HE 1956 QUILL and BLADE Lew Wallace Hiqh School Courtesy— Elmer Budlove Gary Post-Tribune Photographer The year 1955-56 was a year of successful activity. We danced at the dances, cheered at the games, voted for class officers, studied for finals, and worshipped at Vespers. We gained in know¬ ledge, character, and citizenship. This book is a tribute to the many students and teachers who have spent the past year Within the Walls of Wallace. fi Within the Walls of Wallace Student Life 6- 23 f rv Administration and School Staffs 24 - 27 28- 31 32- 49 50- 53 f fc Grj-sr Sophomore Class 54 - 59 Freshman Class 60- 67 Activities 68 - 93 Sports 94-111 Closing Page 112 ci ' z -r -. « Uv - Within the Walls of Wallace EXCITING ACTIVITIES WERE ENJOYED Grace Zury and Scott Poli- zotto are viewing the long and the short of graduation gowns; the long being Michel Nikolich and the short being Nancy Dudak as they try to find the right sizes. The Girls ' Club Birthday Potluck of 1955 was cele¬ brated for the third consecu¬ tive year by a large group of enthusiastic party-goers. 8 The big race for senior class officers was a very close one. Senior students, in¬ cluding one of the nominees, Keith Barton, anxiously watched election results Eager students were wait¬ ing for the announcement of the winners of the Sportsman¬ ship and Mary Cheever Awards on Activity Day. On this day students receive special recognition for a- chievements. Mike Muldoon, coached on proper picture posture by Miriam Melvin and Audrey Warona. was one of the many students who sat before the camera man on Pix Day. . . . CROWDS WERE FOUND EVERYWHERE” Before and after school, crowded lockers and crowded halls create an atmosphere of friendly confusion. Each hour of the day finds the lib rary crowded and filled with students seeking know¬ ledge beyond that of their textbooks. 11 A junior English class listens to a report by Adrienne Briski on the life of a famous author. . THE CLASS Latin classes combine the ancient with the modern. Judy Ivancevich shows mem bers of the class modern pic¬ tures which illustrate Latin mottoes. The journalism class puts into practice the fundamentals for working on the school paper, the Philosopher. Miss Shirley Bryan points to Gary with pride as her history students study their own com¬ munity in relation to the nation. 12 Budding scientists of the future work in room 106M. Rochelle Robbins and Phil Fiacable concentrate on a lab experiment. ROOM WORK WAS HARD, BUT FUN” . . . DIFFERENT VOCATIONS PROVIDED Experience is the best teach¬ er for Pat Pearman. The Teachers ' Exploratory Course gives students the opportunity to explore the field of teach¬ ing. Jim Kindler. Ray Michalski. Camille Dufresne, Phyllis Sharrar. and Gerrie Coican prepare for future business careers by mastering the fun¬ damentals of typing. Irma Jasin, Mary Ann Metherd. and Juliana Sredno replenished their wardrobes with clothes made in sewing class. OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL’’ Don Knipp learned the art of handling an intricate band saw in one of the woodshop classes. V ' yc- V Architects of tomorrow are found in mechanical drawing classes. Seated at the draw¬ ing boards are prospective builders Frank Kemeny and Gene Lach. 15 ■ Discussing their future col¬ lege plans are Glenda Van Rosendale, Dana Spencer, Darlene Sendre, and Tamara Yermack with a college coun¬ selor. College Day is an an¬ nual guidance department project. 16 A daily bugle sounds a tribute to our flag. This pause at the beginning and end of each day is one of our most hallowed traditions. The bug ler is Tom Hutchinson. I solemnly swear Student Council officers Ger- rie Coican. Jerry Philipps. Marilyn Rose, and Ron Ven¬ tura pledge themselves to the service of their school. . . . LONG-STANDINCR . . . ATHLETIC EVENTS PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE” The grim faces of these varsity Hornets show deep concentration as their team mates match wits against the highly rated Gerts- meyer team. The choral groups sang a tribute to the football and basketball teams during the Pep Concert sponsored by the music department and held m conjunction with the annual Turkey Hop. 19 MAD AND MELLOW MUSIC PUT US