w—m I 2 INTRODUCTION . . ADMINISTRATION . FACULTY . . . SENIORS . . . UNDERCLASSMEN . ACTIVITIES . . . SPORTS . . . ADS... Because you've helped us just by being truly interested in what we do, Because your efforts on the Spotlight and in the Surf Club have opened up new fields of interest for so many of us, And because you are, in every sense of the word, a teacher. We, the Class of 1969, proudly dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Thaddeus F. Gibney. X f 1 8 Headache—shoulder muscles cramp painfully—short temper—an exam tomorrow and I haven't studied yet. Torn fingernails—throat raw with shouts—a minute to go and the score is tied. Moments like these—an agony while living them, somehow satisfying to look back on. 9 10 It was a feeling that came over me when there was a project to be done and there were two of us to share its burdens and rewards. I felt it again when someone I knew just casually said Hi! to me in the halls. Again if a teacher singled me out for special praise. And again when a school dance or game had been extra special. Times like these will come again, but none will be so gratifying to me. Midterms, homework, termpapers—is it all fair? Nothing to look forward to,- jammed lockers, crowded halls, luke- warm lunch—why bother to make any effort at all? But when I think of my good friends, mixed with a teacher's hard work and the satisfaction of a lesson learned, I know why I do bother. 13 15 • - We of the ECHOES '69 staff take great pride in presenting this yearbook to you. It represents eight months of arduous work and many hours of frustrations and anxiety. Your reception of this book will make all our efforts worthwhile or a disappointing failure. It is our hope that when you read this book in the years to come, it will bring back the most favorable memories of your years at Levittown Memorial. Thank you, and good luck in all your future endeavors. Sincerely, Your Editors, •7-5 Qx.vcka. r LOUIS BLUMBERG Superintendent of Schools The future augers much excitement and opportunities for explora- tion, discovery and personal and social fulfillment for the young people of today. Our world is a cosmos in shrinkage. Our neighbors in Europe and Asia are within hours travel and within close proximity of expressed hopes and aspirations. Mankind seems to be awakening to each other's feelings, desires and philosophies. No longer do we live in the isolation of locale, but rather in the community of men of all races, colors, creeds and cultures. Into this world you enter-ready to contribute something. Whatever your contribution, render it with dignity, honesty and service to your fellow man. Your future is bright; your lives are ahead of you. I hope you will tread the path of satisfaction, fulfillment and reward. 18 The Board of Education of District No. 5 has begun to recognize the capabilities of the student body as a whole and the student as an indi- vidual. A new program instituted in October 1968 has proved to the students that the Board of Education is truly interested in giving us a chance of expressing our feelings and complaints about school activities. More than this, it gives each of us an opportunity to be heard, with the promise of thoughtful reception of these words. It is the hope of each board member, as well as all students, that this program will lead to more effective communication between the components of the school system and more active involvement and participation by the students. BOARD OF EDUCATION 19 For altogether too many years many of us have been waiting for a real spark of desire on the part of our students for greater and im- proved participation in all aspects of school life and program. Some twenty-five years ago an ef- fort was made to bring democracy into the classroom (meaning the school in general). This was labeled progressive education. This became pretty much a complete failure. Why? Efforts were made to implement this before faculty or students knew what it was all about. Anarchy instead of democracy developed. To plan the future we must care- fully study the past. We must build on what we have. Progress is made by evolution and not revolution. Our mistakes of the past set back the cause by twenty-five years. May we learn by this experience. The tre- mendous power and potential of our student thinking and action must not and can not be further neglected. The collective wisdom of our 1800 students will vastly improve our school community and its service to its members. Sincerely, Charles Jacobs Congratulations to the class of '69. You have taken the torch from the class of '68 and you have added much to its brightness. During these times of student un- rest, some of it quite violent, you have selected the path of reason to fulfill your goals of active participation in policy making. Much credit must be given to your lead- ership for this wise choice. Throughout the year, there has been evidence that this class has set many new achievement goals with their fine athletic team records, their increase in extracurricu- lar activities and most impor- tant of all the tremendous increase in the number of seniors to be found on the academic honor roll. Once again, congratulations. Sincerely, Robert Noble My very best wishes to the class of '69. Your class was quick to establish an identity in Memorial, assuring it of success as a leadership group. You have consistently displayed a desire for in- dividual responsibility and an eagerness for involve- ment. Your attitude towards participation has been posi- tive, never sacrificing self- respect or integrity. The vibrancy of Memorial '69 has had an impact upon us all. I look towards a brighter future for you, one in which you will play out your roles in developing courageous and creative leadership. Sincerely, Patrick B. Walsh 23 F. ALPERT Nurse K. '69 experienced a year of non-stop activity. First and foremost, it was inspired by the capable, driving and energetic lead- ership of Mike Matranga, Senior class president, and Mr. B. Baldwin, Advisor. To them, and to all the hard-working officers, the class of '69 owes a debt of thanks. With their aid, many projects were attempted and brought to a successful conclusion. The Brooklyn Bridge concert, held at the beginning of February, was a highly entertaining show which attracted students from other schools as well as from L.M.FI.S. The unusual Senior-sponsored Psychedelic dances, with their flashing lights, were also attended by many students. The Senior Class was a generous one. It lent money to the other school or- ganizations who needed assistance, and adopted a family at Christmas. It was purposeful, working hard by sponsoring a candy drive to raise money for the all-important Senior Prom, held on May 28 at the Fluntington Town Flouse. The Prom was a fitting climax to the year for a class that has contributed much to L.M.FI.S., receiving the appreciation and thanks of the entire student body in return. 