His better than straight A average index, 4.3553 was achieved by taking such advanced courses as Advanced Placement History, Math, English and Science. During his Senior year, Sid was a National Merit Scholarship finalist, he received an English award, a chemistry award, a history award and the Bausch-Lomb award. Sid has participated in such after school activities as Biology Club, Radio Club, Boys’ Club, Joe Berg Advanced Study Seminar, B’nai B’rith Youth Organ ization, Latin Club, and Concert Orchestra. He was also on the Fresh¬ man Basketball team. Serving as a Student Council Representative is also among his activities. This fall Sid will attend Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michi¬ gan. He will be attending on a Michigan State Merit Scholarship. His proba¬ ble major will be Pre-law and he hopes to become a lawyer. salutatorian Linda Lesniak ranked second with an index of 4.3230. Throughout her school years at Wallace, she has received many achieve¬ ments including an English award her freshmen and junior year and a math award her junior year. She received a letter of commendation from the Na¬ tional Merit Scholarship Program for her score on the test taken in November ’65. F.T.A., French Club, Inkpots, Junior and Senior Honor Society and the Jr. Prom Committee were some of Linda’s extracurricular activities. She also served as Junior Vice President and Senior President of Girls’ Club. Listed among Linda’s favorites are the song “Monday, Monday”, by the Mamas and the Papas, modern literature, winter dancing, big cities, English clothing and English music. Linda’s future plans include majoring in elementary education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. 28 class of 1966 With the elections of our officers, Joel Slosar—president, Mickey Rigotti— vice-president, Carolyn Mallars—secretary, and John Minarich—treasurer, we began our last year. Academically, we were exposed to widely varied fields. In our Civics and Economics classes we studied the complexities of the country’s governmental and economic systems. Trigonometry and physics completed our studies in advanced math and science, while second year studies in business courses prepared us for competition in the business world. In English, we studied the works of Shakespeare and Chaucer in Macbeth and the Canterbury Tales. We discussed the human mind and behavior in Psychology. This year, the girls reversed their freshman year for now they were Big Sisters. Homecoming rolled by and witnessed many smiles, screams, tears with the crowning of Susan Plinovich as our Queen. The paper drive, light bulb sale, the Senior-Faculty Basketball Game, our heated prom meetings, and the Senior Reception were some of the things we did together. Never will we forget “Silver Bells,” the Inaugural Ball, our friendly Saturday night “get-togethers,” Mac’s after the game, the Clock after Homecoming, the Oddfellows Club in Hobart with the Basooties playing “Gloria,” nor the lack of bands at our school dances. Still the big moment was yet to come. As we ordered our calling cards and invitations and were measured for our caps and gowns we were actually seniors and the big day was not far off. Among the activities leading up to graduation were Activity Day, Senior Luncheon and Baccalaureate services. Who could ever forget the magic of the night of May 13, the Senior Prom, the Post Prom, and the fun-filled day afterwards. On June 3rd, we watched our classmates receive their diplomas and lis¬ tened to the addresses of Sid Spector, our Valedictorian and Linda Lesniak, our Salutatorian. As we walked across the stage, we began to look to the future and what it holds for us with confidence and we knew that we must now face a world of greater dimensions than we have known. Most of us felt the loss of John Minarich personally. He represented many things to all of his friends. To many of the boys, he was a fellow teammate in basketball, football or baseball. He knew our victories and felt our defeats. Some people knew him as a student in the classroom or as a leader of his class. To others, he was a friend when we needed one the most; he was always there to listen to our problems. John was a person to admire and respect in every way possible. He was as proud of our school as it is of him. For the many times he gave of himself to his school and the students, he shall be well remembered. The council is composed of eight representatives (four girls and four boys) from each grade level, four members-at-large and the four main officers. TTiese students attend meetings twice a month to discuss and correct problems of our student body. The Student Council’s list of activities is quite long. Homecoming is one of the biggest items on its annual agenda. It is up to the Student Council to see that everything runs smoothly from the time the senior class selects the five candidates until the last person leaves the stag dance after the game. A major social activity is the annual Inaugural Ball. This is the first major semi-formal dance of the year. This year the dance, Silver Bells, was decorated in that “good old-fashioned Christmas” style. Other activities sponsored by the Student Council are student elections, student officer in¬ auguration, Christmas baskets, the school calen¬ dar, Teachers’ Appreciation Banquet and the S.O.S. Humanity Drive. Freshman-Sophomore Activity Day, Junior-Senior Activity Day, after school stag dances. Student Tutoring Service, sale of game tickets, concession management, sym¬ pathy