doerr was as much taller than Blanche Belden as Vera Thornley was taller than Juanita Kassa. urre 23 - Due to the death of T rancis Cordon Martin Miss Florence McGovern will assume her duties as editor-in-chief of the Spokane Press Miss McGovern has appointed james B. Maclin as printer s devil. Mr Maclin recently distinguished himself by his answer to the bureau 'ot horticulturists. XVhen asked which variety of pine had the lon es sharpest needles he replied the porcupine. June 30 -'- Miss Ethel Toevs was appointed to fill thc position left by Mrs. Grace Kendall as inspector of Public Dance Halls. ' rr-A - . Rosemary Feulner, as Rose kde la Noye, a fascinating French girl who leads many manly hearts astray mffher beauty and Charm, carrkzd her part cleverly. ' Garret Foster known as Paul Souders was the dashing sword- fighting hero who had the audience in laughing suspense when after ac- cepting a glass of brandy from the heroine he nearly sat upon it during the ardent love-making that followed. ' Hst! The villain john Margeson proved to be as-Y deceitful and cowardly as the audience could wish for. Fred Bethel took this part and deserves praise for his able characterization for who wants to be a villain? Ed Smith took the part of Philippe brother of Rose de la Noye and proved to be an obliging and courageous brother. Miriam Chiilingsley played by Cecil Gregg was the deluded ad- mirer of john Margeson but everything ended well with Miriam in Philippe s arms. john Cadigan as Captain Miles Standish ruled the colony sternly and well and admitted himself to be an able Indian hghter Helen Hart as Barbara was the meek and loving wife of the brave Captain Standish Aunt Resolute as portrayed by Martha Turner was strong in noun selmg the young but morbidly afraid of the Indiars Her part was we taken Miss Lois Dart dramatic, coach again proved her ability by natural ness with which the play vsas put on and the polish of the actors Stage appontments were perfect and the stage settings typical to the period Flor nce McGovern was property manager Maxey Maughan bus1 ness manager Bert Farley stage manager and Josephine Perkins ward robe mistress 1 7 1 fl JI , fl I ! J 7 D 7 - i JANUARY '20 .15 Lewis and Clark 6 NorthiCentral O ' ATURDAY November 22 IQIQ the 'Tigers won their second VL game from North Central the first for sik years by a score 'J of -.J O . 1 ' The day dawned bright and clear and what little snow there had been had melted leaving the ground clear and haitd. The grandstand filled early with a great show of color and anything that could produce noise added to the din. The Red and Black team entered the field first and was greeted with a great cheer a second later the Orange and Black trotted out upon the field amid a great howl and honking of horns. Both teams were sure of victory although tht dope favored the North Siders for the W. q. C. Freshmen had defeated North Central 6 to o which they had easily defeated the Tigers 42 to o. Also the old time rix als at Walla W'alla were downed 7 to O by North Central and 7 to 6 by the Orange and Black. Betting was heavy and odds favored our friends across the river. Nevertheless every Lewis and Clark student knew that the team would fight and felt sure of vic- tory. The game started promptly at 2:30 when Fischer kicked off to McMasters. From then ,on it wast rftarly an even battle up and down the field with very small gains. For the first time it was seen that the Tiger line could and would hold. From then on it became a kicking duel until the end of the first half. The second half began when North Central kicked off to Tilton and it was here the battle began, for fthe Orange and Black had a determination to Wm The st.sio'Q,'came when Fischer kicked a field goal from the 40tyard line. 'IT wasthen tfmt the Lewis and Clark bleachers went wild and did not cool down the rest of the game A few minutes later Fischer kicked another field goal, making the score 6 to 0 The rest of the game was scoreless and Lewis and Clark left the field winners the first time in sri: years. Fischer and Tilton the speedy Lewis and Clark backs vi ere the shining lights of the Tiger backiield while Humes Smythe and Weaver the husky linemen, played a great game on the line Hanley a new man on the North Cen- tral team starred on account of his ability to run through a broken field. No particular stars could be picked however as every one played a top notch brand of ball Skaaden at the helm ran the team like a veteran. Beneke went like a demon until he was forced out with a broken shoul- der as did E Morrison who replaced him Morrison. was severely in- jured and carried from thg field as was Tower who replaced him. MCIHHIS Finished t amefin great style at that position. The plays by the backfield were made possible by the lmemen Humes, VV.altl1ers, VVeaver Smythe Rickert and Smith At ends M Morrison, R.
