A day before the Christmas vacation, carols were sung in the school corridors by the Chorus. They also livened many assemblies by singing appropriate songs. A con- cert for the P. T. A. was held in May in which the Chorus took part. One third of the members of the Chorus represented our school in the Sussex County Chorus. They were Bill Crisp, Bob Short, Janey Ingram, Faye Steele, Mary Frances Omwake, Jay Rowland, ,Iarmon Ingram, Sara Dorman, Alice Hess, ,Ioan Tharp, Douglas Roberts, Carl Walls, and Nancy Ward. From these people, Alice Hess, Sara Dorman, and Douglas Roberts were chosen for State Chorus. This has been the best representation from Lewes High for many years. .arg-13, LQ X ' A ' 53,142 - 'iii 1, f3lQivA 7 Mfg? The first of these was the selling of General Association Tickets. Since a number of dances were included with these tickets, they were the sponsors of many successful dances. For more school spirit, the Student Council sponsored a pep rally and parade in honor of the football team. The seating arrangement for elementary and high school was again made for the use of assem- blies in the auditorium. For the students' benefit, the Student Council had a movie on the National Student Council and a debate as assemblies. As an entirely new project, a Student Government Day was organized in which the Senior Class took charge of the school for a day. Their fourth annual presidential election was held in May with its usual rivalry. The Student Council enjoyed the monthly meetings with the Sussex County Student Council since the president of this organization was its own president, Bob Short, of whom they are very proud. Lynch The Driver Education class is again organized with thirty-one students under the direction of Mr. Lynch. The class meets weekly and covers nine units of study. They are: QD Orientation, Q25 The Driver Physical and Mental Qualifications, Q39 Rules of the Road, Q43 Motor Vehicle Construction, Q55 Learning To Drive, Q69 Driving Skills, Q71 Maintaining Your Car, Q81 The Pedestrian and the Bicyclist, Q93 and Accidents and the Safety Movement. Each student is given individual instructions behind the wheel for at least four hours. ln this phase of the work, we attempt to develop two major concepts, namely safety con- sciousness and a sane driver attitude. The youth can learn and, once having learned the lessons of safety, can teach by precept and example. A generation of well-trained drivers is all that we need to conquer the great killer, Driver Carelessnessf' and here's hoping that the students of the course will not fail to utilize the lessons learned. Mr. Georgiana, Mr. Hanley A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM On August 25th, football practice started for the rough and ready boys of L. H. S. The two coaches, Mr. Hanley and Mr. Georgiana, did a splendid job of preparing the team for the encounter against Georgetown. Not only this game but all those that followed were victories for the top eleven of the state. Even though Tom Marshall and Larry Knapp were elected by their teammates as co-captains, the other seniors had the opportunity to be co-captains for a game. The team was the only undefeated team in the state, an honor we all fully appreciate. Sam Paynter and .lim Brittingham were selected on the all-state team. Schedule Lewes. . . ,.,. BASKETBALL Coach-Mr. Georgiana To make a good varsity team, the players must have a good background of long and hard practice. This is the goal that the Junior Varsity players are trying to attain under the leadership of Mr. Georgiana. They ended the season with a total of nine games of which they won five and lost four. This proves these boys will fill the varsity places next year very capably.