cards and flowers are also part of the Stu¬ dent Council Program. Mr. Pieroni and Mr. Orlich, club sponsors, aid the council members in the promotion of school ideals and student life. 56 Teachers Appreciation Banquet Inauguration Inaugural Ball March of Dimes 57 Frosh Week girls’ club I Rich Croll helps decorate for the annual toumabout. One of the service projects is the Faculty Teas. Every other Thursday, many of our weary teach¬ ers could be found sipping tea, eating cookies and relaxing in 7M while girls from selected home¬ rooms prepared and served the tea, served the of¬ fice staff and washed dishes. Freshman Week, at the beginning of the school year proved to be very successful. This event helped the new freshmen to feel more at home here at Lew Wallace and gave their mothers a taste of modern high school life. Seniors and freshmen assembled in the main gym to track down the holder of their matching sock. After all orphans had been claimed or adopted, everyone sat down to enjoy the mouth-watering box lunches which the “Big Sisters” had enthusiasti¬ cally labored to prepare. As the week progressed, seniors were hounded for their autographs and mothers enjoyed tea with their daughters after school in the cafeteria. The annual turnabout was held in November for the first time. Girls spent many nights after school working on the murals which carried out the theme of “Harvest Moon.” Com stalks and autumn colors decorated the gym and the Blue Tones provided the music. During Christmas vacation, the girls visited the Lake County Convalescent Home and cheered the patients by singing Christmas carols. Seniors were honored at the Senior Reception which was also sponsored by Girls’ Club. Tea and cookies were donated by underclassmen and en¬ tertainment was provided by fellow students. April 19 brought about the Birthday Potluck which was actually a huge birthday party for everyone who attended. Girls wore party hats, ate birthday cake and sang a song representing their birthday months. All activities are under the supervision of their sponsors. Miss Kouvelas and Miss Novak. Faculty Tea Mother-Daughter Tea fta To be faced with the responsibility of teaching, one must be able to adjust to the problems in¬ volved. They must try to become acquainted with their chosen vocation. Future Teachers of Amer¬ ica has based itself on these terms. Many worth¬ while projects have been orgamzed in order to cultivate the qualities essential in a good teacher, and to foster the development of student leader¬ ship. Students who wish to enter the field of teaching will find this club a helpful asset in furthering their plans. With the guidance of Miss Olive Leskow and Mrs. Jean Wolverton, this club can promote stu¬ dent goals in teaching. Meeting Michele Stepanovich, jr. veep, and 1st veep, of Ind. F.T.A. To encourage and practice high ethical stand¬ ards in business, and provide for an intelligent choice of occupations are only a few of the rea¬ sons the Distributive Education classes were formed. The club is based on the principles of creating in each member an abiding interest in his chosen profession. Students enrolled in this half day course de¬ velop a respect for education in marketing and distribution which will contribute to their voca¬ tional competence. The sponsor, Mr. Michael Vietti, has helped them promote an understanding and appreciation of the responsibilities of citizenship in our free, competitive system of enterprise. deca Wally Kirkilewski. pres., at Frank’s. 61 The name Pica is defined in Webster’s diction¬ ary as “a size of type, used as a standard of measurement in printing.” At every home football or basketball game, everyone receives, at no charge, one of the best programs in Gary. This service is one of the many performed by the Lew Wallace Pica Club. Printing programs, tickets for most of the dances, signs and posters is done by the members of this club. Not only do they do all of this for Lew Wallace, but they also do other jobs for various schools. With the experience gained from working on so many in-school and out-of-school projects, club members can truly say they have learned and ex¬ perienced some of the problems and rewards of working with the presses. This year, the print shop acquired a new ma¬ chine, which soon became the favorite of Bruce Gispanski. As shown in the pictures, Bruce worked with “his” new machine nearly everyday. Mr. Mrak, known to the boys as “Chief”, is the sponsor of the Pica Club. Setting type in the typestick 62 Doug Watkins checks the camera. Girls interested in donning their spotless white outfits and spending their days and o r nights working for the benefit of mankind are usually found at the Lew Wallace White Caps meetings. Nursing, an occupation which is the goal of the majority of the members of this club, is a job that offers many rewards. Club members show their compassion for other humans by having many service projects during the year. Every Christmas, White Caps members go to an orphanage and assist in bringing the joy of this special holiday into the hearts of lonely children. Los Amigos, the Lew Wallace Spanish Club, has brought about a greater understanding of the language and customs to its members. This was done by con¬ ducting all parts of their meetings in the Spanish lan¬ guage. This year, the club’s initiation was a bit more diffi¬ cult than other years. New members were required to taste a popular Spanish dish. It looked and smelled delicious, but a snail in the shell was found in every portion given to the inductees. Some of the new mem¬ bers agreed that it was quite tasty (?). Mrs. Valle, Spanish teacher, is the club’s sponsor. A member of this club is also given the opportunity to learn more exten¬ sively about Roman customs and civilization. A “Saturnalia” party during the Christmas sea¬ son highlights the club’s social functions. Sponsored by Mrs. Mary Shelgren, the ambi¬ tious members of Olympians sell taffy apples. The proceeds are used to finance the cost of the an¬ nual Christmas basket for needy families, those who will attend Latin Contests, and receive the biannual scholarship. 