36 CO REID AARON BARBARA ACHATZ 38 PAULA ARESCA NANCY ARNOLD 39 RONALD BEECHLER DANIEL BEHRENS 40 CAROLYN BINGHIERI GAIL BLODGETT JEAN BOBAL CATHERINE BOWERS KATHLEEN BOCKMAN RANDY BOROFF m DERYK BRATTON JOHN BRAWLEY 42 EDWARD BYRNES JOSEPH CARBONARO GEORGE CASSIDY VINCENT CARRASQUILLO PHYLLIS CASTROGIOVANNI PHILIP CASTELLO LINDA BUNN EDWARD BURGESS 43 CECILIA CAVANAGH EDWARD CHRIST CAROLE CONWAY ROBERT CORRIGAN BONNIE CROMWELL JAMES CREAMER DENNIS CUNY LINDA CULLIN SUSAN CONNERY WILLIAM CONOVER 45 47 PATRICIA DAWN SHELDON DAVIDSON ANNETTE DECICCO SHERYL DEACON RALPH DEGREGORIO JOAN DECYK CATHERINE CYPIN PETER D'ALBENZIO 48 ROBERT DELAURO JEAN DEMYER 49 KAREN DOHERTY LORI DONNENFELD VERONICA DOUGHERTY SUSAN DOW SUSAN DVORACK MARYALICE DOUR LINDA DOYLE 50 LYLA EDGAR ROBERT EDGAR 51 GARY FLAX VIRGINIA FISHBEIN SUSAN FUGIT SCOTT FOWLER ROBERT GABRIEL WILLIAM FUOTO ROBERT FISCHER GAIL FISHGOLD CLIFFORD GILES ROBERT GIAMMARINO PATRICIA GIORGI MARIANNE GADDONI CHRISTINE GELORMINO DIANNE GAFFNEY H I WILLIAM GELMAN JOHN GRACE ROGER GOLDMANN SHARON GOLD ELLEN GOLDSTEIN DAVID GRAY BABETTE GLENNON GERARD GREAVES LINDA GREY JANET GREEN MARIE HEALY CHRISTINE HALL KATHLYN GROSSO STEPHEN HASTINGS 56 57 LINDA HENDRICKSON ROBERT HENRY SUSAN HEYDT CHARLES HUNT EILEEN HIRT WENDY HELFAND RALPH HEMLEB 58 TED JACOBY ANGELA IANNELLA PAUL JAFFE DENNIS JAEGER MICHAEL JAROSCH DENISE JAHN KAREN HUTCHINSON KENNETH HUTCHINSON 59 TINA JONAS BARBARA JONES MARY PAT JONES NANETTE JOUVERE JOHN JUNGEN MICHAEL JUNGEN RENITA JAST CHARLES JOHN 60 ANNE KANAVEL STEPHEN KARGMAN 61 RICHARD KIPLING ROBERT KIRK ROBERT KNOWLES DONNE KOLBERG THOMAS KONETSKY FRED KRAMER WILLIAM KRAMER SUSAN KRAUS ROBERT LAMBERSON THOMAS KRAUS KATHLEEN KREMPF FREDERICK KUHN STEPHEN KUMMERNUSS BARBARA LACEY KEVIN LARRICK JAMES LAWLOR (A EMILY LICHTENSTEIN LORRAINE LEWAND RICHARD LIEBLING SUSAN LIEBOWITZ SUSAN LOFFMAN PAUL LIPOWSKI EILEEN LEVIN ARTHUR LEVY 65 DIANA MARASCO SUSAN MARBACK DONALD MAROLD PATRICIA MARTIN SHERIDAN MAY BONNIE MARONEY MICHAEL MATRANGA COLLEEN McADAM 69 EILEEN McCANN John McBride john McCarthy peter McCarthy DENNIS McCULLAGH JAMES McCORMICK ALLISON McADAMS donald McArthur 70 GERARD McGOUEY GARY McGRATH MICHAEL McGRATH EILEEN McPARTLAND KENNETH MEHM MARIE MEUNIER JOAN McNALLY EDWARD MEARS SPENCER MISNER EDWARD MILLER GAIL MORAN ANTHONY MORDENTE JOSEPH MORDENTE JAYME MORGAN JOHN MICENA PRESTON MIGHDOLL mmmm MICHAEL MURPHY KATHLEEN MURPHY RICHARD NASH PATRICIA MURPHY PATRICIA NICOLL DIANE NICOLA JACQUELINE MUNDY JULIE MUNSON 73 DONALD OETTINGER PATRICIA NICOSIA GARY ORNSTEIN SIGNE OLSON PATRICIA O'HALLORAN EDWARD OGDEN PAMELA PARKER ROBERT PARLATO 75 DONALD POLLARD PATTI PORTER PAUL PURCHLA PATRICIA RAIA RICHARD RAICA JOEL POST JOSEPH QUINN JAMES RANSLOW VIRGINIA RASMISON 79 CHARLES ROSS DAVID RUBIN 80 ELENA SALATTI DIANE SALKELD ANNE SAVAGE CHRISTINE SCALICI IRENE SCHARF ROBERT SCHOENDORF MARILYN SCHOENHAUS PEGGI SERGI 82 CHRISTINE SHELLEY RONALD SHANK CINDY SHERMAN WALTER SHEPSKI MICHELE SILVASIE VINCENT SIANO CHRISTINE SESSA ROBERT SHAND 83 JEFFREY SIMPSON JOSEF SKOCZYLAS LINDA SMEDIRA ROBERT SLATER BARBARA SMITH ROBERT SMITH 84 JANET SPANKO JOHN SPILLANE 85 86 87 WILLIAM STRUKEL WILLIAM TIERNEY LOLA STUFFLEBEAM PETER TAYLOR HELEN SUNDQUIST MARILYN TEKNUS RICHARD THOMAS ROSE TOPPER JUDITH WALLACE NANCY TRESHAM MARYLOU WARD ERLINE TOWNER CHRISTINE TROTTA LILIAM TURNES NICHOLAS VIDETTO VIRGINIA WEAVER ALICE WEINBERG DEBORAH WELSCH DEBORAH WEISS LAWRENCE WERGELES JANICE WERNICK SUSAN WARING CAROL WASZAK 90 ROBERT WILKINSON ROBERT WILLIAMS CHARLES WOLF SCOTT WIDRO RAYMOND WILLIAMS KURT WINKELMAN KEVIN WHITBY CHRYSLER PRESENTS “SAFETY' REID AARON—Varsity Soccer, Varsity Indoor Track, Spring Track, National Honor Society, J.V. He has plans to travel to Europe with his wife before making his permanent home in Florida. Mr. Jacobs, in his years as head of our school, has worked hard and long to make Levittown Memorial a better place in which we can develop and mature into responsible adults. His guidance and friendship to everyone concerned with the school will never be forgotten by any past, present or future graduates. The editors of Echoes '69, the class of '69, and the entire faculty and student body would like to thank Mr. Jacobs for his untiring assistance and leadership, and wish him the best of luck in all his fu- ture years. , li A TORS JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS The class of 1970 had a very exciting year. Through the endeavors of Mr. Robert Gatland and the Junior class officers, the Juniors were able to obtain lunch passes early this year, thus marking the first time Juniors were given such privileges. To raise money, they worked energetically by having a magazine drive in Nov- ember, a candy sale in February and many dances throughout the year. Their enthusiasm and spirit rose steadily as they prepared for the climax of the year—the Junior Prom. The theme for the Prom was Camelot and it marked a knight the Juniors will long remember. With such a fine year behind them, the class of '70 looks forward to an even greater senior year. 116 m 121 122 ‘°bb:'ns L«sfie Sla.er, I Deob(e Weiss | - Van jQav ifciU! if ±aJ. wi h ii 15- Abii G Uot.t ' .s. The theme this year was Cam- elot, and the L.M.H.S. gym was beauti- fully decorated for the occasion with castles from a bygone era of knights and tournaments. A ceiling hung with para- chute silk, a gate entranceway and mu- sic by the Almond Joys added clever and romantic touches to the atmosphere. The highlight of the evening came at 12:00 when the King and Queen, Den- nis Lehman and Michelle Feingold, were crowned by last year's monarchs, Don Beechler and Sharon Bernard. Their court was hard-working Juniors Kathy Trom- becky, Yolanda VanLoo, Debbie Seal, Kathy Beach, Ray Beattie, Steve Mosiello, Wayne Eaton, and Tom Jones. All in all it was a night the members of the class of '70 will remember for a long time. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Top Row: J. Cartwright, 1st V. Pres.; K. Garde, Pres.; F. Maniscalco, 2nd V. The Sophomore Class, under the guidance of Mr. David Hanna, proved to be a very enthusiastic group. One of their many achievements was the obtaining of lunch passes for all sophomores. Plans were made for a basketball game between the faculties of Levittown Memorial and Wisdom Lane. Other Fund raising activities were dances which were highlighted by sophomore bands. The class of '71 has impressed students and faculty alike and has made enthu- siasm and high spirits characteristics of their efforts. 134 : • Mm ?,!-()! SEiavan FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Standing: T. HIGH GENERAL ORGANIZATION Top Row: G. Carresquillo; C. McAlpine, President. Bottom Row: P. Springer; Mrs. C. Price, advisor; B. Degnan. The 7th and 8th grade G.O., under the expert supervision of Mrs. C. Price, has enjoyed the most successful year in the school's history this term. Guided by its President, Cameron McAlpine, the Junior High G.O. has spon- - sored many fund-raising activities, including a Junior High Dance and a very successful bottle drive. The G.O. has also been responsible for many activities planned especially for Junior High School students. Two of the most notable of these have been Teacher for a Day, and the International Buffet, in which students were asked to prepare food from foreign nations to be sampled by the rest of the Junior High students. The G.O. ended its year in an all-day picnic at Belmont Lake Park. Everyone had a wonderful time and the 7th and 8th grade students remained quite en- thusiastic about the idea of having a G.O. all their own. 144 r“ ,UJ S UHm WOT ushtuu buw BASKETBALL HOLIDAY TOURNAHENT CHAMPS 1965__________ 148 Contributors M. Beckman Joel Post Editor-in-Chief Arlene Zimney Co-Literary Editor Sheridan May Co-Literary Editor Steve Kummernuss Staff Photographer It all started last May when seven Juniors were put together to form the Echoes staff of '69. We were excited at the prospect cf our new positions, but a little afraid that we couldn't fulfill our obligations. After all, what did any of us know about putting a yearbook together, or for that matter forming ourselves into a working team? Fortunately we had no time to worry about it, because our learning pro- cess was to be a brief and exact one, with no room for mistakes. It began at the annual Yearbook Convention at Huntington Town House, where the basic rules of yearbook technique were learned. The coming of October meant the first 16 pages had to be planned, pic- tures taken and write-ups finished. Once that was completed, we also had to face December, February and March deadlines. As these drew near our pace quickened, and there never seemed to be enough time to get every- thing done. Orders were given (some were carried out), voices were raised, tempers rose and papers flew, but surprisingly we began to function as a team and not as individuals. For us, this year has meant the task of compiling a yearbook and the responsibility of making sure it is the best we can offer you. It means a pride in ourselves for a job well done. But far more important than these are the things we have learned this year. We became a staff, a working unit, not a he or I , but a we. Lasting friendships were created, and there were times together we will never forget. And maybe most important of all is that, through working together, each of us has learned a little more about himself. Mr. J. Dragonetti Business Advisor Mr. A. The staff, under the imaginative direction of Editor-in-Chief Preston Mighdoll and advisor Mr. T. Gibney and Miss E. Hrach, introduced many innovations to the paper's format and appearance, making the Spotlight more entertain- ing. The Senior Profile, film reviews, more feature articles and a new nameplate were among the additions. The thought- provoking editorials written this year especially reflected the prevailing liberal attitudes and ideas of the administration and student body. The staff members worked continually to gather news, fea- tures and sports articles before their deadline dates. They could be seen busily typing, writing and editing practically any day after school. Eight issues, in addition to the annual Senior Supplement at the end of June, were published. In March, the editors attended a convention in New York City to receive a board of judges' opinion on the standard of the Spotlight, and to learn new journalistic techniques. These new methods will be put to use by next year's editors to make the Spotlight as successful as it was this year. 150 Mr. T. Gibney Business Advisor Lori Donnenfeld Features Editor Miss E. Although stu- dents were permitted to vote a split ticket, the entire G.O. Gen- eration Party was elected. The most obvious changes in the G.O. were its new advisor, Mr. J. Dragonetti, and the initiation of the Student Council to replace the G.O. representative system. The council divided into committees, each holding a weekly meeting and its officers reporting to Pres- ident Bob Standfast. G.O. cards were also given special privileges. G.O. card holders were admitted to home athletic games free, in addition to the usual reduced prices for dances. 152 NIZATIDN 153 Top Row: B. Glennon, Treas.; W. Tierney, V. Pres.; E. Towner, 2nd V. At the end of the football season the student body crowned a Homecoming Queen and her court. The 1968-69 Queen was Bonnie Maroney. Beautification of the school was continued. Lockers were repainted, and ad- ditions were made to the stained glass windows through the aid of this or- ganization. A new activity for L.M.H.S., sponsored by the G.O., was the Nearly-Wed Game, which was held in December. Accomplishment must have been the theme of this year's energetic General Organization. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Treas. R. liebling; V. Pres., R. Kirk; Mr. T. Rowan; Miss M. Curtin; Pres., G. Deutsch; Sec. B. Kaufman The L.M.H.S. chapter of the National Hon- or Society energetically started its year by acquiring two new advisors—Miss M. Curtin and Mr. T. Rowan. Led by President Gerry Deutsch, the club installed its new officers and members in late October, and immedi- ately began work on a tutoring system for students who needed extra help. Meeting every 3rd Friday, the members of the club worked on plans for a trip to the University of Albany in March, and the an- nual book fair in the late spring. Girls from the Honor Society checked coats at school dances, and its members wore the tradi- tional gold hoods over their graduation gowns. The Honor Society was proud of its large membership, and the fact that so many of its members held positions of importance in school sports and organizations. 