11 VIKING FOR A DAY. Dana Carter, se¬ nior, awaits entrance to the castle. Seniors play-act Mdknl Christmas tudying Shake- speare didn ' t have to be all grind and groan. Playing parts of favorite characters was a gas and resurrected Old Willi again. Seniors in Janet Sefton ' s En¬ glish IV classes thought they ' d en¬ joy a Medieval Christmas so they tied their study of Macbeth to that of the holiday and came up with Christmas at the Castle. Everyone in Sefton ' s English classes received an invite. Mac¬ beth and Lady Macbeth were to be the host and hostess. King Duncan, his sons Malcolm and Do- naldbain, Banquo and Macduff were all invited. Senior Sean Johnson who had come as a monk even stitched his own cos¬ tume. Some uninvited guests who had sneaked past the palace guards into the Mead Hall had come, also — the likes of three witches, Hecate, and an execu- laying parts of favorite characters was a gas and resurrected ’Old Willie’ again.” tioner. Senior Marcia Mister confid- ed, Well, I had this witch hat at home so .... As soon as everyone was seated according to rank, the banquet began. Lord and Lady Macbeth gave the yuletide toast. The castle ' s serfs carried trays of ladden fare from the cas-l tie kitchen and served the guests on tables decorated with ever¬ green boughs and candlelight. Even “Old Willie himself was there to read the Ye Olde Wills, ' ' as carolers sang in the back¬ ground. When the class period end! ed, reluctantly, so did the ban¬ quet. Yearbook last hurrah unplugs 20 -QUILL BLADE two years. No book would be produced for the classes of 1988 or 1989. The ensuing fall term would ay it was the straw that broke the ca- mel ' s back. Say the heat had reached the melt down point. Call it what you might — to those closest to the nagging sore, the LW year¬ book was on its last leg and had had it, pure and simple. The dogs of doom had caught wind of the final bloodlet¬ ting and were hot for the kill. To outsiders, the yearbook ' s plagu¬ ing problems were sloughed off as just another late book. But to those in the know, the death of the journalism program had become a waiting game and simply a matter of time. Despite the sometimes inge¬ nious bandaids and heroic efforts of many of the staffers, in the end nothing made much difference. Bluntly put, there were too many holes in the dike to plug and no one had really cared enough or done enough — neither the high- COLD AND Station doesn ' t spoil the staffers. Meaningful journalism reform would again be stalled and diverted. Quill Blade would be¬ come a Chapter 13 statistic. This yearbook advisor would be about ready to toss in the towel. Yet, sometimes some things couldn ' t be destroyed, despite the spoilers. Energy, resiliency, talent, and idealism could not be institutionally wasted and would come to grow again. In the next saga two years later, the story ' s sequel would deal with the onslaught of North Central and the coming of Princi¬ pal Elton Mathews. □ commentary by jass.
