Kathy Gorman ECHOES Levittown Memorial High School Levittown, New York 1978 Silver Anniversary Issue Alone; we are individuals Together; we are one 2 I played music to a seagull and the ocean roared with laughter. The warm breezes are whispering sweet things to my soul. Would you like to join me? Come sit by my side. It's all right. — Donna Siano 3 And I'm looking for space And to find out who I am And I'm looking to know and understand It's a sweet, sweet dream 4 Sometimes I'm almost there Sometimes I fly like an eagle and Sometimes I'm deep in despair... — John Denver 5 6 7 8 9 ... We know where we're going for we've heard the new winds blowing and we've got to know for ourselves it won't help to listen to someone else ... - England Dan and John Ford Coley 11 % A truly fine teacher does not just instruct his students; he shares his knowledge with them. He is not just a machine, spouting information: he is a human being who gives of himself. He is a warm, understanding, humorous, and interesting friend. You have shown these qualities in your coaching, your willingness to work after school with stu- dents, and your dedicated involvement with the school as a whole. The quality which really sets you apart, however, is the way in which you've shared your own experiences with us, making us more aware of the world outside as it really is. For these and many other reasons, we dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Kemnitzer, with respect, gratitude, and love. 16 17 Together we began school here in 1%5 and we leave together when you graduate and I retire as superintendent. We depart from the large group of people and places called the Levittown Schools after having shared many common experiences as members of this group. In this thirtieth year of Levittown's existence and twenty-fifth anniversary of Levittown Memorial High School, it is appropriate for me to dwell briefly on the relationship between individuality and community by way of wishing this year's graduates farewell and good luck. Perhaps the poet lohn Dunne expressed this relationship most eloquently in these words. No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main lam involved in Mankind To achieve successful lives as individuals and members of many communities throughout life it is important to remind ourselves constantly that we need to discover our vital connectedness to each and every other person with whom we come into contact. Our practice of the best human qualities, friendliness, consideration, honesty and willingness to become involved in other's lives, enables us to enjoy the benefits of membership in groups and to negotiate the stresses of leaving them when it is time to go I urge you to recollect and examine the best experiences you had in school; discover how they happened; how you contributed to their achievement, and with whom you enjoyed them. You may discover your personal formula for successful participation in the groups in which circumstances will place you and subsequently remove you when it is necessary to graduate from them into new life situations. As you begin to look back in reminiscence and forward in anticipation of the next steps in your journey, so do I also prepare myself to remember the many wonderful and exciting events of these past years in Levittown, even as I consider how to continue the friendships gained here into my future. In this way you and I may graduate to the next phases of our lives confident that we will survive our loss of place by preserving the best aspect of living, our time together with one another. Dr. Robert Neidich Robert Neidich Superintendent of Schools 20 Sandra Myles President Nelson Goldberg Vice-President Murray Hoffman Secretary Martin Adams Thomas Kuhn Harvey S. Sands Board of Education 21 lames Ward It is truly significant that the class of '78 was destined to be the graduating class as Memorial celebrated its twenty-fifth anni- versary. You were successful in keeping alive the vitality and excitement that was launched by the first graduates at Me- morial. It was easy to recognize a rekindl- ing of the original spirit that was so sym- bolic of our school's early years. The students who enthusiastically sup- ported the revival of the fifties brought a great deal of happiness and nostalgia to all of us who have fond memories of that time which seems too recently to have passed. The spontaneous applause, the smiles and twinkles were evidence of the appreciation for us all to who you gave an opportunity to somewhat relive an exciting part of our past. Your theme was Individuality. Indeed each of you added a personal touch to this school year. Each individual