ECHOES Levittown Memorial High School Levittown, New York 3 Time quickly passes by. If only we could talk again ... 4 We laughed and talked of things to come. Someway I know III see you shining again. Vie Moody Blues 6 10 It seems like only yesterday I gazed through the glass ... 12 13 A dedication tolls Who would have hnown During dim and distant times Jhat we ivould confront A sad and emgsty reality And emerge smiling as one? Urortt whence did um derive tJhe strength and imagination Ho forge this memorable year And alt of its special foi s JSut from each other? cfhd why did me strive When Utile seemed possible And all that we hadyrtanned And whom shall we praise When the lime has grassed And we remember fondly Qhe joys of thisyear... H ut each one eg us: dhis was our year 3om in our dreams lived through our lives And uniguely our own Jsecause mt relieve In us. I lj I rtnuli X. Trrzui 15 16 17 Administration And Faculty 19 Superintendent of Schools We Americans believe that tomorrow will be a better dav and we are surprised when we encounter someone who thinks otherwise. This optimistic outlook is a result of the fact that most of our ancestors chose to leave other places to come here in the expectation of a better life than the one they knew, and in the main they realized their dreams. In our family photo albums, books and films, we are fond of looking l ack to re-examine their hardships and triumphs. We enjoy the sentiment connected with our yearning for the simplicity of earlier times. However, by reconsidering our inheritance, we reinforce our l elief that we too will prevail over The slin$i and arrows of outrageous fortune , and we look forward to rewards proportionate to our efforts to achieve them. This is why the time of graduation is called commencement. Reaching your long destined goal, you now find thoughts of the near future challenging the comfortable routines of your high school years. Even as you relive the events and encounters portrayed in your yearbook, you have begun to consider the experience of departure. Whatever your destination, you are looking forward to traveling toward it by planning and effort, with perhaps a little good luck to help you arrive at it. It is my pleasure to congratulate you upon your arrival at this milestone of your lives, and to wish you a successful journey over the roads you are now preparing to travel. I . James R. Camrite 20 Daniel Corritore President Thomas Kuhn Vice-President James Ward Secretary Norman Murray I-enore London Nelson Goldlrerg Harvey Sands Board of Education Mr. Francis X. Trezza 1 have spent approximately seventeen years in public- education, eleven of those years as a teacher and administrator at Levitt own Memorial High School. I can tell you that in all those years none of the experiences have l een as challenging and exciting as this one. 1 think it only appropriate that this year's Echoes be dedicated to the class of 1979. In many ways this year has l een ! oth a challenging and rewarding one for all of you. 1 have come to know and love so many of you, as individuals and as a group. 1 can ! arely express the sense of gratitude and appreciation that I feel in my heart for each and ever)’ one of you. You have made incredible efforts at making this, your senior year, a special and important one in your life. You should know that you have succeeded in making this year one of the most memorable in my life. As you look forward to a lifetime that will most certainly be filled with new problems and additional challenges. I am certain that you are l etter able to welcome them and overcome whatever obstacles you may encounter. One of the things that 1 believe most strongly is that every individual is better and stronger for each of the challenges and tasks with which he or she is confronted. You know better than most people just what that means. Congratulations and love. Francis X. Trezza 22 To the Members of the Class of 1979: Not too long ago you traveled the road of life as children, stopping at Memorial with the materials to build a lamp of light and knowledge. It was our intention to help you, not always in the way you wanted, or felt best. Sometimes we pushed, sometimes we pulled, sometimes we guided your unskilled hand. There were times that we just waited and watched as you learned to build your lamp. Now that we come to one of the many cross- roads of life, we part. You carry the lamp you have built — may it burn brightly to show you the way along the road you have chosen. You came to us as children and you leave as the young adults of today — the leaders of tomorrow. Best Wishes for Success in all that you Undertake, Robert J. Enderle Mr. Robert J. Enderle Assistant Principal 24 Jr. High Administration James Garvey Principal Never look behind you — Someone may be catching up said Satchel Paige, one time baseball immortal. So also must the Senior Class look ahead as they make their own lives and the lives of others more meaningful. To each of you, I express my very Ijest wishes and I thank you for your positive contributions to our school and community. James V. Garvey Joseph McDonald Assistant Principal Though Graduation Day brings a time crowded with warm memories of days gone by, it also brings with it a vision of the road that stretches before us. You are fortu- nate to see that road with the clear, sharp eyes of youth — optimistic, undaunted and undoubting. Please accept my warmest congratulations for all that you have accomplished and my sincere hopes that your dreams and ambitions will be fulfilled. I thank you for sharing those dreams with me. Determination and participation made the seniors successful. Just in our senior year alone we sold over 65 cases of candy canes, held concerts, and many more fund-raising activities. We hope to reach our goal of $4()(X). The senior prom is set for May 24, and to lie held at the Huntington Town House. Our many thanks to the superb supervision of Mr. Bruce Baldwin and Miss Donna Ditchik for keeping the class together. The senior class has l een working together as a team for the past 3 years, with each year getting letter and l etter. We hope as individuals everyone will reach their own goals in whatever their future plans are. Thanks to everyone for helping us to reach ours- Mr. Bruce Baldwin — Advisor 42 The Way We Were