Present requirements for graduation tend to empha¬ size eight or more semesters of work related to the communications skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Gradually, students are led to thoughtful reading, intelligent listening, clear thinking, creative writing, and effective conversation. Reading ability is promoted and developed through studies made of great authors ' works. As freshmen, we delight in literature as the romantic novel, Scotts ' IVAN- HOE, is introduced to us. We find pleasure in plays such as JULIUS CAESAR the following year. We also learn a simple method of self-appraisal by writing our auto¬ biographies during our sophomore year. Rolvaag ' s GIANTS IN THE EARTH and Dickers A TALE OF TWO CITIES help us search deeply into the paths of human behavior. Writing and speaking help us express our feelings and ideas to others. To develop these skills we study English composition, journalism, and speech. The ability to understand what we read and the ability to write or talk about it are our goals. The suc¬ cess we achieve in life is partially determined by how little or how much we have gained through our com¬ munication skills. ( nc fidh Served (J3c adid %„■ c, ommunica tion Shilid . . .