Amid clouds, angels, and stars, couples at this year ' s Inaugural Ball. Seventh Heaven. paused lor an intermission to examine their programs after the grand march. The rendezvous for many stu¬ dents is the monthly stag dance sponsored by the Publications Staff. Dancers at the Turkey Hop tripped the light fantastic to celebrate the approaching- holi¬ day. Although the Homecoming game was canceled, spirits re¬ mained high and undampened. (Note the preparations to hang an Emerson player after he was stung by a Hornet ) 21 . . . FUN WAS Judy Smith, Leigh Melvin, Larry Odar, and Donna Maly enjoy their favorite indoor sport, spinning, platters. A slumber party may well be renamed a keeping-awake party. Shenanigans will continue far into the night, and many secrets will be told by these freshman girls: Karen Pittington, Cecilia Arras, Gloria Guess. Sharon Myers. Anne Stilino- vich, and Pat Gruenberg. ALSO PART OF OUR SCHOOL EXPERIENCES” Charlesa Skolds, Bill Purcell. Donna Jansen, and Dick Fox double-date for an evening of fun at the local theater. The favorite hangout of Lew Wallace students is that of the Beauty Spot. After-game crowds enjoy lively conversation about the relative prospects of our teams. Seniors traveling to Washington, D. C.. pause to reclaim their baggage at Williamsburg before embarking on the next leg of their journey. Ball State Teachers College Business Education KEEP OUT 31 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Keith Barton, vice president; Betty Epler, treasurer; Carol Uskert. secretary; and Ronn Boehlke, president. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We have just completed one of the best years of our life, our senior year. It began with a bang when we elected such capable class officers as Ronn Boehlke, president; Keith Barton, vice presi¬ dent; Carol Uskert, secretary; and Betty Epler, treasurer. Queen Lynn Longstreet reigned over the third annual homecoming celebration for our class. According to tradition we journeyed to Washington, D.C., but not according to tradition the boys outnumbered the girls on the trip. We may have come home tired, but our new feeling of belonging to the ages regenerated us for the coming school days. Was it only yesterday that we entered high school as awed freshmen? The thrills, trials, and tribulations of Freshman Week were exciting, and that was one week that will never be forgotten. We had all kinds of fun producing our freshman play, Best Foot Forward! Our wise selection of Charles Brown as president, Guy Camarata as vice president, Karen Wortley as secretary, and Bev Edwards as treasurer added much to the year. Our first dance, Cupid ' s Capers, was held early in January Our sophomore year began with the festive spirit of the Mardi Gras, our class party, and the thrill of elections. Scott Polizotto served as president with Dick Fox ejected vice president. Charlesa Skolds was secretary and Bill Purcell was treasurer that year. As juniors we were now upper-lower class- men with the privilege of attending the Prom, which was heaven itself. We wrote a new page in the traditions of Lew Wallace that junior year when we elected Scott Polizotto as our class presi¬ dent for the second consecutive term. Our other officers were Mike Fiacable, vice president; Nan¬ cy Beiriger, secretary; and Linda Given, treasurer. Remember as freshmen how we wished for graduation: Now that it is finally upon us we are sorry, and yet we are happy as all our joyful memories come back to us, and wonderful friend¬ ships remain. Through the coming years we ' ll often think of these past four years, and as the theme of our annual comes back to us, we ' ll re¬ member always our happy days Within the Walls of Wallace. 34 DOLORES ADAMS - F.T.A.. Knotts Summer formals, white coats, bids, the Crystal Ballroom, coketail parties, and early morning break¬ fasts — these are some of the things that make up that special night of nights — the Junior-Senior Prom. Traditionally held on the first Friday in May, the Prom is the only formal dance of the school year. Enjoying themselves at one of the many coke- tail parties preceding the Prom are Sue Smith, Dave Nolan, Jean McCalister, Mac Busby, Norma Burgeson, and Steve Bazin. 