Memories, like the corners of my mind. Misty water colored mem- ories of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind. Smiles we gave to one another of the way we were. Can it l e that it was all so simple then, or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me, would we, could we? Memories may be beautiful and yet What’s too painful to remem- ber we simply choose to forget. So it’s the laughter, we will re- member, whenever we remember the way we were. The way we were. Marvin Hamlisch 43 LI Bob Schreib Chris McKinney Debbie Roesch Gretchcn Schmidt Dennis Brigj? STRAAIK DISTRICT 130 Electronics The P.T.A. Brunch 133 This Page Sponsored by The Class of 79 From the desk of Mr. B ... The graduating seniors of Memorial High School will have memories of very unusual high school experiences. After two years on austerity with its attendant problems, and last years heavy- snow storm, this year was added the long teacher's strike. These disniptions of the normal educational process the past three years are events that will l e recalled whenever the graduates of Memorial gather. The athletic program also suffered with its cancellations of some teams, problems with old uniforms and equipment, and reduced team rosters. This past fall the entire athletic schedule was cancelled due to the strike. The vollcvl all team after enjoying some great seasons, had a losing season for the first time in many years. Also recording a losing season was the Wrestling team. However. Memorial did l eat l oth Mac Arthur H. S. and Division Ave. H. S. in dual matches, which is always a pleasure. We also finished in 2nd place in the Holiday Wrestling Tournament held at MacArthur H.S. The bright spot for the winter season was the Boy's Basketball Team. While the won-lost record was not noticeably goex). this year’s team will stand out as one of the most exciting and inspired teams playing in any sport we have had at Memorial H.S. Mention must also lie made of the return of enthusiastic school spirit at Memorials athletic contests. This was particularly evident at our basketball games, led by our Phantom Fans . The playoff game at Plainview H.S. had to be seen to l e lxdieved. While our winter team records were not up to Memorial’s usual top teams, there were some outstanding individual performances. Bob Schreib, in addition to playing basketl all. competed and placed third in the Conference Winter Track 300 yard run. lister Schlot‘ii places third in Nassau County for the Diving competition. These achievements stand out as Memorial did not field teams in those sports, giving the boys a handicap by not competing in contests during the regular season. All League honors were won by Lisa Federico in Volleyball, and Shaun Smith in Basketball. Joe Prudente won 4th place in Bowling for individual Bowlers in Nassau County. This means that Joe was the 4th liest bowler in Nassau among the hundreds of high school bowlers. Bright hopes for winning seasons at Memorial this year rest on the spring teams. The Baseball team, with the return of the outstanding pitching staff, should keep Memorial among the conference leaders. The Lacrosse team is expected to return to championship level with many fine players returning from last season. Girls Softball also has bright prospects with the return of most of the key players. Participation in Athletics in High School goes bvond the won and lost records of teams or individuals. The thrill of competition, the friendship of teammates and opponents, plus the enjoyment of the athletic events makes for a full and exciting school life. Even though the Seniors had so many unusual things happen during their high school years in school and athletics, they will look back and remember the years at Memorial with mixed emotions. Some good and some bad memories will remain, but the good times will always stand out. Best of luck to the Class of 1979 136 Basketball Bob Bracco, Mike Fazio. Bob Flannigan. Bob Schreib. We have had many setbacks and obstacles to overcome, but it has l een well worth the effort. We began in November with a large staff, many of whom lost interest. However, we managed quite well with the small staff that remained. We would like to thank Mr. Zacker, our advisor, whose humor helped us to laugh off our numerous problems. We would like to thank our entire staff, especially Margaret Tumbarello, our undercover editor-in-chief. We want to wish the graduating class of 1979 the best in life, and much happiness in the future. Thanks again for making it all worthwhile. Sr. Capo — Advisor This years Spanish Club has been very suc- cessful, with an all-time high membership of more than 50. Together we enjoyed both cul- tural and social activities. For Christmas we held a Spanish fiesta, having each member bring a different Spanish delicacy: arroz con polio, paella, chili con carne and much more. The club met every Tuesday to work on our Spanish magazine, which was a huge success. Each meeting was opened with the tasting of a different, homemade Spanish appetizer. To wrap up our year, we held a dinner dance at “Los Porches” (the best Spanish cuisine on Long Island.) As a farewell to Spanish Club seniors, it’s customary to spend the day after graduation visiting the points of interest per- taining to Spanish culture in New York City. Nora Velez, Dolores Mitchell Roltert M sone — Advisor Spotlight's new look was no accident; it was strictly the result of hard work. Students who recognized that the school paper is their voice, put in many extra hours to produce a newspaper everyone could lie proud of. Many staff members gained experience in both writing and produc- tion, handling several jobs for one issue. It is the wish of the staff and editors that more students will become involved. We realize that the newspaper will only l e as interesting and excellent as involved students make it. We want to expand our staff and scope. Spotlights survival as well as every other activity depends on Memorial's students. We have faith that our new beginning will lead to a bigger, better Spotlight in the future. 159 Student Organization The S.O. this year is being reorga- nized to better represent and respond to the needs of the Levittown Me- morial student body. To this end an emphasis is being placed on homeroom representation and student total organi- zation.
