Her mother dying soon after her birth, she was reared by her maternal grandparents. She received her education in a local elementary school, and the Warsaw High School, graduating at sixteen. After receiving her degree, she became principal of a grade school in Anderson, Indiana. And at the close of World War I, came to Gary where she first taught math and spelling at Emerson. Mr. Wirt appointed her principal of Glen Park School in 1921, principal of Franklin in 1923, and principal of Lew Wallace in 1927. She was the only woman principal of a secondary school in Gary. Under her guidance the east wing of the main building was constructed and in 1932, Wal¬ lace became a Senior High School and graduated its first class. The reserve’s record consisted of six wins and only one tie. The tie resulted after a hard fought contest against Horace Mann which ended in the final score of 7-7. As a result of the tie Lew Wallace and Horace Mann became city co¬ champions. Sophomores and juniors composed the team which played their games on Saturday mornings. Under the direction of Coach Larry Martin the boys learned new plays and football techniques. According to Coach Martin some excellent material will be available to next year’s varsity squad from this year’s reserve team. 102 The reserves endured many rough skirmishes on their way to becoming city champs. Our mermen took first place honors in eleven events and set new city records in eight of these. As a result of many hours of hard practice two swimmers repeatedly took firsts in their two events. Wallace drew the Ingots of River Forest as their first opponents in the ’65 tournament. The Hornets held a small margin against the favored River Forest team until the end of the fourth quarter. With a little over three minutes left to go the Ingots knotted the score. As the clock ticked away the last seconds of the game, the Hornets bounced back to take the victory. As a result of his performance in tournament play, George Kos was named to the first string of the Sectional team. In regular season play, the cagers succeeded in downing only Horace Mann and Hobart. Due to the cold weather the boys got in condition for the Gary City Indoor Meet, their first season competition, by running in the first floor halls and exercising in the main gym. Fifteen lettermen returned to this year’s team while forty-five freshmen started their first year of running track. These experienced lettermen and the upcoming freshmen are expected to boost both the reserve and varsity records by winning at least half of their conference meets. Besides the different distance runs, other events include the pole vault, hurdles, and high jump. Tom Thomas develops shot put skills before the season begins. 113 The beginning of March not only brought cold winds, but also, practice for prospective baseball players. Early practice proved fruitful last year as our batsmen won the city championship title and were able to compete in the conference playoffs. In baseball the Northwestern Indiana High School Conference is divided in two sections, the East and the West. In the playoff games our batsmen represented the East while Hammond represented the West. The team winning two out of three games would become the champions. After the second game the Hornets were defeated by a score of 5-6. Thirteen members of last year’s varsity squad returned to the diamond this spring. With such a large number of experienced players, the baseball future looked bright for Coach Larry Martin’s Hornet batsmen. Wallace engages in eight conference games and ten non-conference games during a single season, with all home games being played on the main field after school. Now our classes and activities had more meaning for us because they were our last and this was our year. The first months, filled with the excitement of the election of our class officers, homecoming, and the championship football game against South Bend Riley, brought us quickly to our first senior function, the Senior Reception on January 28. Soon afterwards, came the production of the Senior Play, Good-bye My Fancy. Academically we were exposed to widely varied fields. In our Civics and Economics classes we studied the complexities of the country ' s governmental and economic systems. Trigonometry and physics completed our studies in advanced math and science while second year studies in business courses prepared us for competition in the business world. In English we studied the works of Shake¬ speare and Chaucer in Macbeth and the Canterbury Tales. We dis¬ cussed the human mind and behavior in Psychology. Still, the big moment was yet to come. As we ordered our