67 68 Meeting If you have taken biology or wish to further your knowledge of the sciences, perhaps you would enjoy being a member of the Biology Club. This club strives not only to serve the school and community, but also to stimulate an interest in the natural sciences. Members are encouraged in their studies by as¬ sembling insect collections, charts, and models of the human body. Outside speakers are secured by the sponsor. Miss Lola Lemon and are scheduled for monthly meetings. This along with the induction, spring picnic, and various field trips help to make this club both interesting and informative. biology OFFICERS—Nancy Alexander, publ. chm.; Lauren Baldea, pres.; Sylvia 2 iba, ass’t. sec.-treas. talking to fellow student. These life-saving and grade-saving services are provided by the members of the Auxilia club. This club is composed of 25 students who wil¬ lingly assist their sponsor, Mrs. Faustine Jones, in the Senior Library. Members of this club have performed in many of the plays and musicals presented at school this year. The name Thespian was not arrived upon purely by accident. It comes from a man named Thespis who lived in 6th century B.C. Greece. He is called the father of Greek tragedy because he was the first to pick members of a performing chorus to step forward and portray a god or other character prominent in a Greek legend. This is the temporary ap¬ parel worn by new members of Auditorium Council during the hectic week of initiation. Under the supervision of the speech teacher, Mrs. Mary Busby, this club has provided our school with well organized ushers to assist with such programs as Vespers, Concerts, and class meetings. 75 choral department presents carnival Mr. Fissinger, known to the students in the choral department as Mr. F, has helped bring the famous musical, Carnival, to Lew Wallace. The production, which was presented in the latter part of May, starred Laurel Gersack, Bill Gregoline, Lynn Fleischman, and Gordy Lynde. After weeks of tedious rehearsals, moments of doubt, and last minute jitters, the play was pre¬ sented to an enthusiastic audience. The work was well appreciated—the crowd loved it. 76 Concentration John Hay sets up the chess board. ches s The game of chess is often thought of as played only by quiet people or wallflowers. This is far from true. The original purpose of the game, which was invented in India, was to divert men from the attractions of actual war. Players, using their pure skill, concentrate on the battle in miniature in front of them on the chessboard. The Chess Club encourages Lew Wallace students to participate in the game of chess. The club meets bi¬ monthly in the Instructional Material Center. Under the supervision of the Chess Club sponsor, Mr. Pieroni, members encourage the playing and teaching of chess to Lew Wallace students. Throughout the year, the Chess Club participates in tournaments with local schools. Horace Mann still remains Wallace’s Chess Club rival. 78 Mr. Molchan, sponsor. Before becoming a full-fledged member of this club one must be willing to undertake the respon¬ sibilities set before him in the preamble of the Boys’ Club Constitution. With the helpful advice of Mr. Elmer Mol¬ chan, they have formed an organized cheering block, and improved the standards of our school through greater participation and service. A strike . . . please? Meeting 79 Susan Eng sketches the mural for the annual turnabout. The Lew Wallace Booster Club is at work twelve months of every year. Preparations for the homecoming game begin before school lets out for the summer. Committees are chosen and work is begun early so that our Homecoming will be the best in Gary. One of the biggest jobs is the preparation of the huge football that the players run through onto the field. There are a million signs to be jjainted and hung and every sign re¬ quires a lot of tedious work so that it comes out looking great. Along with the school comes football games and this means more signs. Stands are packed and Gilroy field rocks with the sound of cheering voices. The Booster Qub is there, right in front, leading the other in supporting our team. Semester break brings the annual Booster Club turnabout dance. The theme this year was Pica- dilly Lane. The dance was decorated with murals representing shop fronts in Old London and the halls looked like miniature streets. The Booster Club also sponsors the Varsity and Reserve cheerleaders. Interested girls begin learning cheers in the spring and tryouts are held in early summer. Girls must pass a written ex¬ amination as well as the physical test. He assumed the responsibility of leading the school that once led him in his education. He shares with us the pride we have for Lew Wallace and strives to protect her reputation. He un¬ derstands why we cheer our Hornets on to victory so enthusiastically because he was and always will be a part of our school. He, too, always