achieve- ment in plays, concerts, sports, and every- day activities added to the totality we proudly call Memorial. We all derived considerable personal satisfaction and well being as we lindyed through 1977- 78. We wish you every success in all your future endeavors. Patrick Walsh Principal 22 A vital aspect of a high school educa- tion is to continue developing the in- dividuality of each student. Specific courses, programs and events are primarily established to heterogenize the student population. This character- istic, of developing individuality, does not end with a high school diploma but continues throughout our entire lives. It should grow, change and also be made applicable, as we move through education, to our vocational careers and retirement years. What are we without our distinct individualities? Robert Edward Noble Vice-Principal Jr. High Administration I extend to each of you my compliments upon having achieved a milestone that has come about after twelve years of hard work. Your achievement is heightened by the fact that your and your classmates will be remem- bered as the graduating class that took part in the cele- bration of Memorial's 25th Anniversary. Be proud of the fact that each of you played an integral role in your school’s history. Your graduation from Levittown Memorial High School signifies your readiness to step out into the world and assume your position in life. As you strive to maintain the individuality you have nurtured during your school years, you may find that you are judged by group goals and standards developed by others. How you will learn to cope will influence your future happiness. I join with your classmates and teachers who have monitored your progress from grade 7 to the present in wishing you future success. Remember that old adage success is doing all you can and then some; it is often the then some that spells the difference between success and failure and as your future becomes your present, remember back with fondness the good times and bad, the good friends and others, and everything that collec- tively went into the last seven years of your life as a student at Memorial. Good luck, always!!! lames V. Garvey Principal Congratulations to the Class of 1978 on the publication of the Silver Anniversary edition of ECHOES! I hope that through the years ahead it will bring back to memory the echoes of many happy voices and the happy days of youth. Your choice of Individuality” as a theme for your year- book is most approriate. It underscores the fact that every human being is unique in a number of ways and, by his very individuality, contributes something to life and liv- ing. Best wishes for a bright future! loseph E. McDonald Assistant Principal 24 Thank-you and Good-bye Being a principal is a full-time job. You must deal with students, teachers, and parents; disciplining, ad- vising, and counseling. Aside from this, you have still found the time to give us something, a sense of pride for our school and for ourselves. This will remain with us for the rest of our lives. In the two years you have been here, we've found you to be involved with students and faculty as people. You weren't just a figurehead in your office. We've seen you at all extra-curricular activities, from football games to concerts. We thank you for your support. In this, your last year at Levittown Memorial, we would like to express our appreciation and we wish you much happiness in the years to come. The position of assistant principal must be filled by someone who always puts the benefit of the student first, and who is constantly aware of the goings-on in the school. For years, you have done the job with understanding and a concern for each and every stu- dent. You’ve played an important part in every good thing this school has done, and we hope that the programs you've started will continue. You may not be here in body, but your enthusiastic spirit will be a part of this school for many years to come! Thanks, good-bye, and good luck, Mr. Noble! |ohn Carney Alan Fleischman Florence Alperl Many times a teacher's job goes beyond 2:25, and their time is not just dedicated to marking tests. Most of our teachers are willing to stay after school to help the student, even if it is just to talk. They know how much it can help if he knows that someone understands and cares. This carries into the classroom, also. This is the last year here at l.M.H.S. for several members of our faculty. We want to thank them for giving of themselves and for caring about their students. We wish them the best of luck in the future. 