calling cards and invitations and were measured for our caps and gowns we realized that we were actually seniors and the big day was not far off. With the satisfaction of a job well done we saw our classmates accept awards and scholarships on Activity Day, attended the Senior Luncheon, and participated in Baccalaureate services. We will al¬ ways remember the magic of the night of May 14, the Senior Prom, and the fun-filled day afterwards. Finally the day we have been working toward for twelve years draws near—June 4, Commencement. As we walk across the stage and receive our diplomas we look to the future and what it holds for us with confidence and know that we must now face a world of greater dimensions than we have known. 118 seniors Sharon Accettura Jerry Adank Jeanne Allman Nick Ares Dayna Arnold Gloria Aubuchon Cathy Barney Rod Basiak Bobbi Batcha Janet Belopavlovich Doreen Bencze Clint Bently Dave Bentley Anne Besmark Carol Bianchi Danny Biggs Cathy Bisbis Barbara Blash Marilyn Bradford Marsha Bradon Paula Braun Frances Blazevich Cindy Bosak Bill Brown Carolyn Brown Barbara Bradley Terry Brown Bill Bruner 120 Colleen Bryson Dennis Bubac Carol Buhner Diana Bumbales Bruce Burch seniors George Buzuvis Donald Callahan Andy Carlson William Carper Dave Carmony Larry Carr Donna Conder Nick Cost Charlene Costo Richard Cox Ronald Cristallo Sylvia Crocus Kay Croll Bill Crompton Mike Cuculic Cynthia Dimitroff Chuck Dobis Linda Doidge A1 Cznamecki Connie Czerwin Bob Czubik Terri Damian Jeanne Denesuk Bonnie Danford Patricia Dickerson Rick Davies Eddie Dilley Darlene Dravet Dwight Dommer Don Dulla seniors Linda Dunnam s i Susan Ernest John Fernandez Linda Durbin ■■ Roberta Espy Robin Fernandez Terry Dykhuis Pat Failla David Fesko A1 Eisenmenger Wanda Elkins Allen Eng Barry Fancher Florence Favia Pat Ferguson Daryl Fielding George Finch Dianne Firme Daniel Flowers Linda Flowers 123 Richard Fodemski Sheila Foster Murray Fox Robert Frazier Ron Freeman Sharon Fuller Linda Fulton Bob Galambus Carl Ga lka Carol Gaydos Rebecca Garletts Ben Gatch JoEllen Gawor Geri Gedda Sheryl George Kathy Geresy Linda Gillis Clelia Girgenti Angela Glorioso Steve Golub seniors Terry Guthrie Betsy Hecker Nancy Guinee Mike Gutesha Tom Harrison Doug Hauser Harris Herschman Cindi Heveder David Higgins Larry Gruchalski Sue Guelfo Carol Guess I Sue Holt Bill Homoky Michael Hritz Janet Irak Karen Huffman Monika Iwan John Jaremczuk Alan Joachim Bill Horbach Stan Horvath Hershel Hoskins Michael Hulick Barbara Hurt Ed Ihnat Ron Jackson Maggie James Mary Jancose John Johansson Douglas Johns Mike Kaczur seniors Mike Kappas Linda Kaufman Ted Kinnis John Kirtland Bill Knapp Brenda Knight Karen Koches Bill Koldus Sue Komechak Yvonne Kosanovich Ronald Koves Martha Krampe Joe Krol Alice Krzyzewski Benny Kubiak Steve Kulavick Louise Lasayko Joseph Leon Dan Lewandowski John Lewis David Lopez Remy Lazarowicz Charles Lazinski Frank Lazzaro Karen Lewis Jim Lilley Louie Lindinger Harry Lothian Marsha Little Carolyn Lopez Glenn Lothian Charles Lowe seniors Leon Malis Tim Malis James Malone Ron Maples Milan Marich Dianne Marino Al Madson Mike Malaski Pat Malich Dennis Mahns Tom Mandich Kim Maple Irene Marrs Carl Martikean Suzanne Martin Mary Medellin James Middleton Joe Mielczarek Tom Milteer Rita Mireles Phil Mishevich Howard Mohler Alex Monanteras Berta Monterrubio Sandra Mihich Andy Milich Tom Miller Bob Mitchell j G h n Modos Ted Modrowski Carmen Moreno Eileen Morrissey Agnes Mrak John Nepsa Brenda Nicholas Joe Nicholson seniors Ron Podunovich Sue Poliak Nancy Powenski Gary Pyles James Quantz Sheila Quenett Carol Quigley Emilio Ramos Stan Pytel Joe Randazzo Judy Richards Melody Raymond Gary Reddick Matthew Renner George Riddle Ron Renfro Linda Riecan Donald Reno Kathy Rockhill Felicia Rodriguez Don Rogers George Rogge Sylvia Roszkowski seniors Phyllis Rowe Jim Rubino Cheryl Rukavina Peter Ruschak Robert Rutell Erfried Rzonca Barbara Sackman Ronald Samicki Greg Sadowski Ben Saims Andy Sajda Rosalie Sannicola Rodger Sampson Ron Saporsky John Sass Carol Schacki Herbert Schweitzer Jim Scott 134 Patricia Sizemore p a t Skalku Mary Skirak Kathleen Smith Rod Smith Kathy Sniegowski Sonja Skirak Tom Slama Carole Smith Dennis Sobat Stephany-Sokol Art Solomon George Starcevich Bill Stark Joe Stark Jeff Stefanovich Jim Stefanovich Diane Strincevich Roger Stem ply Bobbie Stucker Phil Stone Terry Summers Carol Strincevich James Svetich Robert Swisher Chuck Szabo Mary Ann Thompson Margaret Truett Bill Tutlewski Jackie Underwood Junette Vaclavik James Van Wienen Jeff Vaseloff seniors Stella Walton Sharyn Wampler Gregory White Robert White Pam Wilk Dave Wilson Paula