49 Mftbj Planning the Prom is the biggest job of the year for the junior class. Looking over a selection of possible programs are the junior class offi¬ cers: Janet Myers, secretary; Rochelle Robbins, vice president; Richard Bianco, president; and Carolyn Dawson, treasurer. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY Only one more year is left for the Class of 1957. Three wonderful years are behind this year ' s junior class. It all started their freshman year when they elected Don Hannah as presi¬ dent, Jay Moore as vice president, Jackie Matting¬ ly as secretary, and Carolyn Dawson as treasurer. Then some of their class were cast in the delight¬ ful freshman play. Cheaper by the Dozen. Spring came and the class of ' 57 ended the year with their own freshman dance, Spring Fantasy, Before they knew it a new school year was upon them. They were sophomores! Of course they wanted to make it a most successful year, so they elected Howard Fisher as president and Irma Smoot vice president. Don Hannah was the secretary with Judy Smith as the treasurer. Since the class is filled with boys and girls who love to jitterbug, they called their sophomore dance Boogie Bounce. The fall of 1955 found this lively class with an eye on the future. The nominating committee met and made sure that the most capable stu¬ dents were nominated to run for class offices. When all votes were counted, Richard Bianco was president, along with Rochelle Robbins as vice president, Janet Myers as secretary and Carolyn Dawson as treasurer. This year as juniors a solemn responsibility was placed on their shoulders . . . that of plan¬ ning the Prom. The thrill of accomplishment was theirs as dancing to the strains of Reynold Young and his Orchestra, they realized the Prom was a big success. All the necessary ingredients for the magic recipe of success have been strongly blended into this year ' s junior class. Their past school history of interest in activities will shine when their final history at Lew Wallace High School is finished. 50 JUDY AMBROSE JOY ANDERSON PAULINE ANDREY FRED ANTON J M ARCHBOLD DON ARMES BRENDA ARNOLD ROBERT AUGUSTINE JULIUS BABUSKA JUDITH BAHUN WILLIAM BALCERAK KENNETH BALL SANDRA BANZEN LOUIS BENCIE FRANCES BENKA ROBERT BERLIEN CAROL BERNS RICHARD BIANCO ALICE BLACK MARIE BLAY JOHN BOKASH THOMAS BOLDE JEAN BOLKOVATZ GEORGE BONE LORETTA BOWER CATHERINE BRCKOVICH ADRIENNE BRISKI BILL BROOKS JO ANN BRUC E DONNA BULLER RAY CARICH EDWARD CARLISLE TED CHAROCHAK LARRY CHELAP JERRY CHELLE LELAND CLINE KENNETH CLINGAN ELSIE COFFMAN GERALDINE COICAN ALAN CORNS LORNA GAIL CRAIG TOM CRULL YVONNE DAILEY JOE DALTON CAROLYN DAWSON ALLEN DAY ROSE MARIE DECKTER CHARLES DEMMON PAT DEPTA CAROL LEE DILLEY JOHN DIMOS PAT DINGMAN SANDRA DORIN PAT DOYLE JOANNE DRAG CAMILLE DUFRESNE LARRY DURBIN SANDRA EBERT BETTY EMERY DOROTHY ERICKSON PHILIP FIACABLE JUDITH FINNERTY HOWARD FISHER ORION FORD SHARON FULTON DIOGENES GALANOS LYDIA GANNON WILLIAM GEISEN BEVERLY GIFFORD PEGGY GLASSFORD CAROLE GOLBA FRED GOLBA MEGAN GREEN JOAN GUIST DENNIS GUSTIN EUGENE GYURE DON HANNAH JOE HARO JIM HART JIM HATTABAUGH 51 GERALDINE HAWRYS JANET HEGYI DONNA HERCEG RICHARD HERR DAVID HILL BOB HOLT ROBERT HORAN MICHAEL HRINDA JANET HUETTNER RUTH ANN HUFFMAN DONNA JANSEN RONNIE JONES LYNN JOSE JOHN JUERGENSEN CONNIE KAPSCH NICK KATOVICH LYNNE KELLAWAY JAMES KINDLER KAY KIRKPATRICK JUDITH KISH JAMES KLINE ARLENE KLOSOWSKI CAROL KOBZA JOHN KOBZA NANCY KOCHES PHYLLIS KOMISARCIK JAMES KONICKE JUDITH KORTHAUER STEVE KOTAKES BILL KOVACH DON KOZAK JUDY KRUZIC JOE KUCAN CAROLYN KUPKA RONALD KUPPLER SHIRLEY KURHAN JULIUS KUROWSKI WARREN LAKEBERG JUDY LAMBERT ALDO LARGURA GEORGE LASKY BERNARD LA VERY NANCY LOBO KENNETH LOCKE JUDY LYON ANGELINE MACALUSO TOM MAGDICH JEANNE MAHANEY LILLIAN MAJOR DONNA MALY ALLAN MANCE RUDY MANCE GEORGE MARKS ANNETTE MARTIN JACKIE MATTINCLY JOHN MAYER ROBERT MAYER lorna McDaniel ed McDermott CAROL MEGQUIRE MIRIAM MELVIN NORMAN MICHALSKI ROSEMARY MIKLOS JOHN MIKULICH JOE MIZERAK RITA MODROWSKI DOLORES MOORE DOROTHY MOORE JAY MOORE CARMEL MORGANO DAVID MORRIS MARY JANE MURRAY 1 ANET MYERS CHARLENE NAGY NICHOLAS NAN VICKI NEDANOVICH NADA NOVAK CHARLENE OLAFSON GWEN OLEBOS NORA OREN 52 