154 Asst. Ed., T. Jacoby; Ed. in chief, B. Schaffer; Sports Ed., B. Strukel. THE INSURGENT The Insurgent was first introduced to Levittown Memorial's student body last year. It was greeted with mixed emo- tions, because it aired controversial topics in an effort to provoke students into thinking. This year, the first issue's theme was Vietnam. Copies of the Insurgent were sold throughout the school, to both stu- dents and faculty members, and again it was greeted with mixed emotions. Advisor to the Insurgent Mr. F. Trezza and Editor-in-Chief Bob Schaffer agreed that the fact that there were these con- flicting opinions expressed about their publication proved that the magazine had indeed attained its goal—it had made people think. RADIO CLUB The music which is played for the en- joyment of students during lunch period study halls is the work of the Radio Club. Advised by Mr. T. Gibney and Mr. T. Claps, the club broadcasted popular music as well as students news and in- terviews. The club sponsored a Folk Concert in January which involved other high school performers, and whose purpose was to raise money for equipment. The Radio Club nol only provides stu- dents with something entertaining to lis- ten to during study halls, it also gives valuable experience to those students in- terested in radio broadcasting as a career. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Students who are interested in the field of teach- ing can often be found in the library after 3:00 —the Future Teachers of America meet there, under the guidance of Mr. R. Ward. They began their year by guiding lost parents on Open School Night. Then a cake sale on Election Day and candy sales through- out the year were sources of revenue for the club. Several representatives of the F.T.A. attended the Annual Convention; a workshop for other F.T.A. clubs was held here at Memorial. Guest speakers were highlighted throughout the season. After con- sidering the year's accomplishments, all agreed it was an enjoyable and profitable year for the Future Teachers of America. Hist., E. McCann; Pari., M. Meunier; V. Pres., A. Lines; Pres. Karnick, the club once again helped keep the library orderly and running smoothly. The members spend their study halls straightening book shelves, proces- sing new books, taking inventory and recording books taken out and returned. The club's By-Lines, consisting of ar- ticles written by the club's members, was again published during the year. 156 Mrs. Karnik; Pres., C. Trotta; V. Pres., I. Bruno; Treas., A. Weinberg FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA The Future Nurses, under the leadership of President Noreen Statler, have had an active year. Many trips to view city hospitals were taken. The meetings of the club were often highlighted by guest speakers from all over the island. The tea, held annually for the purpose of saying fare- well to the club's senior mem- bers, was the ending of this year's activities. Mrs. V. Holmes; Pres., N. Statler; Sec. Treas., R. Aaron; V. Pres., M. Kenny; Mrs. F. Alpert. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Future Homemakers at Levittown Memorial were first organized because interested girls wanted to help improve their community. With the assist- ance of Mrs. M. Biggs, the girls have achieved this goal by being of service to their school and community. They served at Open School Night, at a reception for the teachers, and visited hospitals during the year. All agreed that this year was an exceptional one for the F.H.A. Pres., J. Green; Sec., D. Welsch; Hist., D. Murphy; Mrs. M. Biggs, V. Pres., B. Lacey; Treas., H. Schapiro. 157 SPANISH CLUB V. Pres., A. McAdams; Sec., V. Lichtenstein; Sehor J. Capo; Pres., L. Lewand. This club, led by Lorraine Lewand and under the direction of Sehor Jose Capo, is primarily interested in cultivating the student's interest in Spanish culture. It has worked imag- inatively, preparing exhibits for their hall showcase, greeting each new sea- son and holiday of the year. A fiesta was held in January, celebrating the winter holidays. In addition, the Span- ish club had plans to see the Broad- way play, Man of La Mancha. At the end of the year, the club once again presented a Spanish play, La Suerte de Isabelita, with au- thentic Spanish dialog. This was ded- icated to our retiring principal, Mr. C. Jacobs, and was aided by some of the other language clubs. LATIN CLUB Commencing with the second semester, the Latin Club members, advised by Mr. W. A. Mis, published their first issue of a Latin newspaper, entitled S.P.Q.R. (The Senate and the Roman People.) The Romans annually challenged the other language clubs in games of basketball, baseball, volleyball and field day activities. Prior to the Easter holidays, the members of the Latin Club participated in a field trip to the Metro- politan Museum of Art and to the Hayden Planetar- ium. Towards the end of May, a festive Roman Ban- quet was sponsored in the school cafeteria. By all of these activities, the Latin Club of L.M.H.S. '69 endeavored to promote the study of Latin: Ad Pro- movendum Studium Latinum. Advisor, Mr. W. A. Mis; Pres., J. Degnan; V. Pres. S. Eisman; Treas., R. Moeller. GERMAN CLUB Miss Meyer; Pres., B. Amper; V. Pres., R. Bennett; Sec., K. Murphy. The German Club at L.AA.H.S. had an in- teresting 1968-69 season. The comparatively new organization met twice a month, work- ing to promote further study and activity of the German language. Plans included a trip to the Cloisters and a Germantown restaurant. Under the guidance of Miss Erika Meyer, the club also planned to hold an internation- al buffet in conjunction with the 3 other language clubs at our school. FRENCH CLUB This year was one of doing for the Levit- town Memorial French Club, under the guid- ance of Mr. P. Renna. The Christmas party was held in December and plans were made for participation of the French Club in a play sometime in the spring. Lack of spirit se- verely hampered the activities of the French