Weeks Sharron White Dave Welch Connie Whitten Cheryl White Dennis Wielgus Jerry Wilkerson David Wirick John Wojtowicz Florence Yovanoff 1 Pamela Yover Patricia Zark Casimir Zulkowski Linda Zulkowski NOT PICTURED; Leslie Bagley Pat Ballad Terrence Baranyos Robert Bell Lorraine Biedul Joseph Bodo Agnes Chiabai Thomas Chowning James Dumenric Helen Glibota Sharon Kosakowski Virginia Lee Don Maples Linda Maxwell Serafin Pardo Sandra Payne Dave Phillips Mary Simons Mike Sullivan James Troutner William Tucker 138 senior autographs 139 class of ’66 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS—Mickey Cooper, President; Judy Feinberg, Treasurer; Kathy Sides. Secretar y; Mike Andreoli, Veep. As upperclassmen, the class of ’66 successfully met the challenges and responsibilities of high school life. We began to take an active part and gain experience in athletics and club activities. Our first duty was to nominate and then elect capable class officers. Some of us were honored by being inducted into the Senior Honor Society. In fulfilling our academic requirements we traced the heritage of our country in U.S. History classes. Giants in the Earth and Our Town were read in English class while we spent many long and tedious hours in libraries writing our term topics. Adventurous stu¬ dents in the class enrolled in Chemistry, Algebra II, and Advanced Placement History courses which introduced us to new concepts in these areas and kept us busy. In preparation for our main social event, the Junior Prom, com¬ mittees were organized early and worked diligently all year long. Many hours of hard work and the cooperation of many students raised the money necessary to cover class expenses by selling gas tickets at the Clark Service Station and through basketball games between members of the faculty and our class. All of our hard work and anticipation were rewarded on the night of our first class prom on May 29. As this event brought our social year to a close we knew that next year when we returned we would return as seniors. Eloff, Treasurer; Carole Kish, Secretary; Steve Zakula, Veep. class of ’67 No longer “little freshmen,” we became confident sophomores, fac¬ ing new and different phases of school life. We became involved and assumed offices in more extra curricular activities. In sports, many of us gained valuable experience on differ¬ ent teams. Some of us even made varsity teams. We also selected four students to serve as our new class officers and then attended the class meeting they planned for us. In the course of study we read William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and put in writing, the histories of our lives in our autobiog¬ raphies. In geometry we struggled through countless proofs and memorized the many theorems, while in foreign language classes we worked hard to learn the different verb tenses. The histories of many countries were set before us in World History class. In the early part of the year a ring committee was formed to select the style of our official class rings. Finally, in March, the long awaited moment arrived when we ordered our new rings. We se¬ lected the ones we liked best from a selection including the mother of pearl, blood ruby, Tahiti smoked pearl, and the traditional black onyx stones. The big social event of the year was our class party in May. Many of us worked hard on various committees to make the night a suc¬ cess. As this year comes to a close we look forward to receiving our class rings and becoming upperclassmen. 146 sophomores Pam Aubuchon Patricia Axtman Candy Banks Richard Barlow Barb Barnes Betty Barnett Ann Bartley Tom Bartley Sheri Beamon Catherine Beaudrea Becky Becker Phyllis Blanton Richard Bogash Gene Bovkir Louis Bower David Bowman Judy Boylan Rich Brady Theresa Brier Cathie Breadstone JoAnne Brooks Chuck Brown Pat Casey Charlotte Caylor George Chandler Debra Childers Sigmund Cieszkiewicz Linda Clark Charlene Clements Mike Coffey Richard Cokusis Linda Connelly John Conner Richard Czubik Fred Dalby Lynn Danko James Daugherty Linda Deaton Charlene Dembowski Don Dendy Bud DeVaney Linda Davis Nancy Davis Allen DeWitt Robert Dumay Jackie Durbin Marianne Dziewicki Karen Eberhardt Linda Eckersall Ronald Eimer Cindy Eloff Susan Eng Janet Epps Vicki Erdelac Frank Erfurth Martin Acevez Mike Adams Roger Alexander James Anderson Martha Anderson Michael Antala John Antich Claudia Antons Rita Ares Jean Ashwood Gerald Aubuchon Verlin Belcher Bill Bellcr Richard Bellcr Joyce Benedict Julian Benedict Cindy Bennett Sandra Berry Randy Binkley Mary Bisbis Robert Blackburn Jim Blackwell Betty Bruner Donna Brunker Michele Bryan Larry Burkall Bob Burns