SUSAN OREN DOROTHY OSIKA LORRAINE OWENS RONALD PAJOR DANIEL PAVICH JAMES PETRO DOLORES PIEKARZ JOAN PLUM JOHN POPOFF MARLENE POVER ANNETTE POZONOVICH JAMES RAJSICH DIANE REED FRED RENO MILTON ROADES ROCHELLE ROBBINS PAULA ROBINSON JOHN ROMANYAK JACK ROMEO MARILYN ROSE DOROTHY RUSICH DALE SANCHEZ GENE SASAK JOAN SAVOLDI ROSE SCELSI KEN SCHWARTZ ROBERT SCOTT ROGER SEDERBERG CAROLE SHEARER LINDA SHEPHARD JULIA SHEPTAK JOHN SHIELD IRVIN SIEGLE NANCY SIMKO KARL SKOLDS MARTHA SMALLEY JUDY SMITH IRMA SMOOT ELEANOR STARK GEORGE STATHAKIS HARRY STIMSON WILLIAM STINSON ILENE STYPULA ANDREW SVIHRA DONALD SZKLARSKI JAMES TEETS NAOMI THOMAS PEGGY THOMPSON D CK TIMMONS JUDY TONETSKI PAT TOTH RONALD TOTH VERNE TRINOSKEY CAROL TUCKER RICHARD TURNAK BOYD VALENTI JOHN WALES LOUANNA WALTERS JEANNINE WARDELL JERRY WIELGUS KERMIT WILER BARBARA WISNER HELGA WOLF VERA WOLF THOMAS YAROS JOE YETSKO LEONORA YOUNG JOHN YURTANAS BARBARA ZAJKOWSKI MARGARET ZAKRZEWSKI JUDITH ZANDER ROBERT ZIELINSKI HELENE ZURY Not Pictured: JO ANNE HURLEY YOLANDA PILLA 53 Conducting the first sophomore class meeting of the year are the sopho¬ more officers: Dora Hansen, secretary; Dick Clark and Larry Barlock, co presidents; Leanne Phillips, vice president; and Steve Kukoy. treasurer SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY Two down, two to go! This is the challenge that faces the sophomore class as they cross the half way mark in high school, lvanhoe. algebra, biology, Silas Marnei, autobiographies and ge¬ ometry are a few of the stumbling blocks that these courageous sophomores have faced. As freshmen they proved how much like the wise old owl they were by electing such capable class officers as lerrold Brown for president with Bill Melvin as vice president. Byron Broome was the elected secretary and Jim Emmett, treasurer. How can they ever forget the joys of that fresh¬ man year? The Fresh Jam helped start that year just right, and their freshman play, Belles on Their Toes, added just the perfect touch. This year as sophomores they have certainly kept the Lew Wallace student body buzzing. When they elected Dick Clark and Larry Barlock as co-presidents by 144 votes each, everyone was astounded by their good judgement and originali¬ ty. Leanne Phillips was vice president, Dora Hansen was secretary, and Steve Kukoy was treasurer. With the school year flowing along smoothly, the sophomore dance, Rhythm ' n Blues , blended perfectly with their class theme. Next year they will be the junior class of Lew Wallace with such ordeals as Giants in the Earth and term topics awaiting them. The much looked forward to Prom will be their biggest job. We ' re sure this sophomore class will go on mak¬ ing history at Lew Wallace, and we ' ll all be waiting and watching. 54 ROBERT AESCHLIMAN WILMA AGEE DENNIS AKERS SHAREN ALGER JERRIE ANDERSON JUDY ANDERSON GEORGE ARWOOD JIM AUDO JOHN AUSTIN DEAN BABOO RAYMOND BAGLEY SHERRON BAGLEY JIM BAKER JOE BALLARINO ETHEL BAN JACK BARATH JIM BARBOSA SARAH BARKER LARRY BARLOCK TONY BARTOS BOB BAZIN CAROLYN BECKMAN CATHERINE BECKMAN CA ROL BEDNASH GEORGE BEKAS RICHARD BELL1CH JOHN BELLINO DOLORES BENNETT WILLIAM BENTLEY NANCY BERLIEN LARRY BESS GERALD BLACK OLIVIA BOATRIGHT ANTHONY BODO BOB BRACICH JIM BRADACH CHARLES BRATINA JIM BRIDENTHALL BYRON BROOME MOLLIE BROWN GEORGE BRUGOS CHARLES BRYNIARSKI ROBERT BUCHKO ARLENE BULZA RAYMOND BUMBALES MELINDA BURCHAM BEVERLEY BURTON JIM CAMARATA JACK CAMELI RJCKIE CHAS SUSAN CHNUPA KIKI CHRISTOFF DICK CLARK PATRICIA COADY NICK COMINOS WESLEY CRIST DAVID CUDDINGTON BOB CZARNECKI LOUISE DECKTER CAROL DeJARNATT SUE DELICH BONNIE DePRA TERRY DEVANEY NANCY DeVILLIERS DELORES DICKSON RAY DOBBS JIM DOST GLADYS DuBROJA LEONA DUFRESNE JOHN DUNDA MARY DURKIN BARBARA ECKHART BILL EDWARDS DOROTHY EISENHAUER HOLLY EISENHAUER BOB ELSNER SUZANNE EMERY JIM EMMETT JOHN ERDELAC GERALD ERDIE 55 CHARLES ETCHASON SHARON EYEARS ROBERT FALATIC RUTHANN FALATIC DONNA FARBER LEONARD FATTORE PRESTON FIGGE ANN FLYNN CHUCK GALLION MARY GIFFORD SHARON GLIVAR LARRY GOLDBERG JIM GRECO EDITH GREEN TOM GREEN GERALD GRENNES JOYCE GRITTON MARGARET GROGAN CAROL GRUEBL MARILYN GUSTAFSON DORA HANSEN JOHN HARKNESS LORRAINE HENRY ANTOINETTE HERBACH JOEL HERSCH CHUCK HOLM