Club, although much was accomplished and enjoyment was widespread. DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club of L.M.H.S. had a late start this year due to unforeseen difficulties in finding an advisor for the club. Mr. D. Hanna came to the rescue, and he slowly but surely put the Drama Club back on its feet. In February, tryouts were held for the L.M.H.S. production of the comedy My Sister Eileen, which was presented with substantial success towards the end of the school year. The great expectations of the Levittown Memorial sfudent body for an improved Drama Club in future years are well founded. Actor, S. Hirschkowitz; Actor M. Fennimore, Actor, P. Castello; Mr. D. Hanna, Pub. and Act., B. Cook. FENCING CLUB Under the guidance of Mr. R. Clem- mensen, the L.M.H.S. Fencing Club continues to develop the founda- tions for our very fine Fencing Team. Through constant practice and a spe- cial program of calisthenics and ex- ercises, the Fencing Club adeptly lunges, parries and feints whenever it is pitted against a rival. D. Kolberg; Director, S. Aiello; Actor, 160 YORKER CLUB The L.M.H.S. Yorker Club, advised by Mr. D. Hanna and led by President Sheldon Davidson, consists of a group of students who are mem- bers of the New York State Historical Associa- tion. They strive to familiarize themselves with the history of our state. The climax of their busy year was a trip to Syracuse for the annual Yorker Club Convention. Members held raffles, car wash- es, dances and candy sales to raise money for the trip and, by working together, they all had a profitable year. Rec. Sec., A. Geradi; Corr. Sec., R. Moskowitz; 2nd V. The sketches and drawings which line the main hall and the stained glass win- dows located at the end are the handiwork of this club. Ad- vised by Mr. R. Buchanan, the club provides the means by which interested students can express themselves. Because there are no officers, the atmos- phere is relaxed and lends itself to creativity. 161 SKI CLUB Ai 6:00 Saturday mornings, while others are still sleeping, mem- bers of the Ski Club, un- der the leadership of Mike Fennimore and ad- vised by Mr. R. Clem- mensen, were excitedly boarding the bus for Hunter Mountain or Cam- elback. Memorial, Mac- Arthur, and Division held combined trips, al- lowing members to Ski almost every Saturday this winter. All proudly sport the L.M.H.S. Ski Club patch, an innova- tion this year. Movies were also shown at meet- ings. Although only in its second year, at Memo- rial, the Ski Club has grown rapidly, and for all involved it has been a year of learning and fun. SURF CLUB The L.M.H.S. Surf Club met every Monday this year to dis- cuss techniques and problems related to surfing. With its four advisors, Mr. W. Ehlen, Mr. R. Gatland, Mr. T. Gibney, and Mr. B. Baldwin, and its 20 members, the club also swam at Long Beach pool to keep in shape for the coming surfing season. During the Memorial Day weekend, a surfing trip was taken to Mon- tauk Point, ending an interesting year for the Surf Club. Top Row: Mr. W. Ehlen; Mr. T. Gibney. Jacobs welcomed 27 new members into the organization at the beginning of the term. There have been clinics at Garden City, a volleyball-folk dance exchange at Carey High School, and basketball and bowling tour- naments to keep the girls busy. At the end of May, the Leaders Club held its annual picnic at Salisbury Park, featuring softball, archery and tennis matches with 35 other schools thus end- ing an active year. C. Cypin, Sec.; V. Fishbein, V. Pres.; Mrs. R. Jacobs, Advisor; B. Maroney, Pres.; D. Pinto, Treas. FLYING CLUB The Flying Club is new at L.M.H.S. this year. Under Mr. T. Rowan's able direction, the club met once a week to discuss procedures related to the flying of airplanes. The club had plans to consult the Federal Aeronautics Administration about the possibility of gaining a federal charter for renting planes on which to practice. We hope this club has as much success in its 2nd season as it has had in its first. Top to Bottom: K. Coughran, Pres.; M. Otto, Vice Pres.; L. Gorecki, Vice Pres. 163 HEALTH CLUB Treas., C. Gelormino; V. Pres., K. Desimone; Sec., D. Maniscalco; Mr. Wilkins; Corr. Sec., E. Salatti. Members of the Health Club at Levittown Memorial strive to help themselves by helping others. They sought to achieve this aim by collecting money for the Epi- lepsy fund during Christmas va- cation. An amount of $1200 was accredited to them for their ef- fort. Toys were then collected and taken to the children at the Rockland State Mental Hospital. A trip to Washington, D. C. was planned for March, as result of the fine work the members had displayed. Although the Health Club is in its first year it has proved itself to be an active and very worthwhile club. Advisor Mr. Robert Wilkins and President Joe Quinn have certainly done a fine job in establishing this club at Levittown Memorial. INTERNATIONAL FOREIGN RELATIONS CLUB Meeting every 2 weeks, the International Foreign Relations Club at L.M.H.S. worked to in- form interested students of the latest events happening all over the world and the significance of these events. The club's Presi- dent, Ethney Thomas, and the ad- visor, Mr. R. Kelly, with the help of the Club's members, mapped out a constitution for the organi- zation. Plans were also made for the publishing of a magazine about the Peace Corps to be cir- culated through the school. 164 G.O. STORE The G.O. Store, under the management of Mr. Sidney Lerner, helps provide Levittown Memo- rial with many of the necessities of daily class- es. With the aid of students, the store sells ev- erything from pencil sharpeners to sweat shirts, stuffed animals to textbooks. Although these ar- ticles could be bought elsewhere, it's always more convenient to buy them in school. Mr. Lerner and helpers. D.E.C.A. The Distributive Education Club of America's (D.E.C.A.) branch in L.M.H.S. is headed by Mr. Sidney Lerner. Complicated as it sounds, it is primarily concerned with helping to prepare students for careers in business adminis- tration, selling, advertising and retailing. This is achieved by pro- viding the students with films and programs on these careers and at the same time helping the students to realize his or her po- tential in these areas. K. Runge, K. Bookman, Mr. S. Lerner, L. Cullen, P. Castrogiovanni. 