Mr. Lloyd Lee is educator, confidant and advisor to his students. The old adage, Ask and you shall receive, is personihed by Mr. Lee, who is always available to all students of Lewis college. The only satisfaction he receives is the knowledge that he has helped someone. His character, ideals, and accomplishments are an inspiration to those who are priviledged to know him. It is Fitting that this yearbook is being dedicated to Mr. Lee, With the publication of this year's Beacon the future of Lewis looks bright. Mr. Lee has always advocated the fullhllment of his dream -- a dream of great days in the future. With the presence of Mr. Lee on Lewis' campus this dream will become a reality. To Mr. Lloyd Lee this edition of the Beacon is dedicated with the hope that it will serve, in the years to come, as a reminder of the appreciation of a grateful student body. 4 . ., V. . The administra- tion of the college is now in the capable hands of the Christian Brothers, who are finishing the foundation laid down by the previous administration. In their first year at Lewis the Brothers have influenced the life of eveiy member of the Student Body. The Brothers have already mapped out the future of the college. An extensive building program in under way, which will increase the facilities of the college. In their experienced hands Lewis College may look forward to an ever brightening future. The staff of the Beacon along with the Student Body would like to extend a hearty welcome to the Brothers along with the best wishes for the future. W' M' ' aff ew f Brother L Raymond F.S.C. Lewis Poet's Works to Be - 0' o On Exhibit An exhibition of the works of Scharmel Iris, poet-in-residence at Lewis College, is being spon- sored by the Chicago Public Li- brary at the Legler Regional branch during the month of No- vember. In addition to Iris' three volumes of poems, the original portrait in sanguine that Augustus John made of him in London during the summer of 1955 is being displayed. John, the painter of Yeats and Joyce, is a favorite artist of the royal family. In 1955 Iris was presented to Queen Elizabeth, Princess Mar- garet, and the Queen Mother by Winston Churchill. At the time the fine art book of 52 drawings, Augustus John, appeared, Mrs. Eleanor Roose- velt wrote in her column of March 8, 1958, It is interesting that a poet in this country who has had. such a hard time to gain recognition should be the one American included in these drawings, and went on to say, Many publishers have recog- nized the force of Mr. Iris' writ- ings, but it is not easy to over- come the general apathy about poetry today. She had expressed a desire to meet Mr. Iris on her visit to Joliet and to wish him success on his autobiography, Shuttle- cock, -now close to completion. Carl Sandberg referred to Iris as, a genius in the lyric field. Nobel prize winner, William B. Yeats, in the preface to his sec- ond book on verse wrote: Of poets writing today, there is none greater. SCHARMEL IRIS, POET-IN-RESIDENCE THE JUST MAN Bom of misfortune in an evil time Devoid of logic, reason, or sweet rhyme, Unloved as were the wild dogs of the town, Misused of life he did not froth nor frown On the aggressorg mock his dire fate That mocked him verily. To compensate, Wild roses of the wayside made him glad Enough to thank his God for what he had: Birdsong and folk song and meadow Hower, The peace of stars that fills the quiet hour. He struggled towards the light but always fell. His, his the crown because he labored well. In death he triumphed, gained his rightful place - The signature of God across his face. JOLIET, ILL. You're the CLASS of bl We wish you luck in whatever field of endeavor you plan to follow . . . that's about the gist of it. But we'd like to go a step further. Some people feel that the more college graduates we have the better. You and I know better. So much depends on who is teaching and what is being taught. As a graduate of Lewis you have learned how to think clearly. . . you have learned how to weigh new ideas carefully before accepting them. You're not necessarily a storehouse of knowledge and information but you did learn a technique in that you do know how to acquire knowledge in a diversity of fields. You weren't iust trained in a technical skill nor was the operation of a machine your ultimate obiective. You are a well rounded man . . . you have a liberal education and you have the vision to see beyond your everyday problems. You have great aspirations and you know that one of the most important iobs ahead of you is serving humanity where you are able to do so. And finally, as a truly rounded Lewis College graduate you have learned two of the greatest lessons of all: knowing God and your fellowman. All these things you have learned at Lewis College . . . and all these things spell man, Let's go on in life and live your life in full. Yes, you're a college graduate now . . . but it's only the beginning in this wonderful game called life. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE I96l LEWIS COLLEGE GRADUATES!