feels an inner pride as he sees our football team rush out on the field, or hears the band begin to play “Hail to Lew Wallace.” Only a man who was a part of our school can feel some of these enthusiasms. Welcome back to Lew Wallace Mr. Vorwald. Mr. Smith is a very familiar sight to all of us. We always see him in his office or talking with the students and teachers. He, also is very active in all school ac¬ tivities. We can always find Mr. Smith at the football and basketball games. Both our principal and assistant principal along with the school board officials have the difficult job of trying to create an at¬ mosphere beneficial to our education. Because of the efforts of these two men along with out teachers and other school officials. Lew Wallace has high academic standards and is respected throughout our community. Mr. A. E. Smith, Assistant principal Miss Street temporarily has her office in the alcove while hers is being painted. Mr. Savin checks a college application Bob Zimmerman and Maryanne Minarich pass out programs to Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman during open house. Miss Sharp and Pat Manion talk over her college plans. The guidance department attempts to help the high school student gain more from his education and abilities. They help him to prepare his high school program and make certain he has the proper amount of points toward gradua¬ tion. Some of their more important duties are to help the student adjust to high school life, administer achievement tests and to prepare him for an occupation after graduation. Many recommendations concerning a student’s character, ability and adjustment are made by the coun¬ selors. Perhaps the most gratifying re¬ sponsibility of the guidance counselor is the role of our friend. They are never too busy to listen to our problems or to give us those needed words of en¬ couragement. They help a student to pre¬ pare for the transition of high school life to college life. A student also receives in¬ formation concerning technical training after he has completed high school. Some alumni return to seek advise from their counselors. Some students receive schol¬ arships through the help of these people. Many of us would have a very confused future if it were not for the men and women here helping us to help ourselves. The office staff, the school nurse, and the custodial personnel perform many duties that we take for granted. The job of keeping all our school rec¬ ords in order and keeping account of our attendance is the responsibility of Mr. Smith’s and Mr. Vorwald’s office staffs. They keep the business part of school running smoothly and perform their tasks efficiently. Our school nurse, Mrs. Swisher, sees that our students are in good health while attending school. She also makes sure that all ill students seek medical help while they are absent from school. She co¬ operates with the public board of health by administering tuberculosis tests. The task of keeping Lew Wallace clean and shining requires many hours during and after school. The buildings are kept clean and so are the surrounding grounds. We can be very proud of our clean school and grateful for the many little things the custodians do. We are very thankful to those who keep our school in such good condition. These are just a few of the unsung heroes that make our school what it is today. They feel thay are just as much a part of school as we are and we realize how necessary they are to all of us. OFFICE STAFFS—Mrs. Mackley, Mrs. Skinla. Mrs. Minninger, Mrs. Vance. Mrs. Bullot, Mrs. Nawrot, and Mrs. Gordon 89 FINE ARTS TEACHERS—Mr. Chipperfield, Mr. Burelli, Mr. Strimbu and Miss Long. Some of our students pursue their ar¬ tistic abilities through courses offered in our fine arts department. Artistic ability is one that must be molded and refined. These are the aims of the fine arts teach¬ ers. Music is one type of course offered in fine arts. Lew Wallace offers band, or¬ chestra and choir classes. Many students receive instructions in musical instru¬ ments and voice training. The orchestra gives several concerts every year and plays at vesper and baccalaureate serv¬ ices. The band plays at our home football games, at important community activities and also presents a concert to all stu¬ dents. The choral department presents several musical shows and their operetta in the spring. They also provide us with Christmas carols before the holidays. Basic arts are divided into Commercial art for those students who wish to con¬ tinue in drawing for business use, while arts and crafts cater more to the students who like creating o bjects with clay, plaster, and other materials. Students here are fortunate to have photography offered on a high school level. The materials are expensive and students gain knowledge in this new art media. These courses offer a break for those students carrying a heavy academic load and they help them to appreciate the fine qualities of art in our life today. 