165 M ATHLETES Competing November through March against Division, Island Trees and MacArthur, the L.M.H.S. Mathletes have had another successful year. Directed by Mr. W. Lenihan and Mr. D. Brown, the team found itself tied for first place with 9 points halfway through the season. Cap- tains Gerry Deutsch and Gary Anderson were the team's high scorers. The members, all out- standing math students, found it a rewarding and profitable year. HOCKEY CLUB The Levittown Memorial boys Hockey Club is advised by Mr. B. Baldwin and Mr. W. Ehlen. The club, comprised of both students and faculty members, rents ice rinks for practicing, and pits team members against each other to improve their hockey skills. Due to the excellence of this year's team, the members hope to join a league next year so they can compete against other schools. 166 SPECIAL ACTIVITIES The G.O. presents the Nearly Wed Game. The orchestra, under the new direction of Mr. T. O'Donnell, played many classical pieces at the Winter and Spring Concerts, and its precision timing won acclaim from its audiences. Eight members of the orchestra participated in the All-District Orchestra, four went as far as the All-County level, and one, Cathy Bowers, had the honor of playing lead viola in the East Coast Orchestra. The band, once again under Mr. H. K. East's capable direction, also performed at the Winter and Spring Concerts with much success. The marching sections played in the Little League and Memorial Day parades towards the end of the year, and entertained during the half-time shows at home football games. The dance band, also under Mr. East's direction, entertained audiences at the pep rallies by playing songs from the 1940's and 50's. Its blues sound made it a popular edition to the program at any school event in which it participated. These three organizations practiced constantly to achieve the distinct musical effects unique to each. They deserve our thanks for jobs well done. 168 BAND DANCE BAND 169 CHORUS 170 The Girls, Boys and Junior High Choruses made up the vocal section of the music department at Levittown Memorial. The Girls Chorus, under Mrs. E. Norton's direction, entertained audiences at the Mid-Winter and Spring Concerts with their display of combined vocal ability. As the girls carolled in the halls and around the tree during the Christmas season, everyone in the school was urged to join in their holiday'gaiety. The Boys Chorus, headed by Mr. A. Basso, performed both alone and with the Girls Chorus at the two concerts in a fine show of their singing talents. The Boys Chorus is in its sixteenth season this year, each year adding more talent and originality to it ranks. Under the supervision of Mrs. E. Norton, the Junior High Chorus distinguished itself at the Mid-Winter and Spring Concerts, singing many entertaining and beautiful songs. It joined with the two other choruses for a rousing finale at the Winter Concerts. The three choruses worked hard all year to provide L.M.H.S. with enjoyable concerts and everyone who heard them agreed that they performed very well. 171 SPECIAL FIELD TRIP TO NEWSDAY ■5 EVENTS THE AUTOMOTIVE AND INDUSTRIAL SHOPS AFFORD EXTRA OPPORTUNITIES FOR MANY STUDENTS %iS3a . JUNIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS Though football and basketball are largely spectator sports, crowd participation plays a large part in the success of a game and a team. As most people need a little push to become active spectators, the job of a cheer- leader is obvious. It is they who must begin to create an atmosphere of excitement. May- be that is why our teams had such a fantastic season. Without fail, at each game, they had loud, energetic, and truly great cheerleaders backing them up. So let some of the credit the Panthers achieved go to Miss Rudloff and her girls—congratulations!! Left to Right: J. Gerardi, J. Ehrlich, P. Tierney, J. Heald, D. Guerrazzi, J. Eaton, C. Starcke, G. Accompanied by the marching band, the Fresh- man, Junior Varsity and Varsity teams twirled on the football field at half-time during home games. The Varsity squad performed in the gym at home basketball games, keeping time to the music of popular records. As last year, they twirled in the dark, using lighted batons to enhance their rou- tines. Towards the end of the year our Twirlers marched in the Little League and Memorial Day Parade. Everyone agreed it was a most profitable and entertaining year for all. VARSITY FOOTBALL Top Row: P. Wolfe, Coach; N. Balitsos, Coach; T. Beckman; R. Beattie, J. White, K. Bell, L. Fox, G. Climaxing the season with a league co-championship, and an almost perfect 7-1 record, this year's Varsity Football team can easily be called the best in the history of L.M.H.S. After weeks of faithful practice, under the guidance of Mr. N. Balitsos and Mr. P. Wolfe, the players became a strong, ef- fective unit ready for competition. Rarely, if ever, during the season did the morale and spirit of the Panthers lag, as was exemplified by the fast-moving, high-spirited offense which in a single season scored over 200 points. At the head of the list in points scored was Senior Mark Levenshus, scoring 12 touchdowns behind the strong interior lineblocking of Rob Shand, Gary Anderson, Jim Crea- mer, Mickey McAdams and Joe Clemente. No offense, no matter how good, ever gets a chance to work if it's not backed up by an effective defense. Star defensive performances were turned in this year by many graduating squad members. Outstanding was Steve Hastings, defensive captain, who made over 70 tackles. Ed Stevenson, Bill Tierney, Bill Beach and Don Kolberg all helped make the defense. 186 are proud of the suc- of Levittown Memorial's football team and think a special tribute is due to all the members, especially the Seniors, who helped make the 1968 Varsity Football team the great and effective squad it was: G. Anderson, P. Barrett, T. Beckman, R. Boroff, D. Collins, J. Creamer, R. Gabriel, G. Greaves, S. Hastings, R. Henry, E. Kav- iar, R. Kipling, R. Knowles, D. Kolberg, M. Levenshus, P. McCarthy, R. Under the expert coaching of Mr. Ken Granelii, the Varsity Soccer team this year pushed forward to gain the Section III championship. Our excellent rec- ord at the end of the season was 7-3. During the active season, three players aspired to places on the all-county and section teams. Joe Car- bonero made all-section, Mike Lawlor was an all- section fullback, and Donnie Beechler, a great goalie, made the 2nd string all-county team. We hope that next year's team will equal or bet- ter the record of this year's fine squad. 