The Freshman play, Rip Van Wink1e , proved an enjoyable treat. Although this was the year many of our future socialites attended their first couple dance, the biggest social shindig was the annual Freshman party. The very successful Sophomore year starred an all male cast of Iim Evans as president: Charles Despain, vice-president: Tom Hannah, secretary: and Ioel Page, treasurer. Everyone was in the right spirit, The Christmas spirit, as the Sophs wrapped up a nice profit from their sale of Christmas wrap- ping paper. On a snowy December night the Stu- dents danced at their Snowflake Frolic in the gayly decorated gym. Upperclassmen at last! To lead diem through their third year, the Iuniors elected Ioel Page, presi- KQ, - dent: Ed Marvin, vice-president: LaVerne Kostelnik, secretary: and Ioan Tomko, treasurer. The Iunior class helped make the 1951 Iunior-Senior prom a success by having a large number of couples attend. On the last day of school the Iuniors had the best time of their lives as they wore their tattered pants. laceless shoes, and beat up hats on their unsched- uled Hobo Day . A very popular slate of officers, Ioe Capua, president: lack Targett, vice-president: Ioan Tomko, secretary: and Ioel Page, treasurer, were chosen to serve during the last and best year. All the Seniors who went on the Washington trip had an educa- tional, interesting, and fun-packed week. The social highlight of the year was the Iunior-Senior prom, held on May 2, in the Crystal Ballroom. All too soon came Baccalaureate, Class Day, and Commence- ment. In facing the waiting world, the class of '52 holds many pleasant memories of fellow students and teachers. Three years ago they started their high school career guided by their president, Steve Djakovich: vice-president, Mitch Kralis: secretary, Linda Goodwin: and treasurer, Iudy High. Don Davidson, Shirley Barnes, Rosemary Moore, and Barbara Kapella proved promising Thespians of the group when the class play, Seventeenth Summer , was presented. At the Holly Hop history was made when the boys actually danced with the girls. In their Sophomore year, the class of '53 chose Richard Lasky to lead them through their second year of high school with the aid of Pat Gabriel, vice-president: Pat Ornich, secretary: and Ralph McFann, treasurer. This successful year was climaxed by the Starlight Fantasy , their Sophomore hop. The Iunior-Senior prom replaced class -parties, and the poise of an upperclassman replaced the underclassman fidgets. Yes, the class of '53 had crossed the gulf. They began their Iunior year by choosing a representative group of officers: president, Mitch Kralisg vice-president, Frank Nicksic: secretary, Nancy Cook: and treasurer, Iosephine Macaluso. The class of 1953 is on its way - - - it won't be long now. Among these new faces were those of Don Strimbu, Charles Ventura, Ioan Baker, and Don Doneff. At this time they were elected to lead their class as president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. The first social event in the Frosh spotlight was the Freshman Frolic. The greenies danced to records in a brightly decorated gym. Next came the annual Frosh play, the enjoyable Indian Captive . Ioan Sparks and Mary Louise Koss represented Eleanore, the captive, and Bob Davis took the part of Cornplanter, the Indian. This Freshman play, as other Freshman plays, will never be forgotten. Sophs at lastfupper-lower classmen! This year, Peter Plazony, president: Dorothy Kouvelas, vice-president: Roberta Mattingly, secretary: and Sam Uzelak, treasurer were elected as leaders of the class. The Sophomore hop, The Icicle Spree , was the next bit of entertainment that the class enjoyed. This class really went all out in decorations and favors to make the hop a hopping success. They began the year by electing a capable group of officers with James Tarpo, president: Iames Fattore, vice-president: Carolyn Smith, secretary: and Sandra Jackson, treasurer. Freshman Week was a new and exciting activity and the Freshmen thought it was a wonderful success. The next big event on the Frosh calendar was the Snowbal1 Iamborie , the annual Freshman dance. They had a real dance band and all the trimmings. They felt that their dance was the best of the year. During the second semester rehearsals began. The Freshies started in on the Freshman play, Meet Me In St. Louis. They were amazed at the large audiences and they said, We did it! Yes, the Freshies have done it again. Good luck in your coming years as the Seniors of '56. r kk.. N YI, 0- in 'df Sig, lt. kate 3, A fqif I f 5 'Ml I X, x s. K I' 3 5 . in A N s 5. 5 -i ii f QM!! Du 'S x ... X 1 .M , gg... sv + Q. if . These are the remarks you are likely to hear if you should drop in to room 2l4M any time between 1:50 and 9:00 P. M. In the back of the room you will see a table marked Editors . There you will find five overworked, haggard characters that are almost dead from exhaustion: but work they must, for the paper must come out on time. - In another corner the exchange editor sits licking little red stamps while the circulation manager searches through her files for a subscriber's name. The cartoonist is getting sun stroke from the high powered mimeoscope while drawing cartoons, and the reporters are all frantically counting words. Come one beautiful day fevery two weeks? the PHILOSOPHER is done and the finished product is passed out to the stu- dent body and faculty. We work and we work' The live long day To put out the Philosopher Without any pay But we don't grumble Or ever complain For at last we've found out Our work's not in vain The fine finished product ls our big reward And another week's issue ls triumphantly scored. Writing songs is not their line, but thinking up song titles to go along with the theme of the annual has been a part of the staff's musical ability. Their full time job has been the act of putting out the annual and what a hair tearing, fingernail- biting task it has been. Della Phillips and Bette Paterson, the copy-editors, revise copy far into the night Con Sunday's tool, while Donna McColly and Tom Hannah turn black and white from checking pictures. Bill Hall and Terry Tchoukaleff did the art work just for fun. And last, but not least, Mr. George Katz who suffered with, for, and by us, at all hours of the day and night as we frequently called upon him for the pictures. He helped us with all our photography and to him and his staff goes all the credit for the pictures in this book. FOOTBALL The Lew Wallace football squad broke even in their eight game card during the '51 season. Switching to a new style of football this last season, a predominately senior team showed flashes of brilliance, but lacked the consistent scoring punch that wins games. They placed fifth in the conference race and second in the city chase. Highlights during the season were wins over Gary Roosevelt, 28-7, and Horace Mann, 13-B. Added honor was brought to the Hornet eleven by the nomination of Ioel Page to first team center on the United Press Newspaper poll. Stan Marovich was given honorable mention at defensive end in the same poll. Freslunen FIRST ROW: I. Fattore, 11. wordeil, A. Pampalone, F. Herzog I. Allegretti, I. Klodzen, P. Kovach. A. Kepchar. CROSS-COUNTRY Another sparkling season of cross-country has been added to the school records. This was a year which contained a fine group of hustling and spirited athletes that gave everything they had when it counted the most. Competing in one of the toughest sports in high school, the '51 harrier squad completed their season by winning 3 meets and losing 8. TRACK Where there's a will, there's a way. This goes for our Hornet Thinclads, for they trained very hard to win and proper training is half the battle. This season's schedule included Conference and City Indoor Meets, Goshen Relays, Conference and City Outdoor Meets, Sectionals, Regionals and State Meets. Track Team FIRST ROW: Coach kt. rouc, R. The cheerleaders had the spectators all peppy and 'rarin' to go with our traditional yells. Wallace has had one of the best yell sec- tions we have ever had because of the fine work of our cheerleaders. Miss A. Hannagan is their sponsor.