MARY ANN HORAN LORRAINE HORWITH JOE HOWELL PATRICIA HOYLE DALE HUBER LOIS HUCK SHARON HUFFMAN JUDY IVANCEVICH BILL JACLACK JOHN JAGER MARY ROSE JAGER CAROL JANDA ANN JANJECIC PAUL JENKINS GLYNDA JOHNSON MARJORIE JOHNSON FRANK JONAITIS ROMAL JONES SHIRLEY JONES CAROL KACIR NICK KALAMIR DELORES KAPELA JOE RENDERS JOYCE KENNETT GEORGE KEPSHIRE BENJAMIN KIBERT SALLY KIEFER FRANK KLESCEWSKI MARILYN KLICH BEVERLY KNAPP MERTON KNAPP PETER KNOESS WILMA KNOOP TED KOLCZAK TOM KONICKE BILL KONZELMAN BEVERLY KOS TOM KOSCHO DICK KOVAL JOHN KOZAR JANET KRANTZ ALBERT KROL STEVE KUKOY CAROLYN KUPKA ELEANORE KUPKA ANDREW KURDELAK MIKE LAZARO TONY LEONE J M LIGOCKI JUDY LIPSHULCH DAVID LLOYD JOE LOSCARO JERRY LOUGH LYDIA LYON 56 JANICE MacGOWAN CAROL MACKLEY SANDRA MAGDICH JEANETTE MAGDOS PEGGY MAHORNEY STANLEY MAJOR MIKE MARLOW TOM MARSZALEK MIKE MARTAKIS BOB MARTIN MAURICE MASSA GERALD MAYES michele McCarthy PATRICIA McCORKEL bill McDonald nancy McGinnis DENNIS McGLOTHLEN marian McKinney JOE MELNIK BILL MELVIN GERALDINE MOCAN GLORIA MONTERRUBIO HAROLD MOSES SARA MURAWSKI PAT MURPHY GEORGE NAMOVICH TED NERING BETTY NIX MARLENE NIXON ROBERT NOLEN DON NOTARO MARTIN NOVOSEL GEORGE ODISHOO RICH O ' DONNELL DONNA ODUM JUDY OLSON JUDY ORESKOVIC MAGDALINE ORNELAS TOM ORNELAS TOM OWENS RAYMOND PALL ROSALIE PAMPALONE LOIS PATRIZI JOETTA PAVELTICH JUDY PAVICH MIKE PAVLOFF KEITH PEARMAN JEAN PETRO VICTORIA PETRUSHA DON PHILLIPS LEANNE PHILLIPS MARJORIE PHILLIPS NEWELL PHILLIPS GERRY PILLA FRANK PIRILLO JOE PLESAC ANGELINE POLIZZOTTO LEONARD POSAVAC JUDY PRITCHARD DOLORES RADULOVICH GEORGE RAKICH HILKE RASCHKE SHAROL REDMOND SUE REESE ROBERTA REGAL JACK RENDEL ROBERT REYNOLDS RALPH RICHARDS LINDA RICHIGER PETER RIZZO MARGARET RONDINELLI KENNETH ROSE RICHARD ROSE HENRY ROSKOWSKI BARBARA ROTH MIKE RUKAVINA DOROTHY RZEPKA MARY LOU RZEPKA STANLEY SALIWONCZYK VINCY SANNICOLA 57 ROSEMARY SA RICH RICHARD SARUDY VICTOR SCHIRALLI JUDY SCHMITT GARY SCHNEIDER MARY SCHNITZLER CHARLOTTE SCHULTIES DENNIS SCHWARTZ HAROLD SCOTT GERALDINE SEBO ROGER SEILS DARLENE SENDRE ALBERTA SETLAK JEANETTE SETLAK PATRICIA SHAY TOM SHAY RON SHERIDAN SANDRA SHERMAN BOB SHINOVICH ALEXANDRA SIMION ROSEMARY SIMKO CHARLENE SMITH NORMAN SMITH ROBIN SMITH CHARLES SNYDER DENNIS SOFIAK BILL SOMMERS PETER SONTSAS DOUG SORBA KEITH SORBA SAM SORBELLO DANA SPENCER ESTHER SPLITTGERBER JOE STANTON SHARON STECH JOAN STEFANKIEWICZ NICK STEFFUS STEVE STEININGER JOYCE STILINOVICH DALE STIMACK MARGARET STINAR SHARON SULICH JOHN SVETICH PAT TAUBER ROLAND TAYLOR SHIRLEE TAYLOR GERALD TER RY PHYLLIS THOMAS RONALD THOMAS BILL TIMMERMAN JOHN TOMICH SALLY TORRES RALPH TOTH JAMES TRIPP GERALD TROXEL NORAMAE TURLEY JIM URSTA CHARLENE USKERT ROSEMARY VALENCIA JOHN VALENTI GLENDA VAN ROSENDALE CARL VERNIA BARBARA VICIAN MARY ANN VIGNA TOM VILD BARBARA VITALONE WESLEY VOGT JIM VONDERHAAR ROSE VUKOBRATIC DORIS WANHORST SANDRA WATTS TOM WHITEMAN LEW WILER KAREN WINROTTE JOYCE WISE KARIN WOLF DIANE WOODVILLE LLEW WOYTOW CAROLYN YAKUBEC ROBERTA YAMTICH 58 TAMARA YERMACK JOSEPHINE ZANONI LORETTA ZAPINSKI JOYCE ZAVISKI SUSAN ZEZULE BILL ZIMA JANICE ZUBRIK BOB ZYTKO Not Pictured: BOB BURNS JUDY EPPS RAY KLUS TOM PODNAR BILL SARPOS WALLACE FROM FORTY-FIFTH AVENUE 59 Discussing the many activities of Freshman Week are the freshman officers: Ed Stark, secretary; FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY A year ago the class of ' 59 entered Lew Wal¬ lace High School as green freshmen, but as we all can plainly see, they no longer look and act as Freshies. The thrilling new experiences throughout this freshman year have shaped them slowly into the next sophomore class of Lew Wallace High. The first big hurdle was the never to be equalled Freshman Week. Among many things, the girls were found by their big sisters and entertained graciously at the Girls ' Club Sock Dance. Another step along the way was their first class meeting presided over by their class offi¬ cers. Bruce Polizotto was president and Martha Melvin was vice president with Ed Stark as sec¬ retary and Malcolm Stinson as treasurer. This year the right to attend the high school dances was extended to them. Also they were able to hold a dance of their very own. It was entitled Winter