25 26 Ben Angel Guidance Richard Azzarelli Industrial Arts Bruce Baldwin Science Donna Barrell Arthur Beccaris Homemaking Teachers' Aide Nicholas Balitsos Phyliss Bartolotta Sr. High Phys. A button sale, candy cane sale, and Almost Anything Goes have already been held to raise money. With all the students pitching in and working hard, the Prom is sure to be a success. We hope that the future of everyone in the Class of 78 is full of happiness and success. The Class of 78 wishes to thank Mr. Robert Masone and Mr. Eugene Feder for all their help and guidance. The laughter and the tears The shadows of misty yesteryears The good times and the bad, you've seen And all the others in between Remember? Do you remember? The times of your life. Reach out for the joy and sorrow Put them away in your mind For memories are time that you borrow To spend when you get to tomorrow Here comes the setting sun The seasons are passing one by one So gather moments while you may Collect the dreams you dream today Remember? Will you remember? The times of your life. 49 w i '': Laurie Alaia William Alefelc) Carol Anderson Lisa Aresca Yesterday 50 Marie Berlingeri Bruce Paul Bisulca Beverly Blumkin loanne Bracco Dan Broggi 52 Donald Brower loanne Burns Thomas Cannon Robert Cafferty Brian Caruso Tory Chisholm Patricia Ciaccio Margo Cecora Phil Ciaravino William Claiborne Will you smile lames Castillo Pete Clasper Gail Cohen Torie Conklin Paul Cocheo Ken Cohen and tell the world about me? 55 Michael Crescenzo Julie Curcio Kenneth Daly Robert Curran Mark Czachor Diane Davey Can there be no doubt Curtis Davis Susan Decker Gary Davis , Daryl DeAngelo Noeline Dennis leanne Diaz Kevin DeMoore Susan Diehl about me? 57 F )erry Dolan Donna Ann Draycotl Chris Esposito ISL? loan Dodenhoff Michael DiPaula Richard Dombek I was Erin Donohue Christian Gabriel Lida Garcia John Flynn Nick Gagliano As I gaze upon Sharon Gallagher Lisa Gagnon Matthew Frey 60 a sea of smiling faces Shaun P. Tony Cagliano - President The Junior Class is a class that works hard to achieve their goals. Last year, under the leadership of Miss Jean Brashears, they sponsored The Battle of the Bands and a very successful Sophomore Variety Show. This year brought some changes. Miss Donna Ditchik and Mr. Bruce Baldwin are now the advisors. With their help and encouragement, this year's maga- zine drive was the most successful ever. Because of all the energy and hard work the students have put in, the Class of 79 will be the first class to hold its Junior Prom outside of school. The Class of 79 wishes the Senior Class the best of luck in the future. 104 |oe Samluk, Bill Hill, Dennis Lesser, Ken Madill Scott Burtt, Tony Cerasi, Eddie Thompson, Theresa Taylor, Gretchen Schmidt Kris Drebotick, Rich Claiborne, Mike Joe Prudente, Debbie Shea, Paul Hammer, Cecile Chenevey, Theresa Lynch, Tessa Garde 106 Rick Dillmann, Nick Broccoli, Lori Cecora, Dorothy Barton, Cindy Singer Fazio, Rich Aconal, |ay Caldwell, Jean Murphy Thomas Carr, Ricky McPartlin, Thomas Freytag, Mary Ann Smith, Nancy Ledesky, Linda Draycott Mike Hoffa, Brian Barrett, Ron Desimone, Shirley Buccarella, Chris Schill, Aleta Rizzo 107 Ron Gravely, Don Fabrikant, Colleen Noonan Tom Rosenberger, Rich King, Chris McGlinchey, Tim Waterbury, Laura Aybar, Cyn Snyder Bob Schrieb, Rich Untener, Bob Flannagan, Tom Asture, Karen O'Brien, Mary Pat Tuttle, Steve Federico |ohn Grasso, Dave Decker, Kenny Bernard, Mike Toto Mark lovino, Robert Vermilyea, Nancy Tsang, Pam Logan, Maureen (ones, Tracy Greaves 108 Mary Hatred, Todd Donahue, Renee Chopay, Bob Bruns, Julie Berger 109 Mary Gehlich, Tom Penny, Helen Vasilakos, Maureen Byrne, Cathy Samluc, Frank Russo Liliana Braun, Bob Caputo, George Mosher, Joan Christ, Bill Mignoli, Kathy Anderson Tom Knowles, Marie Lotilo, John Stemm, Jimmy McGrail James Trissler, John Livoti, Jeff Diamond, Pam Jeffries, Rich Grubiak, James Reudder Mike Sanzana, Linda Smith, Bob Valentine, Tedd Bial 110 Rose Ann Vermilyea, Rob Johnston, Karen Lewis, Sally Jones, Tony Gagliano, Cathy Shine Kathy McPartlin, Stephanie Winters, David Tonn, Janice Stuven, Bob Bolen Eileen Maguire, Kelly Wilbert, Donna Scotto, Tom Rinck, Mary Ann Cassidy, Steve Venezia, Vicky D'Andrea 111 Jerry O'Leary, Richie Henn, Kathy Dellinger, Kevin Roach, Jim Lyons Peggy Slater, Dale Roesch, Mike Spainer, Maureen Olive, Bob Wirtz |ohn Mateer, Mary Huggard, Liz McNamara, Jerry Goldberg, Colette O'Brien Ken Reid, George O'Malley, Danny Stripp, Pat Lima, Laury Gates Bob Temme, Steve Fredricks, Tony Rimoli, Chris Patrone, Susan Larrick, Steve Patterson 112 Richie Goodwin, Pete Seigleman, jerry Brick, Kevin Brown, Mary Gabriel, Diane Frey, Hillary Strizver Ken Klein, Tony Gagliano, Alan Wolff John Napolitano, Darren