90 Everything must be just right. We must be able to express ourselves and our ideas clearly to be understood. These are a few aims of the teachers involved in helping students to use these principles in life. Our two libraries are in full time use during the day and some nights after school. Many students take advantage of the books and materials for reports and information. The libraries also offer a quiet place to study, do research work, or just for pleasure reading. Lew Wallace is proud to have one of only twelve high school radio stations in Indiana. W.G.V.E. is completely student operated and combines educational and entertaining programs. This course is very helpful for students planning to go into the field of radio broadcasting and production. They serve our community by broadcasting events prevalent to school and athletic events. Our home basketball games are broadcast from Memorial Auditorium for people who cannot come to the games in person. Our student newspaper, “The Philoso¬ pher,” is an example of a student produc¬ tion. Students publish articles of interest to the school and inform us of school happenings. The time spent working for the newspaper can help anyone interested in future journalistic careers. “The Quill and Blade,” our high school annual, serves as a collection of memories. Students work for an entire year so everything will be just right. It is hard but rewarding work that the whole school benefits. 95 Mr. Mejia plays a recording for his Spanish class. Lew Wallace offers a variety of foreign languages that are used to help students understand the languages and customs of other nations in the world. Latin, French and Spanish are offered on four different levels and are taught in most high schools so that students can meet this requirement in certain colleges. In just the past few years German and Russian have been offered to students capable of understanding these more diffi¬ cult languages. Some of the language teachers sponsor clubs which meet after school for stu¬ dents interested in learning more culture and customs about the countries in which these languages are spoken. Recently Mr. Bohlin, Russian teacher, was voted a groovey teacher by radio station W.L.S. in Chicago. A few of the objectives of the foreign language teachers are to help their stu¬ dents read, write and translate the spe¬ cific language. Many of the customs, the type of government and literature are discussed. The language laboratory has been very helpful for students to pronounce the words correctly and to hear the language spoken by a native of the country. Some movies made in foreign countries are also shown to illustrate common happenings. By understanding the languages and customs of other lands, we can learn to live peacefully as neighbors. Busy work. english More of our classrooms are filled with students learning to perfect the language they have been speaking most of their lives. They study English as it has been written and learn how to write for themselves. During our Freshman year we were introduced to Mythology, reviewed grammar and studied “Great Expectations” and “The House of Seven Gables.” It is during this year that teachers hope to instill good English grammar, vocabulary and a knowledge of literature into their students. As Sophomores we face the task of compos¬ ing our autobiography. Most students feel they know and understand themselves much better after they finish reminiscing their childhood, ana¬ lyzing the present and planning for their future. We are introduced to Shakespeare’s writings through Julius Caesar and study Silas Marner and some selected short stories. In our Junior year we study American poetry, read “Giants in the Earth” and for nearly six weeks we research for our term topic. This gives us practice for future term papers during our Senior year in high school or in college. Condensed versions of great American novels like “Moby Dick”, “The Scarlet Letter”, or “The Red Badge of Courage” were also discussed. Senior English may be the most important year spent in English. “Macbeth” and “Tale of Two Cities” are the novels studied. English Literature is discussed and grammar and vocabulary is polished. Composition is studied in preparation for college. For some students this is their final study of our language. Mrs. F. Jones, librarian of the study hall. 99 student autograph Miss D. Kouvelas, World History. Mr. P. Pieroni, Psychology. One way to prepare for tomorrow is to take advantage of what happened yester¬ day. In Social Studies classes we learn about important events that have occur¬ red in our world for many generations. By realizing what people have done un¬ der certain curcumstances, we can under¬ stand what their problems have been and how we can help them now. Freshmen may take Geography and Civics their first year of high school to help them prepare for World History, American History, Government, and Eco¬ nomics. All of these courses are designed to make the students aware of the hap¬ penings in our world. If we can under¬ stand the basic conditions under which we must live and the different conditions under which other nations must live, we can prepare ourselves to live peacefully together. An advance placement course is offered to Juniors who show exceptional ability in world history. These students have very much outside reading to sup¬ plement classwork. Miss Shirley Bryan teaches this class and has been elected the president of the Indiana Social Stud¬ ies Teachers Federation. social studies Endless homework . . . Many of the math rooms are decorated geometrically. Lew Wallace offers a diversified pro¬ gram of mathematics for students meet¬ ing this two year requirement. There are courses in arithmetic. General math and Applied math courses for students not planning to continue their education in college. For the student who wishes to have a broader background in math for college and work in science, there are Al¬ gebra, Geometry and Trigonometry classes. It has been said that mathematics is the most exact of any science. It