Wonderland, and the weath er outside was as beautiful as the inside decorations. The high point of the whole year for the class of ' 59 was the curtain opening on the freshman play, June Mad. Those two unforgettable char¬ acters, Penny played by Rosemary Lashenik and Carolyn McHargue, and Chuck Rhodes and Phil¬ lip Paris as Chuck, will always be remembered by those who saw this delightful comedy. Yes, the freshmen have just passed a big milestone in their lives. Let us hope that they all keep up their good work. 60 GERRIE ADAMS PEGGY AIMUTIS CHUCK ALEXANDER CONNIE ALEXANDER JACK ALVAREZ ALBERT ANDERSON JAMES ANDERSON ROBERT ANDERSON JANICE ANDREWS LA RRY John Mayer, a Wallace student and polio victim, presents the trophy for the winning team to Jim Muldoon. chairman and Grace Zury and Ron Sendre, co-chairmen. Looking on is Scott Polizotto who served as citywide chairman for the drive. Peanuts! Peanuts! Shell out for Polio — buy your peanuts! Such was the cry of the 250 Wallace students who, on Saturday, January 21, 1956, donated their time to raise funds for the Teen-age Polio Drive. These ambitious teens invaded Glen Park and part of downtown Gary to sell peanuts to everyone in sight. People on streets, in stores, offices, and motor vehicles were asked to contribute in order to receive the colo.fully wrapped bags of peanuts. The one day drive, along with a stag dance and donations from Glen Park merchants, collected a total of $2,363.69 — the most money collected by any district in the entire state of Indiana. In recogni¬ tion of these efforts, a trophy was presented to the Glen Park district. City wide chairman for the drive was Scott Polizotto, with John Mayer as honorary chairman. Jim Muldoon proved an able campaign leader for the Glen Park district. Grace Zury and Ron Sendre assisted him as co-chairmen. As part of the fund-raising campaign, a stag dance was held at the 43rd Avenue Presbyterian Church, where a record crowd of over 400 people danced, ate peanuts, and drank pop. Everyone did a job of which we can be justly proud. 67 ACTIVITIES Within the Walls of Wallace . . . Carol Golbesky, George Lasky, and Jim Muldoon cast their ballots for Homecoming Queen while Mike Pav- loff. and Roberta Willfond decide which of the pretty contestants should receive their votes. Many couples enjoyed the first semi- formal dance of the social season, the Inaugural Ball. The grand march was crowded and festive. The Senior vs. Teacher volleyball game is one of the activities spon¬ sored by the Student Council to raise money for the S.O.S. Humanity Drive. Getting in a little pre-qame practice are John Largura, Marge Nedanovich. Ron Sendre. Coach Joe Black, and Coach Richard Polk. Checlpng over final plans before the beginning of Activity Day are Bob Scott. Jackie Mattingly, and Everett Fisher STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council may be referred to as the Business Manager of Lew Wallace. Under the guidance of Mr. William Vorwald, the council ably supervises all school events and school organizations. The Homecoming celebration, organized by the Student Council, was well attended by the student body. The council success¬ fully supervised the traditional Inaugural Ball, the S.O.S. Humanity Drive, and the in¬ auguration of class officers. All these events were climaxed by Activity Day, a Student Council project which honors students who have offered valuable scholastic and social service to the school. The Student Council holds weekly Wednesday meetings within the walls of room 100M. The council is composed of offi¬ cers, chosen by the student body, and home¬ room representatives. All students have a chance to present their ideas and sugges¬ tions for the improvement of the school. A CAPPELLA The harmonious renditions sung by the A Cappella Choir are the end results of long hours of practice. Few realize how long the choir rehearses because the choir room i s located in a very secluded spot — the only room on the fourth floor. The purpose of the choir is to provide an opportunity for high school students to participate in a choral organization. This year the choir performed at the Pep Concert, the Orchestra Concert, the Spring Concert, the Christmas