190 t II 192 Our Soccer team this season deserves a special note of thanks for capturing the S.S.A.L. Ill League Championship, with a final record of 7-3. We wish to thank the seniors on the team who, with their drive and spirit, pushed us to the championship: R. Aaron, R. Allen, D. Beechler, R. The Panthers finished off the 1968-69 season with a record of 11-7. After a confident winning streak, the team unfortunately went into a slump. But the players' spirits remained undaunted, and they continued to fight hard. They ended up in 4th place in the final standings. Outstanding players on the team were Captain Rod Greaves, seniors Jim McCormack and Ed Miller, and junior Tom Lacey. Coach L. Desimone provided the strategy for the team with the help of assistant coach J. Cohen. According to Coach Desimone, this year's team was one of the best we've ever had. Consider- ing the loss of some of the best players from last year's team, this year's squad proved to be capable of achieving the highest of goals. We thank the boys for their fine job this season. 194 VARSITY WRESTLING Back Row: E. Kaviar, E. Stevenson, J. Creamer, J. Hannan, L Anderson. 2nd Row: Coach P. Wolfe, W. Tierney, R. Standfast P. Degnan, G. McGrath, J. Lett. Bottom Row: M. Baretto, J. Hannan. The Varsity Wrestling Team coached by Mr. P. Wolfe had a very exciting year. The team gained a great deal of recognition both as a working unit and through the efforts of its individual members. The team began their season undefeated, but lost its 6th game to Bethpage. In the league, the team's record was a disappointing 2-3. In the section tour- nament, Jim Creamer and Gary McGrath placed second. Bill Tierney placed third and Eric Kaviar placed fourth. The season was highlighted when our boys took first place in the Christmas Tournament held at New Hyde Park. This annual event included competition against eight other schools. Outstanding performances were by Gary McGrath, Bill Tierney and Ed Stevenson, all taking first place. Bob Standfast took second place and many other team members took third places. r-. o BASEBALL Try-outs were over, the team was picked, uni- forms were distributed, and the call was Play ball! It was the start of the baseball season once again at Levittown Memorial and we turned out a team that Coach Cohen and the whole school can be proud of. Composed of many veterans and several competent new players, the team progressed into a top contender in South Shore III, the toughest league in the county. This was possible only after long hours of practice and top performances by Gary Anderson and Joe Car- bonero. The success of the team was also due in part to the experience its players gained on the Junior Varsity team. This team gives interested boys a chance to prove their ability, so they may even- tually graduate onto the Varsity Team. 198 LACROSSE One of the hardest sports in which a boy can participate is Lacrosse. A team member must have strength, and an untiring drive to win. The Lacrosse team at LMHS, now in its 5th season, certainly had these attributes in the 1968-69 season. Some outstanding players from last year were back again for an- other try—Mark Levenshus, Pat Barrett, Randy Boroff—as well as many able juniors such as Larry Fox and Ken Bell. Memorial con- gratulates and thanks this team for its great effort during the spring sports season. 199 JV SOCCER The Junior Varsity Football team con- cluded its season by winning all their games, except the one against Wantaugh, which caused them to finish second in their league. They have been described as a fast, hard-hitting team, and there- fore it is felt they will most likely be a running team in the fall of '69. For those who will move up to Varsity next year, J.V. Football has provided them with the skill and confidence need- ed to be a successful Varsity player. Our thanks to all the boys for a great season. The Junior Varsity Soccer squad had a successful season, concluding with a rec- ord of 7-2-1. Headed by Mr. J. McNolty, the team placed a high second in the league. High scorers were Tom Cava- naugh (5) and Tom Schisano (4). The ability and enthusiasm of the team pushed them near to the top-next year we are sure they will excel in their sport once again. 200 JV BASKETBALL The 1968-69 Junior Varsity basketball team, while not proving this year to be their best by ending the year with a record of 8-10, showed strength and confidence even in the face of de- feat. Mr. J. Cohen, the J.V. coach, thinks the team will have more of a chance to show its ability next year. Some of the hopefuls for next year are Bob Day, Steve Allen, John Doyle and Tom Baker. JV WRESTLING The Junior Varsity Wrestling team continued in its importance to the Varsity team this year, for it is the members of this squad who will com- prise next year's Varsity team. Coached by Mr. A. Mark, the team enjoyed a fairly good season. It is unanimously felt that the J.V. Wrestling team shows great promise and it is hoped that the experience the members have gained this year will provide L.M.H S. with an even better Varsity team next year. 201 CROSS COUNTRY Top Row.- G. Cassidy, E. Miller, B. Baldwin. 2nd Row: B. Lipsky, W. Keatley, J. Poland. Bottom Row: D. Folger, R. Flynn, K. Mehm. Levittown Memorial's Cross Country team proved its ability again this year. Coached by Mr. T. Isoldi, the team finished 7-1 in their league and second in their division. Outstanding among the runners was Senior Ed Miller. Miller, after building up a successful record last vear, returned this year to set a new school record of 12:56 for the 21 2 mile course. Other runners were Captain Ken Mehm, George Cassidy, Barry Lipsky and Randy Flynn. Jeff Poland and Brad Baldwin proved themselves to be good additions to the team. Team effort summed up the '69 Cross Country season. And because of the talent and spirit of the new runners, next year's team is expected to be even better. TRACK Under the direction of Mr. J. Kelly, the Track Team ran and jumped its way through another active season. It always worked as a team, but each individual always tried hard to end his season with a new record or an exceptional win. Whether or not they succeeded in their personal goals is of little importance when you realize they were members of a spirited and persevering team. L.M.H.S. is proud of