is also true that mathematics has help)ed us to achieve many feats in the field of science. Some phases of math are being taught in a new manner. But most of the basic theorems are thousands of years old. Much of the math used in architecture is the same as it was hundreds of years ago. Man’s knowledge of the earth has more than doubled in the past twenty-five years. In perhaps the next five years we will have a man on the moon. In a world that is progressing as rapidly as ours is, we must take advantage of any education in the field of science. Students attending Lew Wallace are required to take at least one year of sci¬ ence before graduation. First year science includes Biology, the study of all living things or Bio-Physics which combines a semester of Biology and another of Phys¬ ical Science. For those who wish to con¬ tinue their studies, there is Chemistry and Physics the following years. Recently Lew Wallace has introduced advanced Biology, Chemistry or Physics for Seniors who have completed three years of the regular programs. Students interested in Chemistry have started a Chemistry Club similar to the Biology Club we have had for several years. Our students show an interest in the sciences and some of them major in science in college. 109 Concentration on a difficult problem Mr. Schoon, chemistry teacher no Tons of chemicals for experiments It’s got to work this time! Taking care of a home and family is important to all girls. Since some of them marry soon after graduation, they can prepare for their new occupation while still in high school. Nutrition, diets, and food preparation are studied in cooking class. Contrary to popular opinion, the girls do not spend the whole hour just making cookies. Clothing classes give girls a chance to increase their wardrobe inexpensively. Popular styles, types of fabrics and pat¬ tern directions are studied before making an outfit. In the spring the clothing de¬ partment has a style show with students modeling clothing they have made. Child care, planning a wedding and family problems are sources for study in Home Nursing and Modern Living classes. The family is discussed and dolls are cared for like real children. The girls make a wedding book as a guide to what they must prepare for their own wedding. 113 The portable building—home of the shop classes. Working with machinery requires constant concentration. 114 Any day of the school year you can hear the sounds of busy machinery and hard working boys in the portable build¬ ings. They may be in metal or wood shop, building something useful for their home, or in print shop doing some tickets or programs for school. In the electricity shop some boys are building motors or radios. The machines used in the shops are of great variety. This is one class where manual skills can be developed. The In¬ dustrial Arts teachers try to encourage the boys to be careful and to do their best possible. In the fall the Guidance department and the Student Council sponsor Open House. The Industrial Arts classes dis¬ play some of their works in the cafeteria for all the parents to see. In the spring the top ten per cent of the gradu¬ ating class is announced to express the pride the school feels as a whole to these students. It takes many long hours of studying and devotion to excel in the classroom. All of them deserve the recog¬ nition as leaders and scholars. Gary’s Advance Study Program, for¬ merly known as Joe Berg Seminar, is an opportunity for outstanding high school students in this area, to meet and hear talks concerning the different fields of their interest. The groups are divided into three main classifications, Humanities, Sciences and Foreign Languages. They meet at Horace Mann school one night a week. The Science group toured the Gary Work’s of U.S. Steel this fall. The com¬ plete steel making process was discussed. The gridmen opened their season with a 40-0 victory against Valpo. Don Gatch made two of the touchdowns and three of the extra points beginning his rally for city scoring champ, which he captured with 93 points. Not letting the Horace Mann defeat keep them down, the determined Hornets tipped the Froebel Blue Devils to a 19-12 victory. With 12:15 left to play in the ’65 Homecoming game, junior quarterback, Dave Shelbourne, made a one-yard sneak for the only touchdown made in the game. While being behind the Whiting Oilers 6-7 in the fourth quarter, Don Gatch plunged into the Oilers’ defense for a 13-7 victory. One of the best games of the season was played when the Hor¬ nets collapsed the Brickie Bowl with a score of 20-0. Wrestling, one of the oldest sports in history, requires more physical fitness, strength, speed, skill, and preparation than most sports. Up until a few years ago, grappling, as it is commonly called, has been virtually unknown; but it is rap¬ idly gaining in popularity not only in this region but all over the country. The sport of wrestling barring none, is the most competitive simply because there are twelve weight classes and each matman cannot be more than one or two pounds lighter or heavier than his oppo¬ nent. Also, win or lose, it is entirely indi¬ vidual. There is no one on the mat ex¬ cept the two wrestlers and the referee. A wrestling bout consists of three two- minute periods. The first is started from a standing position. The object is to “take down” the opponent to gain an offensive position. During the next two periods, wrestlers alternate one being the offense the other defense. The final goal is to either pin the