Vespers, and the All-City Music Festival. These music lovers know their do, re, mi ' s backwards, forwards, and maybe even sideways. They can be depended on to present a polished per¬ formance. This year the Glee Club performed at the Pep Concert, the Spring Con¬ cert, the Christmas Vesper service, and the Commencement service. The choir also sang at the All-City Music Festival and in the Northwestern Indiana Festival Chorus. Officers for this year were Paula Jo Robinson, president, and Pat Daniel, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Mary Frances Busby, teacher of the class, offers this little bit of Shakespearean advice to Forensics members as they prepare to enter speech contests or discuss political issues. The purpose of the class is to learn and practice techniques in discussion and public speaking. This year the activities of the class included the sponsorship of the annual Calumet Student Congress and the sponsorship of the Lew Wallace Round Table, a series of discussions broadcasted over the Wallace radio station. Members of the class also attended the Purdue Legislative Assembly. Officers for this year were Ken Todd, president, and Ann Flynn, secretary. FORENSICS The seating of large crowds in the auditorium is efficiently and quietly handled by the Auditorium Council. Without the help of the Council all would be chaos. The social activities of the Council include an initiation following a formal induction, an annual banquet, a potluck supper, and the giving of a gift to a needy family at Easter time. SENIOR DRAMA Late hours, dinners consisting of cold hamburgers and warm cokes, memorizing lines, unfinished homework — all these things play a part in the life of a Senior Drama student during play rehearsals. A little social activity is sprinkled into the life of the drama student. There are cast parties, initiation parties, and beach parties. The class goes into Chicago several times a year to see the latest Broadway plays. Officers for this year were Barbara Smith, president; Elaine Terzes, vice president; Grace Zury, secretary; Ron Ventura, stage manager; Brenda Arnold, business manager; and Helene Zury, press agent. Miss Beatrice Sandies directs the class. PUBLICATIONS STAFF These are some of the hardest working students in Lew Wallace. They devote much of their time to work in the journalism room. Their journalistic life centers around two major publications, the Philosopher and the Quill and Blade. The journalism students not only produce these, but they sell subscriptions to them as well. Another publication that the journalism class put out was the student directory. Some in the class handle the calling cards and invitations for graduating seniors. The purposes of the journalism class are to offer an opportunity to students who want experience and to offer services to the school. Mrs. Kathryn Welsh sponsors the staff. Row 1. G. Gruenberg, G. Put on the baby spots! Curtains! Where are the new gelatins? Pull down the asbestos when Act 1 ends! Those are the most common expressions found in the stage crew vernacular. The orders are usually emphatically whispered among membeis of the crew during a Lew Wallace production. The auditorium is the stage hand ' s second home because he ' s there so often. The typical duties of a stage hand include operating the switchboard, operating the curtains, putting up flats, and repairing equipment. Mrs. Mattie Hannsz supervises the stage crew. In this area of heavy traffic the job of maintaining safety is not an easy one. The keen sight of the patrol boys and their ability to spot danger saves parents and teachers from worrying over the safety of Lew Wallace children. Rain or shine the volunteer squad patrols school crossings each morning as students come to school, at noon, and after school as students go home. Mr. Everett Hartsough sponsors the squad. Row 1. D. PHILOSOPHER STAFF 214M, a place of hustle, bustle, and noise; a place with a constant hum — 214M, the journalism room. The journalism room is a beehive of perpet¬ ual activity. Amateur journalists swarm around in the room, busy as bees. There ' s so much to do — articles to write, copy to check, material to type, and assignments to be