the Track Team because, even though it is not given as much recognition as other sports, it continues to be a valuable addition to the list of teams at Levittown Memorial. Congratulations to the boys for a great season. INDOOR TRACK 204 Indoor track emerged as a new Varsity team at Levittown Memorial last year. It quickly became a very popular sport, with many boys from all grades starting training and running hard to establish the team as a success. Many of last year's outstanding players returned this year to boost the team. Tom Beckman, Nick Videtto and Ed Burgess, along with the many new mem- bers of the team, proved that even in the face of a disappointing season Memorial can be proud of what it has accomplished. The club was undefeated in its first season here at L.M.H.S., a truly remarkable feat for a new team, and one that no other Varsity team can claim. We know that, with the help of the members of the club who will be on the team next year, the Indoor Track team can equal the record of this year's fine team. This year's tennis team de- serves much credit for all the effort put in by its players this season. The team's mo- rale remained high and their spirit was undaunted in the face of an adverse season. Co-captains Ted Jacoby and Joel Pest, although disap- pointed by their losses, re- mained certain of a much better spring season and ex- pressed hope in the skills of players Ethney Thomas and Arnie Rose. Mr. Jordan, team coach, is also sure of a vic- torious team next year. 7th GRADE FOOTBALL This year, the seventh grade football team, coached by Mr. D. Hanna, was composed of an out- standing group of boys who played 8-man football. These boys, in intra-district league com- petition, mastered a complex sys- tem of plays which assured them of their final great combined score of 109-18. Outstanding team players were N. Johnston, S. Sillence, T. Zacker, and M. Liantonio, who, we hope, will go on to make our Varsity and J.V. football teams even greater in the years to come. Congratula- tions to all the boys and their coach for a job well done. 206 BOWLING Top Row: G. Anderson, J. Hernandez, Coach J. Jordan. Bottom Row: F. Kramer, 3. Picano, J. Prehm. This year's Bowling team showed fine form and sportsmanship. Led by Captain Sal Picano, they fought their way through one of Nassau County's toughest leagues. Finishing with an overall record of 8-6, they placed ninth out of 38 schools participating in the county playoffs. They also won the Golden Bowling Ball Trophy, a coveted district award. Outstanding players were Sal Picano, with an average of 182, Gary Anderson with a 179, Jack Prehm with a 178, and Fred Kramer with a 174. Coach J. Jordan has extremely high hopes for next year's team, as well as much praise and thanks for this year's. 207 FENCING TEAM P. Castello, D. Kolberg, Captain; S. Daniels, J. Panzeca, S. Aiello, R. Phillips, Mr. W. Ehlen, S. Neuman. This year the Levittown Memorial Fencing Team has enjoyed a great success. Under the leadership of Coach R. Clemmensen and captain Donne Kolberg, the team won 2 out of 3 matches against Wheatley, 3 out of 3 against Oyster Bay and 1 out of 1 against Eastern Military. As a result of these victories, our team has been declared the unofficial Nassau County Champion. The success of the team has been attributed not only to the expert fencing of players Phil Castello, Ted Jacoby and Donne Kolberg, but to the hard work and effort put in by the entire club. In addition, Mike Matranga qualified high enough to fence in competition in Europe during the Easter vacation. Mr. Clemmensen feels that this year's team was the most experienced fencing team ever to be at Memorial. It is expected that several members will go on to collegiate and Amateur fencing. FIELD HOCKEY HONOR AND RESERVE Top Row: B. Maroney, C. Cypin, N. Beyer, E. Kenny, L. Claster, D. Boroff, J. Sandak, E. Josephs, D. Breitburg, L. Klinkowitz, A. Conway, E. Fowler, D. Torre. Bottom Row: D. Dowd, L. Severino, C. Sessa, P. Lucas, S. Kraus, B. Amatucci, A. Telesca, P. Reid. The L.M.H.S. girl's Field Hockey team, coached by Mrs. R. Jacobs, was a successful one, ending its season with a 4-2 record. Unlike the girl's basketball team, the Honor and Reserve team system is still in effect. The team's high scorers this year were Eileen Kelly (5) and Bonnie Marony (3). The many talented juniors and sophomores on the team, such as Diane Torre, Daryl Bo- roff and Lisa Claster, give promise to a great team next year as well. ait 'v? ’ 209 HONOR VOLLEYBALL Though our Honor Team didn't fare so well in competition this year (1-5 record) they demon- strated a great knowledge of the game, and true team spirit. To win a volleyball game, a team must win two out of three match- es and our Honor Team always fought to the end of the three matches. They certainly worked hard and the season was an es- pecially beneficial for all the girls. Top Row: M. Boyle, M. Kenny, L. Doyle, L. Claster, D. Boroff. Bottom Row: D. Pinto, E. Kelly, P. Lucas. RESERVE VOLLEYBALL Top Row: S. Kraus, A. Telesca, S. Waring, D. Torre, A. Conway. Bottom Row: K. Antonucci, K. Lucas, L. Severino. It was not unusual for the L.M.H.S. Reserve Volleyball Team to win after their first two match- es. They were always eminently sure of their victory. Their spec- tacular playing served as an in- spiration for the other teams. 210 11th GRADE VOLLEYBALL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Top Row: D. Torre, E. Fowler, B. Glennon, P. Lucas, D. Boroff, B Waterbury, L. Claster, S. Korowitz, N. Beyer, C. Cypin, S. Deacon. Bottom Row.- N. Ward, L. Doyle, L. Severino, E. Kelly, S. Waring. According to Mrs. Jacobs, this year's basketball team was one of the most hard-working squads L.M.H.S. has ever had. Despite several early injuries to some of the team's most promising players, the team holds a record of 4-1. High scorers for the season were Eileen Kelly, Peggy Lucas and Sue Waring. There is no distinction this year between Honor and Reserve teams, all players being equally proficient in the game. They were placed in position according to how well they played. In this way, the girls' skills could be concentrated where they were most needed. This new system proved how very good a team we had this year. 213 214 BANKS BEVEPACES The Factory Discotheque Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Ducey Aerial Way, Syosset Fidem Scit—M. O. C. Mr. and Mrs. W. R.