opponent’s shoulders to the mat for two seconds or out point him. A pin is five points and a decision is three. Though the team did not have a vic¬ torious season, Don Cox 7-3, Dave Simola 6-4, and Ned Sibich 5-4 proved successful. Wrestling was started at Lew Wallace five years ago. It requires many long, hard hours after school to keep in shape. The season record was 2-7-1. The team was coached by George Rykovich. cross country Tom Jadrnak At the sound of the gun, the harriers from Wallace are off to a grueling two- mile run. Under the expert training of Coach Mike Jennings, the boys ran many miles and long hours every day. This hard work paid off handsomely for Coach and the team. Headed by Dan Candiano, they took second in city and conference competition. Although losing to Calumet, they defeated twenty-three teams to take a second place trophy at the Hobart In¬ vitational. Major letter winners were Candiano, G. Heid, Jadrnak, Shearer, Lasseire, J. Heid, and Bleicher. The overall record was an outstanding 44 wins and 3 losses. Many thanks go out to Coach Jennings and all the team for their fine perform¬ ance throughout the season. Cliff Shearer and a teammate discuss the meet. They’re off! tennis The Wallace tennis team under the di¬ rection of Coach Nick Day completed the ’65 season on a somber note, having lost five out of thirteen matches for the sea¬ son. Michigan City, a new foe for the Hor¬ net netters, made the season opener dis- asterous as they ended the Wallace win streak held over from the ’64 season at eleven straight. They scored a perfect 5-0 triumph. Hammond High and Clark followed with two more wins, at 5-0 and 4-1, re¬ spectively, before the Wallace crew could gell and get on the winning track. The rest of the season was a see-saw battle for city and conference position. They came out third in both competitions. They ended with a season total of 8 wins and 5 losses. Glen Lodovisi, senior, and Mark Yakubec, junior, led the team with 10-3 and 8-4 records. Jim Lopez, sophomore, played the number one single position, finished 8-5. Lodovisi set a school mark by becoming the first player to reach the finals of the conference single tourney. First row: A. Gregory, M. Yakubec, G. Lodovisi. Second row: R. Johnson, B. Despite the loss of the entire team, the ’66 team has had a very good season, midway through, with a record of 9-3. Coach William Mills had these boys swinging clubs by early April and prac¬ ticed all during Easter Vacation. The golfers average about 165 for nine holes with four players. This is about 41 per player. In golf, there are several important terms necessary to understand golf. Some of them are: par, equal to the course; birdie, one below par; boggy, one above par; and eagle, two under par. Heading the team are R. Dennison, along with D. Thomas, L. Norris, R. Ban, T. Lashenik, and R. Kepshire. Thus far in the season, they have defeated Merrillvilee, Hammond, Emerson, Wirt, Roosevelt, Noll, River Forest, Lowell, and Tolleston. Having lost only to Gavit, Crown Point, and Hobart. track The 1965 track squad finished its sea¬ son with an overall record of seven wins and seven losses. Consistent point win¬ ners were Gary Heid (440 yard dash), John Gielniak (high jump), and Tom Jadrnak (hurdler). The team placed fifth in the Gary High School Meet. The ’65 squad finished sixth in a field of twelve teams in the NWC. Since there were only four seniors on the ’65 squad, a well above season is ex¬ pected. A well-balanced frosh-soph squad will add great depth to this year’s team. Outstanding among last year’s distance runners were Pole, Heid, and Laisure. Coaches Troy and Jennings started practice in the halls this year. Very early in the season Dan Candiano set a new record in the mile run. At the City In¬ door Meet, he was clocked at 4:28.6, beating the old record of 4:36. 135 The Wallace cagers didn’t set any rec¬ ords this season, but there was an im¬ provement over last year. Due to the untimely loss of their team¬ mate, John Minarich, the morale of the team and the school was not of the high¬ est. “We want to win this one for Min¬ nie,” was heard from the team before the Hobart game. And they did! They de¬ feated Hobart 87-78, the highest scoring game of this season! The score was tied seven times and the lead was shifted seventeen times. Zakula and Mark came through with 28 and 21 points respec¬ tively. The Hornets defeated Wirt, Horace Mann, Hammond Morton, Mishawaka, Tolleston, Hobart, and East Gary for a 7- 13 season total. Wallace had several tough breaks by losing by one and two point sizzlers. Zakula made the sectional team and was high scorer for the season followed by Gielniak. varsity basketball First Row: G. Coach Clarence Day presided over seventeen freshman boys this season. They were divided into two teams, A team and B team. These boys learned coordination and fundamental skills and plays to ready themselves for reserve and varsity cagers. B team had a record of 5-7 and A team 3-14. Coach Bill Kukoy and the reserve team witnessed a great improvement over last year. They finished with an 11-9 season record and a 7-4 in conference play as compared with last season’s 3-14 record. To add to this winning season, the re¬ serves broke an all time Wallace record by scoring 74 points against Whiting. Under the guidance of Coach Kukoy, these boys will be important future var¬ sity material. The top five scorers were Milgi 193, Bell 160, Lopez 145, Psimos 90, and Maretich 79. As spring unfolds, the competition turns