Vice President PTA 39 Alan Zacker English Yearbook 41 class of 74 We've come a long way and we’ve got a still longer way to go. We have many memories to reflect on. As a sophomore fund-raising project, we bought 400 mugs out of which 200 were stolen and 200 were destroyed. Most of our jun- ior year was spent watch- ing Mr. Ehlen growing and then shaving off his motis- tache, trying to decide which way he looked older. And as seniors, the most successful shaft of all was with the showing of The Star Spangled Girl. We printed up 3,800 tickets and 2,000 programs only to have 7 people attend the performance. The failures, the flops, the fun. We will always remember how much we experienced and how much we grew. All hope was lost a long time ago but something had not per- mitted us to leave. We didn’t expect any more action, even from Mepham, in only four minutes remaining. The Panthers didn't lose hope though. In the next four minutes the crowd was on their feet screaming and cheering. Three touchdowns plus the extra points put Memorial ahead 22 to 20. Hundreds of eyes gleamed, hundreds of cold- stricken noses and cheeks reddened, hundreds of mittened hands clapped ecstatically. The feel- ing of jubilance quickly crept onto the once dis- traught faces. The Panthers came through again. The show of negativism was not unduly deserved, L Long Beach 70-61 because for the last few years, the basketball team's W N. Hyde Park 76-60 record hadn't exactly been up to par. Motivated largely by John Denver's “Rocky Mountain High, Snow Peak cola, WBAB-FM, roast beef on a roll with ketchup, and the desire to build a really neat yearbook, the Echoes people decided to get together. They traveled great distances, suffered many hardships, and came out of the wood work in order to fulfill this desire. The upper yearbook office better known as the home of the Social Studies Department was a good place to chew the fat. Folks like Tom Yates, Ed Reagan, Joyce Rubin, and Janet Eaton gathered there frequently on their way to and from yearbook assignments. Randy Kohen became a permanent resident (It is said that he kept a pillow and a bright red quilt there). The lush lower offices, located in the Student Lounge, were secluded, cozy, and kind of unruly but they all felt good knowing they had a place to hang their hats. The yearbook underwent creation solely because of the acquisition of 118 No. 2 pencils from the bowling alley. Robert Guinan, staff thief and activities editor, kept the supply shelves well-stocked. Each staff mem- ber was not only required by law to donate a poster to the office but sometimes they even went out of their way, resorting to dishonest means to get them. Sandi Schiffman liked page 99 so much that she did it twice. Some folks needed the extra push to get the job done: “When Levy doesn't do it, I'm going to kill him! was a familiar cry. The cussin’ and fuming was colorful, too. It was not an uncommon sight to catch the Echoes children burning the midnight oil, but there was always the orange juice in the file cabinets for that extra pick-me-up, many birthday parties, and lots of impromptu Wild Times. It was difficult for others to understand the vicious threats by yearbook personnel when asked to get out of the Echoes' Chambers. Maybe now they can see the talent, the time, the pride, and yeah, the love that went into it. Maybe. Thank you to Laura O’Shea for working day in and day out on the index.