made. Everyone in the class has a special job which varies with the issues. Editors, report¬ ers, feature writers, editorial writers, and room decorators are the occupations in the journalism class. The three page editors and the managing editor do their level best to induce the reporters to be accurate and punctual with articles. Once articles are turned in, the editors work themselves frantic, — it ' s only a hop, skip, and a jump to the time when the paper must go to the printer. One fine day the paper comes back from the printer. Everyone, including the adviser, makes a beeline for the big brown package of Philoso¬ phers. Their reward is seeing the results of all their hard work in actual print. Circulation Department Chairmen: Janet Myers and Irma Smoot. Sports Reporters: Joe Sever. Tom Metcalf, and Don Wagner. QUILL AND BLADE STAFF 92 As you scan these pages, may you be pleasantly transported from the present back through time, back Within the Walls of Wallace. This was the uppermost thought in the minds of the annual staff as they slaved to complete the annual. The club picture editor, Linda Van Cleave, often ran down the hall with her assistant, Miriam Melvin, trying to round up club members and show them How to Smile. Forrest Boatright, the Quill and Blade photographer, was The Most Patient Man of the Year and Darlene Spindler, the faculty editor, was the tactful one on the staff. They had to be. The class editors, Sonia Martinson, Caroline Olszewski, Phyllis Komis- arcik, Mary Gariup, and Lynne Kellaway, had a strange obsession. When all the student pictures for the annual were lost, destroyed, or burned, they had to go around, grab students, put dozens of pictures before their eyes, and say, Do you know who they are? The club copy editor, Helen Zury, chased after club sponsors as she tried to get a new insight on clubs. The student life copy editor, Carole Shearer, whispered to herself, Now what does this picture suggest to me? The editor-in-chief, Gretchen Gruenberg, was kept busy from dawn to dark. Many times she fanned away curious students who wanted to see the annual pictures. Her catchy phrase was, Now I ' m REALLY mad! All this Within the Walls of Wallace and 214M. 1955- ' 56 QUILL AND BLADE STAFF Editor-in-Chief Gretchen Gruenberg Picture Co-ordinator Forrest Boatright Club Editor Linda Van Cleave Assistant , Miriam Melvin Opening Section Copy, Carole Shearer Activities Copy Helen Zury Senior Class Copy Karen Wortley Class Histories Linda Mahorney Jean McCalister Faculty Editor Darlene Spindler Class Editors — Senior Class Sonia Martinson Junior Class Caroline Olszewski Sophomore Class Phyllis Komisarcik Freshman Class Mary Gariup Lynne Kellaway Sports Editor John Clark Assistants — Jerry Philipps John MacLennan Joe Sever Don Wagner Tom Metcalf Mike Datisman Photographers John Shield Ken Reibly Advisers Mrs. Kathryn Welsh Mr. Mitchell Gerbick Class Editors: Mary Gariup. But the Wallace Homecoming spirit could not be diluted by the downpour. The excitement began with nominations for Queen by the homerooms and the football team. The pretty quintet included Bev Ed¬ wards, Arlene Land, Lynn Longstreet, Char- lesa Skolds, and Sue Smith. Excitement mounted to a high pitch Wednesday night when the football players and Homecoming Queen candidates were introduced at a rousing pep rally. The excite¬ ment reached its peak on Friday at the couple dance as Letitia Perrotta, the 1954 Queen, crowned a radiantly happy Lynn Longstreet. When the game was finally played, Emerson won, 13-0. HOMECOMING GAME HOMECOMING DANCE 101 GOLF There is no greater thrill in sports than hitting a booming drive or sinking a long putt. Golf has been a varsity sport at Lew Wallace since 1949, and under the direction of Coach Don Polly our teams have always shown up well on the fairways. (L to R). E. Luksus, P. Derr, K. Krooswyk, M. Dave Harkness, Chuck Lindsay, Gary Wilson, and John Wagner teamed up in the free-style relay to finish second in the Conference meet and third in the State meet. The loss of these and other seasoned swim¬ mers will undoubtedly hurt, but Coach Don Polly can count on his younger boys, who gained valuable experience. (L to R ). J. Gulliford. D. Harkness, S.