Ronald Burrell Donald Burton Michele Caldwell George Cass Barbara Campbell Dorothy Carben Jim Cook Cheryl Cooper Glona Cooper Stephen Corona Darlene Cox Donald Cox Niki Cramvis Susan Crnkovich Mike Crnoevich Catherine Crull Jackie Cwiklinski Barbara Devyak Eddie Dartz Elaine Diamond Robert Dickerson Carole Dillman Mark Dobis Jim Dombrowski Steven Dommer Florence Dowdy Zita Drake James Duchscher Roberta Erfurth Linda Erler Norma Espinoza Jim Estep Cheryl Evans Dave Evans James Evans Marianne Evon Jack Falatic Gayle Fancher Andrea Feinberg 147 Diana Ferguson Cheryl Fielding Larry Fitchhorn Larry Fleischman Francine Foler Cindy Forney Connie Fox Thomas Frangis Darlene Fulton Vincent Gabriel Stan Gajewski Jim Goszewski Barbara Grantham Leonard Greco Susan Green John Greer Patricia Gregoline Alexander Gulaboff Pamela Gurgevich Janice Hachlica Pam Hall Helene Hallas Paulette Harbison Carol Harman Sherry Harris Royal Hardy JoAnne Henderson Sally Henson Timothy Herbert Arnold Hermes Lynne Hey wood Paul Hidebrandt Sandra Higgins Dave Ikeler John Irak Jerry Ireland Peter Ivankovich Bernard Iwan Steve Jacobs Tom Jadrnak Ed Jagiela Ruth Jancose Joseph Jandura Charles Jarmusz Cinday Jordan Ron Joseph Carol Jostes June Kaiser David Kalkanoff Donna Kaminski Eva Kaminski Michael Kaminski Tom Kehoe Kathleen Kelly Allen Kepchar Susan KolefT Denise Kolvek George Komenda Mary Komorkoski Leo Konikowski Ruth Knoikowski Patricia Konja Leonard Konjak Robert Kopanski Larry Kordys Martha Koves Jim Garner Dave Garrard Sharon Gaydos Greg George Art Georgion Rosemary Gilbeau Dan Gile Sarah Ann Goetz Greg Gonzalez Pat Gordon John Goss JoAnn Hallett Dick Halstead Carole Hamady Diana Hamann Patricia Hamilton Phillip Hamilton Mike Hamilton Fred Hamlin Steve Hampton Roger Hancock Ron Hancock Susan Hills George Hitchings Frank Hocza Jim Hoffman Angela Holt Judy Holtzman Yvonne Hotarie William Howell Bruce Hunter Doris Hutchins Mary Hydo Alan Jasper Susan Jelusich Glen Jenkins John Jenkins Janice Jevicks Dave Joachim Brenda Johnson Sarah Johnson William Johnston Debbie Jones Robert Jones Geraldine Kepchar Carole Kish Charlotte Kish Linda Kish Carol Klein Charlene Klippel Bernadette Klosowski Philip Klus A1 Kmetz Charles Kobe Bob Kochek 148 Judy Lange! We attended assemblies which acquainted us with school procedures and during Freshman Week the girls found their senior “big sisters” and went with their “sisters” to the different activities staged for them. The newness of our surroundings soon wore off and we settled down to business. We nominated and then went on to elect our first class officers. The boys began training in different fields of athletics and we had our own teams in football and basketball. In the field of academic study we enrolled in a wide variety of classes. A butterfly collection and the dissection of frogs were projects in biology. Some of us followed Richard the Lion-Hearted through the story of Ivanhoe while others studied Charles Dicken’s Great Expectations. Algebra and Latin required our deepest concentration while some of us began our business training by taking General Business. As the year ended several of us won honors in English, math, foreign language, and other subjects on Freshman Activity Day. We had had to make a major adjustment in this, our first year of high school and we tried our best to make this adjustment. Next year we will no longer be “freshies” but competent sophomores ready to face the challenges in our remaining three years of school. freshmen Danny Arnold Ashley Patterson Pamela Baigent Charles We wish to thank our parents for their under¬ standing the necessity of late hours, missed meals, and lowered grades. Special recognition is extended to various members of the faculty and the student body. We thank Mr. Joseph Mrak for the constant use of his telephone and his sense of humor. Our thanks go to the office staffs for furnishing us with information and supplies. Special recog¬ nition also goes to Mrs. Elizabeth Sepiol, East Building custodian, for her extreme patience with us and her kind and encouraging words. Mr. Frank Krause deserves our thanks for lending us his talents and encouragement as we produced our new style book, the first of its kind in the city. Mr. Krause is our representa¬ tive from the publishers, Wm. J. Keller Inc. Last, but certainly not least, we extend our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to our ad¬ visor, Mr. George Strimbu. He gave us much needed confidence, his time and energy, his understanding, and most of all, his way out sense of humor which frequently relieved the tensions caused by long hours of hard work and enabled us to go on working.