Lane, Sean Smith, Michele Rorech, Bob Smith, Bill Van Loo 113 Tony Moran, Cathy Beccaris, Desi Norris, Richard Sellas, Chris Allibone, |oy Schulatta, Stephanie Lewis Jackie Spitz, Charley Mahoney, Mike Jacoby, Sue Eden, Frank Paccione, Maureen Homkow Joe Lang, Janet McDowall, Jim Covais, Sonja Kramer, Gene Welischar, Pam Santerre 114 Mike Vecchione, Delores Mitchell, Keith Anderson, Robin Garcia, Peter Sierre, Mariann M Andrews, James Svanderlik Ann Sill, Bill Mader, Gary Foster, Kelly Radigan, Rich Magadan Steve Walk, Mike Romano, Dennis Briggs, Joe Ferro, Al Boyle 115 Bridget Clifford, Kurt Schwetje, Peggy Perfetti, Bob Hatred, Cheryl Nimal, Sal Commisso Beth Huberman, Jim Matarlo, Tom Miklitsch, |ane Mays, Vinny Woessner, Tom Rooney Charlie Menke, Dave Vail, Glenn Gagnon, Rich Rinck, Bob Lott Mary Anne Healy, Tom Harjus, Chris Jonza, Debbie Williams, Tim Kelly, Nancy Antonette Kathy Mannella, Mark Gaeta, Carlos Gonzalez, Chris McKinney, Frank DiTieri, Bob Steiger Ken Keifer, Richie Dolan, Richie Buccarella, Diane Romano, Nick Capria 116 Linda O'Hare, Don Kiefer, Diane Eschmann, Charley Rauch, Linda Reed Janet Smith, Bonnie Wittekind, Greg Lacker, Margaret Tumbarello, Steven Gagliano, Margaret Barrett Carol Willis, Karen Heaphy, Margaret Nussey, Ken Austin, Donna Crisped Mary McGoldrick, Debbie Klein, Bill Shannon 117 118 119 120 Class of '80 Standing - Ron Paone; Tom Zappalla; Pete Walsh — Sitting — lulie Shannon; Amy Erb; Mary Carucci; Kim Smith Barbara Schrivrer The Class of '80 is con- centrating on pulling the Soph- omore Class together. The officers are plan- ning many fund raising events to raise money for the best Junior Prom ever! 122 123 125 This page sponsored by Fabrics and Things ACTIVITIES Fifties Day This year on December 20, the S.O. sponsored a “Fifties Day in commemoration of our twenty-fifth anniversary. Students and faculty dressed fifties style” and a dance was held that evening where Travesty and Wiley and the Whipoorwills performed. Santa Claus was also present at the dance. A prize was awarded to the class that had the most students dressed up during the day and another to the class with the highest attendance at the dance. Everyone involved had a good time, and it was a successful activity. 128 Almost Anything Goes On a Friday night in Novem- ber, the Senior Class sponsored Levittown Memorial's version of Almost Anything Goes. Teachers and students com- peted in a number of contests to see which was the superior team. The winning team was made up of Sue Decker, Anne Gilmartin, Mr. Knoblock and Mr. Beccaris. The evening proved to be a fun one for participants and spectators alike. Back to School Night On October 27, L.M.H.S. broke tradition with an innovative Back-to-School night in which students demonstrated course content to their parents through various media. Parents were invited to, among other things: Bicentennial Squares — a historical take off on Hol- lywood Squares; a typical chorus rehearsal; a sneak pre- view of student Health pro- jects; and the Chemistry Lab, where hydrogen was produced from copper sulfate and sulfur- ic acid. The evening was topped off with a Twenty-fifth Anniversary cake. All those in- volved found it a most enlight- ening experience. 130 Pep Rally This year our school spirit was demon- strated at two pep rallies. One for com- bined fall sports and the other for our football team on the eve of the Division — Memorial game. To the tune of the not yet written Panther fight song. Panther fans cheered our team on. The pep rally proved to be a focal point for our school spirit. 131 Mid-Winter Concert This year's mid-winter concert was a great success. The instrumental and vocal groups were scheduled to perform on lanuary 18th. Unfortunately, due to the weather, the choral groups postponed their performance to 3 weeks later. De- spite the separate concerts, all groups performed extremely well. 132 133 Good Times Well Remember. The Good Ship Lollipop performed by a guy in drag? The Beatles — right here in L.M.H.S.? These were just two of the hilarious acts in the variety show, Good Times We'll Remember. This show became so popu- lar that it was brought back for a repeat performance on February 3. 