ROTC The purpose of the ROTC is to es tablish the foundation for active citizenship and to provide basic military training. The Lew Wallace ROTC was formed in 1942 and has been part of the curriculum ever since. In the past twenty-six years, the unit has been awarded many trophies for outstanding achieve¬ ments. During the three-year course students learn about leadership, drill, weapons, first aid, tactics, and American military history. 87 Jim Ritchie sets up another lamp for display . DECA DECA, the Distributive Education Clubs of America, presents a program of learning while receiving on-the-job training. The entire course takes two years. Juniors receive instruction at school for one credit, and seniors earn three credits for the year one of which is for on-the-job training. Mr. Peters instructs classes in merchan¬ dising, retailing, and salesmanship. Officers are: Tim Favia, Vice President; Chuck Hoftey, President; Mary Galindo, Secretary; and Jim Ritchie, T reasurer. By selling magazines and candy, members of the band were able to raise enough money to E urchase new uniforms. Orchestra members won rst place in both the district and state music contests. To top the year’s activities the band and the orchestra combined to present their Spring Concert. After sizzling summer practice, the Martin Marauders faced tneir first foe, Valpo, whom they battled to a 13-12 loss. Seeking their first win, the Hornets met Froebel and won the scoring contest 39-25. Martin’s men then faced rival, Horace Mann, in a hard-fought homecoming loss, 20-0. A fired up team hurled a victory over Emmerson with Tom Harris scoring touchdowns. Undefeated Hobart was next in line for the Hornets. The game was played well by both teams, but Hobart came out ahead 7-6. Highly ranked Andrean, the gridders’ biggest rival, hand¬ ed our team another one point loss in one of our closest games, 13-12. The Hornet defense, led by captains Mike Milich, DaveCooper, and Bob Buha, held Andrean to their second lowest scoring game. At a muddy Gilroy field, the Tolleston team was handed a 27-13 loss by the underdog Hornets. Roosevelt was the Hornets’ next opponent. On a wet, windy night Coach Martin led nis team to a 13-6 win. In the last game of the season Crown Point was defeated 19-0 by the Wallace gridmen. Tom Harris, fullback, was the high scorer of the year with 74 points. Other outstanding players were guards, Andy Zdobylak and Jim Mandon, halfbacks, John Sikora and Jim Eloff, and tackle Tom Galovic. The Hornets were hampered by the early season loss of Bill Slama, halfback, who made a good recovery but was still unable to play. 93 Rough going up the middle. Freshmen Gain Experience Coach Irv Elser coached his freshmen grid team to a respectable 4 win, 2 loss record. One of the high points of the season was beating Anderson. The freshmen team lost the city championship to Pulaski in a hard fought battle. This year ex¬ perience will be the foundation of the varsity teams of the future. Dropping only one match, that one to Gary Wirt, the netters, lead by Goad and John¬ son, had another brilliant season. Goad and John¬ son again displayed their skill in their performance at sectionals. All in all it was a great year for the Wallace netmen. Rusty Goad serves up a victory. Bob Rodriguez consults Coach Troy. Harriers Hustle Four Wins Winning only 4 duos must have been disap¬ pointing for the young squad, finishing fifth in the city. Despite the fine running of Frudakis and Scnaffer, the record was due mainly to lack of experience. In the future, however this group should mature to a leading contender for city honors. Varsity Basketball A four and sixteen season would seem like a failure to many, but to the young men who gained experience and status, as well as notching four victories, it was a success. With only two seniors on a squad of eleven, the Hornets found them¬ selves giving up experience and heighth in the lineup. Despite this, the Hornets were likely to catch fire, and when they were hot, they could beat the best. Our season opened with a game against first seeded E. C. Roosevelt. The rebounding and shooting of Jim Bradley prevailed over our “four comer delay” offense and we lost. Three games later our superior board work and the shooting of Rich Svihra brought our first victory. Later in the season, Coach Kukoy went to Ken Vandersteen to preserve a victory against Hammond Morton, our second victory. We went two for two to end the season before losing to Mann in the sectionals. Our third victory was a result of breaking Ho¬ bart’s controlled offense and team balance. Our final victory was attributed to Denny McDowell’s 105 defensive ability, not to mention the effort turned in by Pat Duggan and Frank Bumbales in defeat¬ ing River Forest. Our fifth victory wasn’t in points but in stature. We intimidated a taller, older, and faster team, Gary Froebel, by staying with point for point for four quarters before succumbing in the overtime. With nine returning for varsity and the remain¬ ing positions being filled by the successful Junior Varsity players, there is an indication that per¬ haps sacrificing one four and sixteen season will bring us a basketball dynasty. ... and Sometimes Winning. Freshman Basketball Coach Ward’s freshman cagers compiled a 13-8 record, the best of all winter sports teams. To add to their success, they netted a third in the Calumet Invitational Tourney and a second in the Citv Tourney bowing to Beckman. The starting six for the frosh were J. Allen, B. Darter, R. Rowe, O. Jackson, K. Bumbales, and D. McAdams. Go Fight Win Freshman basketball players are: (back row) R. Dickerson , K. Bumbales , R. Adank , O. Jackson , D. Bolds , H. Gould , D. McAdams , B. The retirement of Coach Polizotto sent Coach Kukov up to var¬ sity and left the reserve duties to Mike Jennings. Coach Jennings took the job and guided the team to its successful finish in years. The high point of the season for the players was playing before five thousand people in the final game of the Reserve Tourney at Memorial Audi¬ torium. Coach Jennings had reason to be proud of “Moose” Harvey ana Ilan Crittendon, who will probably move up to varsity next year, and Joe Djokic and Allen Blackman, two fast-improving sophomores. Other scores were against Horace Mann, 35-10, and Hammond High, 52-3. Mike Mussallem finished the season witn a 1-10 record. Jack Walker with a 3-5 record, and Dave Watkins with a 3-7. Tne mer¬ men who had been city champs for six straight years were finally dethroned by the Horace Mann team. All in all, the team’s accomplishments for the 68 69 season came out to be a disappointing four wins eight losses record. The season aid have its bright moments such as the breaking of the city record for the four hundred yard freestyle relay. And so another routine day of school pro¬ gresses. No matter how routine and sometimes dull school life may be, the four years spent in high school prove to be an important time of learning, respecting, thinking, and molding. So important, that the aays are represented and recalled each year in a book of memories—fond remembrances of close friends, good times, and worthwhile study. A yearbook is a combination of the talents, ideas, and cooperation of many people. Hours of hard work have been devoted oy many to present a yearbook of fine quality and creative ideas. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the following people who have made the 1969 Quill and Blade possible: to the staff, for their cooperation and determination; my special thanks to Karin Opacich for the extra¬ ordinary amount of time and work which she de¬ voted unselfishly to the book; to Dale Giolas for his assistance and dependability with photog¬ raphy; to Mr. John Giolas for his cooperation and understanding; to Mr. Richard O’Curran, our Irish leprechaun, for his assistance, encourage¬ ment, and sense of humor. Thanks also to Collins Furniture Store, the office staff and administra¬ tion, the students and faculty, and Linda Jones, Vicky Kappas, and Georgene Terzes for their assistance with the copy. 202
