CLASS REUNIO 1964 by ADELAIDE ATKINS As I boarded the T W A Arrlrnes to Hy to Bob Maedlers class reunron at hrs estate rn Cuba I saw many famrlrar and smrlrng faces Elaine Barrnger the arrlrne hostess made us all comfortable She told me she was takrng a long needed vacatron to Join us rn Cuba just as I was srttrng rn my seat cameras clrcked and I saw a group of reporters gathering around a famrlrar young lady It was Ann Smrth recently elected Cover Girl of I964 It seems that Ann can t go anywhere and not be front page news' The warning lrght flashed and just as the motor warmed up jimmy Warrrngton followed by Edward Mrllman entered the compartment We all cheered rmmy for hrs recent electron as Presrdent of the Unrted States Edward had been such a marvelous policeman that he advanced to the Secret Servrce He was to corn a phrase Krll mg two brrds wrth one stone by guarding jimmy and attendrng the reunron I was telling Lucy Lowe who travels for World Book Encyclopedia about my new ranch house designed by the famous Interror Decorator Mrs George Sweeny Pat Dodd, when a loud vorce drowned us out Remember all the fun we had rn Englrsh class with Tom D1rks3 Well Tom made the most of hrs abrlrty to delrver a speech and is now traveling for the government dorng just Ural' Tom was havrng a frrendly quarrel with a rather plump man Delaware I went to get some water for Tom and bumped rnto Drana anney bent over a Irmp figure I helped her lift the person and 'aw that rt was Robert Wayland Hall Judge of Municipal Court rn Washing ton After laughing wrth Bob over hrs arr srckness Drana told me she was just back from Pans where she had been studyrng brarn surgery While we were talking I notrced a young man looking out the wmdow and then at a map of South Amerrca I had my sus prcrons and after askrng Diana I was sure There was Alex off rn a corner mrssrng all the fun' Very unusual for hrm and so we decrded to find out the cause Wrth a red face he rnformed us that hrs brrde to be lrved wrthrn five mrles of Bob s estate' Lynn Crrsp Joined us rn offering congratulations to Alex and then rn vrted us to Join hrm for lunch While we were eatrng Lynn told us that hrs entrre lncome was from the stocks and bonds he had invested After lunch I de crded to roam the plane and ran rnto someone hrdrng rn the baggage car Page Melson A W O I.. agarn' Although a successful busrnessman at the time of our reunron Page was supposed to be rn Texas with the Marrne Reserves I promised hrm I wouldn t mentron hrs berng there and went back to the marn compart ment to chat awhrle I drdn t realrze how trred I was and I dozed off When I awakened we had landed rn Cuba not far from Bob s estate As we left the plane I notrced a crazy actrng arrplane crrclrng above us and dorng flrps Two cars had come to meet us Bob rn one and of all people Clara Wrlson rn the one I rode rn' I hadn t heard from Clara rn years and as we rode to the estate we passed her famous horse ranch She took due prrde rn telling me about the rare thorough breds from all over the world on her ranch I was so interested that we were at Bob s before I knew rt The vrew from the hrll as we approached was Irke a parntrng At thrs moment the swrmmrng pool looked partrcu larly rnvrtrng and so I hurrredly changed rnto a surt As everyone else had the same rdea I had a chance to talk to some of my classmates I hadn t seen yet Brll Wrlson was the first person I saw as he wasn t swrm mrng but talkrng wrth two young men whom I recog nrzed as Wrllram Hurdle and Fred Barley I could tell by Brll Wrlson s clothing that he was a mrnrster but drdn t realrze he was a mrssronary Brll told me he was en route to Afrrca when he recerved hrs rnvrtatron to the reunron I learned from Brll Hurdle that he was the owner of a group of farms rn the states Our peace and solrtude was broken by that same crazy arrplane I had notrced at the arrport My attentron wandered as I notrced a long sleek custom car glrde up the drrve The chauffeur got out and opened the door for Mike Hill' I assume you know that Mrchael rs the Admiral us had seen hrm We were talking over old times with Fred Barley when a famrlrar young man rnterrupted us to congratulate Mrke Robert Dorman owner of a very large and successful explosrves factory' Fred rs selling Bob s product rn hrs charn of Variety Stores and they had a lot to talk about It was getting rather late and most of us were beginning to drift rn the house when that arrplane came back agarn Thrs trme some one could be seen wavrng at us and I thought I recog nrzed who rt was When I saw rt land qurte a drstance away I went for Corky Webb Corky has a fabulous collectron of custom cars that he makes addrtrons and improvements on I knew rf anyone could get over that field rn a car rt would be Corky Without a word to anyone we hopped rnto hrs aguar and rode out to the plane I was rrght' It was Sandra late enough to mrss her connections as usual It seems that she was late getting to the arrport and had to Hy down rn her own plane Sandy had recently been married to the Tobacco Krng of the U S and was strll a newlywed On the way back to the house I saw Donald Dorman begrnnrng to say grace Then I realized that we were all there and our reunron was complete What a won derful experience to see all your old classmates agarn' After supper as we all sang our class song I decrded to wrrte a story of our reunron If any of you ever have the opportunrty to have a reunron take advantage of rt' whom I recognized as William Ash, Governor of of the U. S. Navy, and it has been years since any of . . J , . I , . . ' . . . . , . - , . . .I I7