134 In February of this year the Guid- ance Department held an Electives Fair. The purpose of the fair was to give students an opportunity to learn about the electives offered in our school. The Fair was highly successful. Many students signed-up for elective courses for next year. 136 Electives Fair Junior Prom — Class of '78 Smile provided the music. lunior Prom Queen and Court: leanne Diaz, Erin Donohue (Queen), Diane lones, Maureen Daly. Advisor Robert Masone with Mrs. Advisor Eugene Feder with Mrs. Masone Feder The Class of 78's junior Prom, held on April 30, 1977, proved to be quite a memorable event. A flood enroute to the photographer made for alot of pictures of wet gowns and shoes. The decorations made the cafeteria barely recog- nizable. Everyone who attended found themselves having a thoroughly enjoyable time. The Class of '78 will have their Senior Prom at Leonards in Great Neck on May 25, 1978. For a change, the Class of '79 will hold their Junior Prom outside of the school at Masonic Temple in Hicksville on May 6, 1978. 137 This page sponsored by Foresto Rentals 140 141 Echoes '78 As the final deadline date approaches, our special 25th anni- versary issue of Echoes 78 is almost complete. Working on the yearbook has been a great experience for all of us, and we look back on these months with happy memories. We worked long and hard and overcame many obstacles such as snowstorms, icestorms, unexpected school closings and those days when everything seemed to go wrong. The finished product is a yearbook that we are proud to say is ours. There are many people I would like to thank, loan Murphy, Activities Editor, made sure every club was properly represented in the yearbook. Layout Editors, Barbara Barton, Lorrie Bellisio, and Margit Warren worked harder than anyone, spending countless hours measuring picas and cropping pictures. Sharon Gallagher and Kathy Gorman, Literary Editors, were responsible for most of the write-ups. Rick Cooley, Photography Editor, was assisted by Tom Tonn, Bob Ryan, Sharon Hartenstein and |ohn Mateer. Kathy Armstrong and Sharon Hartenstein were the Sports Editors. The financial details of the yearbook were handled by Linda Sand- kuhl, Denise Michel and Erin Donohue. An extra thanks goes to those on the staff who did not hold editorial positions. Anne- Marie Nuzzi supplied all the artwork. Kathy Ray, Margie Tumba- rello, Patty Barrett, Ellen Wall and leanne McGuire all worked hard, helping anywhere and everywhere they could. Finally, the entire staff thanks |udy Gilbert for her help, the Business Department for the use of their typewriters, and espe- cially Mr. Zacker for his untiring efforts on our behalf. Photography Editor Kathy Ray, Ellen Wall 143 Student Organization Roseanne Hoare - secretary, ludy Griffiths - president This year the S.O. in an effort to form a greater communication between the adminis- tration and students, created a Student Council with delegates from the tenth and eleventh grade Social Studies classes, and the twelfth grade English classes. We started the year by hosting the Sr. High Football Dinner Dance. Afterwards, the stu- dents congregated at the end of the football field to see the bonfire” and cheer for our football team in the Division vs. Memorial game. With the help of the students and teachers working together, Open School Night proved to be a great success. We hope that the idea of involving students in Open School Night will continue to make what was once thought to be a long and drawn out event, more exciting for students, parents, and teach- ers alike. In keeping with the celebration of the schools 25th anniversary, we planned a 50's Day, and Christmas Sock Hop. The Sophmore Class won $50 during the day for having the most students in bobby socks, and saddle shoes, and the Junior class won $50 for having the greatest number of students attend- ing the Sock Hop. Everyone enjoyed listening and dancing to the music of Travesty and our special guest, Wiley and the Whippoorw- ills. Advisor - Henry DiSciulto Last year the S.O. started sponsoring an an- nual Student Exchange Program. This year, we are planning an exchange with Quebec, Can- ada. We hope that this will be a success, and a great experience for all the students involved. We feel that the S.O. this year has accom- plished more than in past years, and we know, with the help of the underclassmen, we can do even more next year. 144 145 Spotlight SPOTLIGHT staff Patty Barrett lulie Berger Jerry Dolan Hugh Fradkin Mike Hoffer Lisa Liss Katie Murray Maureen Murray Anne-Marie Nuzzi Linda Reed Lori Smith Margaret Tumbarello Advisor: Robert Masone Left to Right Margaret Tumbarello. However, with help from our friends and supporters and a determined, hard working group of students, several issues were published throughout the year. We hope the community will realize what an important ex- perience and resource publications are and support them as in the past. Robert Masone - Advisor Theatre Workshop The Theatre Workshop is a group of students who meet to improve their acting skills. They have put on a variety show, Good Times We'll Remember, which was brought back by popular demand for a repeat performance. As we go to press, they are working on an L.M.H.S. version of Saturday Night Live which we are sure will be a success. 