to softball, hand ball, and horseshoes. For those interested in gymnastics, an up-and-coming sport, Coach Bailey has introduced this sport to Lew Wallace. He hopes to make it a varsity sport next year. baseball Damian gets in at third. Han. The 1965 Wallace baseball team proved excellent last season. Under the leadership of Coach Larry Martin, the team won its first NWC championship in several years. Wallace defeated Whiting in two straight games for the conference playoff games with scores of 2-0 and 1-0. The overall conference record was 11-1. The 1966 team suffered the loss of many boys through graduation and John Minarich. This year’s season was a re¬ building more than anything else. The team was composed of M. An- dreoli, G. Damian, M. Rigotti, D. Gatch, B. Warieka, M. Cooper, B. Johnston, R. Grubb, T. Mandon, G. Mark, D. Mor- rone, T. Bell, D. Shelbourne, D. Kamin¬ ski, and R. Recktenwall. This year for the first time there was a reserve baseball team for freshmen and sophomores. Mr. Nick Swiegart did the coaching for the reserves. ■•114 Ai.l4M WVOOW Mlli AAliU VVOOM ALBUM CLASS OF 1967 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS—Dave Kaminski, Vice President; Irene Yacura, Treas¬ urer; Georgene Makivich, Secretary; Fred Stults, President. Finally, we the class of 1967 became upper classmen. This was the year of Moby Dick, My Antonia and term topics. Some of us began our business courses, some of us checked our credits for college and some of us took merit tests. After class officers were elected, we began our many projects raising money for the Junior Prom. The school’s first hootenany starring Bill Brackett was given by the junior class. It was received enthusiastically by all of the student body. A pot luck which was given on February 14, ended with painting blue and white theatre posters depicting our prom theme “On Broadway”. After all of our weeks of planning and working in advance, we attended our Junior prom held in Blessed Sacrament Church Hall on May 6. So a memorable year ends. We Juniors feel we are now ready for our big year which lies ahead. After we elected our new class officers, we began our heavy academic program. In English, we were reading Ivanhoe, Julius Caesar and spending hours writing our character sketches. There was biology for some, language for others and chemistry for a few. The highlight of our Sophomore year was buying our class rings. We elected a committee to make our ring selection. We bought them in gray, ice blue, black onyz, red and pearl white with silver SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS—Irene Stambolos, Treasurer; Bob Ivancevich, Sec¬ retary; Dave Baldea, Vice President; Don Shelbourne, President. or gold bands. Weeks in advance, committees were organized and plans were constructed for our Sophomore class party held in the main gym on May 20. All of us were anxiously awaiting our next school year. Being introduced to high school, its classes, activities and pro¬ grams was a big adjustment for most of us. We will always remem¬ ber the activities of Freshman Week where we searched for our Big Sisters at the Sock Hop and accompanied our mothers to the Mother-Daughter Tea. This was the year of our first homecoming, our first turnabout and our first program planning. Early in the year our class meeting was held and class officers were elected. This was the first year that four girls were elected to class office. In class we were taking a wide range of courses including every¬ thing from algebra, world history to physical education. In English we read Silas Marner and Great Expectations. In the middle of our year, we held our Freshman class party “Mardi Gras”. Completing our first year of high school, we feel we have ac¬ complished much in the field of learning and understanding to prepare ourselves for the remainder of our high school days. Adamus. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is some¬ thing in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize oth¬ ers. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. 164 Townsend Pontiac 6300 Broadway 165 Lew Wallace Parent Boosters 166 Buy Low 901 E. 49th Avenue Frank’s Store For Men 3837 Broadway 167 Trends By Esther Stanley’s I.G.A. under conditions of inadequate facilities, insuffi¬ cient help, and many other disabilities. We should like to thank all of the people that did extend their assistance to us in the production of this annual. Special thanks goes to Mr. George Strimbu for the many, many late hours he donated with no pay or thanks. The staff would like to thank Valerie Drozda and Charlie Ward for their unselfish services in making this book the best possible. They were awarded for their services with medals on Senior Honor Day as best staffer and photographer. Many thanks are also given to Scott Patellis, Theresa Brier, and Louise Racich for their assist¬ ance in sports and club copywriting. Thanks are also due to Bill Drozda for his help on the album. Thanks, too, are extended Mary Bisbis for her advertising sales. Much credit is due Sharon Kozar and JoAnn Pellichino for their work and efforts in business management and advertising sales. Credit is given to the Gary Post Tribune for the basketball team picture. In order to keep up with changing times, we have retained the Square annual, which was in¬ troduced at Indiana University this year, and we welcome the ’66 Arbutus of Indiana University to the Square club. 192 @ This book printed by VELVATONE, a special process of litho¬ graphic printing.
