September twenty-eight skeptical children entered the door of their first grade roomesome eager for the adventure and others not so sure of this new venture called education During the year a few of our classmates moved away and we reoenved a few new friends from other schools Learning to work and play together was our first major task Prmtmg our names was one of our new experiences Soon we were amazed to Fund ourselves reading Oh the thrill of takxng our first book home to prove to our parents that we could read just like bug people Srnce that time we have read many books and had varied experiences through our stories In our social studies we spent the first half of the year talking about the home the family and the school During the remamder of the year we studied about our communlty helpers how they hel us and others We have acquired qulte a conception of numbers through our room store It was fun to be both the store keeper and the buyer to make change and to pay for I. 37 I FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADES FIRST GRADE Mrs. Wells It was a lively group of boys and girls that entered the first grade in September. There were I7 boys and I4 girls in our room the hrst day. Two of our classmates moved away, Doris Donovan from Georgetown joined our group. Sitting still and playing nicely together are among the many things we learn during the first weeks of school. We are always proud to start in our readers, but the big day is when we take them home for the first time to read to the family. We have learned to count and write our numbers to I00 by l, 5, and IO. We are now working on our addition and subtraction combinations to ten. The Homeroom Mothers have given us very nice parties during the year. We have enjoyed all the nice things they did for us. We look forward to Friday mornings: that is the time Miss Reinert comes in to teach us something new in art. It has been fun working with crayons, water colors, colored chalk and finger paint. We have learned many songs, singing games, and we skip and march to music. Our attendance was very good until we had an epi- demic of measles. SECOND GRADE Mrs. Phillips By Hester Donovan We began the year with twenty-six pupils, sixteen boys and ten girls. In October Eva Rose Cashwell left us to go to Florida. -lane Ingram came to us from Salis- bury in january. joey Fournier left in March to travel all the way to japan to be with his daddy who is in the Army. The boys and girls enjoyed watching the antics of their new pet hamster. They took turns cleaning out his cage and feeding him. They also liked to observe the animal and plant life in their aquarium. They visited some of the places of interest in Lewes, among them the Post Office and the Zwaanendael House. The children were proud of their weekly newspaper the Gay City News, lt helped them a great deal to com- pose articles for the paper. They organized a little town in the room with a mayor, a secretary and four commissioners. These six officers were changed weekly by a class election. The mayor appointed other helpers to aid in the work about the room. This enabled the boys and girls to practice democratic living in a small way. SECOND GRADE Mrs. Mildred Drazen By Hester Donovan Finally the big day arrived on September I3, I949, and now we were second graders who had just Finished enjoying our first summer vacation. There were twenty-four of us on that day and since then four of our friends have moved and five new friends have enrolled. It was hard for some of us to get back into the old routine of school, but as the leaves began to fall, so we got to know each other better and settle down. Some of us found that school was almost as much fun as summer vacation. We have studied about Indians, Pilgrims, Eskimos, and community helpers. It has been fun building a teepee and a valentine post office, Some of us found that if we did not address a valentine correctly it went into the dead letter box and was not delivered during our valentine party. Some of us have become observant scientists.