147 National Honor Society Rich Dillman Gary Distilli Francis Draghi Amy Erb Karen Eschmann Lisa Fechtig Gary Foster Sharon Gallagher Barbara Gehlich Marie-Elena Gerardi Mary Gehlich Carlos Gonzalez Tom Gorecki Kathy Gorman Paula Gorman Paul Hammar Sharon Hartenstein Karen Heaphy Roseanne Hoare Michael Hoffer Mary Ellen Huggard David Hunt Kathy Hunt Debbie lacoby Kenneth Jensen Mark Johnston Craig Jones Doris Kamps Susan Kane Debra Klein Karen Klein Mark Krummenacker Deborah Lesser Ken Lyle Theresa Lynch Renee Mandracchia Anthony Marotta Hilda Marquez Kathy Martin John Mateer Robert Matulis Marian McAndrew Margaret McFadden Chris McGlinchey leanne McGuire Alex Melnick Denise Michel Dolores Mitchell Edmund Moran Tom Mugno lames Murphy Joan Murphy Katie Murray Maureen Murray Anita Nardo Angela Navarino Karen Noonan Margaret Nussey Anne-Marie Nuzzi Tim O'Gallagher Dawn Picone Carmen Pineiro Linda Quinn Kathy Ray Aleta Rizzo Sharon Roberts Dianne Rosenkranz Robert E. Robert Steiger, Eric Vermilye, Chris Allibone and leanne Diaz along with Mr. Hondo Rei have become involved with this year's theatrical productions. The group has a two-fold purpose. First and foremost, the group will help L.M.H.S. put on various theatrical productions throughout the school year. And second, Mr. Rei will work with the crew and give each individual an opportunity to further define their talents. Students learn what goes on behind the scenes, for example; lighting, scenery, direction, etc. All will have the chance to use various tools while working on the scenery flats and props. The group will try to satisfy their creative abilities by practical application of origi- nal ideas. Mr. Rei's specific aims for the group are: 1. To teach art principles as they relate to 2 and 3 dimensional design and to develop technical knowledge through theory and practice. 2. To instill the proper methods of working and the correct use of tools and materials. The crew will also learn the basic nomenclature used in interior and stage design. The Lighting Crew prepares the lighting ef- fects for our musical and dramatic shows. They are responsible for all of the equip- ment and keep it in good working order. Many times they stay after school for long rehearsals and late at night for perform- ances. Their service to the school is greatly appreciated. Mr. Berk - Advisor. Richard Buccarella. Kenny Klein. The 1977-78 Memorial High School athletic season will be long remembered This was the second year of the austerity budget causing cancelations of some sports and reduction of services such as buses, custodial clean up and uniform and equipment repair In addition, the heaviest snow storms in thirty years caused further disruptions of the winter season with cancelations of practices and games. Wearing old. outmoded or borrowed uniforms and using equipment that had seen better days was common for most of the athletes Fund drives, door to door canvassing for donations, raffles, cake and candy sales, and going to games in cars instead of buses were the rule instead of the exception. Austerity also forced the cancelation of the Badminton, Swimming, Winter and Spring Track and Field teams. In spite of this there were some notable individual and team achievements Loretta Korowitz won the Nassau County Diving championships and placed second in the New York State High School Diving Championship tournament for the third year in a row. This was accomplished even though there was no swimming team. Donna Draycolt won the South Shore and Nassau County Cross Country championships. Susan Kane was named to the Nassau County League IV All Star Field Hockey team Greg Rorech made the All County Football team and Keith Donnelly was named to the Conference V All Conference team The Girls Field Hockey and Volleyball teams had successful seasons with the Volley Ball Pantherettes being recognized as one of the better teams in Nassau County. The Wrestling team won the Fifth Annual Holiday tournament held at MacArthur High School. Individual championships were won by Bruce Malings, Mark Czachor and |oe Slovak. The Memorial Bowling team was named the twelfth best team in Nassau County. While most of the sports suffered in performance this past year there were still many fine and positive experiences for the players to make this a memorable year for the seniors of 1978. - Nicholas Balitsos Athletic Director 164 165 Varsity Football Standing: Sean Smith; Ed Thompson; Tom Simendinger; Mark Matthews; John Lombardi; Tom Tonn; Tom Cannon; Alec Melnick; Keith Donnelly; Don Herold; Ken Daly; Greg Rorech; Mike Shine; Rich Goodwin; Phil Ciaravino; Kurt Hellmers. A good note for the future is that the Panthers will have eight returning lettermen, many of whom were key players this year. The outlook for 79 is promising for Varsity and J.V. teams. Love the Efficient 4576 Staff To Margit, Ellen, and Anne ZOOOOM’ 222 ECHOES 223 When you are old and grey and full of sleep — And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look. Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace. And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you; And loved the sorrows of your changing face. And bending down beside the glowing bars. Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled — And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. — Author unknown Submitted by Marie-Elena Cerardi 224 I'm calling you, but you can't hear me. You can hear no one through your walls. Open your door and let me in. I know you, I can help. I was lonely once, and bitter, But I unlocked my door And knocked down my walls. Now I want to help you to freedom. I know you, I can help. Everything is easier when you have a friend. — Margit Warren 225 Cherish yesterday ... live today ... dream tomorrow. — Author Unknown Submitted by Kathy Ray Spring There's something about spring That can wake people up After being dormant all winter. Buds seem to suggest New life-starting again. Each year. Blooming so pretty are the flowers. If you can't wake up during spring. You'll never wake up at all. — Margaret Tumbarello 226 As the leaves turn I must too As they fall to the ground I lose my old ways seeking the new ... but soon a new time will come called spring and I too will turn to a new day. — Anonymous Look to the future for an unreachable dream Look to the past for a tangible memory Tomorrow is difficult to grasp Yesterday is easy to touch. — Lorrie Bellisio 227 Wilted Verses Taking my pen in hand, I tear being cut down by my own words. So often I have sown And harvested a premature crop. I'm yielding unripened fruit So often the verses wilted, still green When I had thought them red and ready Time passes quickly through my head And I have not timeless answers. That is why I come to you You may teach me for a time. And then may my thoughts flow as ink and as woven as my hand writing May I not be harvested Till I fall from the tree on my own. — Rich Kleppan 228 What is a friend? Can one be found in a soothing voice, a caring Hello! or a sharing smile which says Yes, I know. I've been there too. Can we trust, can we share, can we give? Yet how hurt one can be by a thoughtless stare, a cold hurting voice, and a knowing frown which says You're crazy!! And meaning it too. But who can we trust or love? With whom can we share and care? Free to be ourselves yet open to others is the answer, and the lock is in ourselves. We are the keys. — Margaret Tumbarello The future is a tunnel. Sometimes looking ahead — It's hard to see the light at the end I'm almost afraid to start on my journey. But with the warmth of your friendship In my heart And your encouraging words echoing through my head. I take the first step. I start out slowly and carefully But now I am confident — The light is there. — Jeanne McGuire 229 My friend I hate to do it But our friendship just can't last The times we shared together Have faded to the past I told you it would happen Our friendship was bound to end Although I know you care I don't consider you a friend Please don't try to argue But try to understand That time can change two people As the tide changes the sand Our friendship has been lovely But you see it has to end I look at you in a different way Someone has fallen in love with you. My friend. — Christine Schill The road is leading me where, I don't know Twisting, turning sometimes making sharp turns It's a one way trip No turning back, sometimes so dark I can't see two feet in front of me. Don't know where I'll be tomorrow. But I'm going head on into it And soon I'll see the sun — Anonymous 230 Sometimes I feel trapped — I'm a prisoner within myself. I build walls around me I don't let anyone come inside. I feel like a seed trying to burst out of its shell but I'm afraid to break loose And open up my heart to you. If only you would give me a chance to be myself — to bloom into the beautiful flower I could be. There are so many things I want you to see. So many things I want to share with you Let me touch you, Let me love you ... Let me be your friend. - Ellen Wall In Memoriam Mary Curry 232 Football games ... Homecoming . .. victory parties ...
